Changelog

Gameplay:

  • Spouses now say unique dialogues during festivals (most of the time), rather than the generic handful of dialogues
  • Spouse stands next to you at the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies
  • In-law dialogue... when you marry someone, their parents/relatives dialogues will change slightly to account for the change
  • Sam, Sebastian, and Abigail now go to the saloon on fridays after you marry them.
  • Spouses won't leave on rainy days, unless they have to go to work.
  • Fruit trees produce higher quality fruit as they age. (once per year, up to gold star)
  • Fruit tree harvesting now involves shaking the tree to drop the fruit
  • Lightning strikes now have a unique effect on fruit trees
  • Lightning is more likely to strike trees and crops, but lightning rods now have a very good chance of intercepting lightning strikes (if they aren't already processing a lightning bolt)
  • Charcoal Kiln now requires 10 wood to produce 1 coal, down from 20
  • Maxed-out friendship levels will no longer decay
  • Added another digit to the shipping menu money counters.
  • Dying in mines is less harsh: money lost caps at 5000g, rate of item loss reduced, can't lose rings or the Galaxy Sword
  • Your assigned movement keys are now used within Journey Of The Prairie King
  • You can now retrieve powerups and coins that drop on the edge of the map in Journey Of The Prairie King
  • The last two hearts are now greyed-out for marriage candidates until you give them the bouquet
  • Willy now likes most fish dishes
  • Adventurer's Guild now sells monster slayer rewards after you've unlocked them (you still get the free reward)
  • Hardware mouse cursor option

Bug Fixes:
  • Tools left in chests within farm buildings won't count as "missing"
  • Poppy properly consumed in poppyseed muffin recipe
  • Can no longer incorrectly "consume" trap bobbers (click to make them disappear with strange sound)
  • Agriculturist profession no longer causes an extra 25% growth rate when speed-gro isn't present. Speed increase effects should now properly apply to very slow-growing crops.
  • Fixed sunflower seed price at JojaMart
  • Chests should no longer appear on top of you in bed after upgrading your house.
  • Item placement with the gamepad improved, and there is now an option to show an item placement indicator
  • Snow yams shouldn't appear in the desert anymore
  • Sea Cucumber should properly appear in the fishing tab of the Shipping menu
  • Farm animals should no longer get stuck on fences placed directly to the right of the barn door.
  • Various minor bug fixes.
  • Minor changes/fixes to dialogue

Edit (6:16 PST, 4/6): quick fix for Harvey's bugged 4-heart event.

About This Game

Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG!

You've inherited your grandfather's old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life. Can you learn to live off the land and turn these overgrown fields into a thriving home? It won't be easy. Ever since Joja Corporation came to town, the old ways of life have all but disappeared. The community center, once the town's most vibrant hub of activity, now lies in shambles. But the valley seems full of opportunity. With a little dedication, you might just be the one to restore Stardew Valley to greatness!

Features
  • Turn your overgrown field into a lively farm! Raise animals, grow crops, start an orchard, craft useful machines, and more! You'll have plenty of space to create the farm of your dreams.

  • Improve your skills over time. As you make your way from a struggling greenhorn to a master farmer, you'll level up in 5 different areas: farming, mining, combat, fishing, and foraging. As you progress, you'll learn new cooking and crafting recipes, unlock new areas to explore, and customize your skills by choosing from a variety of professions.

  • Become part of the local community. With over 30 unique characters living in Stardew Valley, you won't have a problem finding new friends! Each person has their own daily schedule, birthday, unique mini-cutscenes, and new things to say throughout the week and year. As you make friends with them, they will open up to you, ask you for help with their personal troubles, or tell you their secrets! Take part in seasonal festivals such as the luau, haunted maze, and feast of the winter star.

  • Explore a vast, mysterious cave. As you travel deeper underground, you'll encounter new and dangerous monsters, powerful weapons, new environments, valuable gemstones, raw materials for crafting and upgrading tools, and mysteries to be uncovered.

