What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“It is, in our experience, an amazing way for players to experience the game early on and provide awesome feedback on every aspect of it. Such communication is invaluable to us, to our small team of enthusiasts and will ultimately result in a much better and fulfilling game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The minimum we plan to stay in Early Access is 6 months, but this will likely increase to 12 months of EA development, which is another thing to keep in mind when considering making a purchase. If you’re not sure, there’s no need to rush into buying the game; we’re not going anywhere ;).”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The initial version released in Early Access can be seen as a rough sketch of the final game. Not all features are implemented yet nor is the game world finished. Over the course of Early Access, we’ll release smaller and larger updates. We’ll post an overview of each update and a production timeline so you know what to expect in advance. Any changes to these plans will also be announced.

For starters, travelling the vast Gemini star system is not hindered in any way. You’re not locked into a region or two, but the state of each region in the game world will vary as we’ll focus on specific portions of the world and update them over time.

The storyline is NOT implemented. Please keep this in mind. If you’re looking to delve deep into the main campaign from the get-go, this game in Early Access is probably NOT for you. The initial several “tutorial” quests are in, but this is only the few starting quests. The rest of the campaign quests is NOT planned to be unlocked during Early Access. If we go for any change in this subject, we’ll make sure to announce it. The campaign is large and features a large number of interconnected quests. It will be under development for the entire duration of EA and tested during this time as well, but it will not be released as the constant development and refinement of it could mess up save files each and every time. Unlocking the full main campaign is by far the largest difference that will occur when shifting from EA into full release. All other features, including the conquest mode, will be added and tweaked through regular updates.

Another thing worth mentioning is game performance. Although we’re using an upgraded version of our own engine featured in Starpoint Gemini 2, adding features and improved models can still have a negative effect on framerate. This should be expected during Early Access. Final optimization, as the name implies, comes in later stages, but please read the listed preliminary system requirements before deciding on a purchase.

Modding is perfectly allowed during Early Access, but the official implementation of the Steam Workshop is TBD (in Early Access). We love mods, but opening it up early on can cause a world of problems to the development of the game and also of the mods too. Mod functionality is greatly improved in Warlords (in comparison to SG2), but we’d like to play it a bit safer this time.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is playable, but not all features are implemented. The basis is a free-roam experience, doing randomly generated Freelance missions, mining asteroids, salvaging stuff from derelicts you come across, scanning anomalies, fighting other ships and fleets… On top of that, you also have your headquarters, your base of operations, which you can upgrade by constructing additional various station modules. These modules in turn unlock additional activities and possibilities. And to round things up, you can start your massive war campaign to conquer the entire Gemini sector.

All of the things noted above are also “work in progress” and will be further expanded on and improved.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The initial price will be lower and gradually, as the game increases in content and features over the course of Early Access, the price will increase too. We’ll do our best to announce any price increase in advance.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“This is our second entry in Early Access. We’ve successfully entered, developed through and exited EA with Starpoint Gemini 2, the predecessor to Warlords. If you’re interested in a lot of reading, head to the SG2 Steam discussion board to see how it worked the first time. We’ll sum it up here in a few sentences.

Community involvement is essential. The amount of feedback, ideas, comments and suggestions can be overwhelming, but ultimately it will make the game better once the final version ships. We do have our own schedule to follow and fulfill, but we also do our best to incorporate community suggestions. We’re looking forward to repeat this intense and fun communication. Some features are easier to implement than others, but that’s no reason to ignore requests made by the community. When we’re certain we cannot implement a feature, you can be sure we’ll say it frankly. Everything else goes directly to the “Wish list”. This time, we hope to have this list displayed publically so everyone can have a look at any time.

Starpoint Gemini Warlords is in a way a direct result of community suggestions during Early Access of Starpoint Gemini 2. The largest desired features, the ones we loved, but simply couldn’t properly implement into SG2 due to their scope or complexity are coming to full life in Warlords. This game really is made “by gamers for gamers” and we hope you’ll be a part of it.

Safe travels, captains!”

About This Game

IMPORTANT: This game is EARLY ACCESS ALPHA. Please do not PURCHASE it unless you want to actively SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT of the game and are prepared to handle with SERIOUS ISSUES and POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS of gameplay.

