Barony Code Open Source

Hey all,

After months of deliberation and to celebrate the 1st year anniversary of Barony on Steam, we've decided to release the source code for Barony: Cursed Edition on GitHub. You can get it here: https://github.com/TurningWheel/Barony

This source release is licensed under GNU General Public License 3.0, so you are more or less free to modify, distribute, and do whatever you wish with the code, though any derivative works must be licensed under the GPL as well.

By this move, Barony is now officially fully modifiable, any further updates we do on the game will be reflected in this new public repository, and the community will be free to contribute to the game's direction from here on out.

Keep in mind, the original game assets (models, sprites, textures, sounds, music, etc.) are NOT open source. So you will still need a legal copy of the game to play it, and the value of your purchases has certainly not been voided, either.

If you are not a developer, all this means is that the game has not been made freeware all of the sudden, but serious Barony mods are now 100% possible.

If you are a developer, we hope to hear from you in the coming months and years as you start digging around and hopefully begin collaborating on some cool stuff with each other and with us soon.

That's all for now folks. Cheers!

Barony v2.0.3 BETA Release

Heya guys,

Today we are releasing a new beta of the update we've been working on for the past few months for all three platforms (Mac, Linux, and Windows). This new update concentrates pretty much on two things exclusively: bugfixes (and lots of them), and porting Barony from C to C++. Which means as of this update, Barony is now officially a C++ project. :)

Keep in mind to activate this release, you will need to right click on Barony in your steam library, select "Properties", go to the "BETAS" tab, and in the drop down list, choose the "beta" option. No password is needed to activate this branch. Just hit okay and after an update, you'll be good to go.

So without any further ado, let's cut to the chase and list all the changes in this release:

  • internal port of lots and lots of C to C++
  • fixed occasional crash on player death
  • fixed occasional random crash in collision code
  • fixed occasional crash when trading with shopkeeper
  • fixed lots of other random crashes
  • boulders now fall through water and lava
  • fixed shields getting double bonus or negative from beatitude
  • fixed traps spawning in doors
  • fixed clients not being able to walk through certain allies
  • fixed stack overflow caused by monsters accidentally being set as an ally to all other monsters
  • fixed demon heads going through ceilings (they now break them like minotaurs)
  • fixed minotaurs not breaking gates, only gate frames
  • fixed spears actually doing worse than other weapon types
  • fixed amulet of life saving not extinguishing burning characters
  • fixed ladders being placed behind iron gates
  • cure ailment now extinguishes burning players
  • fixed shopkeepers not losing their grudge after a new game is started
  • fixed creature followers getting in fights with shopkeepers and other humans
  • added ability to bind mouse buttons
  • added future ability to bind joystick buttons :)
  • attack and use inputs now configurable
  • fixed game speed slowing down when fps<30 (now only happens if fps<10 to prevent racing)
  • fixed possible crashes when playing the game with incompatible highscore and save files
  • multithreaded steamworks packet handling
  • added /segfault console command, which induces a segfault. :)
  • Linux only: game now releases mouse and dumps stack on segfault

Other things you may need to note with this release: you may have to bind the Attack and Use commands in your settings menu to use the mouse buttons when you start playing, or you will find you cannot pick up or use anything! Keep that in mind before you send us any angry messages about the game being broken or some such.

I'm hungry so it's time for me to build a sandwich. Hope y'all enjoy the update -- we have big plans for the future. Also, keep an eye out for an open source release of the game code (not the assets) in the next few days.

Sheridan

  • Hundreds of unique collectible items and loot, including several rare and mystical artifacts

The Story So Far

Barony tells the story of an undead lich named Baron Herx, who terrorized the town of Hamlet in a previous life and is now holding out in a vast subterranean complex known as the Devil's Bastion. As a single hero or a group of adventurers, it is your mission to descend the depths of his abode, confront him in his hellish lair, and destroy him forever. Whether you will simply meet your doom in the dungeons as many have before you or rise to victory against the Baron and his hellspawn is ultimately up to you.

The game is pretty hard, and a lot of the difficulty can feel really unfair, like instant death traps that come from nowhere (even when you turn off traps in the game menu), or the fact that every item you pick up is potentially cursed or poisoned, with no indication of such unless you level up your appraise skill. It also has a strange difficulty curve. The first five levels or so are brutally hard, then the game gets pretty easy for a long time, to the point where a lot of enemies can't even deal damage to you. Then you hit the end boss and he three shots you in about ten seconds.

So, it's a tough game, but if you play it with friends it's pretty fun. To play by yourself, the difficulty feels punishing, and the game is kind of boring, but with friends, it's a pretty good time.

Incredibly hard; unforgiving. Fun with friends.

Think nethack lite with multiplayer.

Although, no matter how many scary enemies and demons you meet in the dungeon... pain you endure through use of blindness, amulet's of strangulation, starvation, poison, succubi stealing your items...

There is absolutely NOTHING more painful than dying from boulders. They're everywhere, waiting for you. Waiting around the corner to instantly strike and end your lucky run that lead you to level 18 and got you the sword of King Arthur.

