The popularity of the stalker games is an unexplained phenomenon that scientists cannot decipher to this day. Its ugly ♥♥♥ graphics and UI look like they are from 2002 (it was out in 2009), and it sure as hell doesn't hold up in 2016, graphically and technically. Especially with games out like Metro and Fallout. Even in 2009 when this was released I played it back then and I couldn't get past how incredibly old the engine felt. It felt old even for its time. Plus it runs like a stuttery mess unless you screw around with graphics settings for a while. I mean I guess. I didn't really bother for too long because the game's entire engine feels so cheap/old. Half-Life 2 looks and sounds a hundred times better and it came out in 2004. And this all isn't about graphics for me. The game just feels very dated, even for 2009. The way it plays, its gameplay, just feels extremely old.

Up yours/10

I'm Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I've learned after 21 years - you never know what is gonna come through that door.

Played and finished on normal.

Ok, it's the least buggy of all the STALKER games, and does a little bit more handholding especially during events called "emissions" It feels like a smaller game than either Clear Sky or Shadow Over Chernobyl, but it's definitely the smoothest among the three. It seems like a struggle at first but the moment you start upgrading your gear with mods and artifacts the game gets pretty easy. Take note mutants will still shred you to pieces if you're not careful. In fact, mutant creatures seem to be much harder bullet sponges compared to people who can absorb much less punishment especially when you consider that headshots are basically 1 hit kills on normal.

The survival aspect of the game isn't that hard, as almost everyone you meet will have some supplies for you and the risks of dying only come from being careless.

With only 3 areas, this game is probably the smallest/shortest of the three Stalker games. It's fun and at the same time lonely exploring the Zone, which has lends a pretty desolate and empty feeling as you explore. Specific locations tend to have plenty of things to shoot at, but movement between points of interest are generally quiet and allow you to appreciate the atmosphere of the place. This is something I feel is a positive point vs previous stalker games, whose maps are more compact and tend to break immersion given how close things can be with each other.

Definitely worth a try when it's on sale.

What I would consider quintessental piece in any sandbox collection. Although not as well known as some of Bethesda's works, it still is worthy to stand by them. The world is relatively small compared to it's predecessor's but it makes that up by making a truly living world where a mass of organic experiences can happen almost anywhere.

The STALKER series was, is, and will always be one of the most beautiful and interesting game series ever created. At first glance, it is "just" a single-player first person shooter game, albeit a good one, which includes elements of survival horror. It takes place in the Zone of Alienation (the area in and around the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor in Ukraine, which was the site of one of the world's most shocking nuclear disasters in history.) However, in the fictitious game world of STALKER, this "Zone" is home to much worse than radiation and wild animals.

In STALKER, the zone is a place where the very fabric of reality starts to break down. Strange mutants with unexplained psychic abilities and deadly "anomalies" (Areas where the laws of physics simply do not apply, leading to the creation of highly valuable artifacts) pose a unique threat to the player that makes for interesting gameplay, while the threat of encountering a group of human enemies makes simply walking around from place to place feel tense.

The STALKER series is one of the very few games that manages to pull of one of the greatest feats of game design in all of history: It makes you question every decision you make. Every step could be your last. The game's level design is impeccable, based on the real Zone of Alienation. The audio design and color palette make the environment feel oppressive but beautiful in a sad way. The combat is gritty and difficult, and you will need to develop new tactics to defeat some of the more powerful mutants or large groups of human enemies. The game also has a big focus on exploration and elements of survival which fit seamlessly into gameplay. The game's lore is rich and there are many mysteries to solve. The modding community is strong, and there is an ever-present player base. The game has aged well.

It is always a worry of mine that games based of of real life events (especially tragedies) will dilute the importance or impact of those events, but the STALKER games approach the real-life Chernobyl disaster with maturity and respect. In fact, the game has probably done nothing other than make more people interested in learning about the disaster that took place.

All in all, STALKER has a special place in the hearts of many-including my own-and with good reason.
