About This Game

Portal™ is a new single player game from Valve. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay.

The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life® 2's Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation.

Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuvering objects, and themselves, through space.

This game is so much fun, had a blast playing it. Only downside, too short of a story. But hey, there's always portal 2.

Overall a great puzzle game, but it does not take long to complete the story. However, you can download extra maps so the fun never ends!

THIS GAME SCORES [1 2 3 *4*]

A great 1st person puzzle game, and a great example of how some glimpses of things behind the scenes can add up to a story with quite desirable emotional content. (That's all I say because spoilers.) Portal's content, graphics, sounds, story, tech deserve a firm thumbs-up with both hands.

Portal is a great example of non-Euclidean geometry in a game. You enter a hole in the wall, but you don't end up on the other side of the wall, and even the visual appearance behaves accordingly.

OTHER GAMES WITH PORTALS

Narbacular Drop by Nuclear Monkey Software was the prototype game with user-placeable portals that lead to the creation of Portal, and (most of?) that team ended up on Valve's Portal team. That game is also worth a play.

But the first game I know of that used portal technology was Prey (2006), a really good 1st person shooter. Incidentally, I bought it for €1 in a German retail store a few days ago (but had played it before; those were the days when you installed a DVD without having to download anything else), so I know that it's sadly not available on Steam.

With little config file editing, Prey runs on 1920x1080, at least that's what I set in the file, but what I saw on screen rather looked like 4K for some reason. Maybe it was indeed 4K contrary to my choice because to achieve custom resolutions, you also have to set a screen mode variable, and maybe this leads to the game using desktop resolution.

I had to turn off anti-aliasing because the frame-rate was not fluid even though my machine can't be the reason - must be the old engine. Frame-rate is fluid without AA, and I didn't miss the AA, so it probably was indeed 4K.

Config file editing allows to set arbitrary FoV.

I played a few minutes on Windows 10 with August 2016 anniversary update on a GTX980.

So, if you can get your hands on Prey today (2016), you can still play it very well, and it's still a great game. And even though it's the first non-Euclidean-geometry game (that I know of), it's very already very well done.

I have no words...

It's too solid as game, the mechanic is something that I had never seen in my life and I love it, it's the more original Valve's creations,The history is absolutely 10/10 You can't hate the main villain, in fact is now my waifu, but whatever, if you're thinking about buying this, JUST DO IT.

Amazing game that I recommend for everyone, but most of all to those who like puzzles. One of the bests of the kind. Unmissable.

This is one of the most incredible and clever games to have ever been made. The humor and the puzzles are both stellar. And the presentation is excellent. I will say that this entry in this series is a bit short, it felt like a test run of the mechanics to see if Portal 2 could be made. But I'd still argue it's worth the money, it's just that good.
