About This Game

Set several years after the end of Risen, raging titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. His quest begins with rumors that the pirates who frequent the southern islands are the only ones who know a way to get rid of the creatures once and for all and end their reign of terror.

With an all-new pirate-based theme, Risen 2: Dark Waters aims to combine the most loved classic RPG gameplay mechanics of the original Risen with a fresh theme and setting on a huge variety of themed island locales. A third-person role-playing game set in a dark and gritty universe, Risen 2: Dark Waters maintains the most immersive features of the original Risen, with multiple approaches to every challenge allowing players to shape the game world based on their own decisions. These choices will serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character. Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.

I hated this game. Going straight from Risen 1 into this.....there is no comparison. I would have just loved a continuation of the story from 1 into 2, but that is not what happened.

They did make the graphics better, but that is the only pro.

Combat and skills are so jarring from 1 to 2 it is best to think of them as 2 separate games. At first it seems like a cash grab and shoddily done because they changed so many of the main aspects.

Story was decent. Nice playtime for how cheap I got it. Meh.

i have seen many reviews for this game, both positive and negative.
as someone whose played most rpg games available i can fairly say this is one of the most engaging action rpg games you can play.
most comments i see are ''combat is difficult and unbalanced'' or ''bad narrative''.
well those in the former category are children or casual gamers.
(sure beasts or wild animals are harder and like most gothic/risen games cant be blocked, because thats realistic)
different characyters or mobs require different tactics thats part of the fun.
and for the later.
like all nordic/ piranah bytes games they have a rich story and lore wich starts from risen 1 and follows through to risen 3.
i recomend this game highly if your like myself.
as in action rpg fan, whome enjoys the likes of witcher, gothic, etc.
I should also say that unlike risen 1 when you draw your sword your stance changes.
this is one reason why people diont like it. i however love that fact that walking and fighting mechanics are very slightly differnt its more emersive.
enjoy!

This is what i was expecting from Piranha Bytes. Must play title ( not for everyone )

27 hours of solid gameplay
37 hours to get 100% achievements ( had to use console because i didnt want to waste few hours )

9,9/10 because there could be better scripting and improved boss fights ( mini boss Granne Gozzo > Mara )

30 GB of saves ( 6,2 MB per save)

Risen 1 was good, not perfect, but good. This might be the first game when PB ( the developers) goes away from the gothic formula. This game has new mechanics which more or less work...

But they delete elements from the first game like shield blocking against animals, magic(replaced by voodoo spells), archery replaced by some guns which are alright (I quess)

-Voodoo spells are mostly use to make some story missions a lot easier, sometimes in combat but they aren't game changing, kinda a wasted effort but the story bits were cool.

-Hand guns are used like in MMORPGs , click on something and you have a chance to crit/miss. I don't have a big experience with muskets.

-Story-wise the plot from the first game is kinda ♥♥♥♥ed and no one basically gave a damn, there is a wiki page with the backstory from the developers but besides that this game tolds a whole different story. BUT I kinda liked this story more, the dialogues are funnier.

-Combat is ...bad. It's more of the *click click click* thing than the *swing right block swing left advance dodge*. Sometimes you lose without even knowing what you did wrong. There is a block button but it's mediocre at best.

Overall while not a very good I think is something worth your time : especially if you get the chance to get the whole risen pack with like 15$ like I did.

6/10

With an expanded setting, a fresh story and characters as well as an all-new technical foundation, Risen 2 expands on the success of this popular RPG franchise. Set several years after the end of Risen, the game drops players into a cataclysmic world where raging titans have devastated the planet and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Subsequently, monstrous creatures have risen from the watery depths of the sea and their attacks have brought all seafaring to a grinding halt. The hero, now a member of the Inquisition, is sent out to find out how to stop the chaos caused by these creatures from the deep. Takes patience and working with the game mechanics not against them, a lot of people that is their biggest complaint. Has had its ups and downs but I love this series and the gameplay, the world, the lore, hope they keep making these for years to come.

