About This Game

War of the Roses is a team based third person action game set in 15th century England. Two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet - the house of Lancaster (the reds) and the house of York (the whites) – fight over the throne, and the player is thrown into the fray.

The years of 1455-1485 in England are an extraordinary setting filled with conflict, treachery and bloodshed. In the wake of the “death of chivalry” at Agincourt in 1415 and the introduction of gunpowder, warfare changed - the gloves came off, so to speak. The old and the new clashed on the battlefield while personal vendettas motivated the desire for war.

War of The Roses sees players go toe-to-toe with their opponents using authentic and visceral weapons of the time period including broad swords, long bows and battle-axes.

Key Features:

  • Four Ways To Play – Play as a Footman, Gaurdsman, Longbowman, or Footknight allowing you to explore the various combat options that fight your expertise best.
  • Mass Devastation - Up to 64 player competition in both Team Death Match and Conquest modes. Battle online through 11 historically inspired war zones as you experience the conflict between Lancaster & York first hand.
  • Rank Up and Earn Coins Through Battle – gain experience and coins as you battle your way through your prowess on the fields of battle.

Great game until they made it free. That's when the pay 2 win started.

Before, you had to earn Gold. Now you can just spend 50 bucks on gold, gear up, get a pollaxe (hasn't been patched, still OP as ♥♥♥♥) and spam right swing. Make sure to spam at neck/head level. That way you just get instant kills. Lots of fun!

War of the Roses is an interesting game that sadly has many flaws.

While it seems to go to great lengths to get historical accuracy right on the weaponry, the combat itself is often laggy and only a few days ago there was exactly one server I could find that wasn't a duel server. In addition, you have to spend coins(Which you can of course buy with actual money) to unlock your items if you want to play a custom build. But at least you get free coins for playing. It's not a lot, but it's enough that you will have a decent progression to your goal if you have a single set goal(Such as a crossbowman). I don't recommend buying coins, at this stage it feels like throwing money down a well

Luckily, to play the game itself is free, and that is exactly what I recommend. The combat feels like it's similar to Mount and Blade but a bit more polished for multiplayer, but sadly there are some builds which seem to almost always work better than others. An example of such a build is to take the lightest armour and add a large axe. While this would in theory make the user very squishy and easy to kill, in practice there is enough lag that they are difficult to hit and often you will find your attacks pass right through them, but they still hit incredibly hard with that axe.
When you can find a server that's right next to your home, however, this one build almost completely disappears as they get wrecked with a single hit nearly every time you swing at them. Of course, there are more 'optimal' builds than just those, so you'll still have trouble and may feel like you're going up against copy pasted enemies at times.

In the end, there is a lot of good, and a lot of bad, but it feels from what I've seen like the devs, publishers, or both have given up on this game so it won't be getting much more good out of it. I'm still recommending it because it's a free alternative to games like Mount and Blade and Chivalry. It's nice, but that's all it is. Not really good but not really bad either, and I would say it's worth taking a look.

At its peak, this was one of my favorite games of all time, the combat mechanics were deep and had a steep learning curve, the armor system was very complex and logical, and above all this game rewarded the skill of the players.

Of the 140 hours I've played, roughly 100 of them were spent on dueling servers fighting 1on1 with other players, all of whom were there because they enjoyed the actual competition or to master their skills with a new weapon. The dueling community was strong and friendly, always willing to help teach new players how to survive the game.

But then the Devs changed things, the armor system simplified, the weapons became more powerful, crossbows became sniper rifles, hitboxes and crit chances grew, and the art of dueling was lost to the ether; replaced by polearm decapitations, across the map crossbow headshots, and stab spamming. All that is left now is the empty rotting shell of a once great game.

For $5, I can't say it isn't good. Though much like shooters, it has been out for a long time and is very much filled to the brim with 1337 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s who will take the ♥♥♥♥ out of anyone who isn't a total badass. Generally, in any given match one team will suck and the other will have one or a few of said badasses on their team which pretty much invalidates your participation because at best, you'll be getting your head chopped off every 30 seconds.

Aside from those nerd rage inducing situations, generally its a very good game with plenty of customization to be had. If anything, I'd advise you to put $5 into getting some coin to start with, unless you're a glutton for punishment. But then again I'd advise you to not buy this at all, simply because pretty much every server will have a few of those 1337 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ running around; entirely destroying the experience the vast majority of the time.

Never mind the lag and glitches/bugs in general, with that terrible learning curve only increasing by multitudes as time passes only making it worse... as far as I'm concerned its terminal date has come. No one with any sense about them should submit themself to the hails of crossbow bolts and nimble peasants running around with giant axes. If anything play the free "trial" version and get slaughtered until you uninstall in frustration, then fap furiously until you can get on with your life.

I played the alpha and the beta and the current free to play version of the game, and honestly not much has changed. It was very clear early on in playing the alpha that certain things about the game were never going to be fixed. Its such a shame as well, because this is such a fun game to play. I cannot recommend this game because of the lack of effort put into the updates by the devs. What a waste.

Even though I thought this game was going to be a great hit when it first came out as the game was updated I thought it only went downhill and they made too many changed to the game which in the end made me loosing interest in the game.

I remember when it first came out and I played my first couple of matches and it was absolutely amazing, even though there wasn't that much equipment at the time, I thought the game was at it's peak cause the weapons were strong but fair cause everyone could access them reletivly fast.

