Had never played this game before so it's not nostalgia talking, but I'd heard it was really good and i liked the idea so i gave it a go. It's probably the best game I've played recently and I really enjoyed it. It's a really funny and enjoyable game and I would recommend it to most people. Runs well too, didn't run into any issued on windows 10. Note controller support is sometimes flaky but keyboard controls are good and a standard 360 controller WILL work well enough, but the game struggles if you disconnect or reconnect while it's running.

Although the platforming isn't quite as tight as Banjo-Kazooie and the other old Collect-A-Thons of yore, Psychonauts's strong writing and creative premise more than make up for its gameplay's minor issues. There's a reason this game has the reputation it has, and though Tim Schafer has fallen somewhat out of favor with me as a person, I can't deny that Psychonauts lives up to that reputation.

Get it on sale if you can.

The first time I played this game, I shut it off immediately in fear. The opening looked absolutely atrocious. The character design's seemed to come straight from Tim Burton's vision of Hell. The crying and screaming in the background made my head spin. However, I decided to give the game a second go despite my first encounter. Turns out what lay beneath the poorly-aged cutscene was one of my favorite games. I'm enthralled to tell anyone who has even a shred of curiosity to play this game. Immediately.


STORY
So, the story here is that a young boy, namely Razputin, has snuck into a summer camp. However, this is no ordinary summer camp, as the camp is entirely based around teaching it's campers psycho-powers (if you couldn't tell from the title). What follows is a bunch of antics with the camp counselors and the other freakish campers. Without giving too much away, (trust me, there's a plethora of story details to give away) the story here is fantastic. Its pacing is seemingly flawless. There are so many interesting reveals and story bits here that most of the time, I was so close to the edge of my seat that if I were as much as poked, I would've fallen off. Trust me, it's finger-licking... good...? (Don't qeustion it. Or do.)

AESTHETICS
As stated in the opening, the visual style didn't really appeal to me... at first. The pre-rendered cutscenes are actually quite bad in comparison to the actual engine itself. Never see that nowadays, do ya? I digress, the visual style grew on me after a few minutes of gameplay. The whole thing gives me a Tim Burton-Laika Entertainment (The creators of Coraline) kinda vibe. It's absurdity draws you in and holds you in the world of Psychonauts. This absurdity is incredibly exemplified through each level's design and art direction. It gives each level it's own unique flavor (on top of each level's own uniqueness, but I'll get to that). Besides the pre-rendered cutscenes, the aesthetics have aged like a fine wine, getting seemingly better as the years go on. Sure, you can tell that the game was made in the early 2000's, but that doesn't stop you from watching an old movie, does it? I hope not. I wouldn't be your friend if that werer the case. I can't believe I've gone this long without mentioning the game's score/soundtrack! In short, it's amazing. It fits the mood like a glove filled with Vaseline. I might have to purchase both the score and soundtrack if I can. Anyways, I'd give the aesthetics two thumbs-ups.

GAMEPLAY
Alright, so I'll admit- the gameplay isn't the game's strongest aspect. It has many of the problems 3D platformers of the time faced- bad camera angles, difficulty spikes, unfair platforms, etc. However, that doesn't ruin the game. Not one bit. Those things are barely even noticable when most of the time, your movements and psychic powers are smooth as butter on ice. Not to mention the level designs, which accurately depict the though process of each character's brain (did I mention that the levels are just people's minds? No? Sorry about that.). And lemme tell ya, some of these levels can get interesting. These are some of the most unique levels in all of gaming. It makes you think: "Aww! Why didn't I think of that!?" Overall, the gameplay is good, but nothing revolutionary. It's fluent enough to get the story and aesthetics through, while still remaining fun.

CONCLUSION
Buy the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game. Just go.

It's an oddity cult hit that's probably garnered a lot more general interest over the years (i.e. it's probably more well-known now due to being one of the most cited examples of a "gem" by people on youtube and around the internet etc well after it launched) but for good reason.

Honestly just a quality 3D platformer that is very accessible, run of the mill but entertaining enough gameplay-wise, with an absolutely unique, incredible, and interesting theme , setting(s), characters, and story. I won't spoil anything but a lot of it is really clever and needless to say it's definitely worth playing for these things--the gameplay is good enough to not muddy any of it. Recommended for most everyone to some extent, but particularly for anyone that is or has been fond of late 90s/early 2000s 3D platformers and wants to play something that has a lot of charm but feels very nostalgic for that.

Pros:

-Extremely interesting story and characters.
-Genuinely clever, smart humor.
-Visually and mechanically varied levels that make great use of the theme.
-Solid gameplay. Nothing great, but good enough to be somewhat fun and help carry the product.
-Length felt just right, not too short or too long, for the narrative provided (was about 16ish hours for sort of a semi-thorough playthrough. I engaged in the standard collect-a-thon aspect to some degree but definitely didn't go full completionist for this one).

Cons:

-Controls a little loose/odd at times.
-If you're playing with a controller (and I mean... it's a 3D platformer that was sorta designed with that in mind, I'd imagine many people will), switching between psychic powers is a little clunky. This never really gets in the way of gameplay to a degree that it's anything more than a minor annoyance.

