Nightmare Tide is Now Available!

With the launch of Nightmare Tide, we have breached planar boundaries and together we march, ride, and swim into new realms beyond Telara. This is our first expansion as a free-to-play game, and it’s really exciting to be able to share it with all of you.

We’ve increased our maximum level to 65 and introduced the Mastery system to further customize your character as you venture into the Plane of Water. Explore three massive zones packed with quests and dynamic events, six dungeons, a new Warfront, a new Sliver, and in a few weeks – a new 20-player raid.

The Minions system brings all new collectibles, along with new ways to earn rewards and profit. Mentoring has been expanded and improved to allow players of all levels to play together – low level players can now scale up and play with their friends! That’s right, all players have the opportunity to experience adventures and zone events in the Plane of Water. Meanwhile, Nightmare Rifts bring new and terrifying challenges to every zone in RIFT. Test your skill by fighting unending waves of enemies while racing against the clock!

Of course, this is just the start of the Nightmare Tide era for RIFT! As always, the team will continue to add content, listen to your feedback, and work at making every version of RIFT better than the last. Your contributions and feedback are amazingly important; making RIFT wouldn’t be the same without the community we have and the support you give us.

It’s an amazing time to be playing RIFT, Ascended, so let’s go play! See you on the other side of the Infinity Gate.

RIFT is the perfect World of Warcraft clone. It has everything WoW has:
Same interface, mechanics, professions, auction house, instances, raids, BGs, item naming, controls, addons on Curse, talents, etc,

It also has the additions that WoW has always needed:
- Random Zone Events (constant, running all the time)
- Rifts (which appear randomly and massively accros the map)
- 1 and 2 players dungeons (Chronicles)
- Built-in mechanics that in WoW you need addons (sell grey items, quest guides, etc)
- Instant Adventures, which randomly matches you with a bunch of players and then you keep doing infinitely chosen grinding quests in a zone, giving massive EXP and rewards (the best way to level).

But mostly important it has AN AWESOME CHARACTER CLASS AND ROLE CUSTOMIZATION. It's something like "make your own class and roles":
- Caster DPS-Tank-Healer
- Pure caster DPS
- Caster and Melee DPS
- Caster with Pet DPS and Healer (or just DPS)
- Melee Tank with Healing habilities

Regarding the Free to Play aspect of it: you can completely play the game without ever spending a penny, but a few restrictions:
- You can't sell on the Auction House
- Limited bags (very annoying)
- You will have to grind a lot in order to buy mounts

But I was so hooked the first day that I bought the Classic Collector's Pack, unlocking a lot of extras, plus giving 1 month of Patron, which means 40% additional exp = faster leveling. Also, I WANTED to pay, because I was willing to help Trion. This game DESERVES money. It's polished, addicting and well crafted.

If you want to play WoW but aren't willing for a comeback, RIFT is your game!

Huge F2P MMORPG, if you like an expensive world and lots of choices like different classes that can have multiple specs at the same time, switching on the fly from a tank to a DPS to a support. Huge dynamic open world battles that affect the hole zone and are lots of fun. If you like hundreds of quest and interesting story and dialog this will suit you. You can use addons to tweak the game to your liking even further. Definitely worth a look as its now F2P and not Pay to Win.

This game is incredibly fun, has great graphics, beautiful scenery, mobs, etc.
This is for a fact, not a pay to win game! You can obtain real money currency (gems) with your ingame currency by buying gems off the auction house from other players. I absolutely love this since most MMO's are P2W.
This game is better than Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, and several other mmos. If you don't believe me then try it out yourself!
There are 4 main classes and 37 subclasses which are insanely good. Different skills you can learn, such as Fishing, Outfitting, Butchering and several more!
As the name suggests, there are things call "Rifts" around the world you play on. These rifts start out as a tear which can either turn into a large or small rift. It's basically an event to fight waves of enemies, a boss, and bonus waves for loot. However if a rift is left alone, it sends forces out across the world and takes over areas of the map. A rift lasts 99 minutes though, so it won't completely destroy the world.
All in all I love this game and plan on playing it for a very long time!

4.5/5 RIFT is a free to play MMO with a familiar (Warcraft) feel to it, that does enough to distinguish itself from all the other f2p MMOs out there.

- The class system has been designed with flexibility in mind. Every class has the ability to switch roles, so you could be tanking in a dungeon one minute and doing solo quests as a DPS the next. MMO newbies can play with preset skill-trees to avoid being overwhelmed, whilst MMO veterans can tinker away with custom builds to their heart's content.

- Dynamic zone events. You can be quietly questing in a zone, when suddenly, rifts open up spawning mobs and eventually, the event boss. This encourages everyone in a zone to band together to close rifts and take down the boss, which is great fun.

