An update has been released!

This update focuses on fixing bugs and improving performance as well as adding some new features for modders.

As usual, servers will need to be updated.
The update will be automatically downloaded when you restart your game.

Thanks to everybody who helped with testing the update and reported bugs/problems.

You can find full changelist here.

April Update Is Imminent

The next update for Garry's Mod will be coming later this month.

We ask you, players and modders alike, to help us test this update so it won't be as problematic as the first March update.

We have added a new pre-release branch that contains all the changes that will be included into the next update.

You can see the full changelist for the next update as well as how to join or leave the pre-release branch here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/changelist/prerelease/

We urge you to spend around 15 minutes in single player, testing your addons and whatnot, and report any issues you find that did not happen before here:
https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues/
Or at least in the comments of this announcement.

If you own a Garry's Mod server, we highly recommend you test your server on the pre-release branch. Information about using experimental branches on dedicated servers can be found here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server

The Dev branch is not going anywhere and contains latest changes that may not be included in the April update, but will be included in future updates.

“It brings back the silly glee of unbridled experimentation, intuitive learning and playful social interactions that most of us haven't experienced since childhood. For that, it's essential.”

About This Game

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Beyond the Sandbox

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

First of all, if you're a fanboy of Garry's mod remember this is my personal opinion about this game not yours, you may have a different one. Well, I actually think this game isn't for everyone, because I have some friends who spent a lot of hours playing this sandbox so thanks to them I decided to get it, to be honest, I expected something different, because my friends used to tell me about all the things you can do here, I was quite happy when I finally got it, so I started playing really excited but with time I started feeling quite disappointment, I didn't find this game funny AT ALL, on the other hand you may be wondering why I said this isn't a game for everyone, I said it because I have some friends who think the same about this. To conclude, I have to say I wouldn't recommend this game.

Garry's Mod was a mistake. -Garry Newman

On a serious note, there's almost nothing really fun you can do in an admin's jurisdiction of a server, so I just play on a private one with my friends when possible. The amount of poorly made content on this game is abysmal, from the same but retextured "roleplay" gamemodes to the increasingly restricted sandbox servers, what some people define as fun seems mind boggingly boring to many users.95% of the admins you'll find yourself playing with are unsociable and impossible to negotiate with. Of the many gamemodes available, the only ones that actually provide something consistently fun are GMTower and some of the few servers run by actual humans capable of empathy.

I used to play and was a staff on an obscure but fun gamemode called EconRP. The concept was that you wouldn't recieve money out of thin air (most DarkRP servers) and that there's an actual economy and money has to flow for things to work. There were unique jobs and even a Trello page for users to submit ideas for the developer, some staff and the community to decide on. Only a hefty percentage of the many users who joined actually bothered to try to learn a bit about the jobs and play on the server. 6/7 of the staff (including me) were really fun to play with and many of the users felt alien to the admins who actually tried to resolve things logically and others felt quite happy with it. But one of the staff was an absolute brute to some users and seemed interchangable with the typical big shot authoritarian admins.

In the end though, the server didn't get enough money from donations to stay up and was eventually shut down. The people behind EconRP were really fun to play with and quite optimistic, and it's a shame such a good idea didn't prosper for more than a few months while the constant mess of horribly managed servers and gamemodes continued it's stream into the pond of community made creations that is Garry's Mod. There are quite a few good gamemodes that I haven't mentioned here, and some people might be happy with servers the way they are right now. That's fine, but for those who are on the other side of the coin, we can only hope that quality prospers in the face of the undying horror that is the many gamemodes and servers brought by the indifferent owners and developers of what makes this game.

What I want the readers of this review to take from it is that, TL;DR there are few servers worth playing on, depending on the user. Most may or may not be for you. Zuthar13 is a good channel to check out if you want some video examples of the ridiculous servers and situations he just happens to find himself in. Would I recommend this game? Yes and no. That's not really an option though, is it? So here's the verdict - if you can find your way around the issues above, or if you're in mostly for the singleplayer, this game is for you. However, if you think that because the majority of the community made content is abysmal and the community is something you don't want to be a part of, you can give it a pass. The game is just 10$ after all, and was on sale when I got it. I'm happy with it just for the occasional singleplayer sandbox or private game with my friends every once in a while, sometimes GMTower or I'll go searching for servers that might have something different in store for me. The game really is fun once you've dug through the dirt and find the gold behind it.

