Some people mentioned that the art in Tiny Guardians resembled Kingdom Rush quite a bit, which was most likely intentional on the part of the developers. The game's mechanics were still fairly unique, of course; it didn't take the formula wholesale. That's something this game did. But cribbing from something doesn't necessarily mean your work is going to be bad, and Alien Robot Monsters is a pretty good title that adds to that formula. The game starts off in a colony-era sci-fi setting, where a contingent of space marines have been deployed to investigate an inhabitable planet. Unfortunately, you aren't the only ones attempting to colonize it, and shortly after landing the troop finds themselves attacked by...well, you read the title. Time to defend yourselves.

If you've played Kingdom Rush you'll get the hang of this pretty quick, and it might not jump out at you at first. You start with only one tower, a Depot of rookies who are armed with simple machine guns. Not long after you get the Tech Lab, who can fire slower bursts of lightning for bigger damage and armor-piercing. These are your two core units, which you can build into a ton of other things, depending on what upgrades you buy on them. Adding an extra soldier to the depot for example, allows you to make it into a marine barracks, your first blocker unit, while increasing range lets you make it into an outpost, a more straight tower upgrade. Likewise, you can make the tech lab into the science lab, a more powerful AOE tower, or the satellite uplink, which shoots at one enemy for high damage, and has infinite range. Every tower has three particular upgrades to it, letting even the earlier ones feel like they have a lot of impact while fully kitted out. The game also has a fast forward button, which it's cousin lacks, although that's in exchange for any hero units, which you won't find here.

That all said, there are some problems. By the end of the game you'll have so many paths you can take towers down that you might find yourself forgetting what upgrades are necessary to get the one you want. You can look that up in levels, but it's still a bit bothersome at times. Speaking of upgrades, one un-intuitive thing is that while most don't carry on to the next stage, some do: adding an extra man to the depot is advised even if you don't want a barracks, since the outpost will have only two members in it otherwise, and the tech lab's range upgrade extends to the science lab. By the end of the game I also found that I had so many options it was difficult to discern what would be useful, since enemies can have both armor (blocks bullet weapons) or shields (blocks science weapons), and can come in some difficult combinations. There were some I just never used much. The upgrades you can buy with stars also feel a bit lackluster, and maybe not as helpful as they were in Kingdom Rush.

Aesthetic-wise I find the game quite nice. The B-Movie inspired enemies all look appealing and satisfying to blow into scrap, while your attacks have some real punch, particularly at the end. Every tower has voice clips for when they're built and upgraded, which have a bit of that old RTS charm to them. The game doesn't take itself very seriously, which you could probably expect by the title.

I beat the campaign, did the optional levels, and unlocked all the achievements in about twenty-five hours, so it's comparatively a bit short. But ARM is well-paced, and constantly gives you new things to play around with, as opposed to so other games in the genre where you unlock your full arsenal and still have most of it to go through. If you've done everything or nearly so in Kingdom Rush and want more like it, or just want something different to it, I think it'd be a fine addition to your library.

If steam allowed neutral reviews this would be one of them.

Everything is fine (nothing to write home about but decent) until you get to the map when you first try the drones, I do not like the way the work, where I am unable to make them guard a specific path leading to frustration. Most levels look identical, but thumbs up for trying something new, that is developing large amount of towers from 2 base ones.

A mobile TD game that has serious issues with providing too little information to decide correctly.

This is yet another mobile tower defense game. You can tell by the fact that you cannot play with a keyboard, only with a mouse, and that the UI is huge.

But that wouldn't be a big problem in itself.

Imagine that you're playing a complicated version of rock-paper-scissors with more elements. Say "armor-shield-groups-robots-grenades-stun-fire-lightning-laser". But there are two problems:

First, no one explained the rules to you properly. Was it stun trumps armor and robots, laser trumps shields, grenades trump groups but only if they are non-robotic? Have fun figuring it out without any real feedback.

Second, many attack elements are hidden behind others (the game has only two basic towers which you then transform into completely different ones, quite an interesting idea) and there are blind upgrade paths that silently set you back. Was it grenades upgrade to fire, lightning to laser, but don't forget to skip the side upgrade of a higher range or it will be lost and you won't have enough money? You must uncover and remember rules such as: The extra soldier transfers to the outpost but after that it is lost. The extra range transfers to the science lab, but the double chain doesn't transfer to the laser.

In October 2015 the developer promised to update the in-game descriptions to include this information but it's still missing. So your only option is to guess.

Ultimately there are too many good TD games to bother with this one. If the developer updated the in-game description, I would give it my reluctant recommendation, but as it is:

Not recommended.

A nice tower defense game with a complex technology/upgrade tree. Each tower has their unique (dis)advantages, which makes it a challenge to find out which combinations make sense.

