Back to Dinosaur Island 2 now available for free on Steam

Just before heading off to GDC, we have another treat for Oculus Rift DK2 owners: Back to Dinosaur Island 2, our second Oculus Rift-exclusive VR demo, is now available as a free download on Steam!

Now, gamers everywhere can sample the acclaimed VR demo firsthand – scaling a deadly cliff face as huge flying dinosaurs react to their presence and debris rains down from above. Mysterious landmarks on the horizon and stunning vistas on every side combine to immerse gamers in an entirely new reality.

Be aware that Back to Dinosaur Island 2 requires an Oculus Rift DK2 (SDK 0.8) as well as a Xbox 360 Controller for Windows or Xbox One Controller for Windows to be played

HOW TO CONTROL THE DEMO

About This Game

Crytek first earned its reputation for pushing the limits of computer graphics with the original X-Isle/ Dinosaur Island demo, which wowed press at 1999’s E3 convention in LA. Now we come full circle with Back to Dinosaur Island, which blew away attendees of GDC 2015 earlier this year. Back to Dinosaur Island takes advantage of 15 years of CRYENGINE development to show users the sheer endless possibilities that upcoming Virtual Reality devices like the Oculus Rift offer, bringing them face to face with the most terrifying predator that has ever walked the Earth.

Can't recommend this for the Vive, doesnt work properly. What happened to the Steam Icons indicating HMD compatibilty?
But when you force developers to be in the pocket of giant corporations, this is what you get. so sad.

Amazing. Humorously bad rating by people with no Oculus DK2.

Would be nice if you could bar out people from reviewing a product they lack proper peripheries for, so that products don't get unjustly downvoted. While of course lacking the interaction of other tech demos, this was easily the most visually impressive. No reason this should recieve downvotes from people unless they had hardware conflictions that prevented it from working.

First up, when I say this isn't a game, I'm not being subjective or opinionated...I really do mean THIS IS NOT A GAME. It's a tech demo, and one you can't even move in. It's not even a "walking simulator", in other words. It's a three minute point-of-view shot looking out from a bunch of dinosaur eggs; in fact, there's every chance you ARE one of said eggs. Hence, why you don't move. It's a tech demo, pure and simple...and a very impressive tech demo it is! I suspect it's even more impressive if you have one o' them virtual reality headsets, which it's evidently designed for. I mean, with the number of horror games I play, I was already pretty sold on buying an Oculus Rift within the first year or two of its official public release, and this demo does nothing to dissuade me from that intention. Quite the contrary!

So if you like dinosaurs, and want to experience a no-doubt fairly accomplished little experiment in the VR realm - or at the very least have sufficient imagination to be able to, well, "imagine" how this would probably all look and feel in VR - then definitely give it a look. The possibilities for games in the future certainly appear almost limitless, so we've all got that to look forward to. For now, just a peek. Literally. Just a peek. Enjoy.

Verdict: 7/10.

Although just a demo... it really shows what the future of VR will be like especially in this case with the Crytek engine. Excellent sense of scale and clear visuals. Would love to play Crysis on VR especially given the jungle setting of this demo.

just a heads up for anyone looking for a reason to play this please know that it is for VR only. So don't go leaving a negative review because you couln't get it to "work".
Though this demo may be lacking in content and movability, it is awsome for what it is, an interactive trailer for another game and a tech demo. That being said there is'nt much in the way of VR inovation here, but it is very cool to see dinosuars and a high detailed evironment with crytech standard graphics.

Installed game. I woke up after breaking out of my egg and saw a small cute dino run by. Then, a dragonfly tried to peck my eyeballs out. Twice. Then mommy comes over and roars real loud at me. Then mommy saw daddy ♫with some girls she's never seen befoooore...♫ Then uninstalled.
