Eorzea. A Land embraced by Gods and forged by Heroes. Seeking control of this realm and its abundant crystal resources, the Garlean Empire sends forth a massive host on a campaign to conquer its southern neighbor. Driven by madness, the commander of the invading forces silently plots to tear the moon from the heavens and hurl it down upon the land. The people of the realm soon learn of this foul scheme, and join their hands in prayer in an eleventh-hour attempt to entreat the aid of the gods, only to see their endeavors fail. From within the moon emerges Bahamut, an ancient terror seething with rage fueled by countless generations of imprisonment. Sensing the tug of Fate, a powerful magus channels the last of his strength to send Eorzea’s heroes into a temporal rift. There they wait, untouched by the flames of destruction, until they are needed again. Those heroes are you, and the hour of awakening is now. Come and witness a realm reborn.

Okay, I posted this review and said there was nothing that said it was subscription based and I didn't see it when I bought the game. Then people told me there was, and honestly I feel stupid. Either way, I still don't understand why you'd have to pay $20 for a game that only let's you play for a month which it considers a "free trial" before making you get a subscription. At least mark it free to play with the note so you can than buy a subscription. Okay, my rant is over now, on to the review. For the short time I was playing it, I liked it. The character customization, the gameplay, the story that I didn't really get too involved in, it's all great. Except I'm still annoyed about the subscription and this is why it's a negative review. But if you aren't bothered by the subscription, go for it.

If my time in this game doesn't say it alone, this game is really good. There's a lot you can do in the game. Raiding, Interesting story (ish. until you hit 2.0 the story is hit and miss), and a huge world to explore, and that's just the beginning of it. There's an initial five races in the game, plus a sixth dragon race if you own Heavensward, with plenty of customization options making it extremely difficult to find a character designed the same as you. You can also use real world currency to change race and such if you decide you don't like it. There's an entire shop where you can get vanity items for real world currency and we won't go into details about how much money I have put into this game. This game is actually 0% pay to win, which I absolutely love. The beginning of the game is slightly unforgiving for newcomers to the game, but it gets better as you go on. The game for me was rather slow until I hit around level 20 which is where it speeds up in my opinion. There's also in game gambling at the Gold Saucer, which you can spend SO much time at. Triple Triad is super addicting when you're trying to collect all the cards. I do recommend having a friend to start with, though, as not having that friend to play with can actually make the game less fun at some parts. I should probably also mention the class system. There's 9 battle classes to choose from, differing between Tank, Healer, and DPS. These classes go into jobs when you hit level 30, all of these classes except for Arcanist goes into 1 class. Arcanist goes into Summoner and Scholar. There's also crafting classes that you can get lost in, as well as three extra jobs in Heavensward. Level 50 raiding is kind of on the deader side since Heavensward released, but I'm sure if you get people to do it, it won't be as bad. At level 50 you can get your job armour, which is actually some of the better armor at level 50. Your job weapon for level 50 can also be upgraded through a quest line making it comparable to level 54 gear (I think. I never maxed mine cus I'm lazy). Subscriptions are $12.99 for an entry level account which allows 8 characters and no duplicates on a single world, or $14.99 for a standard sub which allows 40 characters and more than one in a single world. All in all, if you're looking for an MMO to try, give this a shot. The trial version actually isn't bad and shows you most of the leveling of the game. It doesn't show you, however, the raiding and such as far as I know. Definitely give this a shot if you're an MMO fanatic or just want to try something new. The playerbase is one of the most helpful towards newcomers I've seen probably ever. I'd try to avoid Cactuar though, as it's gotten slightly more toxic than I would like.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn takes place in the continent of Eorzea, on the planet Hydaelyn who shares it's name with the Mother Cystal, who will guide you throughout your adventures as the Warrior of Light. The game starts you off as an adventurer with an unknown background and are sent to talk to the Adventurer's Guild in hopes of something to do. You will start off in one of the three main City-states; Ul'dah-the desert city that houses some of the richest and poorest people in Eorzea, Limsa Lominsa-the port city that houses expirates and peopl who love the sea, and Gridania-the forest city filled with people who love the enviornment and the spirits which inhabit our world. Which city you start in will be determine by your class, that you can change later on in the game, meaning that you can level all 13 classes to level 60 (the current max level) all on the same character. These classes are mostly iconic to the Final Fantasy franchise, with new and familiar ways to play them.

