Too much talking, after 10 minute intro i got bored. And menu is confusing, but if you like to play it vs friends or single fight. Than it's ok, but story is bad.

What is Aquanox?

Aquanox is a sci-fi-underwater-shooter. The story is pretty weak, the voice-acting is horrible (german version), but gameplay-wise I had a lot of fun playing this game. Despite it´s age, you can choose high resolutions and the graphics are not too ugly and colourful. You can buy different ships, weapons and upgrades, which is a lot of fun. The missions vary quite a bit and you need to talk to different people on every underwater-station for the story-progress. This part can be annoying due to the terrible voice-acting and the slow story progression, but somehow it´s a charming trash story. The AI on the lowest difficulty level can be pretty challenging. The dark atmosphere and the upgrade mechanic of of the game kept me playing, even if it just plays underwater, the devs put effort in designing interesting landscapes, ships and enemies. So if you prefer games like X-Wing/Tie Fighter or Wing Commander you should give Aquanox a try!

Technical details

The game is pretty old, but it runs fine on windows 10. Higher resolutions can be chosen in the graphic-settings. You will need to adjust the sensitivity of your mouse, otherwise your movement will be too fast during your play. It is possible to do this in the game in the setup menu or outside the game in the "ini-file". It also might help to lower the resolution of your monitor a bit to get a better experience while moving.

There is a bug in mission 29 where enemies keep on respawning until the mission fails, so just restart the mission and play again.

A cool vehicular FPS, like Descent, but underwater. For it's time it had a good game engine often used as a benchmark. Story is interesting but gameplay is somewhat symplistic. Like it.

Unfortunately, the game is clotted with unending dialogue, or rather monologue, about a world that has not yet been presented to us. Most missions are about protecting something or someone. The game itself works fine, graphics aren't really that bad, especially since the game is from 2001.

AquaNox
Underwater Flight Simulator, Shooter
a spoiler-free review

Release Date: 30 November, 2001
Rating: Recommended

It’s the 27th century on the planet Aqua, formerly known as Earth. Nuclear war and radiation fallout have rendered the surface uninhabitable, though there isn’t really much of a surface left after the polar ice caps melted and flooded the planet. Humans still survive and even thrive in underwater stations and cities, but no one has seen the surface in centuries.

- Gameplay -
AquaNox plays like a flight simulator combined with a shooter in an underwater setting. Gameplay is comprised of several linear missions with set objectives that give Credits to you, the mercenary protagonist Emerald “Deadeye” Flint. These credits can be used to purchase torpedoes, guns, shielding units and repair units for your ship. You can even buy new, improved ships.

- Visuals -
The game was published in 2001 and shows it, although it was praised for its cutting-edge look back when it was released. The water’s light refraction patterns are fascinating to watch on the sea floor. The HUD is rather confusing, with many unlabeled progress or health bars (I’m not sure even after playing the game). The enemies are rather stiff for living beings (those that are alive, anyway).

- Sound/Music -
Sound effect quality is better than contemporaries such as Half-Life, but the music is completely comprised of early 2000s electronic/industrial (probably not the exact genre, but gives you an idea). Deadeye Flint’s voice acting is normal; the rest, not so much. This game probably has the worst voice acting in any game I’ve ever experienced. From perpetually drunk/high-sounding actors to “women” who are obviously painfully high falsetto male voices, be thankful the dialogue is skippable.

- My Thoughts -
I really liked this game after I got used to thinking in three dimensions. Unlike flight simulators, this game has swim up and down buttons, which got a lot of use from me. I also really liked the game physics and attention to detail, like if you press back twice your engine shuts off. The missions were varied enough to provide a challenge and keep things interesting. Enemy variety wasn’t fabulous, but not boring either. There are no checkpoints in the missions, so each time you fail you have to play the whole thing over again. It’s a short game, less than eight hours for me – it will take longer if you up the difficulty.

- Conclusion -
Buy this game. It’s a short, good oldie from the turn of the millennium that’s only $5 regular price. If it goes on sale for $0.49, there’s no reason not to pick it up. Just don’t expect flawless voice acting. Despite how terrible they are, it’s actually quite funny at times. Light! (standard Aquarian greeting/goodbye)

I find this one to be a hard one to recommend. It's really different than today's standard shooter games, the voice acting is awful, the plot is meh and sometimes there's a lot of story telling and a lot less shooting, there's litteraly parts in the story mode that are just one loading screen after another, and when you forget to save when you got through so much dialogue.... It's really annoying ..
But there's good in this game, don't get me wrong, i think they really got the feeling of being in a submarine, the guns really sound amazing, all in all, when you play, it's really cool, but yeh...

Personally, I bought this game because I played the demo when it was released years ago and I now was just curious about the game as a whole. I personally it aged well, it's just old ideas.

