What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

ARK: Survival of the Fittest (SotF) originated as a spin-off game mode which came to be with the release of our development kit. The mode was first available as a Total Conversion game system and debuted worldwide with a 70-person slaughter fest of a tournament. The game mode consists of a large-scale battle which takes place on a modified version of the primal ARK, with the objective being to eliminate all other survivors before they can eliminate you.

Following the success of the first tournament, the game mode was made available to the community and had constant iteration right through til the end of 2015. It was clear that a vast number of survivors, not only enjoyed playing the game mode, but they also enjoyed watching it. The ARK: SotF Team wants to work alongside the community, to make this newly refactored game into an epic dinosaur survival arena. We already have experience working with in an early-access environment, we know what it entails, and with SotF being born from early-access, it only makes sense for it to continue its growth in this program but on a much grander scale, with it’s own team, it’s own game and it’s own community. Learning from experiences in ARK: Survival Evolved, we know through constant iteration and interaction with the community we can truly develop something special, fun and competitive for all survivors out there!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to fully release the game around Q4 of 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Since the first iteration of ARK: SotF back in August 2015, the mode has gone through many changes and whilst the foundation of the game is ready for the Early Access Launch, there are many more features currently planned, including content additions and new systems.

Here are the planned core feature we plan to deliver at full release.

- Additional customization features to show off team spirit
- A custom soundtrack written by award-winning composer Gareth Coker of Ori and the Blind Forest!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version contains almost all of the core functionality planned for SotF. Over the next year, we will be rapidly iterating with the community to add new content, improve the features, and refine the balance of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. In honor of the community, we plan to release this as a free game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“There will be a massive and intense focus on interaction with the community on our forums, community hub and social media. We will actively host testing and feedback sessions with members of the community, as well as frequent Q&As to receive their thoughts on how the game can be developed. Just like ARK, you are our primary benefactors, and we’re making this game with you, and for you.”

About This Game

Welcome to ARK: Survival of the Fittest, the first ever M.O.S.A. - a Multiplayer Online Survival Arena - that Studio Wildcard designed for the burgeoning wild west of eSports. A spin-off from the most popular open-world Early Access game on Steam ARK: Survival Evolved, ARK: Survival of the Fittest (SotF) pits up to 72 combatants in an action-packed struggle for survival where players are ultimately pushed into an epic final showdown where only one “Tribe” will make it out alive.

Survivors can form one- to six-person Tribes with the options to choose Unofficial and Official (Ranked) servers, and a variety of game-lengths and sizes in which to play. Players will start in the base forest environment introduced in the original ARK: Survival Evolved, with new environments and creatures introduced as the game evolves. Dedicated eSport ranking, matchmaking, reward, and tournament features make ARK: SotF readily accessible to all players.

Balanced for intense competition, contestants begin in a neutral staging area where they can communicate pre-game, strategize, or talk trash. After a count-down, they dramatically descend from the sky onto the ARK in a circular formation via beams of light. There is a cache of valuable items in the center – do survivors dash for the goods and fight it out, do they run into the forest and hide, search for Dinosaurs to rapidly build their army, or do they freeze up from the sheer terror of death? A continually shrinking “ring of death” forces contestants ever closer together over time. The hunt is on!

I generally enjoy survival-type games but this one isn’t really worth it.

It kept crashing while I was trying to load it, and the graphics lag was awful, even on low settings, which I normally never have problems with.

But the worst part is that there’s nothing even remotely tutorial-like, not even a control listing. Plus, it took ages for a match to get enough players and then for the match to actually start. When it finally started I died within seconds because I had no idea what I was doing or what was happening and then had to go through the entire process all over again. It was tedious.

I'm split between this, it's hard to learn this game according to my data of seeing multiple players that don't even know how to access their inventory and expect help from some guy that is quite experienced that somehow got teamed up with this one scrub in 2 player and up. now that's for cooperation (Assuming you don't have friends that like to play with you). Now, if you play FFA, it's kinda nice. Screw it, I'm doing pros and cons

PROS
+Fun
+Dinos
+Guns 'n blazing
+Many strategies to win
+Many "Evoulution Events"[Higher harvesting/ getting chased by 9 lunatic monkeys, etc]
+You can steal other's dinos after they passed away
+You still gain points for dying 2nd last :)
+Everything is cheaper to some extent[Some, not cheaper at all]
+Guns have lower durability[Now I know what you're thinking, "What? Lower durability is a good thing?!", and heres why. Combine a longneck with a scope and you have a killing machine, Shotgun can take out giants easily if you have 2 people gunning down a spino/rex. Pistol is pretty darn versatile.]

CONS
-1 map
-There's not a tutorial
-Try to find a "good" partner or a "good" tribe without tribing or partnering with a "friend"
-Brutal Evoulution events that are too early [Carno Drop/ Acid Rain/ Mega Cold/ Mega Heat, etc]
-THERE'S NOT A TUTORIAL!!!!!!!!!!!
-Elo =/= Skill
--ex: You can get just like 10 points for being the last person to die, Don't judge people. Elos doesn't carry over to other places too so you can't tell if one is actually good, or just bluffing because they just had a teammate that can carry hard.(People done it for me before)

Nuetral:
good luck and have fun...
dying...

