Croteam is back with yet another Serious Sam title and to be honest I am beginning to care less and less for them with each incremental number that gets added. This title is supposed to act as a prequel to the original Serious Sam remade in all its choppy HD glory a little while back. Yes - the alien invaders still want to annihilate earths human citizens and yes it's up to Sam and friends (if playing in co-op as I believe up to 16 people can join in on the action) to stop them.
Serious Sam 3 does little, very little, to distinguish itself from the other titles in the series and it honestly feels a bit like a cut and paste job with an engine that now supports Direct x11. The feeling of deja vu sets in early with this one since there is hardly anything you haven't already seen in the previous titles. A better enemy variety would have been a welcome change but little is tinkered with here so it's waves upon waves of the same re-spawning enemies from the 1 and 2 episodes with only one or two new additions.
I could never imagine playing this title alone and thankfully I had a friend with me to co-op right through to the end although we never really got to see the end because the game allowed us to pass through to the final boss without picking up a weapon from the previous stage that is required to kill him. Thanks Croteam! Who the hell play-tested your game? That just killed it for us as we promptly both deleted all local content from our drives and packed SS3:BFE away for good.
Although I am sounding very negative about the game I still had fun with it in bursts. The gameplay is still incredibly fast and furious and the Direct x11 enhanced graphics do look rather awesome on a system that can beef up the game in the settings department - but - and its a very big BUT - Croteam are going to have to energize the next chapter should there be one because even for an old school off-the-rails shooter like this one things are starting to feel a little more than stale and tired.
