Revisit the Madness in Layers of Fear: Inheritance on August 2, 2016

We’re proud to present Layers of Fear: Inheritance, a unique piece of DLC which expands the plot from Layers of Fear and tells the story of the painter’s daughter coming back to her childhood home to face her past. Can she forgive her father, or will she resent all that has happened? Relive her experiences and witness the full scope of the tragedy that has swallowed up the family.

Game features:
- A completely new narrative experience that expands the story of Layers of Fear
- Explore the painter’s house from his daughter’s perspective
- Multiple endings based on how you play the game
- A return to the terrifying and psychedelic experience players loved from the base game

The DLC will also include an update for the base game with tons of fixes for the base game (judder, I'm looking at you). The price of the DLC will be set at $4.99

[EDIT]
As there were some voices of concern about the update fixes - yes the base game will be updated regardless of whether you bought the DLC or not.

See you again in the manor on August 2nd!

About This Game

You take another drink as the canvas looms in front of you. A light flickers dimly in the corner. You’ve created countless pieces of art, but never anything like…this. Why haven’t you done this before? It seems so obvious in retrospect. Your friends, critics, business partners—soon, they’ll all see. But something’s still missing…

You look up, startled. That melody… Was that a piano? It sounded just like her… But, no—that would be impossible. She’s gone. They’re all gone.
Have to focus. How long has it taken to get to this point? Too long, but it doesn’t matter. There will be no more distractions. It’s almost finished. You can feel it. Your creation. Your Magnum Opus.

Dare you help paint a true Masterpiece of Fear? Layers of Fear is a first-person psychedelic horror game with a heavy focus on story and exploration. Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a vast and constantly changing Victorian-era mansion. Uncover the visions, fears and horrors that entwine the painter and finish the masterpiece he has strived so long to create.

Game Features:
• Psychedelic horror – A sense of insanity means each turn of the camera may completely change the look of your surroundings.
• Victorian setting – Explore a game world inspired by masterpiece paintings, architecture and décor from the 19th century.
• Original and classic art – Numerous pieces of original art and music flesh out the story and environment.
• Story-focused exploration – Only through exploring the environment can you uncover the details of the painter’s dark and tragic past.

Ever wondered what it would be like to step into a macabre portrait conjured up by a dejected and demented mind? Layers of Fear explores this curiosity while providing a grim ride that responds and changes to the actions of the player. The disquiet atmosphere is aptly paired with a haunting soundtrack; generating a bone-chilling environment that accentuates the unstable psyche of the protagonist. The Unity engine is also used with impressive prowess as entire rooms melt, hallways distort and furniture levitates in the air, keeping the game visually interesting and adding to the suspense of the story. The baleful painting becomes a little tattered from mediocre voice acting and dialogue, eventually exhibiting a large rip in its canvas, courtesy of the rather unfulfilling endings that are presented.

If you're looking to embrace your artistic side, or just crave to be frightened, this is one gallery showing you won't want to miss.

Either this game is horribly optimized or I have a slow computer, and judging by how well everything else on steam does on my rig, it seems that the problem is with the game. It just stutters like wild, even at the lowest setting, resolution, and windowed mode, it's barely playable. I've tried numerous fixes and had hoped this would be something the devealopers would've looked into before publishing the game but since the newest DLC is released and the problem is still there, it doesn't look like there's any hope.

In short, only buy if you think your rig is insanely powerful with one of the best graphics cards around. It's a shame because this game looked so good.

So the games first play through is not long. 4-5hrs. Which I wish it was longer though, Im not going to spoil anything but you need to play it a few times. This game is awesome! Reminds me of Amnesia The Dark Decent. Its a great game with some amazing visuals. Good suspense and surprising scares. I enjoyed this game very much! Definetly recommend it!

I would recommend this game to anyone who is looking for their first horror game. It's a game that can be played multiple times without getting boring. There are lots to explore, a beautiful atmosphere, fantastic endings, the jump scares are good, but not out of your mind scary, and the story is relatively easy to follow.

**HEADPHONES NEEDED TO ENHANCE GAMEPLAY**

One of the top jump-scare/horror games I have ever played. Every door is full of NOPE. Will purchase their DLC as well if I can ever grow an iron sack.