In terms of an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) FFXIV hits it out of the park. I am an very experienced MMORPG player having played games such as SWTOR, TERA, Guildwars 2 and Wildstar to name af ew of the more popular ones and coming from 7 years of World of Warcraft. FFXIV, while not completely unlike World of Warcraft, is vastly different. I will mainly be using World of Warcraft as a comparison as it is the game i have the most experience with playing as well as it being the most popular MMORPG atm. Like stated earlier in FFXIV you can play mulitple classes if not all the classes, if you really want to which is different thatn World of Warcraft. In WoW you progress with one character until it becomes stale and you must do everything all over again. In FFXIV, your progression is made with the character rather than the class you are representing, meaning that if I get tired of playing a Summoner and I switch to a Dragoon, I will have lost no progress in the mainstory, any of my achievments or titles or anything else along those lines. The only thing i have to do is level my Dragoon up to whatever level I so desire. If I realize Dragoon isn't for me, I can simply switch back to my Summoner (same level as it was before I switched) completely free or try out a new class all together and keep my progress for both Summoner and Dragoon so I can return later.

While I could spend all day talking about this game and all the features it has, it's time for some Pro's and Con's, since unfortunelty this game isn't for everyone.

Pro's
-Hands down the best story that I have every seen in an MMORPG, it will not only keep you captivated but it also puts you as the center of attention, which is different than how other games such as World of Warcraft do it.
-Class system is amazing for someone who wants to try multiple different classes without wanting to re-roll their characters or make alts, it is actually encouraged you try and play all the classes and see what one works for you.
-While not the most graphic amazing game, it will certainly blow a lot of games out of the water. FFXIV just looks stunning if you take a second to enjoy all the great features this game has like dynamic weather, awesome backdrops and a pretty good character creation page.
-Crafting in this game is hands down the best I have ever seen in an MMORPG. Some people level one battle class up to max level and then focus the remainder of their time playing crafting and gathering classes. Whiel some games make these activities a side thing, FFXIV makes them classes all on their own and completely viable to spend all your time and money just working with these classes.
-You absolutely cannot talk about a Final Fantasy game without talking about the music that goes with it. The music in this game is fantastic in every regard. If you are a music nut you will die for some of the sound tracks in this game.
-Finally, this game gets tons of content periodically in patches. The time between patches is roughly 2-3 months at a time (which sounds like heaven if you come from WoW) and each patch is pack full with fresh new content and things to do (and not selfie cams and twitter...)

Con's
-Although the story in this game is amazing it is a very story motivated game and as such may not interest some people. There is no way around the Main Story Quests (MSQ) in thsi game, you have to do them to unlock the content. Although you can technically rush through all the dialogue and skip all the cinematics, you will be missing a huge part of what makes this game great.
-While the end game raids are all fun, they are not what a raider from WoW would expect. Each major content patch (X.0 X.2, X.4) they will introduce 4 new bosses in the existing raid. At the start of every expansion (well we only have Heavensward and A Realm Reborn to go off of atm) they introduce a new raid with 4 bosses, and like I said every major content patch adds 4 new bosses to that raid, which if you come from wow can be a bit bland. Although I think these fights are great I can also see how some people would not like this.
-Lack of class customization. This game does not have class specilization like WoW or SWTOR do. If I am playing a Dragoon and I see a Dragoon right next to me at the same level, we are going to have the exact same abilities. This feature is kind of made up from the fact that you can be all classes but it doesn't really. That beign said its not terrible not picking talents and whatnot, its just a cool feature that isn't there for reasons that make sense (no cookie-cutter builds or best paths)
-The grind. While no where near as bad as a Korean MMORPG this game has a really really long leveling grind. I basically split the leveling process into 3 major steps. The 1-50 leveling which is made up of the A Realm Reborn story and learning your class and whatnot. This step was made easier when Heavensward launched as they made MSQ give double xp. Not terrible but kinda lengthy. Next is the 2.1-2.55 leveling experience which is by far the worst part of this game. Once you hit level 50 and complete the main story you then enter something similar to a post story. This post story will set up the stage for the Heavensward expansion but is completely manditory and very very VERY slow. If you haven't bought Heavensward at this point you will get 0 exp and if you have bought Heavensward you will probably get one level, maybe. The 2.X series probably takes around 20 hours all together to complete and during said time you will feel like you aren't getting anything (exp wise) but will get little gear upgrades. The final step is the Heavensward part 50-60, I know this is technically a review for A Realm Reborn, but I will talk about it anyways. This step is probably the most enjoyable as you will be introduced with a new story and a new enviornment along with some new chracters. The Heavensward story is fantastic, but you have to slog through the post story to get there.

