Reviews

“When the battle begins however, Telepath Tactics begins to show off what it does best; the combat and encounters of Telepath Tactics are every bit as good and as strategic as any Fire Emblem or Disgaea title.”
95.8 / 100 – ModVive

“I played the battles like fantastical chess, agonising about every move and every decision, hitting End Turn with that sweet mix of excitement about what I’d achieved and terror about what would happen due to my oversights or recklessness. It’s good stuff, and *tight* despite having so very many moving parts.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Telepath Tactics knows what made Fire Emblem great. It's the best deconstruction and reconstruction of that formula. The brilliant writing, music, and design are some of the sharpest fine-tuning in tactical RPG history — indie or otherwise.”

About This Game

The indie lovechild of Fire Emblem and Disgaea, Telepath Tactics is a strategy RPG with destructible battlefields, bridge- and barricade-building, and the ability to fling enemies off cliffs and into lava.

Play through a story-driven campaign with dozens of unique characters in a steampunk fantasy universe filled with telepathic generals, tribes of bipedal komodo dragons, and knights who ride atop giant, armored praying mantises:

It was deep winter when young Emma and Sabrina Strider fled slavery in the mines of Kovit. Exhausted and on the verge of starvation, they were found and taken in by a tribe of Lissit, reptilian warriors, who raised the sisters as their own. Now Emma trains tirelessly, bent on revenge and the prospect of rescuing their ailing father from bondage. But the years are never kind to a miner, and time grows desperately short. The sisters will need all of their wits—and the help of some unlikely allies—if they are to succeed…

  • Shove enemies off of cliffs! Fling enemies into environmental hazards like traps, water, and lava!
  • Destroy walls, freeze water, build bridges and lay explosives, changing the face of the battlefield to your advantage!
  • Build an army from among 23 different classes; learn more than 110 distinct attacks as you level up your characters, then promote those characters to powerful prestige classes!
  • Deal with merchants to keep your army well-supplied; make hard choices about your priorities both on and off the battlefield.
  • Play with friends in 2-6 player hotseat multiplayer matches with randomized item drops, multiple play modes, and support for army alliances!
  • Use the Telepath Tactics map editor to build your own campaigns, and download other peoples’ creations to play!

(The map editor is free, and can be procured here.)
(Note that this game does NOT have online multiplayer--as described above, it has hotseat multiplayer.)

I will recommend this game because it is very much in line with games like Fire Emblem, a style of gameplay that I feel is very underserved. It is very clear that this game was made by a group of people who had a very low budget. The gameplay itself is enjoyable, but the visuals look like they came from windows paint, the story line is alright but the dialogue is horrible, and the characters are underwhelming and lack much depth. I don't think there could be anymore female characters in this game, even if it was an all female society, there would still be less women than this game currently features. Overall. Its worth 5-10 bucks. If games like this were more common, I'd pass on it.

The Review
This is the first turn-based tactics game that I have ever played. So I'm not that familiar with the genre but I very much enjoyed this game. The game has a lot of charm and the story is OK. The only cons I have is that the game could have benefited from a longer campaign but with how moddable this game is I'm sure that someone can make a very huge campaign. But for what it is this is a great game especially when you take into account that this game was developer by one person named Craig Stern.

Short version of this review, get this game, it's well worth the purchase.

The reasoning behind my review? First off, if you like fire emblem-esque games this is the closest thing you'll find to them, it's incredibly similar, but not in the inspired-by sort of way, and not the complete-copy way. This game takes the best elements of fire emblem that made it unique and incredible, and adds to those with its own unique style.

I'll go through the list here:

Graphics, the game uses a pretty standard set of 2D graphics that most RPG, medieval-style games use, nothing new there, in great contrast to literally everything else in this game.

