July Update Is Imminent

The next update for Garry's Mod will be coming next month.

Pre-release Steam branch
The pre-release Steam Beta branch for Garry's Mod has been updated and contains all the changes that will be included into the next update.

You can see the full change list for the next update as well as how to join or leave the pre-release branch here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/changelist/prerelease/

The next update, while not having a usual massive amount of changes, comes with two very big features:
  • Steam Peer-To-Peer - Allows people to play with each other without having to mess around with your router, modem or firewalls, similarly to how CS:GO does it. This is best suited to play with a few of your friends and is not meant for hosting public servers. Simply start a mutliplayer game from your main menu and invite your friends through the Steam Friend's List.
  • Queued(Multicore) Rendering - This will boost your in-game performance in most cases up to double the frame rate. Currently the option is hidden and you will have to enable it manually every time in order to use it, this is in case there are still problems with it. Instructions on how to enable it are below

To enable Queued(Multicore) Rendering, enter the following console commands into your console before entering a game.
gmod_mcore_test 1
mat_queue_mode -1
cl_threaded_bone_setup 1

The pre-release beta branch is compatible with all servers in the game, so you will be able to play on servers and test the game at the same time!

Help us test it!
We ask you, players and modders alike, to help us test this update so that there will be as few problems as possible.

We urge you to spend around 15 minutes in single player, testing your addons and whatnot, and report any issues you find that did not happen before here:
https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues/
Or at least in the comments of this announcement.

If you own a Garry's Mod server, we highly recommend you test your server on the pre-release branch. Information about using experimental branches on dedicated servers can be found here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server

April 2016 Update

An update has been released!

This update focuses on fixing bugs and improving performance as well as adding some new features for modders.

As usual, servers will need to be updated.
The update will be automatically downloaded when you restart your game.

Thanks to everybody who helped with testing the update and reported bugs/problems.

You can find full changelist here.

Don't panic if when you join you will get "Server is running an older version of the game" - let the server update to the latest version of the game first. Just wait a few hours at most.

“It brings back the silly glee of unbridled experimentation, intuitive learning and playful social interactions that most of us haven't experienced since childhood. For that, it's essential.”

About This Game

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Beyond the Sandbox

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

So I'm just going to try and keep this review quite short but anyway

Gary's mod is a game that is fun for lots of different people because there is so many modes that play very differently to each other. My favourite mode (ttt) is an extremely social mode and I have met many new friends on it (a few I would consider some of my best friends!)but if you're not into a mode like ttt then don't worry because modes like prop hunt are very fun to play aswell!

In my opinion this game is an amazing value for the price and I would easily pay £25 for it due to the fact that it never seems to get boring (take it from someone that has almost 800 in game hours).

So overall you should get this game because of its great price, replay ability , social ness and fun gameplay.

Btw I'm only 13 so if this review was slightly bad then that may be the reason

My god, this game is legendary. There are so many gamemodes, mods, and fun times to have. Grab this game, a couple friends, and a copy of counter strike source (essential for a lot of maps and props) and you'll have tons of fun!

It has been 4,000 hours
My wife took the kids
Got fired from my job
Have no one that loves me
Not enough money to buy food
Slowly goes into a deep depression

On the bright side, I can pretend that the ragdolls is my wife and children, and I can eat endless food thanks to addons.

8/8 - Always there

In all of my grand stupor, I realized I have continually overlooked something without so much as a passing notice: I have never once added this game to any of my favorite games lists. I'm honestly not sure why I haven't; As of the date of this review, I've put in over one-thousand hours on this account, and over four times as much on my old account (that account weighs in at roughly 4500 hours thusfar). Maybe it's the fact that, for whatever reason, I've never really thought of it as a game in its own right. I put countless hours into it in Garry's Mod 9 when it truly still was a modification and purchased Garry's Mod on release on my old account. I've met so many people through this "game"; I could go so far as to say my life would be incredibly different if it wasn't for my countless hours in this. I've drifted from community to community, spending literal years of my life among different cultures in what amounts to an open book full of tools for a game I've barely clocked even a few hundred hours in at most. My friends, almost all of them, can be attributed, directly or indirectly, to me playing this "game". My current and past relationships all were a result from me meeting people or spending time in communities that I had come across while playing this "game". My past insecurities, my current strengths, and my place in life can almost all have their roots traced back to me browsing the internet and finding the comic "Concerned" and picking up the modification used to make that comic.

So, what prevents me from calling this a "game"? Why is it that, for all of what this creation has offered me, can I still not think of this as a "game"? Perhaps it is the fact that it truly was never really a game to me. It was a blank slate; it was a whiteboard on which I myself and many others could express themselves creatively and make whatever they could dream of, engine limits notwithstanding. This, this "game", this modification, this thing has been such a life-altering experience for me. While this may sound ridiculous and childish for most people, I can't express how much gratitude I have for this stupid little free-turned-$10 mod to exist. It gave me better insight into how some things are constructed, it encouraged me to learn how to code and how to script, it started me on the road to server management and website administration, and most of all, it helped fill the void for the years I spent as a teenager upset with my life and brought me some of the closest friends I will ever have. I love this mod, I love this "game", and I love this stupid simple little broken mess that I still find myself playing for countless hours day after day.

In hindsight, I feel as if I was right about never calling it a game and never listing it on my favorite games list, because for the longest time, it was not a game to me; it was the only thing that kept me going.
