More bugs squashed

Hey everybirdie,

You have probably noticed a few game updates over the last few days, these were to try and fix some of the remaining issues people have been having. These issues in particular:

  • Achievements sometimes not unlocking.
  • Graphical glitch in chapter 4.
  • Issues with progress sometimes not reloading.
  • Black screen startup/new game issue.

We believe this latest release will fix the above issues. However if you are still having any problems please continue to report on them in the forums.

Thanks

A series of holiday-themed side-stories that is just as nonsensical strangely endearing as the first game, introducing new ridiculous intriguing characters. also sights we never knew we needed, such as a cosplaying nanaki and shuu in a santa hat.

10/10 would adopt miru and kaku

The later half of the game draws lots of references to classic Japanese childrens' literature by Kenji Miyazawa, if you're familiar with his popular works like Restuarant of Many Orders and Night on the Galactic Railroad, you can better understand what the author(Moa) tries to draw parallels with.

I would definitely reccommend you to play the BBL route(the very long "True End") of the first Hatoful Boyfriend game before starting on this, as there are many spoilers from the game. Since this is the sequel, the personalities, pasts and motivations for each character have already been fleshed out in the previous game. HoliStar doesn't hold your hand and explain everything again.

HoliStar focuses more on the relationship between Hitori, Kazuaki and Nageki, and there's also parts about how Shuu actually feels about Ryuuji. There's only one storyline to follow here, the wrong choices just leads you to a game over. I'm here for the story so it didn't matter for me.

A tip that Mediatonic could improve on would be a log function, where you can check the previous few lines said by characters.

This is actually my second time playing this! (First was when HoliStar was released but not on Steam) And it's still as emotionally evoking as I remembered it to be. I laughed at pigeon dating sim when I tried the first game on a whim but it's been 4 years and I'm still here.

Like the original Hatoful Boyfriend, this game is so much more than you'd expect. It's quirky, funny, and can get really sentimental. Do not play while in plain view of others or they will judge you for crying about virtual birdies...

Expected to enjoy more time with these great characters and Hatoful's wonderful humor (the Anghel-focused second chapter had me laughing out loud for the majority of its duration); did not expect this set of stories would be able to deliver as profound an emotional blow as the original. 10/10. (Also, Ryouta's radio shows are adorable.)

SO first off I have to say I just love this game., I put thirty 6 hours into it and played through every single path. It is by far my favorite game I've ever played. I really like the birds and the one with the gun he's cool I think I would date him if I were a bird anyway thanks for reading 5 starts

"Man, the first Hatoful Boyfriend was really sad, but this one seems to be more happy." -Me, being wrong, again.

I'd honestly recommend completing Hatoful Boyfriend so that Holiday Star doesn't just scar you, but also opens up old wounds

To be honest, at first this game I was disappointed in. The lack of options in the story, although the unique story had me willing to give it a break and just not write a review vs writing a negative review.

Then . . . then I got to the King's story. I suffer depression and am currently in a fit of it. I was playing for a distraction, some minor happiness it might bring. Instead . . . I found a connection, something that spoke the words I say many times and daily. Something I reflect in oh way to much. For this, for this touch, for this ability to express what I'm afraid of and doing it so well. For this it deserves a good review. Very few games can see and speak of the souls of others.

Possible spoiler with some of the lines:

“I want to die. I want to die. I want to die. But I don't have the courage. I don't like pain. I don't want to suffer. Someone, help me . . .”

Pros:
  • Seeing more of your favorite bird husbandos
  • More birds to meet
  • Will still make you cry

Cons:
  • Less polished than the first game
  • Choices are either a game over or progression and unless you saved recently, you have to fast-forward for a LONG time

I personally still really enjoyed it, even with some complaints. I definitely believe you should play the first game first.
I recommend it, but probably on a sale.

Finally a christmas game that recognizes the timeless christmas tradition of mowing down large buildings with a tank.

I loved this, but would not recommend unless you've played the first game, and know the material to some extent beforehand. Though you don't really need to have done the BBL route to play this.

This has a really interesting format, in that playing different sections unlocks more sections and sort of mini-bonus stories. But there's not as much choice as there was in the first game, and where you do have a choice... picking the wrong one usually just results in a game over, rather than something interesting. You'll usually get a bit of funny dialogue for your trouble though.