Map design, similar to fire emblem maps are very nicely spaced, with some being far bigger than others. I applaud the map design, it's incredibly well done. With chests, and various secrets hidden throughout most, if not all, levels. Breakable terrain is implemented perfectly, adding to the strategy element flawlessly. With treasures and various items to gather, as well as the ability to build and destroy terrain in many levels, the maps elevate the level of strategy required to be victorious over your enemy. I could go on for hours just on the map design!

Story, one of Fire Emblem's shining points was the backstory, character development, and overarching story of it all. Telepath Tactics does all three very well, with funny, interesting, and relatable characters that you get to know and love. Everyone has their own personality, and interactions with each other, which leads to a really nice atmosphere and feel. You can tell very easily how much time and effort was put into the writing, and it paid off.

Music, something that really makes or breaks any great game is the music. Telepath Tactics has fun and atmospheric music that is both exciting and appropriate for the scene. Its choice of music helps to create a truly wonderful atmosphere to play in.

Finally, Telepath Tactics absolute best point, combat. Unique and astounding are about the only words for this game's combat system. The turn-based combat combined with unique skills and an amazing map design leads to nearly infinite ways to be victorious, and some incredibly funny, and entertaining battles.

For example, I was on one level, where I was being crushed, I'd lost the level probably eight or so times already, I was just getting killed instantly by this one guy, that I couldn't kill fast enough. So, I got my healer to go rush the guy and telepathically push him into the center of a lake, using both the heroes to allow her to act three times in a turn. I was able to strand the guy in the middle of a lake while I dealt with the others, and then pull him back across the lake to kill him with my fighters.

What else can I say? I've never played a game with so many options and such a unique skill set available, the gameplay is interesting and fun, and there's always another way to approach something. No two people will ever beat the game the same way, something it far surpasses its predecessor, Fire Emblem, on. A big difference between Fire Emblem and Telepath Tactics is the ability to win in many ways, with many different people, unlike Fire Emblem, there is no superior set of characters, everyone is unique in their own way and can be used to devastating effectiveness.

Moddable. Telepath Tactics is incredible as is, but not only can you mod it, modding is supported, and surprisingly easy to figure out. I managed to learn and make a simple mod of my own in only a few hours.

The only thing I don't endlessly love is the inventory management system, which is a little clunky and difficult/annoying to use. There's no easy way to equip/unequip lots of things at once, there's no easy way to remove or manage items on everyone, and the only way to see the durability of an item is to go to the character's inventory and mouse over the item, which gets a little tedious. However, there are mods that remedy this that are very easy to install.

I should note too, that I'm not sure when, where, or what some of the people writing these reviews were playing when they ran into bugs, glitches, and issues with the game's engine, but I can assure you it wasn't Telepath Tactics. Having played through the campaign entirely myself, and having several friends who've played through the campaign entirely none of us have run into any issues with the game engine, or bugs of any kind. Of the eleven playthroughs from people I know not a single one has had any issues/bugs/glitches, other than one character's weapon randomly being unequipped at the start of a battle, once.

Overall, it's an amazing game, with a unique and entertaining combat system, flawlessly designed maps, and friendly, funny, and personable characters that you'll get to know and love. Flawless map design, music, and storytelling leads to a unique and enjoyable atmosphere. I highly recommend Telepath Tactics to everyone who likes strategy games, Fire Emblem games, or just plain great games. 10/10

A clever and complex little combat game. I wasn't wild about the very linear campaign and the respawn-heavy final battles, but these were only minor issues for me.

Gameplay may be good, but i don't get far enough to judge it, because the engine is technically underbaked, making it rather unpleasant to look at and play. Further, the dev has ignored even the most simple of requests to alleviate the situation despite getting detailed feedback and explanations.

This ignoring can be reread and judged here, so you don't need to take my word on it: http://sinisterdesign.net/forum/index.php?topic=1406.0

In short, the primary issues are:

- game runs at 45 fps default, when animating (intended by dev to be 3x the rate of the ingame sprite animations)
- fps will vary wildly between single digits and 60, depending on what and how many things are animated
- mouse is rendered in-engine, causing the following things:
- mouse movement fluidity changes with game fps
- mouse movement is delayed by a noticable amount of milliseconds by going through the game render engine

If you can handle unstable FPS and unpleasant and clumsy mouse controls, give this one a try. Otherwise i recommend giving it a miss.