Starpoint Gemini Warlords is a unique blend of space sim, RPG and 4X games focused on larger ships, ranging from gunships to carriers. Command your starship, send your war fleets into enemy territory, lead your heroic companions into battle, build up your stronghold, trade, mine, salvage and remind your enemies why they fear you.

STORY

https://sketchfab.com/models/8868a98c244b42c4aaa5213f4c0b871c
Humans, fleeing from the ruined Solar system trickled into Gemini in rag-tag convoys, their ships barely holding together. Planet Phaeneros, located in the farthest reaches of the Gemini system, abandoned long before Gemini gained its independence, will become their new home... your new home. You should prepare for what's coming, captain. The Solari Concord needs you!

TWO MODES OF PLAY

The campaign mode continues the story from Starpoint Gemini 2 after the Gemini Protectorate and its allies managed to fend off the Brotherhood threat. The Empire, both in their mainspace and in Gemini have been wiped out. Only small pockets of resistance remain. Progress through the storyline at your own pace and make difficult choices along the way, changing how the storyline will ultimately play out.

The conquest mode is for the freeroamers. Strip away the campaign, but leave everything else and you have yourself the conquest mode. Create a story of your own and completely change the face of Gemini!

COMMUNITY DRIVEN

Warlords is a spin-off to our successful space sim Starpoint Gemini 2. The majority of the planned features and implemented ideas came directly from the SG2 community. All the things asked about and requested that we simply couldn’t implement in SG2, are now integrated into Warlords. And these are not minor features. We’re redoing entire sections of both gameplay and the underlying game engine.

KEY FEATURES

  • Headquarters. Construct and upgrade your own personal space station; a massive structure that enables you to conduct research, build ships, assemble autonomous fleets and much more.
  • Conquer Territory. Gradually expand your reign over unclaimed territory, by battling minor factions, or conquer the entire Gemini sector, by facing off against familiar strong Gemini foes, familiar from the previous Starpoint Gemini titles. Reinforce conquered regions to defend themselves.
  • Conduct Research on simple weapon enhancements, obtain the expertise to construct a titan class behemoth, or boost the effectiveness of your non-combat fleets. Equipment, ship systems, enhancements and ships can still be bought, but he best ‘stuff’ can only be researched, constructed and improved in your HQ.
  • Construction and research demand the allocation of resources. Gather them by conducting missions for other factions, trade or purchase resources, or conquer regions providing a steady flow of resources, and bonuses.
  • A far larger game world will allow more distinction between ship sizes, pockets of empty space to travel through and your own giant space HQ where ships can be ‘parked’.
  • Skill classes, attributed skills and perk progression will be revamped and rebalanced, as will levelling-up, the reputation system and diplomacy.
  • Storyline vs Free-roam: The campaign storyline will be blended in with the more generic conquer quests. Free-roam mode strips all main storyline missions, but leaves side quests and generic freelance missions intact.
  • A full branching dialogue scheme, the industry standard in modern RPGs.
  • Technical additions include: x64 system only, projection mapping, deferred shading, physically based rendering and realistic physics.

Features available in the Early Access version include:

  • The full game world which is almost 10 times larger than the game world in Starpoint Gemini 2.
  • Start with a prologue of the story-line and continue in Conquest mode.
  • Headquarters features about 50% complete.
  • 13 of 19 planned freelance mission types are in. Roughly half the modifiers too.
  • 50% of planned ships are in (approx. 40).
  • 60% of random encounter types are present. Roughly half the modifiers too.
  • 1 of 4 character classes.
  • Most of the ship’s equipment and weapons.
There is a massive feature list available on the forums that will be implemented during Early Access.

For more information, check out the official Starpoint Gemini Wiki on Gamepedia.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows 7 or higher (64 bit)
    • Processor: Intel Core 3.0 GHz or equivalent
    • Memory: 8 GB RAM

I hate to make overused bad puns, but "this game boldly goes where few games have gone before". At least to my knowledge. You would usually either have a full on RPG space simulator (of various degrees of immersion) or an RTS version of the space genre. Granted, I do admit that this is the first game from the series that I tried, so perhaps this is not new to Starpoint Gemini itself, but on the plus side, this means I went in without any prior expectation one way or another.

