Info over het spel

Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror.

With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.

A great but flawed game. The game starts very slow and combat feels a bit underwhelming, but if you stick out the first few hours, the game just climbs in fun factor and epicness. By the time you get a musket, you are in heaven, blasting monsters in a hail of black gunpowder smoke.

Overall, I liked this game, and half way through, loved it. It is one of those games that grows on you.

Its fun, whoever liked the first part or the Gothic series will enjoy this game.
Undeniable it has some edges, e.g parts of the combat system or the overall character animations but thats probably because of a low budget, but beneath that lies a really good RPG with nice graphics and a nice realization of the pirate scenario.

Whereas the mainstory is kinda boring, there is like a bad god and you spend the game preparing to kill that god. I don't want to spoil too much but the ending is pretty obvious after a while, so not really interesting.
Same goes for most characters, while some of them are at least good written, they are boring as hell and simple chliches, so everyone who is in search for a game with deep lore and interesting characters won't be satisfied with this game.

The fighting system is kind of fun, at least against humanoid enemies, against animals its much more simple but less fair. While you can counterattack humans there is no possibillity to do so against animals, you can not even block incoming attacks of some animals. One tip: don't use the musket that much, that makes the game even easier than it already is, at least in the latter parts. Either way, after about 20 hours you should play the game on hard, many enemies stay the same while you become undoubtedly better.

The skill system is a fairly simple one, you get XP for every kill/quest you do, which you can then spend on one of 5 traits which are: Blades, toughness, firearms, cunning and voodoo.
The money you gain you either spend on improving your skills at special trainers or in gear like clothes, swords or pistols.

The graphics are sometimes really gorgeous, the design also. Even after 30 hours of gameplay the jungles or beaches you visit won't be boring at all. But still, the worst part of the game is part of the graphics though: the character animations, those are so unbelievable bad you should probably laugh at them rather then criticizing them.

And for everyone with a fairly good computer, you should check out the mod "AntiWarp", it removes that weird warping of the plants, it's really easy to install as well.

Very fun involved game. The combat is tedious but realistic. Each monster has a different way of defeating him other than just mashing the attack button but until you unlock more abilities, they are very hard, almost too hard. Lots of interesting things to do but they don't hold you hand in figuring it out, most of the time you are on your own.

Risen 2 is a game which was unfairly dismissed by many. There are many reasons to account for this. One of the principal factors is the fact that it was released soon after the genre defining title, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Many people had preconstructed expectancies going into Risen 2, such as an open world format with huge worlds and places to explore. Risen is none of that. It is a fairly linear RPG. This is by no means a bad thing. There were times, believe it or not, where RPGs were completely story driven and linear, the likes of Final Fantasy 7. Many have forgotten this, or are too young, or too casual to have played a real RPG in their life times, and have only experienced Skyrim. But here is the truth. Skyrim has no balance whatsoever due to its open world nature, and the story is garbage. Risen II is better in both of these categories, though not perfect. If I can be critical on one point it is that the game has an inverted difficulty curb. The game starts quite hard for the first 10 hours, then is completely easy. It's very unusual to say the least. Overall though, it is a solid game, deserving more attention.

As a big fan of the original game, Risen, this game was a large disappointment. It lingers far away from what made Risen good, and tries to do something different, which I can respect, but it just doesn't work. The game is incredibly unforgiving at early levels and the overall combat system feels lacking and unfinished. Graphically, it is a large improvement over the original, however that's all. It pales in comparison to the original in terms of gameplay. Just get the original and get the full Risen experience.
