Now that I realize this is end of the franchise, I have to say it has a very disapointing end. I won't spoil it but it ruins the experience of narrative that comes before it. The story of Gordon Freeman has the most absurd, closure in gaming history.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is the direct sequel to Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and is the last Half Life game released. So I was expecting something at least semi-interesting since people have been begging for its sequel for almost 10 years now. And while I didn't come away from the ending with my jaw on the floor, agonizing over when I would be able to play its sequel, I did find it to be an enjoyable experience.

That's not to say it advances the gameplay of the Half Life series in any revolutionary way. But it does take the series' established characters and gameplay into new and interesting territory. You'll still be using the same weapons, fighting most of the same enemies, and moving around in a familiar manner, but there are some interesting new settings to advance through and some slight twists to gameplay which distinguish it enough from the rest of the games in the series, thus offering more of the satisfying gameplay the Half-Life games have been known for.

The story itself is a bit more emotionally tinged this time around. Throughout the journey you'll be to more exposed to the personal thoughts and feelings of the characters than in previous titles. And rest assured the terrffic voice work from past games is still around, and in full form, making these moments worthy of empathy, and instrumental in bringing more life to characters.

Graphically there isn't much to write home about as this is a nine year old game, and it is beginning to show its age. But the Half-Life series' famous art design continues to intruige the eyes and mind so unless you're generaly abhorred by older graphics, they shouldn't dampen your enjoyment of the game. All in all, Episode 2 successfully continues to carry the torch of its predecessors and takes the Half-Life series into some interesting, albeit minimal, fresh terrain.

HL1 = 11-8-1998
HL2 = 11-16-2004

Ep. 1 = 2006
Ep. 2 = 2007

6 years from HL1 to HL2, 2 years from HL2 to Ep. 1, 1 year from Ep. 1 to Ep. 2.

6+2+1= 9 years

2007 + 9 years = 2016.

HL1 and HL2 ( the base games due to the fact ep 1 and 2 were based off HL2 ) were both released in November and both were released on multiples of 8, 8 and 16, which means the next will be in November on a multiple of 8 (8,16,24) so the 24, in 2016.

Half Life 3 will be released on November 24, 2016...

Rebel: So have you ever used an AR2 before?
Refugee: AR2? Nooo... Now, an AR3, sure. plenty of times.
Rebel: There is no such thing as an AR3.

...

Moral: GabeN can't even make an assault rifle with '#3' tag on it, let alone release HL3 and other '#3' related games. I understand now the #3 must be a source of evil. <3 gabeN's sequential logic!

Half-Life 2: Episode Two continues the human resistances fight against the Combine, with you once again playing the role of Gordon Freeman. It takes place immediately following the occurrences of Episode One, and contains somewhere between 4-5 hours of quality content depending on how you play it.

Episode Two does a great job progressing the title through every aspect when compared to Episode One, just like Episode One did in comparison to the base game. With Episode Two you will find slightly updated visuals by the way of textures and lighting, various new mechanics, and a couple of new enemies and weapon types. However, the narrative is easily what develops the most, which is at the same time the most frustrating part of this installment. Great strides were made into understanding the plot, you become more invested than ever, and then BOOM! Everything is stopped in its tracks, a huge cliff hanger occurs, and nearly a decade later there is no extension to the series. I took all the self-control I had to get this far still writing a genuinely informative review, so I'm just going to let it all out now.

Personal Rating: ♥♥♥♥ YOU VALVE (10)/10

The Combine gather, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall find no medkits, hold no ammo, father no children. I shall wear no helmets and win no glory. I shall live and die with the vortigaunts. I am the crowbar in the darkness. I am the researcher in the labs. I am the missile that burns against the Combine, the light that brings the end of their days, the siren that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Lambda Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

I think I'm gaining a little too much weight. I stood on my scale and it said "9 years". I don't know what that even means, but I'm hoping that no matter how much weight I gain it will be worth it in the end.

Update: My scale just broke

And again, not much to say. Episode Two continues where Episode One left off, and is so far the last game in the Half-Life series. Once again you have Alyx as a partner, though you'll spend a part of the game by yourself because of story reasons. There's also a lot more driving around this time. It's about as long as Episode One so if you liked Half-Life 2 and Episode One, you'll probably like this. Though be warned, once you finish this game, you WILL be frustrated with the fact that Valve still hasn't come out with Episode Three or Half-Life 3 yet.