I'd have loved for this to be a recommendation, and i had even helped kickstart the game. If Craig ever makes it possible to have the mouse cursor rendered by the OS instead, unlocking it from the game fps, i will review again to see if the gameplay holds up. But as it is, this where it stands.

A Fire emblem like game thats quite fun to play, with the possibility to recruit enemy heroes and friendly NPC's in the fight. I suggest trying it, well worth the money if you like Shining Force, Fire Emblem and similar games.

Pushed a man off a cliff 300 style, Killed him instantly. 10/10 would be a Spartan again.

But in all seriousness this game is amazing. As a Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, and X-Com Veteran, the strategy aspect was pretty easy to grasp and you'll soon learn to Abuse Use the Pull and Shove commands, Alot. Though some enemies may use that same tactic against you in later levels and it will turn bad when your units get pushed off the aformentioned cliff. Now while Telepath Tactics might not bring much new to the table, besides the push/pull commands, it still hits all the right notes and if you're dissapointed with the story, YOU can create your OWN campaign. Everything is here too: swords, lances, axes, bows, Magic is here too, pyrokinesis is fire magic, cryokinesis is ice magic, etc. There are classes and class changes upon reaching "Level 21" (leveling up after level 20 promotes you to your next class type)

To sum it up: Telepath Tactics is a pretty solid Tactical RPG with an interesting and very fun to use mechanic.

Telepath Tactics has a lot more to fofer than a first glance suggests. If you have played Fire Emblem, you can consider this a PC tribute to the series that is well executed and has extra features too. If you haven't played Fire Emblem, here are the basic selling points:

- It is a turn based strategy RPG
- Combat is tricky. You will need to think out your moves. If you are too reckless, you'll lose characters and suffer later on.
- Your warband evolves with you throughout the game, from battle to battle. Each unit has their own abilities and they will level up through combat to grow stronger, earn new abilities and spells, and eventually evolve into elite units. However, if they die... they're gone for good, which can lead to tricky decision making. (You can play on casual mode to disable permadeath)
- Each battle will have several things drawing you off to explore - distant treasure chests, neutral units to talk to and recruit, potential allies to save, items to loot etc.
- You can interact with the environment. Characters can smash down doors, or learn abilities to lay traps, push, pull enemies etc.
- There is an ongoing storyline between battles and your actions in battle can influence future events (like whether or not you saved a character will affect whether they join you after the battle, and they may be able to have special interactions later).

ONE BIG POINT: The graphics interface looks quite quaint and basic, but don't let this turn you off. There is fun to be had and more functionality than it suggests. Have fun!

Little biased as I'm a Kickstarter backer, but very happy with the game.

It's extremely similar to Fire Emblem (and somewhat related games, Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars, etc). You move your squad through the map, defeating enemies along the way and reaching the objective. It plays a bit like chess in that you need to protect certain units that can die extremely easily. Even the tanky units die in a few hits so you need to make walls or use terrain to avoid ways in which the enemy can hit you. Most of the difficulty comes from the fact that units die forever if they are killing in battle but you can play on easy mode without permadeath.

Telepath Tactics takes advantages of a lot of the small but interesting mechanics in Fire Emblem and expands on some of them, for example: being able to talk to enemies and neutral characters to convert them to your side during battle and destroying/pushing/pulling environmental objects strategically.

It also adds a lot of different skills and abilities - magic users have a variety of spells and healing while regular units can have skills such as sprint or motivate. There are also some interesting items (so far I bought the grappling hook, which lets you pull enemies towards you). Overall it feels like a game made with a lot of love and a lot of different things to explore.

