S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat takes PC gamers once again into the vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor that exploded in 1986. This so-called "Zone" is a highly contaminated area cordoned off by the military and now is combed through by the so-called stalkers, modern fortune hunters, in search of unique artifacts. In the role of Agent Alexander Degtyarev, who is dressed up as stalker, the player has to investigate the mysterious disappearance of five military helicopters and thereby stand one’s ground against the various stalker groups.

This is my worst waste of money ever.

They just killed Cash. Now, they want to kill him again. America is full of run down, broken rust-belt towns where nobody cares and anything goes. In Carcer City, nothing matters anymore and all that's left are cheap thrills. The ultimate rush is the power to grant life and take it away, for sport.

I certainly did not see the apeal, granted I put little to no time in it because the shooting and movements felt so awful and it may very well be more like a fallout las vegas game where you have to get into it if it's your first time going at it. It just felt extremely rough around the edges, even for a six year old game. It was buggy, glitchy, laggy and movements where terrible. I have a high end pc 980 ti intel i7 32 gb or ram ... maybe it would run better on my older pc.

Walked in to the first ship. Did the good guy thing and accepted mission to defend the stalkers.

Screen goes black, get the feeling im in the middle of nowhere. can't see s**t. got scared.

panic clicked a few keys, map came up, used some meds. finally pressed L

Succesfully attacked bandits and got reward.

Ok...now im on rusty beached ship with strangers in the middle of nowhere.

Thought about heading back to the first ship....in the dark....on my own.

i didn't do that. i sat in the middle of that ship...listening to wolves howl, waiting 25 minutes for 5 hours of game time to pass, for the sun to come up.. because i'm a scaredy cat.

Thumbs up. most atmospheric\creepy as f**k game I ever played

Zaton, Misery.

Walking. Watching the sun slowly rise, it could've been a scene from a thousand years ago- with no cars, no lights, no noise but the animals and wind through the trees.

Human interference seemed so minute, I barely noticed the subtle gunfire in the background, the cracked and blistered road I walked across.

Then suddenly-

CRACK.

Something small and fast whizzes past my head like a bee.

No time to check.

I hold shift and book it.

There's a van nearby. Maybe two metres, maybe four.

I make a line straight for it.

CRACK.

I hear the bullet thump into the road. A plume of dust floats past the van i'm hiding behind.

I pull my gun out from it's holster.

It's a 357 magnum revolver. Condition is terrible, and rust visibly coats the gun like fungus on a tree.

Three shots. Better make them count.

Pull the hammer back, ready to fire.

I hold it steady, creeping my way to the edge of the van.

I peak out the side. Slowly. Carefully. Don't make it obvious.

Binoculars out.

In front of me is a hill. Tall and green, with a thick layer of grass and foliage covering the top like mould.

Something flashes in my eyes. Movement. I track it like a sniper.

The grass is moving, alive like some unknown mutated creature of the zone.

I look closer.

Whoever it is, his outift blends in well with the greenery. He evidently hasn't noticed me yet, and he's moving down the hill no doubt for a better view.

On his back is a long gun. Maybe a rifle, maybe a shotgun. It's metallic sheen stands out like a sore thumb amongst the natural hues surrounding it.

I check my gun again. Yeah. Definitely just three shots.

I wait.

He reaches the edge of the hill. Cautious. Careful.

Starts running.

Not close enough yet.

As soon as he goes past the van, that's when I'll start moving.

From over his shoulder he reveals his gun to be a shotgun. The long barrelled 'over-under' type.

It'd be deadly if I give him the chance to use it.

His aproach is swift, not wanting to be caught out in the open road, completely disregarding the van I could be hiding behind.

Now.

I slowly creep to the back of the van.

Small, miniscule steps mark my way as I go, gun aimed with an intense trigger finger.

It finally centres over his head.

I stand up.

Calmly walk out into the road. Gun still trained on his head.

I wait until he notices something. The subtle echo of footsteps, or just good situational awareness, he eventually hazards a look behind him.

"ANNU CHEEKI BREEKI IVV DAMKE," I scream in real life, as I hit mouse1.

The gun jerks back as a plume of smoke appears at the front end of the barrel, and my vision goes hazy at the edges for a moment.

Then it happens again. Then again. What? What the hell is happening? The same sounds, the same bullet sound, over and over again until -

"X-ray engine has stopped working. Windows is trying to find a solution to the problem,"

10/10 Would have the game crash on me again.

You know that sensation when you finish a great book or great movie, that sensation of emptiness inside of your heart, knowing that you have to say goodbye to the characters and story, and know that you will never have the same experience again?

You'll get that sensation when finishing Call of Pripyat. Just buy it already.

This is the best in the series, IMO and one of my favorite games. Was made by the talented developers at GSC Game World, which later became the 4A games that made the fantastic Metro series. This game's great and even better with mods( which you can find at moddb). This is a MUST have for anyone interested in post-apoc FPS games.

Takes an hour to figure out and get into, but you won't put it down when you do. For new players, I suggest playing on vetern and youtubing "STALKER Call of Pripyat secrets", so you can find where stashes are to get a good early weapon.
For mods; I'd suggest atmosfear, absolute nature and absolute structures. Check out Misery after you beat the game once, because it's much harder and changes a lot.

10/10 - We need a redux version of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

Absolutely amazing game with a superb atmosphere and interesting locations, people, and storylines.

Pros:
-Great atmosphere and doesn't overdo the horror element, but the intended parts *are* truly scary.

-Unique locations, while some locations are underused, there is a wide variety of different things to look at and experience.

-Interesting backstory that captures a lot of mystery. While the main plot is good itself, a lot of the best moments come from the side quests.

-Enemies are well done. There is a decent range of different mutants with different focuses.

-Alive world. Unlike something like skyrim where 99% of the encounters are scripted, the game's entire world has different squads and mutants shifting about. Since practically no NPCs are unkillable, this can lead to some people you have invested a bit of time into being killed while on patrol.

-Better ending(s) than Mass Effect 3. While this game doesn't have a lot of traditional RPG elements, the branching endings make a lot of the questlines more meaningful.

Cons:
-The world isn't that big. Okay, this is probably a more extreme version of what I experienced with skyrim. After the 500th hour or whatever, you know the landscape to an extent to where the game world can't offer anything new. But yeah, the way the world is split up into three areas really limits the spaces you can visit without a guide. The earlier games handled this much better with smaller maps, but a seemingly larger space in total. Now, of course, this game does pretty much everything else better.

-Bugs. It really doesn't seem that bad, but they do occur and I pretty much unconciously ignore them since I'm used to that type of thing. I would still consider it less buggy than Skyrim. I haven't ever had any quests break entirely, but I have had to reload my last save a few times.

-AI. On any mission where you have to follow/lead around any AI, its failures become readily apparent. Due to some of the unreasonably strict casualty limitations to get some of the better ending slides, this can either require some save-scumming or just dealing with the worse ending. But seriously, the AI is extremely sucky against mutants and grenades. They feel like CoD level NPCs where they aren't even trying to fight properly against the enemy.

-Graphics. I really don't give half a crap about graphics, but it is definately worth mentioning. Anyway, the "Complete" mod would be worthwhile for a second playthrough (or a first if you are particularily pedantic). It nice-inates the graphics while staying mostly true to the game. For better graphics you can try the Misery mod, but of course that changes a ton of stuff. While I have done 1-2 playthroughs with it installed, it adds instability to an already somewhat instable game.


Anyway, its a great game that I would totally recommend!

(Note: I got this game for free, but simply with my computer a few years back and not for any promotional thing or whatever by the devs. With hindsight, I would buy it at double price in a second)
