An update has been released!

This update focuses on fixing bugs and improving performance as well as adding some new features for modders.

As usual, servers will need to be updated.
The update will be automatically downloaded when you restart your game.

Thanks to everybody who helped with testing the update and reported bugs/problems.

You can find full changelist here.

April Update Is Imminent

The next update for Garry's Mod will be coming later this month.

We ask you, players and modders alike, to help us test this update so it won't be as problematic as the first March update.

We have added a new pre-release branch that contains all the changes that will be included into the next update.

You can see the full changelist for the next update as well as how to join or leave the pre-release branch here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/changelist/prerelease/

We urge you to spend around 15 minutes in single player, testing your addons and whatnot, and report any issues you find that did not happen before here:
https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues/
Or at least in the comments of this announcement.

If you own a Garry's Mod server, we highly recommend you test your server on the pre-release branch. Information about using experimental branches on dedicated servers can be found here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server

The Dev branch is not going anywhere and contains latest changes that may not be included in the April update, but will be included in future updates.

“It brings back the silly glee of unbridled experimentation, intuitive learning and playful social interactions that most of us haven't experienced since childhood. For that, it's essential.”

About This Game

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Beyond the Sandbox

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

It has been 4,000 hours
My wife took the kids
Got fired from my job
Have no one that loves me
Not enough money to buy food
Slowly goes into a deep depression

On the bright side, I can pretend that the ragdolls is my wife and children, and I can eat endless food thanks to addons.

8/8 - Always there

In all of my grand stupor, I realized I have continually overlooked something without so much as a passing notice: I have never once added this game to any of my favorite games lists. I'm honestly not sure why I haven't; As of the date of this review, I've put in over one-thousand hours on this account, and over four times as much on my old account (that account weighs in at roughly 4500 hours thusfar). Maybe it's the fact that, for whatever reason, I've never really thought of it as a game in its own right. I put countless hours into it in Garry's Mod 9 when it truly still was a modification and purchased Garry's Mod on release on my old account. I've met so many people through this "game"; I could go so far as to say my life would be incredibly different if it wasn't for my countless hours in this. I've drifted from community to community, spending literal years of my life among different cultures in what amounts to an open book full of tools for a game I've barely clocked even a few hundred hours in at most. My friends, almost all of them, can be attributed, directly or indirectly, to me playing this "game". My current and past relationships all were a result from me meeting people or spending time in communities that I had come across while playing this "game". My past insecurities, my current strengths, and my place in life can almost all have their roots traced back to me browsing the internet and finding the comic "Concerned" and picking up the modification used to make that comic.

So, what prevents me from calling this a "game"? Why is it that, for all of what this creation has offered me, can I still not think of this as a "game"? Perhaps it is the fact that it truly was never really a game to me. It was a blank slate; it was a whiteboard on which I myself and many others could express themselves creatively and make whatever they could dream of, engine limits notwithstanding. This, this "game", this modification, this thing has been such a life-altering experience for me. While this may sound ridiculous and childish for most people, I can't express how much gratitude I have for this stupid little free-turned-$10 mod to exist. It gave me better insight into how some things are constructed, it encouraged me to learn how to code and how to script, it started me on the road to server management and website administration, and most of all, it helped fill the void for the years I spent as a teenager upset with my life and brought me some of the closest friends I will ever have. I love this mod, I love this "game", and I love this stupid simple little broken mess that I still find myself playing for countless hours day after day.

In hindsight, I feel as if I was right about never calling it a game and never listing it on my favorite games list, because for the longest time, it was not a game to me; it was the only thing that kept me going.

You know.. I would LOVE to review this game... But im probably too busy playing it so here's a recipe for chocolate chip cookies instead.

Ingredients:
1 cup of butter
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
3 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
2 teaspoons of hot water
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 cups of chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and nuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans.
3. Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

Additional Notes:
*Prep Time - 20 minutes
*Cook Time - 10 minutes
*Ready in 1 hour!

Tip:
Use alluminum foil and cooling oil so the cookies won't stick! Happy eating!! :))

Garry's Mod was a mistake. -Garry Newman

On a serious note, there's almost nothing really fun you can do in an admin's jurisdiction of a server, so I just play on a private one with my friends when possible. The amount of poorly made content on this game is abysmal, from the same but retextured "roleplay" gamemodes to the increasingly restricted sandbox servers, what some people define as fun seems mind boggingly boring to many users.95% of the admins you'll find yourself playing with are unsociable and impossible to negotiate with. Of the many gamemodes available, the only ones that actually provide something consistently fun are GMTower and some of the few servers run by actual humans capable of empathy.

I used to play and was a staff on an obscure but fun gamemode called EconRP. The concept was that you wouldn't recieve money out of thin air (most DarkRP servers) and that there's an actual economy and money has to flow for things to work. There were unique jobs and even a Trello page for users to submit ideas for the developer, some staff and the community to decide on. Only a hefty percentage of the many users who joined actually bothered to try to learn a bit about the jobs and play on the server. 6/7 of the staff (including me) were really fun to play with and many of the users felt alien to the admins who actually tried to resolve things logically and others felt quite happy with it. But one of the staff was an absolute brute to some users and seemed interchangable with the typical big shot authoritarian admins.

In the end though, the server didn't get enough money from donations to stay up and was eventually shut down. The people behind EconRP were really fun to play with and quite optimistic, and it's a shame such a good idea didn't prosper for more than a few months while the constant mess of horribly managed servers and gamemodes continued it's stream into the pond of community made creations that is Garry's Mod. There are quite a few good gamemodes that I haven't mentioned here, and some people might be happy with servers the way they are right now. That's fine, but for those who are on the other side of the coin, we can only hope that quality prospers in the face of the undying horror that is the many gamemodes and servers brought by the indifferent owners and developers of what makes this game.

What I want the readers of this review to take from it is that, TL;DR there are few servers worth playing on, depending on the user. Most may or may not be for you. Zuthar13 is a good channel to check out if you want some video examples of the ridiculous servers and situations he just happens to find himself in. Would I recommend this game? Yes and no. That's not really an option though, is it? So here's the verdict - if you can find your way around the issues above, or if you're in mostly for the singleplayer, this game is for you. However, if you think that because the majority of the community made content is abysmal and the community is something you don't want to be a part of, you can give it a pass. The game is just 10$ after all, and was on sale when I got it. I'm happy with it just for the occasional singleplayer sandbox or private game with my friends every once in a while, sometimes GMTower or I'll go searching for servers that might have something different in store for me. The game really is fun once you've dug through the dirt and find the gold behind it.
