"When I thought I was out, they pulled me back in, and it's now sunrise"

No seriously, as a huge fan of the serires my whole life, Civilization III is quite possibly the best out of them all, and for several reasons

10/10 buy it

Back when resources could be depleted...

Ahh the memories this game brings back, From playing this, Starcraft, and MoOII (which needs to be rereleased for modern OS), It was a good time. Sometimes it's good to step back from the super high res graphics that triple-A titles give you and get some nestalga with older graphics, not to mention play one of the greatest TBS games ever released. Plus it's Five dollars. Why would you NOT buy this?

Personal Experience: This is the first Civilization game I've ever played and before I knew it I was getting angry sitting at school thinking about how the Mayans were advancing on Moscow. I finally get home and load it up to push the attack to get flaked and then have Moscow taken.

10/10 Would buy for loads of fun.

Arguably the best game in the Civilization series. Even 13 years after its release it's still fun to play.

I'm new to Civilization games, and pretty new to RTS games in general. However, I still enjoyed this game a lot. I'm awful, I lose pretty much every time, and I still have fun. This game has you building a civilization from scratch, trying to expand city by city to become the best civilization possible. At the start, you are given TONS of options. Picking what civilization you want to be to determine your starting perks, climate, weather, the age of the world, difficulty, barbarian options, AI agreesiveness, the ratio of water to land, and a whole bunch of customizable options for the rules and game limits. It's a lot to take in. And once you start, you can work towards whatever kind of civilization you want, from city structures to your units to your research... there's just a lot of options. But, what makes this game so cool is that there are not only a lot of options for starting and working your way through the game, there are also multiple ways to win the game as well. So you can replay lots of times trying to win in all the different ways available. If you are being severely outmatched in one area by another civilization, perhaps you can salvage your game by switching to another goal for victory. It's really very clever.

However, there ARE some issues with this game. It can be a lot to take in at first, especially since the tutorial mode is defaulted to off. I learned everything by winging it but not everyone will have the patience or luck for it. It'll take a while just to get used to what everything does and understanding how to navigate the game. Also, games tend to take hours to complete, which can also be rough if you don't have much time to play. It'll take A LOT of time to get acquainted with the game and to play in general so it's a HUGE time suck. I just wanted to get that point clearly across. Also... it's really hard... or I just suck... or both. Also... the online has been shut down, making this single player only. There ARE some complicated and iffy ways of working around it to play online, but they aren't worth the risk or hassle. The online is supposedly coming to Steamworks in the future, but until it comes, online is not a viable options, which is the whole reason I got it in the first place and that's diappointing, but it's my own fault for not looking into it more I guess.

Despite the issues, this game is VERY cheap. Five bucks for hours and hours of gameplay, including the two expansions to the game. Easily worth it, especially if you're looking to get into the Civilization series or RTS game in general. Just be aware of the time it will take to enjoy the game.

Love this game! Even with all of the sequels, I still come back to Civ III and waste hours of my life.

Only request to Steam/Firaxis/Aspyr or whoever...it's the 21st century...can we have this game cross-platform (Mac OS and Linux) so I don't have to dual boot anymore?!

Vincent Price's most helpful reviews: Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete.

Civilization III (or Civ III for short) is an argricultural war simulator, in which you build wheat, farm iron, and thresh people in a significant battle over land and cities.

Should you take too long to murder your foes, the game may decide to just let you win by saying you're so cultural that there's no way they can challenge you, and they automatically forefeit. Which is stupid, because a rich culture like that is not as likely to have the vast killing potential an uncultured brutish army nation would, but alas, not everything in life, or Civ, is logical.

10/10 with a friend, 6/10 by yourself, 2/10 when you spend hours trying to port forward to get it to work properly on multiplayer. Recommended for people who want their lives consumed entirely.

I used to play this game every day for several years, and I still do from time to time. In all, a masterpiece of a game, and for the low price of $4.99 for the core game and all of the expansion packs, its nearly irresistible!

I’ll say this right off the bat, this game is flawed, VERY flawed.

But at the same time fun, VARY fun!

At the start, this game seemed perfect. Micromanaging is kind of my thing, but as the game progressed, is started to meet new civilisations, and all of them where ♥♥♥♥♥.

Especially the Inca’s, in two games I have met them and in both have tried to destroy me. Why, Is it because there militaristic? No. The Greeks tried to attack me and there also scientific, are the Byzantines just ♥♥♥♥? It was Same problem with the English.

I’m not above a challenge, but when everyone else seems to be researching at a far greater pace than me, and as a result have ♥♥♥♥ing guns when I still have bows and arrows? That’s just ♥♥♥♥. Also enemy troops must be covered in ♥♥♥♥ing kryptonite because it takes 3 to take down 1.

They must have been high when they programmed the AI.

In conclusion, good game. Up until you meet someone else

2/10 - DONT GET THIS GAME IF YOU'RE EXPECTING THE MULTIPLAYER TO WORK

I ended up buying this game mostly just for the Multiplayer. Singleplayer on this game is extremely boring, considering all you do is press up and down, sometimes left and right. OH and the occasional click of the LMB. I tried playing multiplayer to see people in chat complaining it not working. Apparently they Closed the Multiplayer a little bit before i bought the game.... Sad that there was nothing written before i bought it saying NO MULTIPLAYER... thanks steam.

If you like endless HUAAAGHH sounds, sitting for 5 minutes watching people in blue shirts dance, or staring at a poorly rendered Abraham Lincoln and/or Queen Elizibeth, this is the game for you. In other words, why THE HECK does this exist?
