New Public Beta with Xbox One Controller Support!

We've released a new public beta for Good Robot that moves the game over to SDL2 for better controller support and improves performance. It is still a little rough, but you're free to give it a try and send us your feedback!

Here's how to get the beta:

1. Right click "Good Robot" in your Steam library, select properties.

2. Switch to the "Betas" tab in properties. If this does not appear, restart the Steam client and it should appear.

3. Select "publicbeta" in the drop down list of branches available.

This is still work in progress, so any feedback would be incredibly helpful. Happy Roboting!

Good Robot Update 2

As we continue refining the game and balancing things, we've made a small patch that addresses issues with certain weapons. Here's what we did:

  • Electron Repeater DPS output and bounces lowered
  • Piercing weapons now correctly count a missile collision as a hit, and continue moving if they have hits left
  • Various misc interface fixes

About This Game

In 2031, unchecked pollution meant humans could no longer survive on the Earth’s surface. Fortunately, PyroCorp saved the world by building massive underground cities with an army of intelligent robots.

Everything was fine - until one day, the robots went bananas and killed all humans. To avert a public relations and stock market nightmare, PyroCorp rests its final hope on you - the only remaining Good Robot.

DO

✓ Erase all evidence that suggests PyroCorp caused human extinction

✓ Terminate all bad robots, for they are the incriminating evidence
✓ Support PyroCorp by purchasing the latest in robot destruction technology
✓ Save yourself from killer robots by making sure your killer robot is better

DON'T

✗ Question what you’re told

✗ Listen to what the virus has to say
✗ Talk to the robots
✗ Romance the robots

Are you a Good Robot? Let me put it this way:
Do bad robots come with a 14-day money back guarantee*?

Helpful hints to other players:
Don't try headbutting your enemies. Do try shooting them with the various weapons you pick up through the game.
Other robots are not flinging candy at you, do not attempt to eat. Do scoop up the cash they leave when you destroy them.

Good Robot is a fun side-scrolling shooter with simple, but effective, visuals and a solid background score. Because the levels are procedurally generated, each playthrough is unique. This can lead to the downside that many Rogue-likes face, where a level becomes overly challenging compared to a prior playthrough. But, the action is a blast (pun intended), the shops and tips offer a lot of funny lines, and my robot often gets to wear a miter (or Pope Hat) or cat ears.

Good Robot is an indie roguelike action game with cute graphics and a lot of content.
If this review is too long for you, I suggest you to only read the first paragraph about the game's content and the final verdict at the end.

What is happening in the game:
You play as the Good Robot the only good thing left on Earth. All the other robots became bad and it's up to you to defeat them all. While doing that, you must of course also be careful that you don't end up dead yourself.

Pros:
  • Graphics | As you can see from the screenshots on this game's Store page, the game looks very nice and colourful. There are a lot of effects every time you do something and it all just goes together to create a pleasant experience.
  • Controls | I like the controls very much and the robot is also quite pleasant to control. It moves with ease and is very responsive for player's input. This really helps when you're trying to evade enemy's bullets. The controls are intuitive and you'll learn them in no time. This enables you to enjoy the game straight away instead of having to learn controls and spend an hour just on that.
  • Soundtrack | The music is certainly awesome, which adds to the overall mood of the game. Electronic music goes very well with action games and the music is good even for listening to it without playing a game at the same time. For that reason, there is also a soundtrack DLC available here.
  • Weapons | During the game, you have the chance to get a few different weapons. Although it's a bit unclear what the weapon is before picking it out, this can be easily forgiven as there are quite a few different weapons and they are quite diverse. Some make explosions, some bounce around, some shoot very fast and some shoot slow. And some of them are just something in-between. In other words, there is surely something that fits your preferred style of shooting.
  • Replayability | There is a lot of replayability value in this game. As I said, there are a lot of different weapons, waiting to be tried out and you can also try getting more achievements. The game itself is pretty fun and it doesn't stop being fun even after several playthroughs. There are also a few different tactics you can try out such as rushing through the levels just to make it through without necessary fights or kill every single enemy to get as much money as possible. The choice is yours and it certainly is interesting to see how both of those options influence the gameplay.
  • Performance | The performance of this game if very good, even though there are a lot of effects, which usually decrease the overall performance. This, however, is not the case in this game. The performance was very stable at all times, which left a very positive feeling after playing it for some time. There were no crashes, no FPS drops, the game uses very few system resources, which means that there was a lot of time spent on preventing bugs and on optimizing performance, which is a very good thing, as you might imagine.
  • Achievements | There are quite some achievements in this game and I like how they're equally distributed in terms of difficulty. Some are very easy, some are not so easy, some are so-so, some are hard, some are very hard. You get the idea. The point is that it encourages the player to improve, which is, in my opinion, what the achievements are all about. Well, that's at least one of the possible purposes. Oh, and the achievements look quite nice.
  • Steam Integration | Apart from the Achievements, there are also Trading Cards, Steam Cloud support, Steam Leaderboards and some other things. Just as it should be.