- How you choose to level up is really flexible. Do quests, instant adventures (kill/fetch quests with other players), zone events or dungeons.

- RIFT is still actively being developed. Version 3.0 is due soon (end of Otober 2014)

- Once you hit lvl 50, a new skill tree system (planar attunement) opens up, offering more customisation. A special set of dungeons (Chronicles) designed for 1-2 playes also becomes accessible from lvl 50+.

- If want to try dungeons (designed for 5 players) but haven't got guild friends to join with, you can join a dungeon queue that will automatically match 5 random players together. (Note: the wait time depends on your role, it seems that tanks are in short supply, followed by healers)

- Quests can get a bit grindy sometimes; many are of the "collect 20 of .." or "kill 12 of ..." variety. However, occasionally you do come across more fun/unusual/interesting/innovative quests, lifting the game above your standard MMO.

- Some zones are not well optimized and FPS will suddenly drop from a smooth 60fps down to 20fps.

- Free players can buy stuff from the auction house but can't sell (although there is a trade chat channel available). It is possible however to use in-game currency (plat) to buy something called REX that another player has paid for using real cash. The REX can be used to unlock the ability to sell in the auction house.

Recommendation: If you want to experience the fun and familiarity of an MMO like Warcraft, but don't want to pay a monthly subscription, then RIFT will provide exactly what you are looking for. It is a well-designed, flexible game ... and did I mention it was free?

After 1k+ hours of playing this game and what I've experienced nowadays as an endgame semi-hardcore player. I can no longer recommend it as the game starts to become downhill and the P2W aspects are rising up lately where it becomes unfair and unbalances the progression paces with the F2P players simply because most of the powerful gears or BiS can be simply obtained through buying of "Gambling Lockboxes" or paying vast amounts of real money for their "Bundles". Although it's still possible to get them through working for currencies in order to buy them or raiding should you pursue PVE gearing or PVPing for vice versa. But it takes ages in order for you to get its desired full sets in order to advance on the next tier progressions. In conclusion, F2P's luck will matter more along the way to win their rolls on the dropped gear by the boss when raiding or in PUG PVPing is how competent your team is as long there isn't much bads it'll be better.

One absurd thing that I've noticed is that there will be a potion implemented to boost your character's level instantly into 60th, what a smart move Trion has done to let these payers SKIP MAJORITY of the contents of their game and just advance forward to the expansion...

Also, one critical aspect comes with "Expansion" souls (AKA Subclasses) which requires to be paid tends to be the most useful and becomes a requisition in certain purposes later should you do raiding or PVPing. Which will certainly influence a couple of F2P players to pay these in order to expand their performances of competence in more different ways (Expanding different builds).

PVPing is broken at the moment generally because each souls weren't completely balanced in its proper scalings. A Mage Pyromancer has the strongest ST DPS than the other callings' similar type of souls, a Rogue's Physician whom is an ST healer tends to be unkillable and can easily save its other teammate no matter how strong their opponent's DPS is. And most of the players doing PVP tend to be casual and cares only to finish their dailies with no intention of taking things seriously granted.

The customer service tends to be unsupportive as it takes a very long time depending on how well they'll care answering the players' concerns (Varying from a week to a couple of months), which will also end up having a generic response similar to what we'll hear from other companies. Therefore, you'll most likely find the answers for your concerns through the old threads on the forum.

Was a good game when it was pay to play. I had played this extensively before the game went free to play. Took a break for a while as they made the free to play transition, when I came back, all of my characters were gone.

So I submitted a ticket to support to get my characters restored (You know, the ones I had spent 100+ hours on), and support refused to do anything for me. Nor did they offer any form of compensation.

They basically gave me, someone that had faith in the game, had paid full price as well as a 6 month subscription, the middle finger. Immediately turned around my view of the game and the developers behind it.

Fun game if you can avoid ever having to deal with support. But I will not recommend it simply because of the attitude of the support team. 100+ hours put into my main character, and they delete it upon the free to play transition and refuse to compensate me in any way for it... Treating a paying player in such a manner is completely unacceptable.

Probably the best free to play MMO out there. A robust character system (not as robust as ArcheAge, but that's totally pay to win) and good crafting system. rift events (mini raids, if you will) are open to everyone in the area and don't require you to queue or to find a group. Just roll in and be rewarded based on your contribution.

It's very much like the now dead Warhammer Online in quality and play but, unlike WHO, has the player base to keep it alive and prospering for now.

It's no WoW killer, but its pretty damn good.

Rift is a great game. Very good classes some server issues when I first played it but it seems to be all fixed now. Highly recommend it if someone is looking for something that is similar to WOW but different story and more modern with better graphics.

Great population , Fun to play , however leveling can be slow and boring , pretty much all it is is the odd dungeon with instant adventures for the first 30-40 levels , but worth a try!

The very definition of P2W.

