July 2016 Update

A new update has been released!

This update is optional, however it is strongly recommended that server owners install it.
Clients will automatically update via Steam when the game is restarted.

Peer-To-Peer Listen Servers
Servers that are created via the main-menu's "Start New Game" button can now be connected to via Steam's P2P networking. This means that - on most networks - friends are able to connect to each other's games without any special network configuration being required (e.g. port forwarding).

To use it, all you have to do is use your friends list to join/invite a friend!

Queued (Multi-Core) Rendering
This isn't finished yet, but queued rendering should be pretty robust now. Any changes in performance are entirely dependent on your hardware and the scene being rendered.

You can enable it by running a few commands when you launch the game (press Shift+Escape to open the console):
gmod_mcore_test 1
mat_queue_mode -1
cl_threaded_bone_setup 1

Other Changes
  • Added mat_requires_rt_alloc_first ConVar from upstream.
  • Lua console commands are now removed when disconnecting from a server/changing level.
  • Replicated Lua ConVars are now properly synched with the server.
  • Scripted weapons now function correctly when switching to a weapon with no ammo.
  • Clients will no longer be disconnected with the reason "CL_CopyExistingEntity: missing client entity".
  • Crouch-jumping will no longer cause the screen to flicker after a certain amount of server up-time.
  • Fixed rare crash that occurs when increasing the outgoing network buffer size for game-state snapshots.
  • Ropes no longer cause the game to not properly close on exit.
  • Fixed issue that could cause the "GetLuaTable != TABLE" crash to occur on level change.
  • file.Find() now sorts its results properly. The default behavior is unchanged.
  • HTTP() no longer leaks request references and won't crash if the Lua state is destroyed during a request.
  • Some security fixes.

You can find full changelist here.

July Update Is Imminent

The next update for Garry's Mod will be coming next month.

Pre-release Steam branch
The pre-release Steam Beta branch for Garry's Mod has been updated and contains all the changes that will be included into the next update.

You can see the full change list for the next update as well as how to join or leave the pre-release branch here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/changelist/prerelease/

The next update, while not having a usual massive amount of changes, comes with two very big features:
  • Steam Peer-To-Peer - Allows people to play with each other without having to mess around with your router, modem or firewalls, similarly to how CS:GO does it. This is best suited to play with a few of your friends and is not meant for hosting public servers. Simply start a mutliplayer game from your main menu and invite your friends through the Steam Friend's List.
  • Queued(Multicore) Rendering - This will boost your in-game performance in most cases up to double the frame rate. Currently the option is hidden and you will have to enable it manually every time in order to use it, this is in case there are still problems with it. Instructions on how to enable it are below

To enable Queued(Multicore) Rendering, enter the following console commands into your console before entering a game.
gmod_mcore_test 1
mat_queue_mode -1
cl_threaded_bone_setup 1

The pre-release beta branch is compatible with all servers in the game, so you will be able to play on servers and test the game at the same time!

Help us test it!
We ask you, players and modders alike, to help us test this update so that there will be as few problems as possible.

We urge you to spend around 15 minutes in single player, testing your addons and whatnot, and report any issues you find that did not happen before here:
https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues/
Or at least in the comments of this announcement.

If you own a Garry's Mod server, we highly recommend you test your server on the pre-release branch. Information about using experimental branches on dedicated servers can be found here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server

“It brings back the silly glee of unbridled experimentation, intuitive learning and playful social interactions that most of us haven't experienced since childhood. For that, it's essential.”

About This Game

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Beyond the Sandbox

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

This is soo fun! I strongly recommend this game to be played. Missing textures are very annoying though but this game is still fun nonetheless.

Good game.
You can have a gun that shoots rainbows, a rainbow that shoots guns, a gun that shoots rainbows that shoot guns...
Oh, and there's also the servers.
They're divided into a few parts:
*The roleplay servers.
*The sandbox servers.
*The hide-and-seek servers.
*Those other murder servers.
*Dead gamemodes with dead servers.
*Maybe other servers.
Here's a breakdown:

The roleplay servers are what they are, roleplays. My personal experience with them? Well, mostly I got mugged by random people who live on the server I was on. I didn't give them money and I got shot. And there's other ones, like Harry Potter. Of course, there were random freespellers, people who jump out of whatever area you're in and arrest you, and people who pull you into a dark forest and sell you. Oh, and also the micspam. Yeaaaahhhhhh.....

The sandbox servers are a bit different. You can fly, spawn props, fling props, and spawn in guns. Most of these servers are filled with unique species, such as the Propslammer and the Triggerfinger. Just build a base, and you'll be fine.

The murder servers, at least the one I joined, was basically composed of three classes: an innocent, innocent with gun, and innocent with knife. Oh, wait, he isn't innocent. He stabs people. But anyway, the murder usually wins.

The dead gamemodes are usually composed of MLP roleplays, copies of gamemodes, the 'base' gamemode, Hack vs Hack, tons of roleplays, and a few really weird gamemodes. Woot.

The hide and seek servers are basically prop hunt servers, where you turn into a mug and get shot at. Like roleplay servers, but without the guns and jazz.

Just make sure you don't get shot down by someone who's played for 5 minutes and you're fine. It's a great game for addons and multiplayer.

I received this product for free, but not from the company. I also did this for the badge, so...yep.

Back in 2012, game was awesome. You had the toy boxes and Garry's Mod addon site. All these nice addons without kids putting in weird ♥♥♥♥ in. The servers were cool and friendly, well most of them. Overall was a great game. The day Garry's Mod had a update, it was 13. The number which darkness followed, the gods have punished us with giving us curses each day the update was live. First curse was the giant horde of gremlins attacking the servers and workshops. Second Curse, everyone survived the first but the second. MADNESS, CHAOS, WE ALL ARE DOOMED. THE WORKSHOP IS GONE, END DAYS ARE HERE EVERYONE RUN. Third curse, THE SERVERS ARE BURNING OH GOD THE HUMANITY, Gremlins started attacking everyone and every server. Even the minges ran. GARRY WHY, WHY GARRY YOU DOOMED US ALL. Please mercy.

Summary, 8/10, the update ruined the game for me. Still good but not as fun.

1) You buy it.
2) You're confused.
3) You leave it in your Steam library for a few weeks.
4) You play on a server.
5) You become addicted.

Seriously, this game is a drug. I need help. Am I Marina Joyce? No. I think I'm having a mid-life crisis. Oh god. OH GOD. HEEEELP.

Great game as we all know.

Worth buying and goes on sale often if you need to save some money and don't mind waiting. I traded for a copy and was not disappointed. So many possibilities in this game so you can play it for hours on end and won't get bored.

I'm Rick Harrison, and this is my pawn shop. I work here with my old man and my son, Big Hoss. Everything in here has a story and a price. One thing I've learned after 21 years - you never know what is gonna come through that door.

I zapped undead Teletubbies with my Wiimote.
Yoshis saved the world from a wild Waluigi horde.
I trapped some armed soldiers inside a fenced area and placed oil barrels and bombs all around them and watched them commit suicide.
I roped myself to a speeding kart and didn't even get a scratch.
I knocked a TV over with my Crowbar while everyone was watching SM64 Bloopers.
I organised a party at a nice old wooden house... and then burned the entire place.
I threw my friends around the world with my physics gun.
I sacrificed thousands of Test NPC's to my dubstep cannon.

This game provides so many possibilities to crack up with laughter, even in single player but especially when playing with friends. So epic.