  • Breathe new life into the valley. Since JojaMart opened, the old way of life in Stardew Valley has changed. Much of the town's infrastructure has fallen into disrepair. Help restore Stardew Valley to it's former glory by repairing the old community center, or take the alternate route and join forces with Joja Corporation.

  • Court and marry a partner to share your life on the farm with. There are 10 available bachelors and bachelorettes to woo, each with unique character progression cutscenes. Once married, your partner will live on the farm with you. Who knows, maybe you'll have kids and start a family?

  • Spend a relaxing afternoon at one of the local fishing spots. The waters are teeming with seasonal varieties of delicious fish. Craft bait, bobbers, and crab pots to help you in your journey toward catching every fish and becoming a local legend!

  • Donate artifacts and minerals to the local museum.

  • Cook delicious meals and craft useful items to help you out. With over 100 cooking and crafting recipes, you'll have a wide variety of items to create. Some dishes you cook will even give you temporary boosts to skills, running speed, or combat prowess. Craft useful objects like scarecrows, oil makers, furnaces, or even the rare and expensive crystalarium.

  • Customize the appearance of your character and house. With hundreds of decorative items to choose from, you'll have no trouble creating the home of your dreams!

  • Xbox controller support (with rumble)! (Keyboard still required for text input)

  • Over two hours of original music.

My first review:

StarDew Valley has touched me. I have not had such great experiences playing a game since playing my first game on the SNES all that time ago (15years ago). I enjoyed learning all the NPCs in the game and having little tid bit conversations with them.

Farming: The game has got me actually caring about the "crops" I am growing. No other game has gotten to care about cartoon plants. This game is not like FarmVille or any other modern "Farming Sim", because Stardew Valley does take on Harvest Moon etc other games from the past, but a game like Farmville is no uninteractive compared to Stardew Valley.

Mining: Just like farming I love every bit of it. 120 floors of fun exploring. Currently I have not had that much experience with the Skull Mines but it's a ton harder but a lot more enjoyable getting further and further down :D.

Fishing: To be honest I don't really care for fishing and don't find any fishing mini games to be really enjoyable. It's very fun collecting treasure, but Stardew Valleys fishing just gets boring after a while. :(

Overall I would reccomend this game to about anyone.
I give this game a personal 8/10
Just because the fishing is a pretty big part of the game and so I feel that such a big part deducts two points out of ten. Filling in the fish tank was so boring X(

I absolutely adore this game. You can log on for a few minutes thinking that you'd just plant some extra seeds, and end up playing for five hours. Stardew Valley is what the subsequent sequals to Harvest Moon should have been for all of these years. The game is incredibly charming - from the need to perfect your plot of land to becoming friends with the strange man living in his tent, you feel compelled to do it all. In truth, I haven't even touched every aspect of this game, but it always leaves me wanting to complete just one more day.

If you enjoy a quaint little game about farming, friendship and becoming the richest agricultural mogul to have ever lived, this game is for you! =D

Overall Reccomendation:
I definitely recommend this game to fans of the Harvest Moon series and the Animal crossing series, as they are very similar to this game.

In-depth look:

As for content, this game has something for everyone.

For the casual type, have hours of fun cultivating various crops, raising animals, talking to villagers and forming relationships with them.

For the lovers of min-maxing, maximising profit and becoming a tycoon, sell the crops you cultivate and become the richest man in the valley. Make your farm a money making machine.

For the hardcore, explore the mines and Skull cavern, where precious ores wait and vile enemies lurk, ready to eat your sword.

For the explorers, explore the massive world that is Stardew valley, and encounter relaxing secret forests, invigorating beaches, barren deserts full of cactus, and more.

For the fishermen, relax and catch several different types of fish, in all types of bodies of water all over Stardew Valley. The fishing itself is a very well done and interactive minigame.