Owner of Risen 1-3 w/ expansions.

I'm sorry PB but I cant understand the need for the change of theme from Risen 1 to this game. I just dont feel that the Pirate theme was a good idea and as someone who loved Risen 1 I felt really letdown by this sudden change which I didnt feel was either wanted or required. Secondly I really dont like combat in this game and feel this was the area from the original they should have been focussing on improving rather than the theme, combat just feels clunky and the progression system means in the early game you will suffer but by late game its all a bit to easy. Suffice to say I didnt enjoy fighting which proves to be a significant issue. I also really didnt like how the magic is completely replaced by Voo Doo which doesnt feel like its properly balanced. Lastly I did notice some performance issues whilst playing this game.

IMO Risen 2 and 3 are very average offerings and I would instead recommend playing the original Risen unless you really have a thing for cheesy pirates.

Risen2: Dark Waters is an open world RPG game based around the theme of pirates. Its the sequeal to the original Risen game developed by Piranha Bytes. Risen 2 was released in early 2012 on the PC and then later released on consoles. Even today, the game is still popular among PC gamers with at least one million people owning the game on Steam alone.

This is an action RPG where you play in a third-person perspective to explore the world. You complete quests and customize your characters abilities and equipment through leveling up and assigning glory points. This takes RPG games back to their routes, allowing you to customize your character exactly how you want to play with the amount of abilities and talents on display. The combat much like Risen 1 is not exactly a strong point; it seems clunky at times, and you will often find your self dying through no fault of your own other than the strange combat system. You have two weapon slots, a melee weapon and a range weapon. You aren't able to use the range weapon unless you are within melee range of an enemy oddly yet your enemies have almost laser guided aim against you with their spears and guns.

A nice little change I found was the infinite amount of inventory space you have, some will think this removes some of the challenge of the game, but for me I have always found a limited inventory space to be a chore which is not always needed. Obviously this means that currency is never a problem once you reach the latter stages of the game since you are able to just sell everything though.

The graphics in Risen 2 are certainly an improvement on Risen 1, however there are a few glaring problems I found. The main one being the terrain pop-in throughout the open world. As you are roaming around the jungle, all of a sudden you will quite clearly notice trees and plants suddenly expanding before your very eyes. It's clear this is done to try and reduce the strain on systems for loading the world, but it is done in such an obvious way that sometimes it can ruin the immersion. I also found the game to be very very dark. The day/night circle while adds to the realism, the game is sometimes virtually unplayable in the night hours due to how dark it is. I found myself actually having to turn up the brightness settings at times to keep playing.

While the game is completely voice acted, it does have some very bad acting in it; some of the lines which are said are very out of place and just don't fit right. That being said; there are some absolute classics such as "...off, before I put a banana on your c*ck and call for the gorilla" being easily the best line I have heard in a video game.

Risen 2 is a hard game; as you begin your adventure you will die a lot of times due to being under geared and under trained and having no money. A lot of the early quests require you to have certain training in sneaking and lock picking, which all require gold to learn, so the game starts out very slowly. I would say the first three hours are the hardest part of the game due to the speed in which you are able to carry out even the smallest side quests.

This is a well designed open world game. The world is full of life and plenty of items, weapons, buildings and much more to find. You are able to go mining, or skinning animals as well, which reminded me a lot of the MMO type games.

Risen 2 has so much content to offer, so many side quests, worlds to explore, everything. I have put almost fifty five hours into this game, doing all of the side quests, a good amount of grinding and of course the main story. It's very rare these days to find a game this good that gives you that amount of gameplay.

I had a few little technical issues which were random frame drops in certain areas, as well as long loading times but nothing that can't be overpowered by either using a SSD or a DIMM drive.

Tom's Score Card
1) Stay away
2) Only recommended when on sale
3) Recommended
4) Highly recommended
5) This is a must play