Holy crap, this game is bad. Using a keyboard and mouse: The response time is SO laggy, that doing missions is absurdly hard. This game's "highest end graphics" look old and stale.

Can you say voice acting? NOPE.

Your El Topo sounds like an on again, off again Sean Connery. It's almost like he just suddenly phases between a clean American accent, and suddenly Sean Connery. It's SO obvious that he's tryin to act like a good voice actor. However, sadly, that's just not so. If the scenes with El Topo were re-voiced in either the American accent, or full on Sean Connery, then what ever. However, this lackluster attempt at being "suave" just makes me laugh.

Frog: Holy ♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥. I didn't even finish allowing this ♥♥♥♥ing terd of a voice actor, to ruin my ears. Less than 4 seconds in, and I'm hitting escape. I wanted to begin, ritualistically stabbing myself, or my computer, in order to make this unsightly thing just die, or go away. Never before in my life, have I ever listened to some Poke'mon voice actor reject, only to want to do physical harm to myself, or my machine. Please, for the sake of all that is, fire this person, and replace them immediately.

How this ♥♥♥♥ing nonsense got past Steam's Greenlight, I'll never know. Thank lord Gaben, that this piece of horse ♥♥♥♥ was on sale. What's worse is, this game shamelessly rips off Cortana, from Halo. They even attempt to make her call you "baby" to sexy it up. Ick...

If ever there were a depths of hell for those of us who aren't scrubs, this game will most assuredly be there. I wouldn't wish this badly designed, voiced, or performed abomination on my worst of enemies.

Do not waste your money, even if it's cheap.

I do however, have something positive to say about this game.

I'm a fan of audio books. My favorite of which is, Ruby The Galactic Gumshoe. The way this video game is put together story wise, and how the voice acting is carried out, is in a similar light to Ruby. In this regards, I give you a C- for effort.

Simply unplayable with today's mice it seems, tried some tweaks, didn't work. I think it's the last time I buy an old game EVER, every time there is something that doesn't work well and keeps me from enjoying it.

Also it seems like they forced EVERY actor in the game to act as badly as they can, because it's clearly impossible to hire not a single good one the the lot. And they did put a lot of dialogues so it was clearly something important...

Game sucks.
-Game option menu there is only 1 option, so why even create a submenu for 1 single config?
-Sensitivity is insanely high by default.
-The worst hud effect i ever seen in a game, it wobbles around with your camera, combine that with the high mouse sensitivity and you can't see sheet.
-The first mission: shoot scrap in the scrapyard at waypoint, after shooting all visible scrap the mission still wasn't progressing.

Unistalled.

«Yeeaaaah, that one's heading for the bottom!»
- Flavio Piccolini with his probably most repeated line ever in this game

I'm actually quite surprised to read so many negative reviews about Aquanox. It's one of those games I always wanted to play back in time, but never really had the chance to do so. Cyberpunkish submarine dogfights with crazy characters at 5000m under the sea, with sea monsters and ♥♥♥♥? What could possibly go wrong?

Many years later, recently, I finally put my hands on it. Contrary to my expectations I find that the game aged pretty well. The colorful graphics, although from 2001, are still nice to look at with all those light and plankton FX. Characters and voice actors are indeed cheesy, but really do entertain. So does the soundtrack, that could have been composed by The Prodigy in the flesh... Gameplay is fast and uncomplicated, there's even some nice cutscenes - what more could one want?

There are still some remaining issues like the default sensitivy with modern mice or the really unvaried mission design. In most levels you just dive from point A to B and shoot the ♥♥♥♥ out of Bionts, Crawlers or later Sea Monsters. The conversation sequences between the missions are also not everyone's cup of tea, although I was actually fine with it.

After about 10 hours you'll see the ending flickering over your screen and you may be dissapointed by the rather open ending. But it's definitely an entertaining experience after all, and that's what counts.

The Good:
+ Colorful and detailed graphics (for its time)
+ Interesting concept
+ Entertaining singleplayer campaign
+ Fine gameplay
+ Memorable music
+ Multiplayer
+ Cutscenes
+ Cheesy but solid voice acting

The Bad:
- No real variety in mission design
- Not a too wide selection of submarines and weapons
- Story and characters not everyone's taste

The Ugly:
-- Control issues with modern mice

8/10

When I first saw aquanox is available on steam, I was really happy about it, another great title to play. But after I installed the game I discovered a lot of technical issues. First of all, there is no crossfire profile for this game, so if u got crossfire setup, you need to turn it off or you will get a nice flickering. Second problem comes if you choose the controllers of the game. Can be controlled by keyboard+joystick or keyboard+mouse combo. If you choose the later one and you have a modern laser mouse, you'll experince slow response time, which is kinda annoying. One solution for this problem, if you can get an older optical mouse. And finally let’s talk about the a game bit. If you want an undersea simulation or oceanic real-time strategy, then forget it, but if you're a fan of arcade action and great dialogues, then don't hesitate and grab it, even with those technical issues.