A rare gem of a tower defense game. ARM uses a similar tower defense formula that was made popular by games like Kingdom Rush, but expands on it with a large tech tree, large variation of enemies, an almost "starcraft" like sci fi universe, and wraps it up with solid graphics, music, and interface. Want a cherry on that sundae? ARM is rare again for its ability to actually be difficult. The tech tree is so large and so varied that you'll find yourself strategically planning your build orders differently for each scenario.

This goes along some of my favorite tower defense games of all time. Excellent amount of content at the $6 retail price, with exceptional replay value for the genre. I'm a fan.

Very tight and fun tower defense game. The difficulty curve is reasonable and it moves fast enough that failure aren't too frustrating. You can't beat the game's value for the price.

This is a great tower defense game, one of the best I've played (and I've played a lot) with a huge variety of tower upgrades and strategies.
It also works beautifully on Linux, and the developer is friendly and responsive to questions. All in all, a must-buy for tower defense fans.

I find this to be a relaxing tower defense game. I'd say it has 20 hours of content to play through all the way once the first time. That's what it took for me anyways, and I didn't succeed at every level the first time I played them.

The music of some levels seems a bit reminiscent in parts to the old "Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan" in a space voyage-like theme. Blue marines shooting at the robots is reminiscent of old school starcraft.

If you like tower defense, I'd say this is one to pick up for sure. If you want a fairly low-key game you can pull out, play a little bit, and then extricate yourself this is also a really great choice for anyone.

If you get stuck on a level, just try something different. There actually are different ways of beating the harder levels, despite some people thinking otherwise. I've come back and replayed this a few times, so I know.

The other big complaint some people have is that the harder levels are not all at the end. They are sprinkled in different places in the game.

I write this in english to reach more ppl, but that's not my main language, feel free to let me know if I do some errors.

  • Ambience and music♥ are brilliant
  • Lot of fun and jokes, aliens and spaces marins are really fun
  • Directly immersive, start the game and play, no 9'943 things to understand before having fun
  • A ton of upgrade. After each level you earn from 1 to 3 stars if you win. And you can spend them on a upgrade tree. You can reset the tree and spend your stars in another way to try a different strategy for a specific level.
  • You can transform your towers into marines basecamp and have soldiers on the battlefield
  • Really a lot little nice idea who make this game great
  • Polished, bug free
  • It cost only 6$

I totally recommend this game for any Tower Defense lover. If you like too sci-fi theme it's a must to have.

Here is a 15min video you can see an entire level. Don't believe this level is easy like that the first time you play without next level upgrades. It's just to show you a bit what contain this game and how it look.

A fun little tower defense with more than just static towers. You can command units or change your towers into something completely different.
All kinds of crazy things are possible here.

(FIXED): One thing I would like to say, though, is, that it would be great, if it had audio sliders for music and SFX, so that we could adjust their differences the way we like it. Just a minor complaint.

I'm really enjoying this game - the multitude of tower upgrades give this TD game a unique selling point. It's also got a lot in common with Kingdom Rush and that's no bad thing, e.g. in-lane warriors, missile strikes and para-troopers are similar to KR's knights, meteor strike and re-enforcements, but it's all sufficiently different that I feel that this is money well spent.

The pacing is nice, perhaps a little slow, but some of the linked tower upgrades are fantastic and the pacing might be required to introduce you to them. Linked upgrades mean that you don't just build, say, a flame-tower. Instead you build a MG-tower, upgrade its range, which unlocks a ranger tower. Upgrade the ranger tower with rockets and that finally unlocks the flamer. It's a neat system and reasonably logical so you don't have too much to remember. But it adds flexibility to your strategy overall.

If you like TD generally and you like Kingdom Rush especially, you'll love this - it's slickly done and dirt cheap for the quality on offer.

A few videos have noted that there's no option to change music/effects volumes, but you can at least togglel each on/off.

What a lovely TD game! It offers great variance, a resonable challenge, and hours of fun.
The game has a fairly complex tower structure where new upgrades/types are added continously. Although I was tearing my hair out trying to remember where the thing I needed was (always in a wary stressfull situation), this is also what adds variety.
The game play is standard TD but with very different levels with different constrains and challenges. I was never bored.
The graphics are good and clear (love that the ammo chasing drop from the towers) without any fuss or overly detailed. This is about beating those robots!
I liked that I didn't have to go back and replay levels to earn upgrades. That seems to be a rule in many games.
It is not an easy game but at no point did I feel it was hopeless. I always felt I could solve the levels, if I just tried one more time... And that is exactly haw hard a game should be.

This is a summary of my review video, which I encourage you to watch if you are looking for a more in-depth review.

