July 2016 Update

A new update has been released!

This update is optional, however it is strongly recommended that server owners install it.
Clients will automatically update via Steam when the game is restarted.

Peer-To-Peer Listen Servers
Servers that are created via the main-menu's "Start New Game" button can now be connected to via Steam's P2P networking. This means that - on most networks - friends are able to connect to each other's games without any special network configuration being required (e.g. port forwarding).

To use it, all you have to do is use your friends list to join/invite a friend!

Queued (Multi-Core) Rendering
This isn't finished yet, but queued rendering should be pretty robust now. Any changes in performance are entirely dependent on your hardware and the scene being rendered.

You can enable it by running a few commands when you launch the game (press Shift+Escape to open the console):
gmod_mcore_test 1
mat_queue_mode -1
cl_threaded_bone_setup 1

Other Changes
  • Added mat_requires_rt_alloc_first ConVar from upstream.
  • Lua console commands are now removed when disconnecting from a server/changing level.
  • Replicated Lua ConVars are now properly synched with the server.
  • Scripted weapons now function correctly when switching to a weapon with no ammo.
  • Clients will no longer be disconnected with the reason "CL_CopyExistingEntity: missing client entity".
  • Crouch-jumping will no longer cause the screen to flicker after a certain amount of server up-time.
  • Fixed rare crash that occurs when increasing the outgoing network buffer size for game-state snapshots.
  • Ropes no longer cause the game to not properly close on exit.
  • Fixed issue that could cause the "GetLuaTable != TABLE" crash to occur on level change.
  • file.Find() now sorts its results properly. The default behavior is unchanged.
  • HTTP() no longer leaks request references and won't crash if the Lua state is destroyed during a request.
  • Some security fixes.

You can find full changelist here.

July Update Is Imminent

The next update for Garry's Mod will be coming next month.

Pre-release Steam branch
The pre-release Steam Beta branch for Garry's Mod has been updated and contains all the changes that will be included into the next update.

You can see the full change list for the next update as well as how to join or leave the pre-release branch here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/changelist/prerelease/

The next update, while not having a usual massive amount of changes, comes with two very big features:
  • Steam Peer-To-Peer - Allows people to play with each other without having to mess around with your router, modem or firewalls, similarly to how CS:GO does it. This is best suited to play with a few of your friends and is not meant for hosting public servers. Simply start a mutliplayer game from your main menu and invite your friends through the Steam Friend's List.
  • Queued(Multicore) Rendering - This will boost your in-game performance in most cases up to double the frame rate. Currently the option is hidden and you will have to enable it manually every time in order to use it, this is in case there are still problems with it. Instructions on how to enable it are below

To enable Queued(Multicore) Rendering, enter the following console commands into your console before entering a game.
gmod_mcore_test 1
mat_queue_mode -1
cl_threaded_bone_setup 1

The pre-release beta branch is compatible with all servers in the game, so you will be able to play on servers and test the game at the same time!

Help us test it!
We ask you, players and modders alike, to help us test this update so that there will be as few problems as possible.

We urge you to spend around 15 minutes in single player, testing your addons and whatnot, and report any issues you find that did not happen before here:
https://github.com/Facepunch/garrysmod-issues/
Or at least in the comments of this announcement.

If you own a Garry's Mod server, we highly recommend you test your server on the pre-release branch. Information about using experimental branches on dedicated servers can be found here:
http://wiki.garrysmod.com/page/Hosting_A_Dedicated_Server

“It brings back the silly glee of unbridled experimentation, intuitive learning and playful social interactions that most of us haven't experienced since childhood. For that, it's essential.”

About This Game

Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. There aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.

You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you. You can do it offline, or join the thousands of players who play online each day.

If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions. But if you want to do more, we have the means.

Beyond the Sandbox

The Garry's Mod community is a tremendous source of content and has added hundreds of unique modes to the game. In Trouble In Terrorist Town, you can be a detective solving an online murder as criminals attempt to cover up their homicides. Be a ball, a plant, a chair, or anything else in Prop Hunt's elaborate, shape-shifting game of Hide & Seek. Elevator: Source is gaming's first elevator thrill ride, delivering players to airlocks and kitten dance parties.

