This one was enjoyable to me. This is not an AVGN episode but it does retain the humor of the series with all the low budget scenes and VFX I've come to expect of AVGN. A lot of references to his old AVGN videos and a lot of cool cameos, most of which you would recognise if you manage to watch some of those retro, gaming, movie review youtube channels. The creator of the ET games is even in the movie lol.

Get it if you're a fan of Jame's humor.

You will enjoy this movie if:

- You are a fan of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
- You are a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd

The movie is pratically a very long episode of AVGN heavily inspired by Pee-Wee. I've been a AVGN fan since he started & loved Pee-Wee all my life so this movie was fantastic to me.

Expect a ton of cheese & a ton of fun, it's worth a watch.

First of all, this is a low-budget film, and it shows. However, it was very much done in an intentional and tongue-in-cheek fashion. I honestly loved the practical effects and cheesy acting, simply for how refreshing it all was. The whole thing absolutely oozes B movie charm. I was cautiously optimistic going into it, given the generally mixed response it has received, but I left pleasantly surprised!

Deliberately made to appear low budget, but in a quality fashion. Will mostly appeal to AVGN fans, and those who don't watch his videos will mostly likely not get most of the references. Great film overall though.

What is Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie?

It is a movie made by James Rolfe aka the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) about the adventures of titular character when a fictional version of ET2 is to be released by a video game company that is deliberately made to suck even more than the original. The movie is done in a B-Movie style, with partially really obvious post-production effects, as often seen in the AVGN webisodes that can be seen on Cinemassacre or Youtube.

Now I had gotten the movie from another website where it included a big "Making Of" as bonus material, giving insight into the making of the movie, which is really worth watching. Unfortunately this seems to be missing on Steam, and actually I only own the movie here because it was in a movie bundle. So keep in mind that even though I can recommend the movie and therefor say "Yes" under the review, you do not get the best version here.

Note that the games in the story are completely made up, I might name them "ET" but in-story these are fictional games just clearly modeled after those real-life counterparts.
The story begins with the Nerd working at a video game store, when suddenly a copy of ET2 is given to him. Some undercover agent from the ET2 company gets in touch with him as well. Unfortunately this is also the biggest downside of the movie - the first 20 to 30 minutes are just boring to watch. After that, when the Nerd sets off into the desert of New Mexico to find a landfill of ET cartridges to hold an excavation there (which makes this movie a period piece as even before its release a real excavation was held there where indeed the cartridges were found). The military believes that the ET cartridges hold the secret to reach Area 51, and therefor tries to stop the Nerd and its friends, who set out to find one of the original creators of the game.
Between the paranoia of the military, the paranoia of the game creator and the hot desert, the viewer is left wondering if there is sexual tension or even a romance plot building up between the Nerd and the company spy, but in the end everything gets even bigger than expected, and unearthing the secrets behind the cartridge might have consequences not only for the Nerd and the miltary but the whole world...

Is the movie worth watching?
Well, if you like the AVGN or if you like B-Movies, absolutely! That is, if you can stand through the horribly boring beginning of the movie. I enjoyed most of the movie, although the false game names put me off from the suspension of disbelief I have otherwise for the Nerd web video series. However, the characters all have their distinctive attributes, although there is not much depth to be expected - what happens is Nerd humor, just on a bigger scale. If you want to take the movie seriously at any point, this is not for you. If you want to laugh at bad visual effects, paired with some cool gags and overall cheap atmosphere - go for this movie, it won't disappoint you!

Positive:
Nerd humor
Characters that all have a tick of their own
The movie becomes a gagfest enjoyable to Nerd fans
Cheap looking visual effects (Nerd style)

Negative:
First half hour is horrible
No real game titles (with one exception)
Cheap looking visual effects (that could have been more convincing)
If you don't like the AVGN humor or style, this is not for you
Steam version lacks bonus material

Specs:
The video gan be streamed in 360p, 540p, 720p and 1080p. The only language for both the video and audio is English. The only audio quality is 322 kbps, Surround 5.1 (tested only in 1080p resolution).

Recommended: As a movie, mostly. But the missing bonus material, especially the Making Of, is unforgivable.

A movie made for the hardest of die hard AVGN fans. I enjoy the hilarious AVGN videos on Cinnemassacre and the reviews done by Mike and James, but this movie is the worst. It's basically on par with the ♥♥♥♥ made by Asylum Films. The writing seems to have been done by fans or jokes developed in conversation which would be funny (you had to be there) when conceived, but delivery and timing are greatly off the mark. So coming off that, the worst thing about this movie is the acting. If the cast was of untrained actors, I would easily give it a pass because that would be funny but genuine. Instead, we get bad actors who think they can act.

Watch this movie to support James and Cinnemassacre. If you aren't aware of the world of Cinnemassacre, I would not recommend this to anyone.

What a shame.

As for the film itself, it is very hit and miss. If you are an AVGN fan, there are moments you will find funny. Fan or not, the storyline holding everything together is chaotic and weak. It seems some moments are in the movie merely as a plot twist, not because it makes sense or advances the story. If you can get it cheap, however, it's worth a watch.

What is unacceptable is the fact that instead of downloading the video to your PC, it requires streaming. That means if you don't have a good internet connection, good luck watching this in high definition. If they wanted to prevent piracy, they could have simply had online verification before starting the film. Instead this streaming has made trying to watch this movie a laggy mess. Plus, by the time the Steam version was released the film had already been pirated on multiple sites, it can be watched for free, so most people who are buying now are doing it to support the films creator (James Rolfe). So why punish legitimite viewers?

Went in expecting a B grade movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, and had some laughs during it and even being an AVGN fan I cannot say this movie was enjoyable as a whole. Way too many terrible attempts to pander to fans as hard as possible with jokes that fall flat compared to the ones that are actually funny. Alot of the positive reviews just seem to be people blindly loving it because they are fans of AVGN instead of seeing it for what it is. The movie just had so many cringeworthy moments it was a slog to watch. Alot of terrible characters, like the sidekick who just comes off trying too hard to act and be funny.
It does have a few charms and good bits. Like the silly, over the top and cheesy effects similar to bad but entertaining B grade horror movies and puppets that are awful but charming.
Bought the movie to suppport the AVGN as someone who enjoys his content, but could never bring myself to watch it again. Just painful.

I've seen every episode of the AVGN to date. I'm a devoted fan.

However, this movie was a load of putrid ♥♥♥♥ing dog ♥♥♥♥ shoved down my ear canal!

EDIT: Since this is the second review you see when you're on the "helpful" page, I've decided to add an actual review in here.

This movie has a horrible storyline. It's not nearly as funny as the web videos and the cursing isn't constructive. It just seems like it's a try-hard fan-made movie. The effects are putrid, but that was expected from a low-budget film like this. It's just ♥♥♥♥, stay away from it and watch the web videos.

Its a B movie. It was better than expected considering all the negative comments.
Regardless, in my view the Nerd deserved the small token of money this cost me anyway.
