There's a lot to be said about Risen 2: Dark Waters. It's not a bad game per se; it has a very large following in Europe which proves that the game appeals to an audience. However, there are certain things which deviate it from the norm of RPGs that the rest of the world is used to. From unconventional gameplay mechanics to a muddy plot, Risen 2: Dark Waters is one that rests at the bottom of the sea.
Some good points:
+Graphics are really good, especially the lighting which makes the world pop out a little. However, there are certain graphical hitches like shadows glitching out. Fortunately there is a fix for that but I haven't tried it myself.
The bad points:
-Voice acting in this game is bad, especially the protagonist's. The delivery of lines are so lifeless that the screams sounds so bad , the surprised sounds so bored, and the joy sounds so sad. The only good voice acting is Steelbeard the pirate's since he really nails the ruff and gruff of an old and experienced man.
-The protagonist, antagonist, along with all the NPCs are some of the most lifeless characters that you'll ever see in a videogame. The protagonist has little to no backstory, the NPCs serves their purpose as lifeless mannequins, and the main antagonist is so laughable. The NPCs dialogue shows that they are not aware or concerned of the impending doom that is about to befall them. Once again, the saving grace is Steelbeard whose personality and quirkness is the only thing that is alive in this game.
-The animations are so stiff that they move more like robots than humans, which adds that lifeless touch to the already lifeless game.
-The plot is very straightforward. It's not bad but the lack of a fleshed-out backstory and lifeless characters make it sound so boring.
-Side quests are all fetch quests.
-Gameplay is a kind of so-so for me. On one hand, it is good because it features a lot of traditional RPG elements and there are a lot of skills to upgrade and learn which gives you your own character that stands out from the rest. On the other, it tells me that the gameplay is bland and gimmicky in some situations like some enemies' animation and attack speed being faster than yours, giving you no time to attack at all. The experience you'll have when playing this game will vary from being very good to really, really bad.
-The ending doesn't have a satisfying feel to it.
This pirate-themed RPG is definitely one of the lowest in it's genre. Maybe the devs just tried being innovative, maybe not. Whatever the reason, the end result ultimately falls flat on it's execution.
