About This Game

Journey to distant Arabian lands renowned for brave warriors and fearsome weaponry in Stronghold Crusader HD. The highly anticipated sequel to the best-selling Stronghold, Crusader throws you into historic battles from the Crusades with fiendish AI opponents, new units, 4 historical campaigns and over 100 unique skirmish missions.

Story

Relive the historic Crusades as Richard the Lionheart and the Saladin, Sultan of Syria. Lead a determined group of Crusaders, forged by centuries of barbaric warfare, amidst the haze of the desert heat then fight for your freedom as the mighty Saladin.

Stronghold Crusader HD features several campaigns documenting the First, Second and Third Crusades, as well as conflicts within the individual Crusader states. Battles such as Nicea, Heraclea, siege of Antioch, Krak des Chevaliers and the Siege of Jerusalem all feature, as do the Crusader Trails from the Stronghold Warchest and Stronghold Crusader Extreme.

HD Edition

With new high resolution graphics you have more control over your soldiers than ever before. The new HD battlefield view allows you to zoom out and play in real-time, with the whole map on one screen. Advance on the castle gates while flanking the enemy from behind, feign retreat and lead your foe into a deadly trap or just sit back and watch the destruction unfold.

Both Stronghold Crusader and Stronghold Crusader Extreme are included in Stronghold Crusader HD. Extreme plays exactly like the original Stronghold Crusader, only with a few additions. The unit cap has been increased from 1000 to a staggering 10,000 troops, special Tactical Powers such as the Arrow Volley can be used and new buildings make their appearance alongside the Crusader Extreme skirmish trail.

Features
  • Join the Crusaders or the Saladin’s forces in 4 historical campaigns.
  • Fight through 100 unique skirmish missions, each one more challenging than the last.
  • Design and build your desert fortress, with a working economy and brutal killing zones.
  • Command new units with unique abilities, such as the stealthy Assassin and nimble Horse Archer.

Build your own castle. Slaughter the saracens. Be the greatest lord.

I played Stronghold Crusader a lot as a kid, picked this up on steam for nostalgic reasons.
Aged better than I had hoped.

Easily worth the full price, a must own for any RTS fan.

This is a great strategy game. Having to keep everything in check like housing, food and stocks, defence, taxes, religion, and your kingdom happy/afraid. Keeping your castle busy by chopping wood, minning stone and iron, making weapons/armors, and making food/drink. Challenging levels keep you thinking about how you can approach the enemy. Simply gameplay, nothing too difficult. Many troops to choose from. Very fun game that can easily get you hooked and can be played without internet.

Back in its days, it used to be a good game; good fun, smart games - the Stronghold series marked an important step in the evolution of the genre. Take it from someone who is old enough to have played the first Stronghold back when it was published.
However, what I'm asked to review here is not the Crusader that came out many years ago; it is instead the HD Steam version.
If you already own the original game, this won't offer you anything more.
If you have never played it before, you might not appreciate it, because time has not been kind to it, and the HD title is quite misguiding: while it may be true that the game will start on a widescreen and on high resolutions without making your PC explode, it is also true that once you are playing it, the difference in definition from the original is basically non-existant.
Considering that it is a milestone and it comes really cheap, especially on sale, it might be worth giving a try; however, history never turns back, and you will never appreciate it as much as you would have back when it was brand new.

One of the best RTS, played lots back then!

The only downside is that Steam overlay does not work. So if you want to take screenshots, you need to find another way. (There is a Steam guide with solution how to take screenies.) It's probably being ancient game and stuff.
