April Update Is Imminent

The next update for Garry's Mod will be coming later this month.

We ask you, players and modders alike, to help us test this update so it won't be as problematic as the first March update.

We have added a new pre-release branch that contains all the changes that will be included into the next update.

You can see the full changelist for the next update as well as how to join or leave the pre-release branch here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/changelist/prerelease/

We urge you to spend around 15 minutes in single player, testing your addons and whatnot, and report any issues you find that did not happen before here:
https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues/
Or at least in the comments of this announcement.

If you own a Garry's Mod server, we highly recommend you test your server on the pre-release branch. Information about using experimental branches on dedicated servers can be found here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server

The Dev branch is not going anywhere and contains latest changes that may not be included in the April update, but will be included in future updates.

“It brings back the silly glee of unbridled experimentation, intuitive learning and playful social interactions that most of us haven't experienced since childhood. For that, it's essential.”

About This Game

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Beyond the Sandbox

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

*Walks into admin lounge*
*Squeakers rage at me left right and front.*
*10 minutes later...* "Remember. No squea-"
*Everyone in my group gets banned.*
And that has been an accurate simulation of Garry's Mod, for 10 bucks, its a good squeaker genocide simulator

I love this game, you can do whatever you want. Also the best game modes is hide and seek or prop hunt. I would recommend this to you but you need a good pc to play this game cause it lags sometimes because the map that you're about to play is downloading. But it's still a great game to play and it's funny.

You know, this game reminds me a lot of my childhood.

Like:
-Making vechicles with lego's.
-Building a wooden fortress in my backyard.
-Burning down my wooden fortress with innocent people in it.
-Find new guns and shoot my friends.
-Stealing military jets and fly them into buildings
-Creating giant atombombs without permission from my parrents.

Yeah, good old times.
10/10 Would get nostalgia again.

The average session in Garry's Mod

- Start up GMOD
- Looks at low ping servers
- All servers empty
- Find reliable server with plenty of people on
- Plenty of people fill the server up plenty. Reliable server is full
- Joins high ping server
- Missing textures
- Missing textures everywhere
- Tries to move
- Lags beyond the wall of reality
- Sound glitches out and the 12 year olds microphone starts repeating
- Leaves server due to loss of eardrums
- Sees that reliable server is open
- Joins reliable server
- Low ping isn't an improvement due to the mass of lamp posts and baloons placed
- Asks admin if he can do a server cleanup
- Gets called a whiny ♥♥♥♥ and I should join another server
- Retaliates
- Admin gets a little steamy
- Gets muted
- Instant the mute timer ends, says that it was unreasonable
- Admin gets a little more than steamy
- Gets kicked for 1 hour
- Eats food for 1 hour
- Joins reliable server. Again
- Admin is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ I returned after my temporary ban ended
- Gets perma-banned for returning to server

Not sure what direction the game is heading in, but give it a whizz. Its pretty decent

I think this may say quite a bit about this game. If it doesn't, well, here's a review, now gluten bias free and better than ever.

TL:DR:

Garry's Mod is a nice first person sandbox, combining addicting gameplay to ever-growing content availability. However, if your interest is more on visual art, try SFM. It's somewhat more complex to use but the control over scene building is definitely superior.

Overview

Garry's Mod is, if anything, the definition of the sandbox genre at its core. Exactly what it says on the tin, you don't have a preset objective other than finding something to do with your game. Whether you are looking to make NPC battles among zombies and soldiers, building a robot out of everyday objects and mechanical constraints, passing time with creative imagery making or creating mods for no less than a mod at its core, it is up to you.

Of course, you can make it all at the same time as well. Or, not. I'm not telling you what to do.

Singleplayer Mode

This game has as one of its main factors the single-player experience. While Garry's Mod might commonly be mistaken for a first person shooter due to its wide range of weaponry to chose from stock rifles to user-generated what-have-you-launchers, players with larger foresight will be focusing on the tools and models that the game and community content offer. Even if the player isn't interested in the persaying artistic section of the game that range from simple character portraits to full-fledged animation videos, one can very well perform physics experiments with contraptions and machinery and mess around, having some fun with constructions and stress-testing their machine's physics processing capability.

--NOTE--
Most of the time I spent in GMod was in singleplayer, with rarely if ever a few occasions with multiplayer. It should be kept in mind that if your interest is mainly creating scenes and visual artwork then Garry's Mod may be a stepping stone for you, whereas Source Filmmaker is a much more powerful and precise tool for visual artwork.

Multiplayer Mode

Multiplayer is a differentiated, varied experience depending on the player's choice. From fighting zombie hordes to the classic "Trouble In Terrorist Town" and some sorts of RP modes, players can play a variety of game modes. Racing, shooting, survival, and of course, aimless multiplayer sandbox. Be mindful of the following, though: most game servers and addons used in multiplayer require at least one of the Source Engine games installed and 'mounted' content into Garry's Mod itself, meaning content that you don't have will appear as errors; however, servers have been recently using more of their custom content, that don't require many of Source games mounted. Check requirements for each addon and server for further instructions.

Gameplay

Gameplay in Garry's Mod is a matter of specialization for each kind of game mode, though it is mostly no more than expanding possibilities upon the core:

Sandbox: Create things and scenes, make pictures, contraptions, or physics experiments.

Zombie Survival: Exactly what it says on the tin.

Trouble in Terrorist Town: Slightly similar to the 'Mafia' party game; Uncover concealed hostile players among innocents before the end of the round.

DarkRP/RP: Generally, roleplaying, taking place mostly in cities.

Cinema: Virtual movie theater.

There's obviously more game modes. A quick look around the Workshop should help.

Graphics

The graphical experience of the game is heavily dependant on your computer rig and your investment into addons. While it doesn't require a heavy rig to run smoothly at high graphical configurations, it will require progressively more potent graphical processing power as user-content improvements and overhauls to visuals are installed. Visual results vary, though here is one of my personal favourite pictures from my gallery. Note that this literally isn't the final form as even better graphical results can be achieved with special configurations to the game. It is in no way comparable to Source Filmmaker, but it is still nice to the eyes.

Sound

The sound system to the game is familiar to players of other Source games, with few audible glitches and issues. Improvement packs are widely available for higher quality and custom sounds for anything since player death sounds to general sound overhauls.

There is no native music in the game, though I believe some servers have background music and music player addons.

Content Creation

While not a factor to the game itself, content creation is not a simple process. Being in the Source Engine, there's some barriers around content creation. Likewise, many of the changes done to the engine itself rendered a few of the official creation tools inoperable, though new ones are developed to replace them. It's not an easy task, but it is likely the reader of the review is mostly interested on just downloading content and exploring possibilities before trying to create their own content.

One of the few games that I never got bored of, probably due to the countless amounts of mods you can get.
The community contains some toxic players sure, but there are just as many good players as well.
At first I didn't like it, but once you know how it works and get a good amount of mods, the fun is endless.
Give it a try.

Garry's Mod is about creativity, letting its community create and expand its player base. whether it be mods on the workshop, roleplay/gamemode servers or discussions/screenshots on the forums. An example is a "serious" civil war rp server which attracts more people who would rather scream "The South Shall Rise Again" or "enslave the negroes" than do anything serious. 10/10
