This episode is the shortest and least immersive as compared to Half Life 2(aka Chapter 0) and Half Life 2: Episode 2. It seems just a better version of Duke Nukem Forever.

Why the name is "Half Life"? You scared by the alien invansion which made you already lost half of your life. This episode? Where is the atmosphere and experience of being alone 95% of the time?! The new mechanic is very interesting, BUT, the worst linear adventure FPS gameplay as compared to other Half Lifes.

It existed mainly is to show the result of the Source Engine's new capabilities, as well as new design principle. (Pls refer to commentary mode)

I strongly not recommend this unless it is heavily discounted. Or you don't care your wallet's money.

Played many years ago, and started again only to be disappointed that the Alyx Vance AI seems to stall the game, its frustraiting waiting for her to constantly finish what she has to say / do to progress the game.

I just stopped playing, the AI in the full HL2 game wasnt like this.

Half-Life 1: You are a badass scientist trying to escape a shady research corporation in new mexico after a rift is opened up during one of your experiments, allowing headcrabs and other creatures into the facility.
HL1 Opposing force: You are a specially trained elite trooper sent into a research facility to eliminate Gordon Freeman.
HL2: You travel to a dystopian city, seek out the HQ of a resistance movement, and carry out an all-out assault on combine HQ to rescue Eli Vance and destroy the citadel.

HL2: Episode one: You go to the station to catch a train....

10/10 would train again, good to see the innovation going on at valve.

Half-Life 2: Episode One is a sequel and the first episode of Half-Life 2. The game is short, with just 5 chapters but still fun to play. Alyx, the second main character, helps you and is more around you than in the last game. In the beggining she is a bit annoying, saying "What the hell" too many times but later on she's very helpful. A nice detail is Alyx's reaction if you flashlight her in the face. The gameplay and graphics are very similar to HL2 with some new features in gameplay, like covering the exit hole for Antilions with cars. Overall, Half-Life 2: Episode One is a fun and short game and you can finnish it in less than 5-10 hours.

By far, one of the best games I've ever played with myself and some best friends of mine. I love the characters and story so far. Some shocking moments, sad moments, etc. I would play the game again just for the excitment and to get the story a lot more. Always love to shoot at my enemies chasing after me with some awesome music playing in the game. I give the game 10/10 ^_^

And so continues the odyssey of 'hey Dr. Freeman come help us we are completely hopeless without you'. And it is bleeping awesome. Nonstop action from start to finish, there's not much else to say. Short and a ton of fun. I look forward to episode 2. Recommended.

Gameplay wise - it has some great moments; including a standout section in which the player directs Alyx Vance's fire via a flashlight.

Unfortunately Valve became sloppy with this expansion pack - opening with a deus ex machina in the lazyest manner poosible.

The scripted sequences become contrived "look at this" moments with Alyx Vance spelling everything out for the player or repeating "oh my god" or in general, gasping at anything and everything to give a foiced sense of drama.

Basically - it's more Halflife 2, but not as good. It's still a great - great game. Better than 90% of shooters out there, but pales in comparison to the main game.

Would still recommend it.

Oh my god! I had never played any of HL2's sequels, but damn, have I missed a lot!
This game is epic!

It's a 3 hour long ride that's so wild and intense that makes all other action games feel dull and flat.
But... what am I talking about? There are no other action games! There's only one king, and Half-Life is his name.

A must play!

This game is AWESOME!!! It has AMAZING graphics, NEW ENEMIES for you to kill and the classic ones of course, it's a VALVE game which makes it a OUTSTANDING game, it has NEW ENVIRONMENTS (kinda) and last but not least Alyx is helpful for the first time in a Half-Life game as she helps you to destroy tons of enemies, even though she can die now(in a mission or in one chapter at least) apart from opening doors, keeping you company and talking to you all the time. In my opinion this is an AMAZING expansion to the Half-Life 2 game and if you own Half-Life 2 then you must play it!! P.S Alyx may be sarcastic during the game and a bit annoying when she's standing in front of you but hey she's a programmed NPC and I like her anyway.

After playing this game, and the first one, I felt a great sense of achievement, for Half Life 1 and 2 are brilliant games. Definately recommended those who haven't come to playing it.