Overall scores:

  • Graphics: 80/100 – It pulls off pixel graphics quite well. Graphics are cutesy yet mature.
  • Soundtrack: 90/100 – The soundtrack of this game is excellent, and it really puts personality into the game. Both the music and ambience fits the game very well.
  • Replay-ability: 90/100 – I could play this game for a long time, losing track of time.
  • Stability: 100/100 – I haven't encountered a bug yet. The dev (ConcernedApe) definitely puts care into his work.
  • Gameplay: 85/100 – Not much to say here, it's quite fun.
  • Bonus points: 100/100 – I give bonus for platform support, and it supports linux and Mac. Makes any game better in my eyes.

    Points: 545/600: 91%

I cannot even express how much I love this game, nor can I easily define why I love it. It took me by surprise, really. With the bright colours and pixel art, I expected... I don't know what I expected, but I surely didn't expect to sink 70(waht???!!!) hours in the first week playing it. I'm trying to pace myself, but whatever else I do, I'm thinking about Stardew Valley.

It's charming, funny and has a bit of everything: story, combat, family life, collections, unlockable areas, fishing, making friends, mining and let's not forget farming!

Every season is different, so you have to pay very close attention to the calendar i.e. how many days until the change of Season, if I plant these crops will they mature before the change of season kills them?

The calender is also vital for keeping track of whose birthday is next. Every villager likes different things so I do lean heavily on the Wiki to keep track of the best gifts to give them for maximum relationship gain, but I am learning a few favourites.

There is no combat in the regular areas of the map, but when you feel the need for some dungeoneering there is 100+ levels of an abandoned mine shaft. Every 10 levels has a change of environment (leafy/frosty/dark/etc) in the mines and of course an increase in danger and reward. I'm only down to level 45 so far and besides the combat one of the greatest dangers is staying out too late and falling asleep.

It took me a little while to get the hang of the combat system, but it starts out easy and once I realised that it's timing based and I learned the rhythm I found it pretty enjoyable. Fishing is also timing based and starts out HARD. If fishing is getting you down I recommend just doing it - not worrying about catching anything - until your character levels up fishing. Once I gained a few levels and learned the mechanics it's a very fun minigame.

The save system and many of the random events are tied into the night-time sleep, so you HAVE to be in bed by 2am. If you aren't your character will pass out and will awaken in their own bed or in the hospital, but will be moderately penalised for it. The game will give you a reason for how you returned to your bed and lost things, there are a few variations. It's a frustrating mechanic in some ways, but it does add to the whole planning aspect, so it's not actually a gripe.

I do have a slight gripe that saving ONLY happens when sleeping, but the days are quite short, so it's only been a few times when I've not been able to quit at the time that I wanted. My hours are inflated slightly by me leaving the game running if I need to do something and I'm not at a point where I can save, though.

Stardew Valley has so many features and the many, many details of all those features are far too many to list. I didn't think that I could get into a game with pixel-art graphics, but I'm glad that I gave it a go. Everything about Stardew Valley has totally won me over, it's even won me over to the idea of pixel-art graphics in general.

That's enough of a review from me, I need to go and play some more!

This review is painful to write. I loved Harvest Moon so much, right up until yesterday when I reached a lot of sad realizations.

HM, you were so cute and accessible. Your values and atmosphere informed some of my most deeply held ideals. And then.... I started getting too used to you. Your tropes, settings and characters remained constant. And while I will always have fond memories of the times we had together and your comfortable familiarity, I have changed and you have not.

HM, you were a pioneer but your soil is no longer as fertile as it was. I need to grow. I must move on to a land where it is understood that tradition is kept alive by change, where I can test the things you taught me and experience whole new challanges, as well. Fear not, you are not lost to novelty. Stardew Valley is your child and you set a wonderful example for its generation. You have kept something important alive and passed it on.

Thank you, Harvest Moon, for all you have done. Thank you, and goodbye.

Stardew Valley
Developer: Concerned Ape
Publisher: Chucklefish Games

Introduction
==========
Over the years we've seen our fair share of casual/farming titles. We've come to know of a couple of series that symbolize the genre: Harvest Moon and the lesser known but still great Rune Factory. They're simple enough: buy crops, tend your farm, sell crops, manage farm animals, and with Rune Factory add fighting monsters, managing equipment, and crafting.

