About This Game

War of the Roses is a team based third person action game set in 15th century England. Two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet - the house of Lancaster (the reds) and the house of York (the whites) – fight over the throne, and the player is thrown into the fray.

The years of 1455-1485 in England are an extraordinary setting filled with conflict, treachery and bloodshed. In the wake of the “death of chivalry” at Agincourt in 1415 and the introduction of gunpowder, warfare changed - the gloves came off, so to speak. The old and the new clashed on the battlefield while personal vendettas motivated the desire for war.

War of The Roses sees players go toe-to-toe with their opponents using authentic and visceral weapons of the time period including broad swords, long bows and battle-axes.

Key Features:

  • Four Ways To Play – Play as a Footman, Gaurdsman, Longbowman, or Footknight allowing you to explore the various combat options that fight your expertise best.
  • Mass Devastation - Up to 64 player competition in both Team Death Match and Conquest modes. Battle online through 11 historically inspired war zones as you experience the conflict between Lancaster & York first hand.
  • Rank Up and Earn Coins Through Battle – gain experience and coins as you battle your way through your prowess on the fields of battle.

This game used to be incredible. The weapons and armor system was very complex, from customizing the type of edge on your sword to needing to aim for weak spots in armor.

Now it's a cesspool of Pay To Win, unbalanced weapons, and Hackers. Now I would never recommend this game to anyone.

After 135 hours of gameplay I can easily say that I don't recommend to even consider buying this "work of art". This... this pure cancer is an abandoned game by the developers contains one of the most toxic, not noob friendly communities I've ever played with. Full of exploiters and hackers doing 360 degrees instant kill swirls with pitchforks and wooden clubs. Most players can instakill a new player not even looking at him/her with an overhead swing. There is no skill left anymore, just hacks.

It used to be a good game during its inception, great concept, satisfying graphics and peasants running with pitchforks just pwning full plated knights was a funny sightseeing.

Just don't bother, stay away as far as possible from this garbage and spend your money on something much better.

Support for the game has officially ended, but the core game is still solid. It has one of the better combat systems out there in its genre. The community is fairly thin and there are a lot of complaints about the existing servers, which leads to a sense of elitism shutting out newer players. It has directional and volumetric striking, parrying and blocking which is confusing as hell at first, but over time is easy to understand but difficult to master. There are some cheap tricks that you could like constant shield bashing, but a well managed community server run on the premise of making the game fun can help override stuff like that. It's similar to just about every other game out there on the market; if you are part of a well run community, you are more likely to have a better experience and this game is no different.

Rather than shrug and give up, I did start a new server for our community to see if we can breathe some life into the game, so we'll see how that works out. In a group that you can trust not to exploit, the game does very well, but be warned that the current public servers are very rough.

Here is a video announcement a group of us did for some tournaments we hosted in the game several years ago:

War of the Roses has a unique type of gameplay where unlike most games where you press "X" to "attack", the attacks you perform in War of the Roses is completely dependant on you. You don't just choose how hard you swing your sword but you can choose the direction you do so as well (downswing, uppercut, left/ and right/ <--see what I did there? and thrust). The game also has lots of sound effects, The lighting is really good but may be tough on weak computers.

War of the Roses also has an advanced shooting system but I won't give away any features
(the game has guns, lots of guns ).

Try the free version that gives you really good starting classes. The free version alows you to still play multiplayer while the bought version lets you buy custom classes (with in game credits) and have a campaign.

I've played over 1000 hours of this game. I've seen it from it's conception to it's end.
The community of this game is unlike any other I've ever encountered in an online group. They are vindictive, rude and destructive to the game. Throughout the entire time I played I suffered no end of trolling, mocking and the like. There were people that literally exploited the kicking function to get me off of servers so I could not play the game I paid for.
The issue also lies with the developers whom constantly ignored community begging to get hackers out. Even to this day, after an anti-cheat patch, the game is STILL cracked, people running around with weapons they shouldn't, running fast, swinging faster than is possible. Some people even exploit the bad latency issues to win.

There's a top 1% in this game, they are not skilled players by any stretch. Instead of skill they got together and figured out what the best ways to exploit the games mechanics. From unblockable hits to builds that were simply insanely unfair, they scared away any new players to the game by trying their best to ruin the fun for others. To this day, even now, I get on and someone is taking my Steam ID name so they can spam vote kicks so I can't play.

Stay far, far away from this game. Think of World of Warcraft only cultivated with the worst of the worst (community) possible. The truth is I enjoyed this game but the playerbase was hellbent on seeing it go under. You have honest, fun people who are endlessly frustrated by the trolls, hackers and exploiters.

There is no welcome mat here, just a gigantic letdown.

im still ♥♥♥♥♥♥ this game is free now. i want some of my money back. the acceleration system makes about as much sence as putting wheels on your feet, most weapons are kinda useless in most situations, unless your using them for stabbing purposes. archers and stuff feel like there robots who just shrug off pain and continue shooting with the worlds stedies hands.

Product received for free
Though i only an hour in this game there is a good reason for it.

Pros
Nice graphics
Good combat system

Cons
half the people you will meet are hackers
The game is as good as dead
you have to pay for the game for more than 90% of the content(dont know why its called free to play as a standalone game yet pay for the entire game as if it was a demo)

Dont waste your money, buy Mound&Blade Warband, a much better game with much better combat. Also Warband is more alive than this game, if u buy it you will be forced to play duels with bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ running around on some kind of speed hack, with shield and dagger, bugging animations. This game was never good, im glad its dead.

Quite an intresting experience. Unfortunately, currently it's kinda abandoned, but nonetheless this game has great medieval-style combats. Nice mechanics (except for a bit primitive and clunky mounted combat). It's like a more advanced multiplayer-only version of Mount & Blade.
