If you ever played the first two games in the Dungeon Siege series and enjoyed them, do not... I repeat, do not buy this game. It is in no way shape or form even close to the original. Other than that, its' a pretty O.K. semi- ordinary RPG taken over by a quasi- normal Japanese CO.

I originally played through this game on console in local co-op, and now I wanted to try out the DLC. Turns out you need to play through quite a lot of the main campaign to even get to the DLC which kind of sucks, but I found the game good enough to replay. It's even better in single-player actually because of the annoying camera issues in co-op, and there's also quite a bit of dialogue which slows down the pace.

DS3 is nothing like its predecessors; the loot is kind of non-relevant, RPG elements are dumbed down, the world is much more linear, and the main theme isn't even in the game. But it's still a solid ARPG with a good combat system, good music and beautiful environments. The story and the lore is super well written and there's a lot of it, all with good voice acting too. Too bad there's no sequel in sight.

Oh my God the controls. Oh my God the UI.
What do you want to not ♥♥♥♥ up when you make an action RPG? Controls. And UI. Among other things.
Position yourself and press E to perform the most frequent basic actions you have to do every few seconds. Jesus F Christ. Why?

Having played and loved the first two Dungeon Siege games this one came as quite a shock. It's a very different style of game and that's not in itself a bad thing, but the way it has been implemented here is.

As far as the good things go, the combat is excellent and a much better system (imo) than the previous games. Characters actually have some story to them, although the banter is not as good as DS2. The art, sound and graphics are also very good. And, oddly, your choices do actually have some relevance.

Unfortunately the rest is not so good. Major things like the camera, the (lack of)path/journey, the skillsets, the inventory, the loot, the overall story (the sub stories and characters are fine) and the lack of playable characters really detracts from the game. Especially the loot. Finding uniques doesn't actually matter, the stats are cryptic and you will most often replace items every 5 minutes. Characters are also horribly imbalanced. Anjali and Lucas are what you would expect, but Reinhart is a tactical nuke the further you progress and Katarina is weaker than wet paper. Why? Because of stats. Agility (Dex) which is crucial to Katarina gets worse as you level wheras Will (Int) remains the same which is crucial for Reinhart's skill spamming. Katarina is also not a good AoE character but Reinhart is all about AoE.

I could ramble on for ages but what it comes down to is this. There are plenty of other games you could buy and play and be much happier with. If you really want to get this, do it when it is on sale as this is a once through kinda game with 0 replayability other than trying out each character or playing in coop.

The graphics are fairly pretty, the gameplay is solid and the optimisation & stability is great.

Why do I give it a thumbs down then?

The story is BORING. Not just boring, but BORING in capital letters. After only 8h I'm already 3/4 finished yet nothing interesting happened and character development is quasi-absent, in the end you just can't get yourself to bother about the plot or the characters.

Because of that I stopped playing, farming for badger hides in a mmorpg feels more epic than this story...

After all the negative reviews, I started playing the game expecting nothing but with an open mind. If this was a stand-alone game it would probably okay. But they made it under the Dungeon Siege Franchise and they really messed it up. The first two games were all about starting out with nothing but customizing your characters looks and capabilities as time went on. You were the character, it was an avatar of you...
With this newest installment to the franchise it is story-driven like The Witcher series. If you like The Witcher you might like this. But if you wanted something more like the two previous games you're gonna have a bad time. The two previous were more like a mix between Diablo and Neverwinter nights, while this seems like a bad Witcher Copy-cat.

But if you haven't played the two previous games, this game is not bad at all. It's only bad if you have played the previous ones.

Ok Hack'n'Slash, weak RPG, uninteresting story with incoherent characters - Every major boss in the game basically murders entire citys because "The Legion was mean to them", but, when you beat them, they turn kind and thoughtfull...

Some of the enemies (especially towards the end) look really good and graphically the game is pleasing.

I would recommend it if you like top down, fantasy RPGs and have a friend to play with. Otherwise, it's really not good.

-> I finished the campaign as a knight, with a gamepad and solo.