Paid-for gear.
Paid-for bag slots.
(Even an entire bag slot that cannot be unlocked without buying a collector's edition of what is supposed to be a "free" game.)
Paid-for bank vaults.
Paid-for boosters.
Paid-for mounts/pets/minions.
Paid-for instant level 60.
Paid-for class specs.
Paid-for auction house.
Paid-for achievement rewards.
(You know, like, achievements in normal games that would otherwise reward you with something. Yeah. Those kinda achievements. For doing something awesome. Yeah................. you will have to pay real money to unlock the reward of the achievement you "earned." Yup, just check the Trophies section of the store.)

For the love of baby jeebus, just go pay for a subscription based game already. In the long run, it's so much cheaper and so much better then these games that drop hidden expenses on you nearly at every single turn.

But don't take my word for it. Waste the 25GB+ of bandwidth and the several hours it will take you to download this game. Then press the "]" key to open the RIFT store (or click on the shopping cart icon), and see for yourself. Fanboys of this game will repeatedly say that it's completely free to play; and they would be right. The game is "free to play," but if you expect to enjoy this game you will spend money. A lot of money. You will spend more money on this "Free to Play" model then you will on a traditional subscription based MMO.

Anybody who has played any MMO on a "hardcore" level knows that other players are treated like garbage for what they haven't unlocked or the item level of their gear. Is that very fair? No not really, but that has become standard MMO behavior. Now imagine trying to be taken seriously by the time you spend all that time leveling up to end game to have never put a single dollar into this game, thus preventing you from unlocking abilities that will seriously make you better to your raid party. Do you think the raid party is going to take you over somebody else who has paid to unlock abilities that will not only let them DPS, but instantly switch to a tank or a healer on the fly?

Do you really want to play a game with other people who paid to instantly have their character leveled up to 60, so when you are randomly paired with them via looking for group they literally have no clue what they are doing and you have to carry them?

Do you think bag slots are worth $5 to unlock? Not for all your characters. Just ONE of your characters. That's right, if you have more then one character you will need to buy the bag slots for each one you have. And the $5 doesn't unlock all your bag slots. Haha, oh no, it only unlocks a single bag slot out of multiple ones. You can easily spend $50 before you know it on just unlocking the bag slots for a meager two characters. One of those bag slots being completely unobtainable without spending at least $20+USD. (However, the $20 bag slot will at least be granted to all your characters, at least there's that. Seriously what a rip off.)

Do you think achievements you've earned should cost you money to acquire the actual reward?

If spending absurd amounts of money on those sort of things is your cup of tea; by all means, play this game and be happy with it no matter what I or anybody else says.

And a little bit of additional information about the quality of customer care in RIFT: support tickets can sometimes take as long as a month for a reply. But hey at least they reply right? Better late then never? Heh.

Also I should note that Steam's version of my hours played is totally inaccurate. I own two collector's edition of this game that I had to buy before this game was ever free to play. Before this game was ever even on Steam.

</completely truthful rant>

I am *not* suggesting that RIFT's advertisements are sexist. I am posting the above video in my review because it makes valid points about nearly all supposed "free to play" games. Also, after writing such a serious review I needed something to make me laugh. So if you took the time to read my entire rant, you deserve a laugh too. :)

a decent MMO marred by horrible support. my experience with rift was good it was good enough i decided to buy into the game so i bought a sealed boxed edition of the storm legion off amazon that had a bonus code for a walmart only preorder cloak for my characters to use (i didnt care about the bonus cloak i only mention it becasue its relavent to my troubleshooting process.) once i get said boxed edition i go to try and register the cd key for the account upgrade expecting no problems at all as i researched everything via the trion worlds faqs about buying boxed edition after it went free 2 play so according to the website this should have unlocked 4 new talent trees to play with... however in stead i was treated to the error message of "an unexpected error has occurred please try again later" so i tried inputing the key code again double checking to make sure it was 100% correct again "an unexpected error has occurred please try again later" at this point i type an invalid key just to see what error message the site gives out and im greated with "invalid or expired key please check your code and try again" so its definitely not user error. so at this point i try the code for the cloak and it works no problem frustrated i file a ticket with support checking on it daily for 3 days straight there is no activity AT ALL then i post an update askign about the status and stating that even a notification of " we got it we will get to in in X business days" would be acceptable and within 24hours i get just that a cookie cutter response saying they will get to it within 72 hours..... and that was the last communication i got out of them on the ticket for the 4 more weeks i left it open after 4 weeks of no response i got understandably ♥♥♥♥ed off and closed the ticket citing the lack of support as the main reason i closed my account.

long story short its a fun game UNLESS you need to deal with customer support as they dont care about the players and as a result i will not be supporting this or any other trion worlds product i reccomend other plaers also steer clear of this product due to the lack of customer support