Stardew Valley takes a lot of inspiration from the aforementioned games, combining a lot of the mechanics from them into one amazing game. Some mechanics are even inspired from Animal Crossing! Let's take a closer look at these features and mechanics, shall we?

Gameplay
==========
Right off the bat, you may feel overwhelmed at the sheer amount of things available to do in Stardew Valley. Nearly everything is available at the very beginning of the game. You'll start off with your farm and land, and are pretty much left to tend it or do whatever you want. You can start planting crops, chopping down trees for wood, clearing stone, or even go across town to the mine and start searching for ores and minerals. After a little while you'll be able to build a barn and even a chicken coop and start tending animals. You even get a dog or a cat, depending on which you chose during character creation.

One of the biggest things about Stardew Valley is getting to know the other people who live in town. Remember the feature I mentioned inspired by Animal Crossing? This is it! Each townsperson has their own likes and dislikes, certain types of gifts they like receiving, and each day they have their own schedule that they go about doing. When you get to know someone enough, and give them enough gifts, you can marry them (gender does not matter!) and even have children.

At some point, you have the choice to back an intrusive/destructive corporation (not recommended) or help restore the town community center. In the community center, a group of spirits will task you with collecting bundles odf items for them. In return, they will unlock a different feature around town that will help you in various ways, such as the rail system for fast travel.

There are so many more things to do, it would literally take me an hour or so to detail them all out. I've pointed out the more important ones though, and these should keep you busy for awhile!

Graphics
==========
This game just OOZES charm. The graphics are amazing for this type of game. Sprites look great, the animations are great, and you can easily tell what everything is. It's sometimes hard to believe one guy made the entirety of this game all by himself. He did a fantastic job, especially on the endearing artstyle.

Sound and Music
==========
As a casual game, it has some amazing relaxing music. Every area has it's own theme too, and sometimes it's different depending on the time of day. It makes the game more interesting and a perfect choice to play to unwind after a hard day at work or school.

Performance
==========
I experienced no major issues (or even minor issues) while playign Stardew Valley. 30+ FPS at all times (30 is my minimum), no lag or stuttering, no obscene loading times, and the controls are very easy. Just point and click along with WASD to move. You CAN play with a controller, but it feels a lot different and a little clunky to do so. Mouse/keyboard method is recommended.

My only gripe, although minor, is that you can only save the game when you sleep in your bed at night. Again, this is minor, and not really a big deal, but nowadays most gamers expect the freedom of saving anywhere.

Final Thoughts
==========
You've just got to try this game. You will easily lose dozens, if not hundreds of hours simply managing your farm, earning money, and getting to know the townsfolk. Not to mention designing your farmland, placing buildings, tending animals, and crafting. This game will find you saying "just more more day" at least a dozen times before you finally close the game.

Harvest Moon probably isn't coming to PC any time soon, so if you haven't played one in awhile then now's your chance. It plays much like the classics, expanded in nearly every dimension. More crops, more fish, more mining coupled with LoZ themed combat in a procedurally generating mine dungeon.

Crafting takes the spotlight as a means of ramping up your farm. Most convenient are the sprinklers that help you skip out on the tedium of watering your crops. Since they require you to go spelunking, there's a mixture of gameplay between the classic elements and braving the cave.

The characters, exposition, festivals, and music don't live up to my nostalgia, but the variety of things to dig up and uncover really keeps things moving at least until you buy one of everything. The endgame brings things to a screeching, unsatisfying halt, but until that moment comes you're in for an addictive game that's very easy to pick up and play in small or huge doses.

--------------------------------------
(Since I spent sixty hours on this game, here's my unabridged review.)

Among the most time-consuming single player games I've ever experienced.