For me, three things make this one of my all time favourite games:

• the appropriate and comprehensive use of the “summer camp” theme throughout the story, levels, presentation… everything

• the outstanding level design

• Double Fine Productions' amazingly imaginitively take on the well-worn theme of psychic super powers.

A game that will blow your mind. Reminds me of games that I used to play as a kid like Crash Bandicoot, Banjo and Kazooie and Rayman. I did not know of his game existence but I grab it for 1€ and it did not dissapoint, it completely amazed me. Great gameplay, great story, great characters and great laughs. Stunning concept and worth grabbing it as it is one of the best things you can buy in Steam for such a low price. Waiting impatiently to see how Psychonauts II will surpass its predecessor.

A friend recommended the game to me, and i wasn't disappointed in the least.
The game is extremely pleasant to play, except for two parts (the milkman and the theater) but otherwise the game still holds up even ten years later.
And I would now recommend it to anyone who wants an action platformer with a lot of humor.

10 years old and this actually holds up. Very original game - the design of each level is genuinely completely different from all others, but still cohessive feeling. A 'funny' game that's ACTUALLY funny. Quite a triumph.

It's a pretty fun game, and it has aged well so it does not disturb your eyes or make you mad with aged mechanics. It crashed 3 times in my entire playthrough, so I'd reccomend you to save often if you play it.

So when their first title, Psychonauts, was finally released in 2005, it was a surprise to see it commercially fail despite the great reviews.
Although the game eventually gained the following it deserves, it is easy to understand the initial troubles: on the surface, it looks like a typical early 2000s 3D puzzle platformer with 90s kids’ movie stereotype characters drawn as Nickelodeon figures. It took years to finally understand that its greatness lies under the hood.

For starters, there is the plot. Initially, it seems like a summer camp movie about kids who have psychic powers, but as the story goes on, we learn that this movie was apparently directed by Tim Burton, as it slowly turns into a (kid-friendly) nightmare world for our brave protagonist, the somewhat clichéd sassy tough kid Rasputin.

This change in atmosphere is anything but subtle, as the game world moves from a somewhat serene campground to a creepy island asylum. Both of these serve mostly as an overworld that ties together the actual levels, all set in the mindscape, the psyche of certain characters.
These levels are the main reason behind the late-coming success of Psychonauts. Each offers something brand new game mechanic, ranging from simple platforming to almost point ‘n’ click levels of story-driven puzzle solving. They delve deep in the minds of a character, utilising this to its full extent to tell us an interesting, often bittersweet tale, showing us the full capabilities of the storywriting strength Double Fine could deliver.

That said, it REALLY shows that Tim was more used to adventure games than 3-D collect-a-thon platformers.

When there are adventure-game-type puzzles (like Gloria's Theater or the Milkman Conspiracy), the game really shines. Unfortunately, that's not the majority of the game. The majority of the game involves gimmicky powers (I never used the shield outside the level you get it in, and Clairvoyance mostly just has comedic effect), very basic platforming (and even MORE basic combat), and some of the most tedious collect-a-thon-ing I've seen in any game.

You may have noticed that, despite all this, I am still recommending the game. Why? Because it was a fun ride despite these glaring flaws. The atmosphere alone compensates for many of these issues tenfold. The various worlds you explore are neat, and the art style is solid.

I'm glad I played it, I'm just unlikely to play it again.

I have grown weary of 3D Platformers.
Over the years, I simply got bored of them.
Have heard of Psychonauts before, but left it aside, assuming it was the same as the rest.

Eyeballing it in my Games List, I decided to give it a shot.

2 weeks later, I'm here, writing this review.

Psychonauts essentially changes everything that a 3D Platform should be, then adds in several cups of the Schafer Salt for good measure.

The game is easier to play now, thanks to the recently added (rudimentory, but sufficient) Xbox 360 controller support.

But is it worth the asking price of US$10?
Very Much yes. Even more so if its below the base price.

I only disliked one level of the game, the very last level (from what I've read, I am not alone), yet the rest of the game I absolutely loved.
The game does not end story-wise and so it is dependant on the sequel, which as of writing this it has not been release yet.

In the Double Fine Catalog, Psychonauts is in the short list of favourite games from the Developer.

Psychonauts is a masterpiece of gaming, full of originality, humour, secrets, and little touches that show the developers put lots of care into this game. I could go on for days about all the little things that demonstrate how they really tried to this great.

But suffice it to say Psychonauts is one of my all-time favourite games, and you need to play it right now. If games are art, then Psychonauts is one of the prime examples of this.