StoryProsCons
Main StoryYou are a painter who is trying to finish his greatest work
Collecting... the script!Gather items and letters to understand what is going on
EndingsThere is multiple endings you can get depending on what items you picked up on your wild adventures! It's pretty vague how close you are to getting one ending over the other

ConceptProsCons
Mind GamesThe environment is constantly shifting, unlocking and locking doors, and you are scrambling around to find out what to do
Suspense and HorrorEverything about the game tries to lure you into a very focused state so that it can smash you with a jump scareA bit too heavily reliant on jump scares...

GameplayProsCons
InteractionYou move doors and other handles by moving around your mouse while holding left click downWinding up some stuff felt a bit weird to do with a mouse
PuzzlesPuzzles relay on paying attention to the environment to figure out the key to the solution

Overall, absolutely brilliant. The jump scares will certainly make you jump in the first half of the game, the later stage you tend to get used to it. Some of the sequences and effects in the game are truly breathtaking. As for length of the game, I got 3.7 hours out of it. but didn't see everything so a bit of replay in it, plus still need to do the DLC. An absolute must to have a good pair of headphones, can't beat having that jump scare sound booming in your ear. the rest of the sound effects are great too. If you like horror this is a no brainer, enjoy it for what it is, t it's an amazing experience.

Absolutely loved this game. Did not think I would be so into it. The atmosphere and sound are top notch. playing in a dark room in the middle of the night, especially on a stormy one, you will have chills down your spine just from the sounds.

Without spoiling anything the story is weird but it fits the bill, if one would like you can take its meaning a little deeper. I think the developers left alot to the imagination on purpose because it adds your own personal level of terror to the situation.

The scares are of a psychological nature, ones that are jumpy fade in and out, you never really get a chance to get used to them or tire of them which makes playing through the entire game easy without dragging it out. Game length is perfect for the situation.

Game ran great in ultra on a AMD FX 8580 and an nvidia gtz 780. little choppy at parts and some frame lagging but otherwise perfect,

Cant wait to see what else these developers have in store for us. I'm not too keen on walking simulators but this one definitely has the ability to change my tone. give it a shot!

The quest for an equal to Amnesia: The Dark Descent continues.

However I did find the "game" , if you can even call it that, quite enjoyable. I see a lot of quips about it being a walking simulator. Unfortunately that is not far from the truth. I will start off with where the game succeeds before I will list its failures.

The graphics for a B game are actually very nice. I had a fun time checking out the paintings. They also did a very good job with the atmosphere. It did indeed create a very creepy feeling. I also found the story somewhat enjoyable and intersting enough for me to try and get to the next step which is all you really need. Could it have been better? Definitely, but it was good enough. The music was decent and the jump scares were good (although few).

Now where the game utterly fails is it's description of it being a game at all. There really isn't anything to do as far as puzzles are concerned. There isn't any way to fail really unless you just stop "playing" . There is no tension where you must hurry and do this or that will happen or hurry up and collect this before that happens or hurry up and figure out this or else you will go no where in the story. It also lacked quite a bit of VO which could have made the story a bit more intriguing. I think these are important elements not only to a horror game but to a game in general. I mean, can you really call it a game if there is nothing to figure out? Now before anyone starts to whine I will say that yes, near the end when you collect the last two pieces of the six that there is something that you can sorta say are puzzles but they are so inane that I probably would have put something like that at the very beginning of the game rather than at the end.

So my search continues for a horror game as well put together as Dark Descent. The only one that has come close in the last few years is Outlast. I am not sure if I could say this game is worth $20. I got it for $8 and if you can get it for that then I think it is worth it. I did like the overall effort though, so I will get it a thumbs up although I wish Steam went to a star rating system to be more accurate.

Layers of fear is an exploration of a deteriorating mind of a once genius painter. He had (or maybe still has) a wife and a daughter, but his main focus is not the family, but his yet-to-be-completed best painting - his Magnum Opus. You delve deep into the everchanging coridors of an old mansion to finish the masterpiece and simultaneously uncover hints to the tragic story of this man's life.

Pros
replayability value of this game is high.
3 different endings
Excellent voice acting
music and sound effects
Graphics is a beauty
jumpscares right at the moment and NOT MUCH

Cons
- The game was confusing at times

For what it is, outstanding. Very creepy, unsettling and beautifully detailed environment. Music and sound effects are top notch. Engaging story. Yes there are some cheap jump scares and the voice acting isn't the greatest but I think it's well worth the $20 price tag.