It's Harvest Moon game for people who play on PC. There are a LOT of satisfying, nexpected conveniences that streamline gameplay and crush the early/mid game tedium. Long gone are the days of depositing plants 12 at a time into the bin. You can carry as many of one plant/resources as you want. Keep in mind you can only carry so many different items, but if you were to plant 200 cranberry seeds in fall then you only need to visit the bin once.

Spend the first 3 months planting (mining on rainy days) and you'll be absolutely set for money for the rest of the game.

Much like item-hauling, the overall objective of the game has also been given a meaningful touchup.. Early on you're given a scanvenger hunt checklist. As you collect/gather items of a category the game unlocks new upgrades to make your farm more productive. Gather every item and you'll find the community become more cohesive, going so far as to kick out those filthy not-walmart immigrants blighting the town. They have to go back.

Similar to the classics, your progress is reviewed after two years, but the requirements are really relaxed. I was able to satisfy the requirements for the highest ranking by the end of the first year.

That said, this game isn't without its flaws. The developer expects the player to tolerate a distasteful volume of grind in mining, fishing, combat (kill 1500 slimes lol) and leveling up your attributes. Unusual since they streamlined gathering crops. The slime hutch, the most expensive late game building, does ♥♥♥♥ all and is a poor investment.

The NPCs are all very bland, not a single one endeared me and even now I've forgotten the name of my wife, let alone the other villagers. Even those I rasied the affection level to max on didn't seem to flesh out their personalities all that well. The biggest improvement this game needed was in making the NPCs look better. (I know that many of them went through dozens of revisions, so this was a partiulcarly difficuilt point for the developer as well.) Even the written characterization didn't enchant me as much as the classics. I can't tell if that's a result of my age compared to when I played HM64 or if they just didn't do a good job with the storyboard.

There aren't enough festivals, with only two a month, though they are nicely fleshed out and unique. The OST is absolutely nothing compared to the classic tunes that to this day I can remember off the top of my head. By comparison I don't remember a single song from this game and I just beat it. The farmland itself is also way too huge. I only used about 1/6 at the very most for planting crops, with maybe a 1/3 in the second year as a grass pen.

Finally there are a few unpleasant bugs. Notably when mining or planting crops or exiting a doorway the character will begin running in a direction different from where I'm pointing (only stopping when I let go of the controls). The resting place of my mouse cursor interferes with my usb controller far too often, giving the character contradictory/wrong inputs. Grass grows to choke out plants as a feature, but as a bug it also displaces any tiles you have equipment on. It erased my expensive artisal equipment without warning. ♥♥♥♥ move.

Finally, the endgame is seemingly devoid of content. Once your plants water themeleves you'll probably have enough money to warrant not planting anymore. There's nothing new or fancy to spend my cash on other than even more seeds, and the incentive to find the remaining fish or mine the last artifact drops seems hollow and pointless. I had enough money at the beginning of the first winter to buy every building, expansion, and upgrade. By the first year I had upgraded everything I needed (not even using my ultimate watering can that I strove so hard to make for sake of the ultimate sprinklers).

Ok, well i guess i will write a review for this game..

Well 1st off, this takes the old harvest moon games, and improves on the idea. Basically, an upgraded version of harvest moon games. If you want a game more like the old harvest moons used to be on steam, try World's Dawn..that is about as close as you can get. Anyways, back to the review...here i will break down the main points i see in this game:

I see these as pro's:

`Extremely Addictive - be aware of this when you play it..
`Farming and planting
`Dating and Marriage
`Foraging for Mushrooms and such
`Possible more things added to game in next patch
`Great fun at festivals

And my con's:

`Artifact hunting is repetitive and boring
`Fishing can be challenging for the legendary fish
`The mini games are quite difficult to play
`Controller specs do not work, even if it says "partial controller support" in description

All and all, a great game. I don;t want to spoil everything in this review, but there is more to this game than i posted here, so if you like what you read here, try it and find them out for yourself if you dare.

Final Thoughts..i recommend this game to everyone on my friends list and everyone.