So what's it like? You want to think "freelancer" gameplay for the player as the pilot, where your ship is actual spaceship size that needs more than a single pilot to fly (meaning you do have the option of having your crew fire multiple lasers at multiple enemies at the same time), while putting the player in charge of not just the ship itself, but an entire system in hostile territory as one would expect an RTS title to do, whereby the player needs to gather resources to build up that system with structures, upgrade the base unlocking further improvements in the base's "tech tree" so to speak, all the while working towards upgrading their own ship while exploring the stars, trading goods, mining, doing missions and so on. I'm struggling to find a comparison here, simply because I can't think of any game similar in that concept.

Needless to say, the possibilities for where this can lead are quite literally endless. And based on the direction it seems to be heading, I would chance that the developers are taking full advantage of that notion.

The Good stuff first:

Gameplay & Concept
As above, the concept is amazing, the gameplay is solid, for what it is; a pre-release, there are very few bugs, and a lot of content and features that are clearly simply not implimented yet, rather than simply 'missing'. The game plays like a pre-release alpha, it feels incomplete, but it also gives you a very obvious direction of where the developers are going with it, and what you would expect later on.

Storyline & Replayability
At this point, the story is severely lacking. You start off with a prologue that acts as a tutorial to give you the gist of things, before putting you into a 'sandbox' type universe. That said, what has been done so far looks very promising, and I'm looking forward to finding out "what happens next". In the meantime, I'll happily traverse the stars exploring the map in the sandbox setting.

Graphics
Not the best, but good enough. Smooth on crappier systems, and you have all the fancy shadows and effects to enable on higher end systems. Just don't expect anything close to Star Citizen level of eye candy, and you'll be more than happy. The most notable and annoying thing here, is the pretty short view distance to objects. Space stations and asteroids would just magically "disappear" behind you in their near full size glory, rather than fade into the distance. Though I do admit other than cranking every detail to "max", I haven't played around with the settings.

Now for the Not so good stuff:

Controls and UI
Best way to put it is, too simplistic and basic. You get less HUD information than you would in an arcade game, and what little you do get is just ugly. The controls are likewise extremely basic and limited, similar to a very very bare and stripped down version of "Freelancer" - and when it comes to controls that's not a good thing. You don't even get vertical or horizontal thrust control, let alone doing things like putting your engines offline or using built up inertia for maneuvers. The camera view is a bit clunky too if you want to try and use anything other than the default third person view. Granted this may still improve as the game gets developed further, but I won't hold my breath as it looks to be intentionally designed.

Ship design
If you expect to get into the game and see fleets of ships that were showcased in the videos and the screenshots, like I did, you would be disappointed as this is far from the case. A lot of the designs - especially earlier on - are very much underwhelming. To the point of feeling completely out of place, to the same extent that a car made by a three year old out of mismatched lego blocks and playdoh would be out of place as a boat. This is not a problem with graphics, or textures or anything like that - just pure cringe design.

The game CAN do it right, as showcased by the decent looking ship models and designs in the videos and screenshots promoting it. It's just that sadly, a percentage of the designs - especially early on, are simply on a completely different level down from there.

Overall, if you can overlook the absolutely cringeworthy ship designs, enjoyed games like "Freelancer" mixed in with some RTS, and you like the sandbox space genre, you would have a blast with this game, and will anticipate each patch and update as the game progresses further with joy and excitement. The game doesn't try to hide the fact that it is nowhere near complete, and it doesn't need to when it's ambitions for the genre.

Similarly, if you really enjoy space RPGs, you would likely love it when more of the story is released.

On the flip side, if you are looking for something with Elite Dangerous' flight mechanics and controls, Star Citizen's graphics and detail, this is probably not for you.

I purchased and have been playing since the early alpha was released. Excellent progress for early alpha! The game has been fun from the beginning, with each update bringing more features online and squashing more bugs. If you enjoyed Freelancer or have enjoyed other titles such as Rebel Galaxy, Starpoint Gemini Warlords will be everything you're looking for. Give LGM some time to really polish this diamond if you don't have patience for early alpha bugs and you'll be happy you did!

Great game! Tons of potential once they finish it. It is a little buggy right now but really not too bad and very playable. A few options still aren't available yet but most are. Like I said, tons of potential just not there yet.

So far, it doesn't have much.
Poor sound effects that will make your ears bleed in minutes.
Stale artstyle and UI and effects that already look dated.
Camera angles and sense of control are extremely wonky.