Attack of the Alien Robot Monsters is a futuristic tower defense game with a 16 bit look and feel, where you fight against hordes of Robots in order to save your colony. The story does exactly what it needs to, tying a purpose and progression with the enemies and troops to the game. It is more minimalistic, but fits in well to the game. The interface is sleek and simplistic, One minor issue I had was that you could only increase the time of the round x1, where it would have been nice to have a x2 option. Another small gripe would be that there was no way to tell what type of creatures would be coming up in the next round. It was a bit annoying, as it didn't give me time to prepare for what was coming, and increased my chances of having to redo the level not out of enjoyment, but out of frustration. The two most important factors to consider in a tower defense game are the level design and the tower defense layout, which go hand in hand with each other.

Level Design;
This was done extremely well in this game. Magnificent, even! They did an excellent job of designing each level so that it challenged the player, and accommodated the increase in towers and attack strength as you progressed through the game. I never felt that I was replaying the same levels over again, which is hard to find in tower defense games.

Tower Design;
This game requires a certain knowledge of what each tower does, and a tactical knowledge of where to place them. The towers are interchangeable, and as you increase in level, if you want to, you can change the towers to a completely different style. There are large tech trees in this game, with a large variety of different types of towers that you can change to to battle against the different types of enemies. Each individual tower also has a decent selection of upgrades that do an excellent job of increasing the power of those towers.

There are marine style barracks and outposts, some of which are more powerful than others, which i go over more in my video review. There are also more tech lab style outposts, which offer air assault units (which I found to be largely useless due to poor AI). The variety of attack/ dps/ armor units give more options to defend against different attacks. While there are towers that are stronger than others as the game does suffer from a power creep issue. Although it still comes down to the right placement of the towers on the map. The enemy offers a large, diverse variety of units, that have certain buffs that you need to be ready for.

Bosses
The bosses are also large and varied, and may require you to replay them. The enemy troops synergize well with each other, more than your towers do with each other. Each level is based on a 3 star rating; the stars can be used to purchase upgrades. You need to have an understanding of tower defense games when you play this game, as it does not start at a noob level, but has a higher entry difficulty bar. The game starts at a moderate level, but quickly increases to a veteran level, then hardcore. You do feel a sense of progression due to this, and the end boss really requires a tactical eye rather than just relying on the skills you have acquired up to that point. The game never wasted my time, which I appreciated.

Summary
At the end of the day, the towers may have some issues, but the enemies and levels that you face rotate so that you constantly feel challenged, and keeps you on your toes. The balance between the ascetics, the gameplay, the mechanics, and how it all works together there were no issues. I didn't feel like it wasted my time, or that the hours spent in this game were for nothing. I can absolutely recommend this game for those who have a base knowledge of the tower defense genre. There is a tactical element required for this game, and this game shines in that respect.

This is one of the easiest recommendations I'll have to give. Alien Robot Monsters (ARM) is a really addictive tower defence game.

The goal of each mission is simple. Your base is invaded by swarms of enemy robots and you must fend them off by strategically placing various military towers and tech buildings in the area. The enemies come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as you'd expect from any tower defence game, each having their own strengths and weaknesses. Likewise, each of your buildings is made to deal with a certain enemy type better than with others. Getting overrun by hordes of weak enemies? Get yourself some mortar towers. Having trouble with armoured tanks? Build an orbital laser. And so on.

After completing each mission, you get a rating out of 3 stars. If none of the enemies got through your defences, you get full 3 stars. If some went through, you get 1 or 2 stars. If too many get through, you lose the mission. The stars are not just there for you to feel proud, either. They're used as skill points to purchase upgrades to your buildings. Hence there's a lot of incentive to do well on each mission and even a chance to replay the harder missions later in order to get a better rating on those.

Normally there's no way of knowing what sort of enemies to expect in each mission, so the latter missions often require a bit of trial and error and can be quite hard. Regardless, I'm having a blast with the game. Fun gameplay and a great presentation. What more could you want?

If you've ever remotely enjoyed any tower defence games, give this one a try. It's really cheap and affordable despite its high quality.

Great game! Entertaining with a fairly large tower upgrade tree that allows for a great deal of variability and strategy. Static upgrades can be purchased with badge points from winning a match (1-3 points per), and can selecting the right upgrades can mean the difference between winning and losing the next match. Fortunately, you can reset these points any time for free!

The only thing I would like to see added into the game is a statistic on how much damage each tower is outputing. AND it's been added!!!

Buy it. Buy it now!

I was actually really shocked at how awesome this game is. It is a solid defense title, with a quite bit of depth to it.

I would recommend stats being displayed for monsters and towers and maybe an enhanced tutorial. Im still unclear as to whether upgrading other aspects of a tower before upgrading it to a different tower have any effect, or if its just a waste of money. Also memorizing the order for building certain towers it frustrating as well.

With that being, I still think this is a great game and have hope that some updates will be made in the future to address some of these issues.

Overall a solid 8/10 in its current state.