A good way to describe this game, would be a Post-Apocalyptic-Underwater-Minisub-Shooter-Noire. The length of this description is appropriate given the ceaseless exposition and shoe-horning of story and game world terms into the script.

The game is not without charm though.

I would suggest it is a good reference for the would be game writer. The problem presented is that the player's interaction with the world is almost entirely made up of flying a combat mini-submarine and shooting at things. The experience itself tells little story without all the radio chatter and docking bay dialog around it.

As a result, many of the characters between missions will have highly convoluted political opinions or possess absurdly esoteric knowledge. Your point of view in the story is the role of Flint, who himself seems to have some very developed opinions. This makes it quite challenging to relate to the character effectively.

An attempt to make the game relatable seems to have been made in the form of a stylistic choice in the script. The game is strewn with metaphors and similes and delivered in a film-noire-esque monotone meter. Ultimately, the game asks too much of that stylistic choice to fix its over-riding problems.

It's a shame, since if you dig into the script, you can tell a lot of effort has been made to flesh the game world out, but it's just too esoteric. Players can handle detail, but they have to have been along for the ride that tangentially cobbles together that detail.

As for the game mechanics themselves - well your first problem on a modern system will be attempting to get the controls to work. If your optical mouse has a high polling rate which you cannot lower, you're going to have a bad time and I would suggest trying to use a pad.

There are some attempts at underwater physics in the form of currents and water resistance seems to effect the motion of the turret control (although, this could just be the modern peripheral issues). There is a ballistics system which is nice as you have to lead your target and you would expect water to have some effect on projectile velocity. The lack of speed boosting (at least up to the point I have played) is disappointing - speed as a limited resource makes for an exciting mechanic in this type of game.

On all fronts, Aquanox is a reference game that has a lot to teach the would be game-maker about the mis-use of talent. It is rough around the edges and perhaps ruined somewhat by modern computer equipment. But if you pick it up for cheap or in a bundle, I think it's worth a look.

My highlight of the game, has to be the drum & bass music with a 1950s bbc radio announcer accent layered over the top.

The setting is certainly unique, with a cyberpunk, dystopian world set UNDER DA SEA. While conversations are far too numerous and often serve no more than cyberpunk cliche fluff (Drugs! Genetic engineering! Megacorps!), the main storyline and missions make great use of the underwater setting and world that's been created. The gameplay, however, felt slow, clunky, with little or no strategy involved. A lot of strafing and leading shots, and outfitting your ship often feels like just buying the most expensive equipment and unleashing hell. The menus tease at a Freelancer style roaming world where you can jump between stations and find side-missions and do trading and the like, but for the most part you're railroaded onto a series of missions to complete, and odd visits to the shop. It clearly has an emphasis on action style shooting than swift maneuvarability, smart outfitting, and working with wingmen. I found it far too slow and boring to venture beyond the third chapter, and escort missions are a nightmare. Which is a shame, I cared for the story, characters and progression I could have made, but doing missions was just very, very boring, even with a thumping techno soundtrack that's right at home in the late 90s.

An awesome, FPS-like game. Underwater action, and even now, you can't call this graphic "outdated" - after 13 years, it's still not that bad on maximal settings.
Game is really addictive, I've played it for the first time in 2003, in my childhood times. Now, when I play it, I still enjoy it really much.
It contains a campaign with about ~40 missions, 4 fast-battle maps and a multiplayer mode, so it will give you at least 10 hours of great gaming. Totally worth that price.
Also the soundtracks are awzum - while shooting all the enemies, you'll listen to "nightclub-great tracks" :3
Would recommend, 10/10, even 13 years after release.

Edit 11/3/2015
1) Since Multiplayer servers were provided by GameSpy, there is no chance for multiplayer gaming after GameSpy has been deleted. So if you want to play on Multi, the only option would be through a VPN client with friends through LAN mode.
2) Some of you may have trouble with movement. I don't know why, but with optical mouses it's sometimes very hard to look around. Lowering your sensitivity helps you a bit, but if it still too annoying for you then the best solution is to play either with controller or oldstyled mouse (that ones with a ball inside instead of a sensor, I don't know how this is called)
3) If anybody else got addicted to game music as much as me, look in YouTube for "PVCF" - all soundtracks would be listed there - HYYYYYPE /o/

Enjoy the game ^^

The last war will be fought beneath the waves.

Even though this game has been released 12 years ago, it still manages to capture the feeling of underwater Sci-Fi Combat in a great fashion. Its graphics are very colourful and atmospheric (and some may argue better than the graphics of its darker successor because of this), sound effects are satisfying and fitting.