Obviously the main issue is the graphics, as especially the UI looks pretty ugly. To be honest the in-game maps aren't that bad and the portraits grow on you after a while.

Definitely worth the price for any turn-based over a grid fantasy RPGs lover - where tactics really matters to win the battles. A lot of classes, environment intereactions, very nice mechanics, and an OK story.
It's definitely a great tribute to FFT/Vandal Hearts/Tactics Ogre, considering the whole game has been written from a solo developper. Buy it and support the game..so we may get new campaigns ;)

I have fond memories of games like Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle, Shining Force, Final Fantasy Tactics. What I loved about those games is that you had to play smart. Telepath Tactics captures that in oodles. This isn't a game you can run into willy-nilly and win. You must carefully command your troops across the battlefield. Using their unique abilites, strengths, weaknesses. All the while countering the enemies movements. With plenty of classes, abilities, and environmental hazards. Telepath Tactics brings plenty to the table. The combat itself is based on positioning and stat based damage. Keenly placing units to flank enemies and do devastating damage is required to win this game. Sadly Telepath Tactics is a very unappealing looking game. The terrain is flat and lifeless, the pixel characters lack personality. The combat animations are underwhelming. The only good thing about the art style are the Fire Emblem-esque avatars. While this isn't necessarily anything to break the game. The battles can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. It would've been nice to have had something pleasant to look at. Also a save and quit feature would've been great too. The game for the most part is designed well. With minor bugs that don't really affect gameplay all too much. With the map editor you've got plenty of replay value. If you find yourself really enjoying the game and want to get more out of it. In all the game is a great homage to TRPG's and Fire Emblem.
If you don't mind the graphics and are looking for a deep strategy game. Telepath Tactics is a good choice.

I made a video review to show off some of the features and gameplay of this game!

I hope you enjoy!

Great game from a series that has come a LONG way. I remember playing Telepath RPG via the Armor Games site years ago, and even then I really liked the originality of the setting and the tactical feel of the combat. Fast forward to this game, and I am really impressed with what the author has done. This game feels very polished and fluid. The world is well-concieved and enjoyable to be a part of. The portraits/graphics are great (for a lower budget indie game), the music is also stellar as well, but what really stands out is the strategy and tactics! It also reminds me a lot of Battle for Wesnoth more so than SSB, but to each their own.

Anyone who knows me will know that RPGs and turn-based strategy are what I like the most and that I primarily go for stuff that is stongly story driven. This game handles both elements very well and it's a testament to its strategic depth that, for once, I can honestly say that the combat is more engrossing than the plot (even though said plot is humorous and well written). I was very sceptical at first due to the recent FLOOD of indie rubbish and that the screenshots don't exactly make you want to rush to buy. Don't be put off by the graphics, the gameplay is SO good that it renders them irrelevant.

If you only buy one indie game this year then I would strongly suggest it be this one.

*edit* It can be unforgiving too. Only skip it if a strong cerebral challenge is not for you.

So excited to see this on Steam! I bought Telepath Tactics through early access, and I have to admit, I’d never played a strategy RPG before so I got killed at first. A lot. But a friend of mine had persuaded me to check it out on his computer, and, after my initial rough start, I got totally hooked. I love trying to figure out the best strategy in a battle, given the huge number of variables: number of characters, number of enemies, types of enemies, terrain, environmental obstacles, the huge range of abilities my characters have. It can be overwhelming at first, but it’s so much more fun! Now, even if I get killed (and I usually do the first time I try a battle), I’m that much more psyched to try again. The environmental interactions are great, too. They open up a whole new range of strategies you can employ, not to mention, throwing enemies off cliffs if deeply satisfying. I think the characters are really cute, too, and the story keeps me wanting to know what happens next. It’s also nice to see a game with a large contingent of female characters for once – especially main characters! I'm almost finished with the single player campaign on my early access copy, so I'm starting over on Steeam so I can play on all my computers. Now, to figure out how make mods … :)