We have one of the most vibrant Steam Community Workshops, with over 300'000 models, maps, and contraptions to download. It has everything from new tools to improve your builds, to guns that fire rainbow-tinged nuclear blasts from space. Take as much or as little as you need: it’s all free.

Please note: Some multiplayer servers and game-modes might require you to own other games - such as Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2.

This is a great sandbox video game. It has a great community, the addons are fun to play with. The only problems i have is that sometimes TTT has a lot of annoying people calling you hackers.

Let's keep this simple at first this is a GrEaT game that you should buy.

Why it's so good
First of all this game runs really well on my toaster of a computer (I can't even run minecraft at over 12 FPS) Runs at 30 FPS.
Gives you hours upon hours of enjoyment from building scenes to playing on the vast majority of game modes from ttt to DarkRP, or even playing in single player because you have no friends *Cough* Me *Cough*
Finally there is a friendly community that's happy to help, and post plenty of workshop items for you to fool around with.
But this is only scratching the surface of what you can do in this amazing game.
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR I TOLD YOU WHY YOU SHOULD BUY THIS GAME GET IT BEFORE I SEND THE HOLY GMOD COMMUNITY UNTO YOU!

About Garry's Mod
Garry's Mod is a nice first person sandbox, combining addicting gameplay to ever-growing content availability. However, if your interest is more on visual art, try Source Filmmaker. It's somewhat more complex to use but the control over scene building is definitely superior.

Singleplayer Mode
This game has as one of its main factors the single-player experience. While Garry's Mod might commonly be mistaken for a first person shooter due to its wide range of weaponry to chose from stock rifles to user-generated what-have-you-launchers, players with larger foresight will be focusing on the tools and models that the game and community content offer.

Multiplayer Mode
Multiplayer is a differentiated, varied experience depending on the player's choice. From fighting zombie hordes to the classic "Trouble In Terrorist Town" and some sorts of RP modes, players can play a variety of game modes. Racing, shooting, survival, and of course, aimless multiplayer sandbox.

Graphics
The graphical experience of the game is heavily dependant on your computer rig and your investment into addons. While it doesn't require a heavy rig to run smoothly at high graphical configurations, it will require progressively more potent graphical processing power as user-content improvements and overhauls to visuals are installed. Visual results vary, though here is one of my personal favourite pictures from my gallery.

All in All Garry's Mod is a really nice Game :-)

10/10 From Me

I have 3799.1 hours on record for this game. I used to have so much fun playing this game. After PewDiePie and Venturian Tale started creating stupid ♥♥♥ videos, the young immature audience flocked to the community. Any server you want to join will be flooded with immature children.

Administration teams consist of 11, 12, 13 year olds. They are not fair and they do not even follow their own rules. They get a taste of authority and just can't handle it. Almost no kid that age can. The servers are littered with these admins to the point that you'll find yourself banned for simply disagreeing with one. The community used to be great, but it has fallen down hill over the last few years.

I would never wish this to happen to any game and it pisses me off that it happened to this game. If you buy the game, stay far from DarkRP servers and make sure you download good mods. The singleplayer is still great with mods, but after a while it gets depressing to play a game while so lonely.

If you really want to have a good time and you are an adult, host your own server and administrate it fairly. Regulate the amount of intrusive, game breaking children. You will have a good server and you will be one of the very few server owners who make the game fun again.

Otherwise, do not buy this game. It's turning into ♥♥♥♥ing Roblox.

If you're a kid wanting to see reviews for this game: Oh who am I kidding you don't care about the reviews.