It had been a while since I played the original PS2 Psychonauts and beat it, possibly a couple years at most. Since I beat it I always had that elusive Rank 101 in mind, having only gotten somewhere around 70-90. Now that I rebought the game I spent a good three consecutive days hunting everything down and getting the ***** to display my name and call me a psychomaster. It got a little frustrating from time to time when I couldn't find the last collectable in a few worlds as they hid in plain sight, but overall... I liked the game. I kinda wished that some of the characters were a little more fleshed out, but for what it is I enjoy it. If you do play this game, don't just rush through it (Unless your goal is to go fast). Instead, take your time and explore the world a few times, you might witness things you didn't expect. Getting all the achievements on Steam really showed me how much of this game I didn't see before. So many new things to do and learn about that my mind was boggled by the sheer amount of stuff.

Aim for the highest rank possible, but if you get stuck wondering how to do that *ONE* thing, or where the last collectable is... It isn't necessarily the best idea to get yourself worked up trying to figure it out.

SPOILERS TO SOME DEGREE:


In the end, it ends up being a bit disappointing that there really isn't any... bonus, for Rank 101. You do get something for rank 100, but not 101. Well, you get the achievement but that's it. Not really worth it in my opinion, but I guess it's the journey that counts.

Wspaniała gra platformowa z dużą dawką humoru. Dzisiaj rzadko kiedy możemy zagrać w grę minimalnie tak dobrą jak Psychonauts. Bardzo dobre udźwiękowienie, odniesienia do innych tworów i gier, oraz historia którą chce się śledzić z zapartym tchem. To chyba jedna z pierwszych gier, w której możemy wchodzić do czyichś umysłów. Grafika w dniu premiery stała na bardzo wysokim poziomie i wyciskała wszystkie soki z ps2 oraz xboxa (co jednak dosyć znacznie, poprawił jeszcze Black na ps2). Jeśli ktoś lubi platformówki albo gry zręcznościowe, to jest to gra absolutnie dla niego.

Bloody awesome game, really fun to play. Looking forward to Phychonauts 2.

Also whoever did the level design for The Meat Circus should have their head examined. That level was awful just awful. You can do a lot with a meat and circus theme. But you cannot do it like that!

This game....its just a classic. I had to finish it twice and get most achivements before i wrote this. The game is fantastic its a true gem. It has a wierd and witty story about "psychic" students in a school...well more like camp. Its an action, platfromer and definitely an adventure game with great amazing graphics for its time, as well as having a slight Tim Burton look.

The gameplay is also perfect and no problems with the ui as well as abilities and wepons. I enjoyed the game very much with a keybord and mouse and its very obvious it was made for a ps2 so a controler is welcome too. Now with it coming to PS4 this game should be played by anone wanting a game to laugh about, with its witty comedy and fun characters this game shouldnt be missed.

Loved this game till then end and litterally played nothing else till i finished it. A well deserved 10/10!!

Psychonauts is one of the best games that ever made! the game takes you into deep mindblowing worlds where you can find people to help solve there problems and collecting figs, emotional bags, cob webs, and more! this game is made by Double fine productions.

10/10 You can get this game if you want and check out some awesome game

There's a reason why Psychonauts is in my top 10 favorite games of all time
Positives
-Unique presentation
-Fantastic controls
-Brilliant level design
-Well written characters, I only wish some were given more spotlight, like Boyd Cooper and Sasha Nine.
-An engaging story
Negitives
-There was a lot of noticeable pace breaks during a play though, namely when you get to the Insane Asylum and you have to go though 4 different minds without any real story going on. Also when you are in Rasputin's mind and you have to go to the top of the tower and then all of a sudin you need to get your levitation power.
-Near the end of the game, there's no way to go back to the hub world, so if you wanted to go back and get everything to get rank 101, you'll have to start the game all over again.
Overall Psychonauts is a fantastic game

A amazing story for not only a platformer in a game with tons of great humour sadly ruined by low amount of good/entertaining level design (Lungfishopolis/Milkman Conspiracy were the only good ones). Horrible tedious platforming sections and odd bugs/camera misplacement also occur quite often sadly. This game had every tool to be a masterpiece but unfortunately missed the mark on too many points except for its humour and story. The extremely fast paced levelling up in the game also feels unsatisfying unlike other collectathons since everything is just placed too much around for the sake of it and especially the "brain" collecting felt forced. I personally didnt feel like collecting any other stuff when i arrived at the point of no return in the game. The Waterloo level had a great font and design and could have been one if not the best level in the game is simply ruined by tons of these flaws on top of a dumb design choice that forces tyou to leave the level twice to get some kind of letter/coin.
This game imo is ultimately a hugely missed opportunity though but is still worth giving a go, but the feeling of finishing it is very conflicting, it has a good story and premise hampered down by being a sub par platformer nowhere near the golden era of RAREs days or Nintendo. I would just rate it above the 3D Rayman/Spyro/Crash games at best.

One of the funniest and warmest games you could ever play. Though there are some gameplay flaws it's impossible to not love this game for it's personality. No matter how much I play and do everything I can in this game I keep coming back to it. Once you play it you will feel happy just thinking about visiting this world. It's escapism at it's best and if you love video games you will love Psychonauts.

This game is pure magic. Storytelling worthy of a film, warm, intelligent humor, and challenging action and platforming. It's stood the test of time. If you haven't played it, do. If you have, give it a replay.