Cons:
  • Windows Only | So, this game only supports Windows for now. I hope to see SteamOS and MacOS support in near future, as we don't want only Windows gamers to be able to save the Earth!
  • Menu and HUD Appearance | The overall appearance of the main menu (which is the first thing you see when you open the game) is just ... meh. It looks kind of cheap, in my opinion. It could use some improvement. Same goes for other menus and indicators in-game.
  • Story | Well, there isn't much story included in the gameplay. I would love to see some cutscenes, maybe some voice acting, things like that. Although the game was fine gameplay-wise, there was indeed something missing that most other games have: a clear purpose of the game that you're being reminded of every once in a while.

The final verdict:
The game is certainly made well and it shows that a lot of time was put into it. The graphics are pretty good and the controls are enjoyable as well. The performance of this game is very good as the game has been stable all the time without any FPS drops and things like that. Since this is a roguelike game, replayability is expected and this game certainly has that. There are some minor problems, but if you love shooters and action games, this game is worth putting on your wishlist and buying it, if you think you might like it.

It's a twinstick shooter with precise controls, crisp graphics that make it easy to pick out enemies and shots in a firefight, dozens and dozens of different weapons and enemy types, procedurally generated levels, and a minimal, funny backstory that knows when to stand back and let the mechanics and gameplay carry the game. You can easily pick it up and play for a few minutes, or sit down and spend a few hours shooting things. Easily worth the price.

I only played 20 minutes, OK? But I saw no story, no exciting progression options, no interesting enemies, no interesting map features, and no way to get back my health. Put some effort into the first 20 minutes next time.

Very interesting game indeed. I've been given a beta tester code to play this game.

Definitely a 8.9/10 game in my opinion.

Nice clean graphics and managed to get within thet op 20 of the leaderboard the last time I had checked.

The ending was absolute BS though. Didn't follow the same pattern of 5 stages then next chapter.

I believe I was battling like 6-7 bosses constantly in a row and then died on the one that I believe to be the last BOSS.

Still managed to get like 13th or something last time I checked, but still.

Did not follow the structure so that kinda messed it up for me tbh.

Really nice weapons in the game though.

I'd definitely recommend if you're the type that loves rogue style games.

It's just a shame for me it's more of a game that I will play once if I get very far through and then not at all as I'd be too pi**** to play it again.

Still a great game though, good luck with sales, Devs!

A beautiful little bullet hell game with simplistic but amusing writing. It gets tense, but it stays enervating and the music hooks deep into your earballs and never lets go. Also, there's hats! Level design is simple, never overbearing or drawn out to excess, but has a large diversity of designs. Best part is playing around with the variety of different weapons. Do you want bouncing shots? Homing shots? Clusters of missiles? Gatling Lasers? Sawblades? ALL OF THE ABOVE? EVERYTHING AT ONCE?

Okay, well, it doesn't do all of those at once, but it does have a great variety of enemies and weapons and makes for a fun, visually exciting, delightfully adorable, fast-paced bullet shooter. Wholly recommend.

What a fun game. I really dig this game a whole lot. Lots of action, lots of shooting, and robots, what's not to like? I bought this on reccomendation of a co-worker, and I must say, worth every penny. Only complaint I have is that it takes a while to get upgraded. When you get into the later levels, it's almost impossible....key word ALMOST. Maybe a lowering of the cost of upgrades, or lower the progressive cost of them. Also, some kind a healing drop by certian mobs, that would be amazing.