Never trust the boulders.

Not friendly to beginners.
I was smashed by a rock from above and died within 5min in the first round.
I was like "Wait, what just happened?"
Then I realized that this was a hardcore game, since later I found out that I could be slayed by a slime which was quite ridiculous. Have you ever be defeated by a slime in an RPG game???
I mean this is too much

BUT ANYWAY, I LIKE IT!!!!!!!!

As a fan of roguelikes (ADOM would be my favorite), I just can't recommended Barony. You simply die too much. The learning process and progress is so heavily based on error-trial-learning where you simply die pretty much every single time. That wouldn't be an issue as it is, but when you add the fact that it takes a while to get to the core gameplay when you do die - that's repulsive to me.

Your first session with the game will unlikely be enjoyable. Too large portion of that time will be spent on running back to the dungeon to "start learning again" vs focusing on the actual core gameplay. Not a game for me. I value my time too much.

Not far along in the game and i already love it. The atmosphere, the slight horror (not really) feel when walking through the darkness of an open room, all amazing. The gameplayitself is very good too, there's many different types of playstyles and different weapons and such. I will say, though, that the bow you get as a starter weapon as the rogue is a little wierd, since you can't hold an arrow in the bow, you have to wait for the full charge up, then it automatically releases.

Overall, check it out. It's cheap and may not seem like a fun game at first (hell, i even tried to refund it a while ago because i wasn't enjoying it) but once you understand the very basics it's very very good.

besides, at least it isn't delver

EDIT: Oh, and I'm assuming co-op is great too. Probably even better. But still, get this game. I won't be playing co-op most likely and I hope to play a ton of this game anyways.

My friends and I got this game based on a hunch. They are the ones that got it first, and I followed. I must say, I have had a fabulous time playing with my friends, and enjoying this game. I would spout to you the cons and pros, but my review is taking into the account of genre, type of gameplay, people I play with, and overall experience. Bonus, developer feedback fixes the bugs. Awesome.

Expect a DLC or another game because these guys know what they are doing.

Have fun! Disable traps if you want an easier adventure. I've never played with Minataurs on ._.;;

Barony is a Roguelike/Dungeon Crawl.
Taking it's inspiration from the ES:Arena and Daggerfall as well as System Shock and other RPGs. I've found it difficult to get into roguelike games (Mostly because I'm very impatient and usually die on the tutorial). I was thrown into the world of Barony immediately, not knowing what to do, or what to expect. I read the book behind me, explaining what I must do and the backstory, it's too bad my first character was strangled to death by a necklace (That wasn't even appraised yet I might add).
I cannot stress this enough, appraise your stuff first before you use it!!! Once it's appraised, and it sounds like it's going to kill you if you use it, odds are it will.

Pros:
-Atmosphere is amazing, eerie and down right heart pounding at some times
-Basic game mechanics makes it easy to pick up
-Enthraling story
-Multiple dungeon styles along your journey adds depth
-Appraise skill leveling helps
-Not too difficult but definitely not easy in the slightest
-Music, music, music. I would love to have the guy who created this music write me a requiem

Cons:
-Wish it was longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This game is brutal. If you hate dying a lot even over stupid things, then this isn't the game for you. You WILL die a LOT. You're gonna have to learn what items do what, and what mobs do what, and how to handle each mob. To be honest I love this game. It's brutal and very unforgiving. The only thing I hate is the minotaur because anytime he shows up the run is done. Skeles are a little op and well, actually everything is op other than you. Be prepared because this isn't easy. It's a little buggy too but nothing that reall breaks the game... except when it doesn't start and I have to reinstall a few times and mess around in the game folder to fix it. >->
Pros -
- Nice graphics
- Brutal and it's not some ♥♥♥♥♥ roguelike *cough cough* roguelands *cough cough*
- I hate life now

Cons -
- Can't see hunger level (this is very annoying because I don't know when I'm gonna need food.
- Minotaur is a little too fast imo, no way to escape unless you find the exit first AND are nearby it when he shows up.
- Mobs can enter the start room in every area, this is very annoying because I get a little lag when going to each area and so when I get there, sometimes 1 or to skeles will come in and kill me.
- Dwarfs op pls nerf.

Total Rating: 7/10 ~The first con and third con contribute to this rating.

Barony is one of those games that makes you love it and hate it at the same time. It punishes you and you keep coming back for more. Playing with a group of friends is probably the best way to experience the game as you can help each other out when a gaint boulder drops on your head or a rat bits you to death when you are in the bathroom.

The game feels unpolished in a way that is endearing but some might find this quirks un-fun.

The game is great! Old school dungeon crawler with great atmosphere. Also multiplayer. One of the best roguelike 3D transitions I've played (albeit without the turnbased combat, everything else is there).

Only criticism is it's a bit short, only taking around an hour and a half to finish. So this review is in support of the devs adding more variety and length to the experiece. Would love to see more character development decisions, things like a diety to worship or mutations etc and more optional areas to explore on the way down. Even requiring the player to make it back to the top after the boss would be neat (almost a NG+).

Anywho, recommended!