Very engaging, has the basis of an absolutely amazing game; the game is in early access but there is still plenty to be getting on with, there are some minor bugs but that is to be expected, I am incredibly excited for the progression of this game as it has the 3rd and 1st person ship battles working really well and a strategic element to the game aswell with the fleets, conquest, hq upgrading, mining, resource collection and micro-managing missions. LOVE the levelling and upgrading system, there are some really cool perks in the list.

There is quite a lot of travelling around to do in this game but they are working on a faster way to traverse the landscape without ruining the game by making sub-light travel pointless.

So excited for the development of this game, hope this helps!

Overall a fantastic start to a game that had me excited from the offset, keep an open mind with the fact that it is early access but look and what the developers are saying to us gamers, they're a great bunch with a very friendly and forthcoming view on their take and our input for the game, so the more constructive feedback you can give the better the end product!

Loving the game even down to the space-like music so far! keep up the good work :).

Game runs fine, no crashes at this point but I will continue to play and make a new review in case I need. Some things felt like either a bug or a lack of the feature, but I can't tell for sure. Could be just me who's new to SPG serial.

a revamp of old starwolves game. additions are great, new graphics and features. star base is a good idea, but the changes, namely dog fighting (follow your ships ♥♥♥ around) kinda this makse it worse than the original. potential was there, but not great at all in fairness. dissapointed

Amazing how far they've come since first Starpoint Gemini. Hard work, honesty and friendly approach to players paid off and they deserve everything good what's coming their way. And the game is so beautiful that I think I'll go shopping for 4K monitor soon.

I recommend it even though it's Early Access and not completed yet. I'm a patient person and I know these guys will deliver so every bit of support counts.

Good work!

First of all, this is not a final release, many people somehow miss that. But the potential is amazing, game is fun and it's growing rapidly from update to update.

Pros:
+ Amazing graphics
+ Many ships to choose from
+ Fantastic music
+ 4X element of conquering the universe
+ Fun and dynamic gameplay, unlike full 4x games that tend to be "slower"
+ Excellent discounted EA price

Cons:
- Ocassional issues and bugs (perfectly fine for EA, but just wanted to mention it)
- Many features and mechanics are not in yet
- Space is not properly populated yet so it
- No controller support (it will come but it's not in at the moment)

All in all, even the cons are not something that is definite, since game development is in progress, but for people that might expect a nearly finished Gama product, this is not it. LGM is well known for their activity on forums and direct inreaction with players and they listen to the community and implement community suggested features. And they finish their projects, unlike so many other Early Access titles. :(

This is the game in the making. If you want a final product, I can suggest their previous title Starpoint Gemini 2. Or just wishlist it and wait for the final release. I didn't. :)

Would you recommend this game? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

LGM was always friendly and active dev team, but with this game they proved they lsitened to their community. I remember many features people were requesting in Starpoint Gemini 2 and they delivered. This is like a dream come true and I'm excited to see how the game will change in the following months! Call me a fanboy, I don't mind, I have almost 200 hours in the game already and I'm truly enjoying the vasteness of this universe and freedom I have.

10/10 Brilliant, beautiful, smooth, fun!

With around 40 ships in Early Access and 90 on release this is better then some AAA games that don't have 20 ships in full versions! Highly recommended!!!

Of course, this is Early Access game which means it will crash and behave strange at times, and there is plenty of content and mechanics that are not yet implemented. But if you truly want to participate in game development, with this team you can't go wrong, because they care and they listen. They've proved that a thousand times already.

Absolutely recommended. Just visit the forums and see for yourself how actively developers talk to their players. This is alpha version, devs are discussing features with players and implement their ideas. The way it's supposed to be in Early Access. There are bugs and ocassional crashes, but I do not doubt it will get polished until the final release. Game has big potential, it's core mechanics are similar to their previous title but with added features like owning your battlestation, manufacturing your own ships and conquring the universe. Can't wait to see what's coming next.

Recommended for people who are used to alpha builds of games.
Not recommended for people who want flawless final product.

This game is amazing. IT is with out a doubt in my mind gonna turn out to be like Sins of a Solar Empire and Star Point had a A baby and taht baby had a baby with civ 5 and created this wonderful thing. You get to control and work an empire in control of your own ship also and actually fight.

To the devs of this game. Yous are doing something special with this game and are going to have one hell of a hit of a game.