Simply awesome. A little rough around the edges but the experience and game play offered is simply incredible. I'm twenty years into my PC gaming hobby with hundreds of different genres of games played, competitive play at high levels on everything from Age of Empires to Team Fortress to Mtg, but none of that ever felt as good as the first time I won a match of SOTF, from knowing nothing all the way to the first win was a great journey. Hoping I get to play this game for a long time.

If you are interested in getting into the game but have questions feel free to message me, I'd love to see the community grow.

ARK: Survival Of The Fittest is basically a jurassic Hunger Games. You can choose to play alone in Free-For-All, or play with up to 3 others in 4-man tribes. This game has a small learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it's a very fun game!

Pros:
-You can tame dinosaurs. Dinosaurs. These dinosaurs help you carry more items, and attack enemies for you. These dinosaurs typically deal more damage and have higher health than you, so it's definitely recommended to tame more than one.
-Nice graphics and atmosphere. The graphics in this game are very nice to look at and are very detailed. Sometimes, in the midst of the chaos, it's nice just to take in the scenery around you. The world was very beautifully designed.
-Hilarious character customization. This game takes character creation to a whole new level. Not only can you choose the basic stuff: hair color, eye color, size of your character, gender, etc., but you can also over-exaggerate these features like crazy! If you wanted to, you could make a character that is 4 feet tall with very muscular arms and very skinny chicken legs, and so much more!

Cons:
-Requires a powerful graphics card. This game is kind of poorly optimised. If you want this game to run smooth (or over 30 FPS), you must use a good graphics card.
-The learning curve. If you've played ARK: Survival Evolved, this most likely won't be a problem for you. But, if you were like me and just started off with this game, it is certainly a challenge when you're first learning how to play this game. Learning how to tame dinosaurs, how to get good loot, and how to use some weapons can be a challenge. Just be prepared to face players with more skill than you, and be patient. You will learn how to win, it's not too hard!
-Evolution Events tend to be a little broken. Evolution Events are random events that occur that are specifically designed to endanger the player (with the exception of a few events: Double Taming, Food of the Gods, Harvest Bounty, Herbivore Drop, Supply Overload, Super Loot Crate). Some Evolution Events, such as Mega Heat, are kind of broken. For example, with Mega Heat, the player must remove all of their clothes to help cool off. This wouldn't be such a problem if the Event didn't maintain that heat. You could even swim in the river and constantly drink but still lose health due to the heat. Of course, these aren't big issues, just be careful when the events occur!

TL;DR... This game is very fun. It has awesome graphics, as well as an amazing atmosphere. It gives you the ability to tame dinosaurs and create silly characters. Although, you will not be able to run this game smoothly unless you have a good graphics card. The learning curve is a challenge to get used to, but isn't too big of an issue. The Evolution Events are designed to kill you, and are very good at doing their job.

I HIGHLY recommend you play with friends; free-for-all is very hard if you're not very good at the game, and random players aren't always good teammates.

After playing this game, I rate it 8.5/10. It's fun, and it's free, so why not give it a chance? Good luck in the ARK!

its FUN. BUUUUUUUT if you have a "slow" computer you will not be able to run it. I ran at 40 FPS when I first got it, even with low graphics. But I got it to a steady 50-60 fps by changing the launch setting. Just paste this in there and you'll be able to run it-ish.

This game is almost a simmulation of The Hunger Games. 10/10
You need a good PC to play it, game still needs optimazation.

If you want to pay money i reccomend getting ARK: SURVIVAL EVOLVED before playing this. Will help to learn how the game is played, because they are both similar in game mechanics.

Early Access ARK: Survival of the Fittest is a free, Multiplayer Online Survival Arena (MOSA) PVP game that pits as many as 72 combatants against one another in the struggle for survival in a harsh, changing environment packed with deadly creatures, “Evolution Events,” and other players. Using ARK: Survival Evolved game play system. Has an anti-hacker system, BattlEye. Has team deathmatch, and free for all. Is being groomed into an E-sport.
It worked, looked ok, sounded ok, played ok. Has hosted server system so you can pick a nearby server and each server might have different rules and modes of play. You have to form a tribe and recruit players to tribe in the server lobby before start of the match. Try it if you like PVP and survival games.

Cons: -Poorly optimized and prone to lags and FPS drops. -Only one map. -No tutorial. -Long match times. -Steep learning curve. Might be laggy, buggy and need high computer resourses.

Look, I know that most of the reviews here are bad, but ( in my own opinion ) Its because of the poor optimiztion, As a player that can run this game, I think it is fantasic, so many strategies, from taming huge dinos, to making guns, or even just rushing people, and even if you are bad, you will get better throughout playing the game ^^, the only bad thing I can think about in this game is the optimization, pls make it better so more people that wanna play this game play it <3 thankya for a beautiful game ark devs :D

Great game, really exciting and competetive if thats what you're into. A bunch of people just dont recommend it because of stupid issues that occur when they run it. Don't download it if you play games on a potato, this won't run. If you have a real computer play it, I'd say its the best free to play game out there.