The voice acting is mostly done pretty well, and the story is being told by well written conversations between lots of intriguing characters that are presented through well-drawn images in a fitting art style.

The combat itself is good, firing weapons feels satisfying, torpedos find their targets somewhat too rarely and the difficulty and length can vary greatly between missions, but overall the game manages to capture the vibe of submarine combat very well.

The plot can be confusing at times and the cutscenes between chapters of the game are of lackluster quality for some reason, but nonetheless I enjoyed my playthrough a lot.

I you liked games like Freelancer, and generally prefer action over realism and rpg-elements, this is for you.

Considering the very low price you can get it for these days, I recommend picking this game up for a few hours of submarine action, and if you do happen to like it, you may also take a look at the great sequel.

This is a game that clearly has not aged well, unlike some games from its era. The graphics are decent, for the time period, but that's about it. You'd exepct a game that's essentially a six degrees of freedom shooter to have appropriate controls, but the controls are more like a FPS, which does not mesh well with what's going on.

The story is... Confusing to say the least. I was able to determine that, after a terrible nuclear war, humanity began living underwater. Beyond that, I'm not sure what's going on. The audio balancing on the cutscenes is so bad I could barely make out the voices past the music. The conversations are so seemingly random, with the plot simple jumping in several points without warning.

Perhaps the game's worst offense, and it's one that's seen a lot in games of this era, is the terrible escort/protect the objective missions. The game throws so many enemies/turrets at you at once and your allies will blindly follow their programmed path that protecting them, or an objective, is so incredibly difficult that it's hard not to just skip levels. Even playing on Easy, which was proving overall unchallenging, I failed each and every protect/escort mission several times.

The idea is great, the world is interesting, but the game itself is more of an excerise in patience.

Unique post-apocalyptic submersible shooter. Nicely voice narrated dark cyberpunk story. Modern GPU features and high resolutions can be enabled which make this game look very good for a game released in 2001.

8/10

Pretty fun game actually. Very difficulut personally. WHile the game is fun to play and has high replay value if you like this type of game the story is interesting but not powerful and the voice acting is terrible. I mean this game is still great but just in general this is a good but meh kind of game. I would give it 8/10 for Visuals, Voice Acting: 0/10, gameplay mechanics 9/10, fun 8/10, and instructions or tutuorials a fat zero as it doesn't show you how the hell you do anything so overall just a big 7/10.

Pros:
.Fairly pretty for an old game, despite its age.
.Soundtrack is hectic and enjoyable, if a bit repetitive.
.Blowing up enemy craft is satisfying and fun enough to keep one playing.
.Giant tentacle monsters are cool.

Cons
.Most light-craft enemies are almost impossible to hit, kiting your shots endlessly and zooming around outside of your vision.

.Torpedoes are a joke, a bad joke. While 1-hit KO'ing most enemies, their targeting is terrible. One often has to resort to firing even high-end torpedoes at point-blank range; despite this, they will often veer off at the last moment. It is a small mercy that enemy rockets are almost as bad at hitting you.

.Auto-lose conditions. Aquanox has DOZENS of missions to the tune of 'protect the transport' or 'kill the target before time runs out'. Dealing with veritable sh*t storms of enemy craft over and over again because you couldn't blow them up fast enough to protect your mark is the pinnacle of frustration.

.Incomprehensible story. The story of Aquanox is vague, at best. Add to this the frankly atrocious voice acting and sound balance so bad one often can't hear characters over background music, and you'll find yourself skipping most dialogue.

Final thoughts:
Aquanox is one of the most frustrating games I have ever played. I saw it through to the end on the promise of giant sea monsters, though not without suffering puke-inducing rage brought on by endless escort missions. While it's great blowing up easier-to-hit craft, the sheer annoyance of most of the story campaign kills the fun factor.

A good shooting game which is underwater in the very far future. I have no idea what the people are saying when they yap on in the dialogue but I understand some of what happens in the action scenes. Out of nowhere you get to fight giant squids which makes you really wonder what the ♥♥♥♥ is happening, but you should buy it if you like old shooting games.

Aquanox is the underdog of the early 2000-s' games. While it received only mediocre review scores, it's still one of my favourite shooters. With music inspired by the Prodigy, amazing graphics for its time, and an unusual story and setting, Aquanox is a classic in my book :)
It's also not an easy game, often requiring a good amount of skill to overcome its challenges.

Great game. I still play it from time to time :) Note: Aquanox 1 works great with old-school ball mouse. Optic & Laser mouses tend to lag while in fights.

I remember when I played this way back when it was released. Good memories!
It is still a lot of fun to play, but you might need to fiddle around a little to get it to work properly on recent hardware
(there is a bug with the usb polling rate of modern usb mouses).
Non the less once you get it to work you'll have plenty of fun!

Extremely short, but pretty fun. Voice acting - absolutely terrible. The concept altogether though is cool.