As soon as they started updating the game I started to think that it was just going downhill, cause they made some of the weapons basicly unuseable then they started to add stuff like guns which completely ruined the vibe for me also cause they were mainly nerfing alot of the weapons and didn't seem to focus on improving it in other areas the game started to seem a lot less fun where before you could run in with a two handed sword and have some really fun and intense duals where they were now to slow to effectivly use I noticed that the two handed swords became pretty useless and the only weapons seemed worth using where the polearms because they had a decent swing speed and they were completely overpowered but they never seemed to want to nerf them.

Overall I think the game was brilliant at it's launch but it went downhill, and as it is a multiplayer game and their dosn't seem to be that many people playing it anymore, probably for the same reasons that I stopped playing it, I wouldn't recommend getting it as you would probably come to a quick realisation that you just have wasted your money...

this game used to be fun. it used to be allmost a simulation with armour being taken into account, realistic damage models and historically acurate everything. its not anymore. patch after patch update after update and your left with a husk of what it used to be. an example of this is the wooden rake. the wooden rake is ,as it sounds, a rake made from wood and string, however an over head attack from it will ,no matter what armour you wear or what sield you use, insta-kill you. this has been a bug for a good year now and has never been fixed. instead they constantly add new contenet no one asked for just to un even the playing field even more. my point is simple: if you want sword on sword combat at its best, play chivalry.

A F2P game that forces you into MP with no idea what to do, leaving you to the wolves while expecting you to not only figure things out on the fly in a competitive MP environment but also expects to entice you to spend money on crap for the game. Basic training on a game like this, with wonky and half-♥♥♥♥♥ mechanics, should at the very least not be locked behind a paywall. I managed to figure out how to do basic crap like change weapons and attack after a few minutes of finangling around in the starting spawn, only to be met with a timely demise as one would expect as soon as I even saw any action. Maybe if I had any idea what I was doing, what my goal was, or what to remotely expect.

Now granted a lot of this would of been resolved after maybe an hour of play. The thing is, is that the game gives zero reason as to why you should invest more than ten minutes with it's ancient and barebones... everything. I get free to play, but god damn. And you hiding tutorials behind paywalls. Really? The game looks worse than a low budget GameCube game made early on in it's lifecycle, and that was with settings on "High". The combat is some weird combination of left clicking and dragging your mouse in the direction you want to attack or block. I get the strive for some realistic/more tactical combat, but it's so sloppy to pull off and your camera is going all over the place because you have to move the mouse to attack. Not like it matter because most people are going to either just shoot you in the face with an arrow or try to get a drop on you and attack from behind so they don't have to deal with awful combat.

This game is about trying to predict how you and your enemies move, considering the latency.

WARNING: This game is incredibly laggy and to me, and there isn't much of a community on it anymore.

Now, to start things off, I have played it at a friend's house before I got it myself, about four months ago. I was skeptical at first to get it, as his computer was only getting a max of about 7 FPS, even on the lowest settings. Knowing this, and knowing my PC is worse than his, I was quite hesitant. When I got it a couple days ago, I had literally crashed my PC when the MENU opened. After quite a bit of messing with the options before loading up the game, it had managed to open, but took about 5 minutes to just load the menu. After it did, it was running at a max of 4 FPS. I seriously wanted to play with my friend as well, and have my own game progress. However, this isn't the case as it wasn't able to find a single server to play on, rendering the game useless as it is a multiplayer only game.

About the community: Before the anti-cheat patch, the game and servers were filled with cheaters and people who wouldn't play fair. After the patch (which is when I got the game) it had considerably less people, and though the cheaters were mostly gone, it was quite slow pased as less players were around to play against, and this was frustating too. Though it can somewhat be enjoyable to an extent, and have some good gameplay if you join a server that has 20+ people in it, though it is very rare to find one, I wouldn't recommend getting it now.

Before the anti-cheat patch: 5/10

After ther anti-cheat patch: 3/10

Overall: 4/10

Boring, slow gameplay. Not much fun to play. I tried to play the bot mode and I was constantly annoyed with the archers. They are so annoying, I quit the game. Slow gameplay, ♥♥♥♥ty game.

The game was great and now with the anti-cheat it's even better.

If you want realistic combat, armour and scenery - this is the game for you.
The mechanics are amazing and the hitboxes are ridiculously precise.
This is the BEST medieval multiplayer deathmatch game.

Also, sallets.

[NOT CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.]
The fighting is just awful in my opinion.. It feels like I never land any attacks, and the enemy always hits me. I guess people would start saying, "Just learn the hitboxes." Well i've tried, and it's just not good in my opinion.

Personal rating: 3/5
Replayability: N/A
Budget: Buy on sale - But I'd personally not spend money on it. It's a pay-to-win game, that you even have to pay for.
Lenght: Infinate.

I have a tendency to become very enthusiastic about current projects, especially if they involve subjects that interest me. Being interested in medieval history and warfare, this game seemed right up my alley, but first of all it's 100% multiplayer, many servers are kinda hostile, the game seems like the combat system from Mount and Blade was basically just given new graphics and put in a separate package, and of course it's also the reason I discovered there even was a "steam wallet" function.

I quickly understood just how pointless this game was.

To say a few nice things about it, it does have some... Partially good mechanics in some areas, heavily outweighed by poor animations and generally bad physics in the game.

I'm bored just thinking about this game.