If you're an adult wanting to see reviews for thsi game: Honestly the only fun you can have now and days is by miraculously finding a server hosted and managed by another adult, which is seemingly impossible now and days since kids following that mass of their honestly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ youtubers have utterly swarmed this game. You either miraculously find a good one, or you say "♥♥♥♥ it, I'll host my own.", and then end up banning almost 2-3 kids daily because for some reason all they want to do is minge around, try to crash your server, or in general be an annoying little twatwaffle. If you don't feel like putting up with this, then enjoy all the servers owned by a seven-year-old's mother's credit card with his bunch of 6-9 year old admins who don't even enforce their own rules.

Oh also, never play RP. All it leads to is internet drama.
Side-note, MORBUS is probably the most enjoyable side-gamemode but nobody ever plays it.
TTT is full of trolls, there's only one server that is the exception to this, but hey coincidence much; I admin for it.
Sandbox is where you will question the IQ of 99% of players you see on a server.

1) You buy it.
2) You're confused.
3) You leave it in your Steam library for a few weeks.
4) You play on a server.
5) You become addicted.

Seriously, this game is a drug. I need help. Am I Marina Joyce? No. I think I'm having a mid-life crisis. Oh god. OH GOD. HEEEELP.

Garys Mod and How I got Cancer

So I'd like to start off this review with a fact: Garys Mod is incredibly fun. The graphics are more than dated, but Prop Hunt and Trouble in Terroist Town are deff some fun game modes to play to pass some time.

With that being said, however, the sheer unfun of Microphones and headsets will leave you exhausted.
I picked up Garys Mod in July of 2016, and, upon joining my first server, was met with helpful players. Terrific, I thought. The game still has a supportive player base who are willing to help new comers. After learning the very simple rules and how to play, I ventured onward to a more populated server.

That was the first and last time I would find even remotely supportive players and I wish them luck in getting out of the hell hole they are stuck in.

You'll be very lucky to find anyone over the age of 14-16 who isn't a complete waste over the mic. In a game like this, I prefer to use my headset and talk to others, whether it's during prop hunt or TTT, and it has just been riddiled with children, mic spammers, and the such.

Now children are not inherently bad, there's nothing wrong with kids. I have a kid and one day I will put her on the PC to join me in glorious pc gaming. But I'll also be monitoring her, as I was when I was young. These kids are not being monitored by their parent (I assume their father or mother left them at an early age due to some of the things that comes out of these kids mouths) They will spew profanity over the mic and it just sounds wrong. It hits the ear wrong. Hearing a nine year old tell me my mother is a ♥♥♥♥♥ and he ♥♥♥♥ed her with his 12 inch ♥♥♥♥ just sounds wrong. Hearing it from a grown adult, alright, I can deal with it. But this is something I haven't had the pleasure of hearing over a mic often enough apparently.

You also run the risk of joining a server that has a female on it. Now, as I stated, my little girl will be playing games one day. There is nothing wrong with being a female gamer, and if you are one, props to you and all that jazz. BUT, adults, children, and everything in between loses their ♥♥♥♥ing minds when it comes to an online girl. In every game. But Garrys Mod is certainly the absolute worst case I have ever seen.

Every server I join, the girl (abtly named GirlGamer69HeHe) Will say one word over the mic, and the whole server literally lags out with applause. The server will comment on how hillarious she is, and continue to talk over each other for twenty minutes trying to have a conversation with this one person. Again, some instances it isn't her fault. Some obviously love the attention and continue grappling for it, but some are just gamers who want to game. It's the other people who don't have a grip and lose their ♥♥♥♥.

I just got done playing on a server with twenty people on it. This one female who was brittish started telling people she would smother them with her breasts. She was an admin on this server. She had the ability to kick, mute, ban and etc.
No admin jobs are not 'jobs', but I would like to think the people in charge of these servers woul hold a litlte bit of respect.

With all that stated, and this rant pretty much over, I'd like to just state that if you have friends that play this with you, this could possibly be a lot of fun as Youtubers have shown. But if you go in it, alone, expect what I've laid out before you. This is not a Garry's Mod is garbage review. Garry's Mod is extremely fun. It's the community that makes it unplayable for me.
