Official 1.500: Linux Support!

Recently I said that we weren't going to port Tidalis to linux, because it's just not a profitable enough game for us, and it's on a super old version of our engine. Well... man if I didn't boot this game up and just fall in love with it all over again. I get to say this, because I wasn't the lead designer on this one -- Lars Bull really did a stellar job with the design of this game (the only Arcen title I wasn't lead designer on).

Anyhow, as you can no doubt guess by the title of this post, the game charmed me into going back and porting it to linux despite my original intent. Also, honestly we wanted to have full linux support for ALL of our library, without unsightly holes here and there.

Here are the release notes. There are actually a few fixes in there, too, which is handy.

New System Requirements

The one big caveat with this release is that the newer version of Unity that we upgraded to has higher system requirements -- in terms of operating system -- than the much older version that Tidalis was on. Notably, on the Microsoft side, Windows 2000 can no longer be used -- you have to have Windows SP2 or higher, now. On the Apple side, you can't use PowerPC computers any longer -- you have to have an Intel-based CPU.

But wait, what if you already bought it and can no longer play it!? Got you covered, of course. :) Version 1.017 is marked in Steam as having a "beta" version that you can opt in to that is named "OldSysReqs." I'm not sure if Steam itself honestly is able to hit the system requirements that Tidalis used to be able to, though...

License Keys No More

Another nice thing about this version is that the license key that was previously required is now optional instead. The game won't ask you for the CD key anymore, and Steam actually no longer even gives you one, since that was only confusing and pointless. But if you have one from the past, you can still use it if you... for some reason want to. ;)

Recensies

  • "Tidalis is a match-3 game that doesn't feel tired or repetitive: I actually want to play it, which says something considering how many puzzle games I've reviewed. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Tidalis is one of the best puzzle game I've ever played. Simply put, if you like puzzle games (and even if you usually don't), you need to get Tidalis. Right now. Go!"
James Allen, Out of Eight PC Game Reviews (8/8 score)
  • "Overall, this is the most robust and interesting casual game I have seen in some time. There is so much to do and so many ways to play I don't even know that casual actually suits it. Yes the gameplay is casual but this is a highly developed, well-rounded, offering from Arcen Games that puts many games of higher price to shame. It's got numerous ways to play and very successfully takes an old genre, turns it on its head, and shows you just what can be done when you think outside of the box."

Over dit spel

Tidalis is a block-based puzzle game with casual appeal, hardcore depth, and an addictive new "streams" mechanic. The game is brimming over with riffs and variants on that core mechanic with 20 game modes, dozens of special blocks and items, and 115 levels in the adventure mode alone. The basic rules of the game are this: blocks fall down into the board and have a color and an arrow direction. If a stack of blocks exceeds the height of the board, you lose. In order to clear blocks, you must right-click and drag paths through the arrows to set up chain reactions of like-colored blocks.
If this sounds simple, that's because it is -- you'll be lining up lengthy chains within minutes. But you'll be surprised how much brainpower it takes to set up combos of multiple chains, and the many brainteaser-style puzzles include some real stumpers. Tidalis has co-op and competitive multiplayer modes (both online and offline); action-oriented modes and timer-less brainteasers; a lengthy, casual-friendly adventure mode; twenty unique game modes providing innumerable twists to the basic gameplay; dozens of special blocks and items; and over fifty minutes of beautiful music to go with the painterly art.
In short, several games' worth of content are built on top of this core mechanic, which you'll quickly find to be as iconic as it is novel.

Key Features:

  • Puzzle game with casual appeal, hardcore depth, and an addictive new mechanic.
  • Two-player co-op and competitive play (both local and networked).
  • A wide selection of both action-oriented or brainteaser-like levels.
  • Casual-friendly adventure mode, hardcore-focused custom games and vs modes.
  • 20+ game styles, and dozens of items and special blocks.
  • Rich, painterly art style and beautiful music.
  • Players can create and share whole new themes, levels, and adventures.
  • Options for colorblind players, players averse to lots of light and motion, and older computers.

Got bored after 25 hours, but still - Tidalis is very fun to play.
I was kind of addicted to it for the first hours, but that 'spell' somehow dissapeared.

Anyway if you are a fan of such games, you should definently give it a try.

6.5/10 (which is good in my opinion)

Nifty and different. Totes a puzle game, so not my thang. But it seems to have potential. I will revisit when not drunk.

I spent 240 hours grinding my last achievement.

I'm thinking of idling other games so people stop looking at my games library and asking why I've played more Tidalis than Skyrim.

Quick review:

Short Verdict: Wow. I started playing this game thinking: "Well, if I got this game, might as well try it for a few minutes before I get bored and move on". Lesson learned: don't judge a book by its cover! This is an excellent addicting puzzle game with a new twist on match-3 and tetris, but definitely the best I've played of this genre! I don't even usually like match-3 or tetris games--this is for any puzzle lover! If you check how much time I spent on it, plus the fact that I've written 2 guides for it, you'll know I totally recommend this game!