Those are the major things about this game, obviously there are tons more things I could say but to keep this from being a novel, I will leave the review here. Overall this game is a great buy and any MMORPG player should at least try it out. Some important things to note are that there is a free trial if anyone wants to try it before they buy, you will get 14 days to play the game with a level cap of 20. Also another important note is that if you buy this product on Steam you will be forced to buy every expansion after on Steam, which some people dislike since it regularly goes on sale other places and rarely goes on sale through Steam. On the bright side, you can use your Steam wallet to pay for the monthly fee so it has its ups and downs. Finally, the Square Enix website can be a pain in the ♥♥♥♥ sometimes but don't let that discourage you, this is a great game and I hope to see you all in Eorzea! <3 Sarris Wolf, Behemoth

Very entertaining game. I find myself coming back to this mmo after years of trying to find others. Was a big WoW players and after finding this game i keep coming back for the game play, beautiful graphics, and fun community. SE has good updates that keep players interested. While actually trying to grind for end game gear is rather long its well worth the grind. I would recommend this game for those MMOers out there that are looking to pass time with a pretty game to look at :D

One of the best MMORPGS since The days of vanilla WoW and Everquest II. One of the things that sets this game apart from current mmo's is the idea that your character is a person just like you. What I mean by that is that your character is not defined as a Mage or warrior, but rather someone who has learned how to be a Mage or warrior; in FFXIV, you can have one character that masters all classes and all professions.
Professions (crafting classes) are very unique in that each crafting profession gets skills to help them in the world, for example, the fisherman profession around level 10 gets a sneak skill so they can traverse the world without being attacked. The fighting classes are separated into decouples of war, and decouples of magic; each with gear specified uniquely for it. The fighting classes include gladiator, pugalist, marauder, lancer, archer and rogue. The magic classes include the thaumaturge, the conjurer, and the arcanist.
What is so incredibly awesome about FFXIV is how all of these classes can be combined with another to create a more powerful and unique class. For example, you can create a paladin by getting your character to level 30 with a gladiator, and getting to level 15 with the conjurer, to create a slight mix of the two.
This game will forever be in my heart as the most immersive MMORPG and the mmo that has truly been worth a monthly payment. If I talked about everything in FFXIV, I'd be here all day typing, but in short, if you are questioning the value of this game, give the trial a try and you will quickly find out if you are a fan. Specs wise, the game runs beautifully, and for a game made quite a while ago, it graphically has withstood the test of time. I would recommend this game to any gamer who is searching for a great community, a great immersive experience, and a great breathe of fresh mmo air.

Bought this game and been leveling my first class up (an arcanist). The game is really fun and enjoyable, lots of different things to do even at low level: Main storyline, leveling roulette (basically daily random dungeon with extra xp), guildhests, levequests, sidequests.

I'd have to say after getting two job classes to 60 and geared for the end game raid [Weeping City of Mhach] this MMO defenitly has something for everyone. There's two pages of dungeons, 8 and 24 man raids, trial bosses, visually appealing, very helpful community, and most important it is not Pay to Win cash shop items are cosmetic. It has a captivatiing story, that follows the general cross game lore very well, as well as a very unique skill system allowing classes to use skills from other classes you may have.

Legit best MMORPG that you could ever have! so much content, i still havent finished after 507 hours of play time lol
Good on Square enix for making this game work despite its rough launch, it has turned out to be a very popular mmo.
World population is high, and plus dungeons and raids are OP at and game in HVW.

everyone definitely needs to add this to their library and clock their life into this game.

The best MMO. No doubt about it. What SE has built here has surpassed my expectations greatly. As a former FFXI player, I can say this game lives up to and exceeds the standard set by that game years ago. There is so much to do you will never be bored. 14/10