No but on to point, Garry's Mod is fun, it really is, most of my thousands of hours have been spent with friends when we screwed around in sandbox, now I just use Gmod to make artworks, I can't really say much other about this game other then it's not for everyone, but hey, if you like sandbox games, why not buy Garry's Mod?

This is the game you literally cannot be bored of. At least I know I can't. Other games are good and all, and might have some good mechanics and maybe even a brilliantly crafted story. But Garry's Mod takes the cake in my opinion. Garry's Mod doesn't need any of that fancy stuff, because it already HAS it. You can literally do ANYTHING. From nuking your entire map, to taking in game selfies with your friends, Gmod is capable of anything. The countless mods, the countless maps and weapons and NPCS all make the game what it is. It is just such an incredible game. I know what you're thinking, "why is this guy going on and on about this sandbox game?" Well, my answer is, because I simply, truly, absolutely, love this game. It is the "do whatever the hell you want game", it is awesome.

So, if you have $10 on steam, don't get undertale, get Gmod :)

(yes I do realize the graphics aren't the best, but it's still great)

I'm going to recount my entire GMod experience onto this.

In the beginning of GMod, Gmod 12, I always played with this thing called the Toybox. We always used it, and it was basically the dupes and addons combined, where they downloaded while you played, and spawned them in.
Fast forward a little to where I played the first version of Extreme Football Throwdown, where we still used the legacy browser, and I'll just say it was a BLAST.
Fast forward to the GMod 13 update, they removed the Toybox. This meant that we had to start new, and clean. There was absolutely no mods on the workshop, and everyone played vanilla GMod. We still had fun, though.
Eventually, I was hooked onto HL2RP, a serious Roleplaying Gamemode.
Do. Not. Try it. It is addictive. I've played nothing but GMod for 2 years because of it, and my cousins that were new to steam saved me from it. Read below if you want to know my entire HL2RP Experience.
I had played this gamemode for quite a while, with no friends to have understood. Eventually, I found a server named something like Cracked Reality or something like that. I had made friends with the server creator named Kingo. Eventually, this guy named Horse had played on the server too, coding for Kingo and all that jazz. Kingo did not pay him, one day, and Horse had gotten so outraged, that he made his own RP server. I basically got stuck between the two, having to play with the two that are now enemies, even though Kingo had no beef with him. I was made the DvL of the CPs in HL2RP of Kingo's slightly populated server. This forced me to play more with kingo, as I had more of a responsibility. I made a crap load of friends and eventually each server I went to on HL2RP, someone knew me. Now, I had gone to Horse's server, who now named himself Jeremy. Jeremy had a friend named Chubbger, who I quickly became friends with. With the help of Chubbger, and my Cousins, I had left the HL2RP Insanity. Seeing that Jeremy was still in it, he repeatedly invited me to several spinoffs of HL2RP, such as Star Wars Nutscript RP, along with the CW counterparts. At last, the last thing he became, before he left me, and dissipeared from my friends list was, he started up a discord server, yeah? Well, he started one, which was in fact, warframe rp. If that wasn't low enough, he downgraded his steam name to be Rule 34 Warframe, and had warframe porn for his profile pic
In short, basically that gamemode is more addictive than krokodil, and only your friends can save you. GMod is a good game, take it in healthy doses, and hopefully you don't get addicted like I did. If your addicted, try getting someone into steam, by getting them a starter game like TF2 or CSGO. That'll force you into playing with them to keep them interested. GMod is dangerous, I'm lucky that most of my friends left HL2RP.

Thank you for taking the time to reading this review, have a good day.

What keeps this game alive is its user created content, limitless possibilites and an amazing variety of gamemodes and content. If the base game wasn't enough you should go check out the Workshop with millions of mods like props, weapons, models, vehicles etc. You name it!
This game treats you like a god (if you're the admin of course), and lets you play the game however you want it. You could go create a zombie apocalypse or even recreate a school shooting (but if you do, you're phycotic), heck you could even create a rocket that could go to space! But the skybox will block you anyway.

And that's only the singleplayer part.

The multiplayer part consist of a huge selection of gamemodes all spread to different servers for all over the world. Gamemodes could be sandbox, murder, sled racing, rp etc etc. The funniest gamemode being TTT (Trouble in Terrorist Town).
Though, it would feel alot more satisfying if the server list wasn't so lazy developed. Server list only updates once you start the game up and the legacy server finds all random gamemodes that you won't play.

Limitless possibilites and user friendly godlike status in both singleplayer and multiplayer (only when admin).
Hours and hours of content, still expanding by the help of Workshop and user created content.