Pros:
  • Addicting new dynamics to match-3 and tetris, creating a really fresh gameplay experience
  • 115 adventure levels and 69+ puzzle/brainteaser levels (I've even found an extra 70-level fan-made adventure mode in their official forum)
  • Includes editor and you can exchange levels with fellow players
  • Color-blind blocks available, as well as many other models if you don't like the original
  • Lovely piano BGM
  • Beautiful background graphics
  • A LOT of gameplay modes, each feeling unique, not just something to pretend there's more content (there are so many modes that you can't even find them all in the main adventure)
  • Co-op mode with distinct gameplay
  • You can really feel the difficulty rise as you progress in the game
  • Handicap options if you think the game is too easy/hard
  • Even now the devs are always ready to support you here in Steam forums

Cons:
  • You need to send files outside the game to share levels
  • The game is definitely for adults, since it gets hard pretty quickly, but the theme and story is rather childish (you can skip the story, though)
  • It has a lot of unexplored potential, like the many game modes that weren't used
  • Playing online co-op mode is really hard, since it has barely any active community
  • There's so much terminology that it takes quite some time for you to get used to it (like "chains", "combos", and "color reaction")

Bought on / for: Indie Bundle 3 by GreenMan Gaming for an average of US$ 0.60 (R$ 1.47). Seriously, taking out the 10 hours of idling, I still paid less than 2 (dollar) cents for each hour of fun. Even taking the bus to the beach is more expensive! (not that we nerds ever do that) Even if I'd paid full price, it would've been worth it.

A cute little casual game. Plays like match-3 meets tetris.
I tried playing the game during a sick day and found its adventure mode a real chore.

There's nothing really "Wrong" with this game, I just didn't find it fun.

Tidalis is a decent little puzzler that could have done with touch controls or a 3DS version - in fact, if you told me that this was a former mobile phone game, I wouldn't doubt you for a second. you see, the object of the game is to chain together blocks by directing a stream of energy through them, but the energy will only move in the direction painted on each block. You can change the directions on each arrowed block, allowing you to set up chains that weren't there before. It gets more complicated from there, with special blocks that stop streams in their tracks, others that need to be smashed on the bottom of the playfield, and others besides.

To be honest, I've found the default difficulty rather easy and relaxing, which is how a casual puzzle game should be IMO - a casual puzzler should never frustrate the player with arbitrary difficulty spikes, it should be the mental equivalent to a light morning jog - only enough exercise to get the blood pumping, and the brain slightly warm. In what I've played of Tidalis, the only place I was continually having difficulty was the "get 7500 pints in 4 minutes" stage, and that's purely because it was pure RNG luck-based ♥♥♥♥♥♥oel.

That's the main criticism I have of the game - there's an element of randomness that's slightly unwelcome in a casual environment, though not the same sort that plagues "pay-to-win" crap like Candy Crush Saga, thank goodness. The other gripe I have with the game is the bizarre cutscenes, which are needlessly distracting and try-hard unfunny to boot. but I don't want to sound too harsh on the game - it's a great little time-waster, especially for 79p during a Steam Sale, or as part of an indie bundle (or for free from a Steam friend, thanks Broodje Gezond!). There's some nice, folksy piano/flute-led music there, too, if you're into that kind of thing.

Overall, yeah, I'd recommend it - if you can get it for cheap or free. It's not really worth £4.

A little strange at first, this puzzle game is a lot of fun. It includes an unlockable Zen mode for when you want to relax, and has a lot of different puzzle formats (timed, colour restrictions, and online co-op as well).

I've spent an hour on it without realising it, and I want to return to it as soon as possible. Personally, I can't ask any more of a game. The gameplay is also smooth, and there are no glitches/crashes/bugs in my experience. In addition, the storymode has me intrigued: I want to know more about the characters presented, which is rare in a puzzler. Even some RPGs can't manage that kind of interest. It also has a pleasant sense of humour.

Thumbs up all the way, you won't be sorry playing this puzzle game.

Very relaxing - until the challenge level ramps up. Then it gets something else entirely.
Don't be fooled! This game is a hardcore puzzler at heart despite its cute appearance.

The streams mechanic is fairly unique and makes for interesting puzzles, both of the twitchy and the thoughtful kind.
Definitely a game I plan to go back to.

Also it's a steal. So if you have some interest in puzzle games, do yourself a favor and give this gem a shot (there is a demo). You might be pleasantly surprised.

Also: Very good soundtrack!

It's Arcen Games' vastly under-rated puzzler. Cross-platform, reasonably priced, challenging, a horse and cart load of game modes, cathartic -- what more do you want?

Tidalis is a very cute and highly addictive casual puzzle game with a unique take on a well-known formula. The cutscenes and music are probably a matter of taste (personally, I liked the music but skipped through most of the story), but if you want to just sit down and relax, they create a comfortable and immersive atmosphere. The tutorial does a great job at introducing the game mechanics and there is a huge variety of different game modes. You can even create your own puzzles or play community-created ones. Last but not least, it has full Linux/SteamOS support. If you like games like Tetris Attack or Bejeweled, this is certainly for you.

In campaign mode, however, there is one major issue that you should be aware of: More than other puzzle games I've played, victory is often a matter of mere luck. In some stages the victory conditions are impossible to plan ahead for; on many occasions I had to restart a level several times because the blocks on the board didn't leave any sensible moving options. While in Bejeweled the board is cleared when you're out of moves, this does not happen here. On one occasion, for example, you're supposed to create large combos but at the same time are not allowed to move the majority of blocks. If they're not in a useful position by chance, there's simply nothing you can do, which can be extremely annoying.

If you believe that you can cope with this problem, I recommend this game to you.

An interesting casual puzzle game. A little like Tetris but much deeper. Its basic rule is to eliminate 3 blocks of the same colors. The difference is that the block is directional. Player have to adjust the direction of every block to chain the stream through as more blocks as possible. When a set of blocks is eliminated, one or more new streams appear to connect more blocks of different colors. The more sets of blocks are eliminated continuously, the more the combos are. This mechanics makes this game deep, complicated and engrossing. This game uses many different conditions to limit player's move, thus making it much more challenging. Finally, the background music is beautiful. Recommend if you just wanna relax peacefully.
