The first game which introduced me to the world of tower defense games.
You are a homeowner protecting your brains. Because the zombies are after you, you must take advantage of the various plants which you can plant on your property. But not only are there different plants with their own strengths and weaknesses, there are also different zombies. A right plant for the right zombie is the key in protecting those precious brains of yours.
I have mentioned before that I'm not really a fan of the tower defense games. Mostly because I just don't have the brains for strategy games. Plants vs. Zombies was, however, my introduction to the genre and I'm really glad for that. I remember years ago discovering the game on my sister's computer and playing it through multiple times without getting bored. And I still don't. This is a game which both older and younger people can enjoy. I let my 10-year-old sister try it and it instantly became her favourite game. She actually would have played it through in one session if I had let her.
I love the animations which are both funny and cute and I kind of wish there had been some voice acting to go along with them like in Kingdom Rush. Such as Sunflower having a cheerful voice, Gloomshroom mumbling something sad, Cherrybomb shouting before exploding and so on.
Levels consist of parts in your property and different hours with their own difficulties. The front yard, back yard, roof, day, night and fog. On day time you get sun falling from sky, on night you don't and on fog level fog prevents you to see that well. On your backyard the pool forces you to plant Lily Pads and on roof Flower Pots to be able to plant and because the roof is slanted it requires catapult plants.
The best part of the whole game is easily the special levels between normal levels AKA Conveyor-Belt levels. You don't choose the seeds, they come on a conveyor belt without costing sun. The minigames and puzzles, gotten when progressing in adventure mode, are fun as well. My favourites being Wall-nut Bowling and I, Zombie.
And the soundtrack! You can't help but jam and sing along.
It's a solid tower defense game with the exception that it's one of the easiest in the first playthrough, which takes about 4-6 hours. There are no difficulty options (other than for survival) so instead the game gets harder once you have finished it for the first time. The first playthrough also starts off very slow in the beginning so getting to the good part can take quite a while and can put off both new players and veterans.
Usually when I had finished the game I did some of the minigames and puzzles and started all over again. The grinding for money is such a bore for those last plants and for Tree of Wisdom which I found useless, especially to those who have played the game multiple times. 247 500 coins for growing the tree to 100 feet and after all that getting an unnecessary cosmetic cheat? I wouldn't want any real cheats but perhaps new cool plants or more minigames/puzzles would have been great and rewarding for all that effort.
I also wish there had been some kind of a fast forward button, like Turbo Button in Plants vs. Zombies 2, to help prevent the boredom but ultimately it would have made the gameplay shorter.
