About This Game

Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror.

With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.

7/10 - Much worse game than Risen 1, combat is for no reason worse and the whole game feel less polished, like almost low-budget title. The pirate theme is new and somehow welcomed change, Patty is funny and story isnt bad either. Shame the Gothic feel from Risen 1 definitely died with this game.

The controls can get frustrating at times but more often then not you don't even notice. Not for casuals who want everything handed to them; you actually have to manage your gold instead of being able to buy out every store you come across and when you get new equipment it actually means something instead of a constant stream of over powered disposable weapons. It is a good old school game with a great story and a decent sense of humor The gnome you can get on your crew is hilarious . The combat system was dumbed down from the original but what do you expect when they make a game with consoles in mind. Over all give this game a chance and you wont regret it.

The story is fine, although I didn't play the first one. It was sometimes frustrating because it was slow at loading and had to save too many times while fighting, and also the game ran slow on my computer. But the gameplay was good, the story wasn't exactly short and upgrading skills took time. But after the final fight, you can't do anything, so if you missed some missions you have to load your last savefile before going to the Water Temple . But it's overall a nice game. 7/10

There's a lot to be said about Risen 2: Dark Waters. It's not a bad game per se; it has a very large following in Europe which proves that the game appeals to an audience. However, there are certain things which deviate it from the norm of RPGs that the rest of the world is used to. From unconventional gameplay mechanics to a muddy plot, Risen 2: Dark Waters is one that rests at the bottom of the sea.

Some good points:
+Graphics are really good, especially the lighting which makes the world pop out a little. However, there are certain graphical hitches like shadows glitching out. Fortunately there is a fix for that but I haven't tried it myself.

The bad points:
-Voice acting in this game is bad, especially the protagonist's. The delivery of lines are so lifeless that the screams sounds so bad , the surprised sounds so bored, and the joy sounds so sad. The only good voice acting is Steelbeard the pirate's since he really nails the ruff and gruff of an old and experienced man.
-The protagonist, antagonist, along with all the NPCs are some of the most lifeless characters that you'll ever see in a videogame. The protagonist has little to no backstory, the NPCs serves their purpose as lifeless mannequins, and the main antagonist is so laughable. The NPCs dialogue shows that they are not aware or concerned of the impending doom that is about to befall them. Once again, the saving grace is Steelbeard whose personality and quirkness is the only thing that is alive in this game.
-The animations are so stiff that they move more like robots than humans, which adds that lifeless touch to the already lifeless game.
-The plot is very straightforward. It's not bad but the lack of a fleshed-out backstory and lifeless characters make it sound so boring.
-Side quests are all fetch quests.
-Gameplay is a kind of so-so for me. On one hand, it is good because it features a lot of traditional RPG elements and there are a lot of skills to upgrade and learn which gives you your own character that stands out from the rest. On the other, it tells me that the gameplay is bland and gimmicky in some situations like some enemies' animation and attack speed being faster than yours, giving you no time to attack at all. The experience you'll have when playing this game will vary from being very good to really, really bad.
-The ending doesn't have a satisfying feel to it.

This pirate-themed RPG is definitely one of the lowest in it's genre. Maybe the devs just tried being innovative, maybe not. Whatever the reason, the end result ultimately falls flat on it's execution.

I tried to stick with this game but I really just can't. Risen 2 had a lot of potential with the pirate theme but ended up tripping all over itself trying to tie everything in together. the controls are the biggest issue here. They're the worst RPG controls I've ever experienced. Your character moves as if he is locked on a grid and he reacts poorly to the keys most of the time (maybe its just me, I can be wrong here). The combat was disappointing, it had the premise of being a tactical swordplay type of game but ultimately timing is pointless when the enemies have unblockable attacks and are faster than you. What fun is an RPG game if you don't look forward to fighting? That means a good chunk of the game is already unenjoyable and lost due to this poorly designed system. Levelling up is a chore, thousands of gold and glory are required and you're barely rewarded for taking the difficult quests. The characters are flat along with the disappointing story. the loot is barely worth the time with the lack of variety. The graphics are quite outdated and tax low end computers badly despite the quality of the graphics (my low end machine barely gets 30fps with the bad graphics). The writing isn't that good as well, the humor can be funny but most of the time the jokes are shallow. The voice acting isn't exactly good either. Aside from the main characters the npcs sure sound half baked when they talk.

I fear that the Risen franchise may be in too deep to redeem itself with failure after failure. 5/10. The game is painfully average and doesn't give any sense of accomplishment with its quests.

Worst game I've ever played, and you might think "Well, yo've only played for a bit", a BIT, is all you need. The combat mechanics are horrible, the story doesn't make sense, and they expect you to pay to get regular skills e.g sneaking, pickpocketing, firing an arrow. Buying Elderscrolls Online has more do then this piece of trash.

Have you ever wanted to be a rootin'-tootin' PIRATE?! Yeah, well that's this game. The swordplay is decent and the story is passable, but those boats...

This is not a review. I never completed the game. I did complete and enjoy the first Risen.

Risen 2 is moderately fun, for a while. Extremely dumbed down compared to the first Risen, a lot of the mechanics and depth of the first game don't seem to exist in this one. The combat remained nearly the same in the 14 hours I've apparently spent on this game and barely amounted to more than holding down the left mouse button.

With very little in terms of direction, but at the same time not enough open world elements to let you explore on your own, I am very glad that I bought this on sale. I only have a small amount of time on it, but already I can tell I will need a game pad for it. Maybe once I play with a 360 controller it will be better, but so far it just seems like a clunky and under directed mess.