Good Robot -- It's Good!

Full Site Review With More Details Here

For a game to have synergy, there is usually a lot of polish and refinement involved. That is the case of Good Robot. It's smooth twin-stick shooter combat meshes well with the rogue-lite procedural level generation and perma-death possibilities. The inclusion of rogue-lite characteristics and the numerous weapon configuration option, add a rare but substantial depth to this game. It's simple, but very charming, art and music design is as memorable as the tongue-in-cheek humor (can't have enough silly invincibility hats!) scattered throughout the game. I was surprised to find that although it is a procedural game, it's well structured. With choice options at the end of each level to progress to harder bosses (or run through mobs for more cash). This is a fun game, with few drawbacks, that should appeal to wide range of 2d shooter fans.

PROs
- Love the smooth feel of the flashlight effects, and the simple silhoutted art style
- Running into a pile of enemy robots around random corners
- Lots of weapon options
- Hats, kicking ♥♥♥ with a Dunce cap rules
- Addicting combat, rogue-lite elements give infinite replayability
- Humorous and parody tidbits throughout

CONs
- Money starts to run a little dry versus the increasing number of enemies, hard to keep up maintenance.
- Could use a little more story detail.

Even from my first impressions it's a great little game.

Pros:
+ Movement is fluid and responsive. Very important in a perma-death shooter.
+ What weapons (primary and secondary) I found so far are rather varied in operation, but they all *feel* good to use.
+ The writing is consistently funny, but not invasive. It's all in item descriptions and news blurbs at the bottom of upgrade vending machines. All of these are optional, so you aren't forced to sit through the same jokes as you play through the beginning of the game 100+ times.
+ Awesome electronic soundtrack.
+ The "Invincibility" hat achievement set adds an extra layer of difficulty for those already well experienced with the genre.

Cons:
- The hat achievements are going to drive me insane, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s.

This is a really fun roguelite/shmup combo! Gameplay is silky smooth for me on a GTX 770/i5 4670. It's 2D graphics, but it looks gorgeous with a unique art style and very cool lighting effects.

Best of all, the soundtrack is ROCKING. I love the first boss music in particular.

I was excited for years to play this game, after following it on the developer's blog and watching its progress. This game is best described as a cross between a roguelike and a twin-stick shooter, two genres that I've never had much experience with before. Good Robot combines them really well, and makes it fun in a way that suckered me right in. The gameplay is tight, slick, and smooth, with a large number of weapons and strategies to be discovered through emergent play. The visuals are crisp and stylized, and uses color extremely effectively to denote what abilities the bad robots have. All of this is topped with a rocking synthetic soundtrack and funny (but not obtrusive) writing in the vending machines, rounding out a complete package that I will certainly be playing for a while.

Good Robot was most certainly worth the wait.

Good Robot is one of the more unique rogue-like games I've encountered. The game plays well with a controller and the procedurally generated maps provide a fresh experience each run. The music and artstyle are pretty polished and since I have a lot of things going on in my life, one of my favourite features is that you can stop in the middle of a run and continue it later. From what I've seen so far, there is a good variety of upgrades and enemies you can face. The hats are a nice touch with the added benefit of protecting you from damage for one hit. The game can be difficult at points when it turns into a bullet hell with all the enemies shooting at you. There's also the added difficulty of only seeing the enemies in the area your flashlight covers. There doesn't seem to be any unlocks from playing through the game as with most rogue-likes which is nice since everything will be accessible in your runs from the start. Co-op could be nice addition in the future as well as other modes of play. I haven't touched much upon the story so I am unable to comment on that, but overall, I would recommend giving Good Robot a play.

Pros: Good atmosphere--the little text snippets are deeply amusing and the music rocks. (Fans of the Diecast might find of the the selections mildly distracting.) Good mechanics--the guns are super-satisfying and the movement controls are nice. It's visually polished--the icons, robot, environment, etc. just read really well and draw you right in.

Cons: I'm astonishingly terrible at shoot-em-ups and my poor, poor googly-eyes hat keeps falling off. RIP googly hat. I'll pick you back up in two minutes after I die again.
