Although the game squarely qualifies as old now, I couldn't resist buying it given how much I played it years ago, and how powerful the memories of it.

The story offers a simple and straightforward red thread to follow for completion, but leaves so much room for exploration, choices and personal characterization (or lack thereof) that it actually allows many replays without getting boring.
The minigames are of course a bit repetitive, but that's not something that ever bothers me, especially since they're based on rhythm and reactivity. Only the slow sailing across the map got annoying after a while, and that's a feature; you're NOT supposed to cross over the whole ocean without pause or action.

Basically, this game is a blast for any player who likes writing their own story.

One day, I'll publish the epic chronicles of the dreaded legendary pirate who attacked and took over the whole Spanish Armada with his lone but glorious war canoe Croustibat! :D

Remember playing the original a lot more than i played this one before i got bored. Yes it looks better but the interface is clumsy and the mouse pointer sometimes refuses certain menu choices.

I guess its not really the game's fault that gameplay feels so outdated.
The original is ancient and player expectations are simply much higher in 2016.

For the truly nostalgic it may have bring something but for all new players i'm afraid they will be disappointed. With this is mind, i have to give it a thumbs down, although it hurts my memories of distant pirate days.

If there was ever a game that needed another reboot, it's this one! The game is a fantastic trip down memory lane, but after a decade, Pirates! shows its age. A combination of losing my adolescent imagination and technological advancements means that the game doesn't feel anywhere near as immersive as I once remember it feeling. 12 year old me could play this game for hours on end and feel like a Pirate on the Spanish Main - 24 year old me can only take a few hours before I find myself bored.

The truth is though, the ambitious Pirates! never was immersive. The game is fun, but the charm and novelty wear off far sooner than they should. Within just a couple of hours, you'll have likely done everything the game really has to offer aside from finishing the main storyline of finding your missing family members and eliminating the other pirates.

For the price, you cannot go wrong. However, the game doesn't have enough diversity in its mechanics, is not at all challenging and simply doesn't offer enough to keep you interested for dozens of hours like other Sid Meier games do.

A joy to play. The main plotline is long and tedious, which is why you ignore it and go muster an armada to beat up the French. That's what being a pirate is all about!

Pirates! is an experience, but don't go in with high expectations. Gameplay is a series of minigames, which are fun but ultimately shallow. The sooner you accept the mechanical flaws, the sooner you can go back to raiding port towns and dancing at social balls, AKA the good things in life.

Note: The default resolution is crap, but it's possible to hack in HD http://www.wsgf.org/dr/sid-meiers-pirates-2004

It'S an oldie but a goldie. If like me you played this back in the olden days and enjoyed it... guess what it's still a lot of fun today. Sure depth wise it has it's limits, but I still greatly enjoy trying to conquer the whole map or Roleplay as some famous Pirate or what not.

Good Game, imho timeless.

A fun remake of the 1987 classic game! All of the elements of the original are present and updated. It's easy for beginners to play immediately, and the difficulty can be adjusted for seasoned gamers.
