Looks so adorable and polished that you'd think it'd be another Angry Birds type puzzle game that you can just turn off your brain and enjoy.

But in reality, it's a brain-punchingly hard puzzle game. Each puzzle introduces some new element, or new arrangement of elements, and you have to figure out the perfect technique to interact with it. You can easily spend half an hour just fiddling the birds around until you have a breakthrough and realize that you have to set one bird up just so, so that it can catch a falling block without the bird becoming trapped or unsaveable. Luckily, after the first few levels you can start skipping over levels, so if you don't reach a breakthrough you can just come back to it later. And when you finally complete a particularly tricky one, it really feels like you've accomplished something!

Also, the snakebirds make very silly noises that literally had me giggling aloud while playing.

Snakebird is, despite it's colourful appearance and charm, one of the hardest puzzle games on Steam, if not one of the hardest games.

I'm going to start this review by telling you to watch the first trailer provided for this game, as it explains the basic mechanics better than any text can do, and also highlights how incredibly complex such a simple game mechanic can be.

In terms of production quality, Snakebird is absolutely fantastic. The art is done with an incredible attention to detail and perfectly reflects the outward simplicity but underlying complexity of the puzzles themselves. Every object in the environment is meticulously designed and work together perfectly to create a cohesive minimalist design.

The music is done by Carl Karjalainen, and isn't too eye-catching (ear-catching?) - but this is probably a good thing, as if you're planning on completing Snakebird you're going to hear all of the tracks a lot of times.

But these are mostly besides the point - I don't know many people who buy a puzzle game for its soundtrack, so you're probably reading the reviews to find out what the puzzles are like. To be extremely blunt: if you don't enjoy feeling stupid, don't buy this game. It is INCREDIBLY difficult, to the point where even 10 levels in (out of slightly more than 50) it's already harder than the final levels of most other popular puzzle games. By the mid-game each step requires 50 steps of planning ahead to make sure you're not going to move yourself into a corner, and there's virtually no room for error with nearly every puzzle requiring nearly exact moves to complete it correctly.

It should be noted that this difficulty is NOT arbitrary or forced. The developers aren't making deliberately obtuse or tedious puzzles just to drag out the runtime, and every single puzzle makes complete sense once you work it out, using the relatively limited set of features in extremely clever ways.

Personally, I think that this game is fantastic, both in its production quality and in its fiendish difficulty, but it's definitely not for everybody. You have to absolutely love difficult puzzles to enjoy this game, and you'll get frustrated extremely quickly if you aren't used to that kind of challenge. If you are, though, there's basically no better option for training mental acuity.

Terribly clever little puzzles and bright shiny visuals.
Be warned - puzzles are not for the faint of resolve.

I'm genuinely impressed by this little puzzle game. The design of each level is incredibly clever, calculated in detail, which forces you to imagine possible paths. On top of challenging difficulty level, Snakebird offers pleasant and dynamic casual gameplay suitable for everyone.

I got stuck. I almost made a refund because of the incorrect claims in the negative reviews. Then I started quickly solving the puzzles that seemed "impossible"... and it turned out they are very easy once you understand what you're actually doing.
So I decided to help anyone who's on the fence and has read the negative reviews.

- It's not true that the game doesn't slowly introduce you to the basics
- It's not true that the game doesn't have different locations with different gameplay themes

- IT IS true, that the game gets difficult very, very quick
- IT IS true, that if you believe that you are smart, and in reality you're not, the game will crush you without mercy

- It is not true that the puzzles are complex, but random. No, they are very meaningful, but if you're not smart enough, you won't be able to understand the meaningful pattern behind the solution, even if someone shows it to you. Just like any other difficult logic game, you have to visualize what you want, your final goal, and what prevents you from getting there, but here you also have to rely on your spacial reasoning and that's differently developed in different people.

There's a risk that the game may not be for you. Have you finished "English Country Tune" or "Stephen's Sausage Roll"? What about the hardest secret levels in "Sokobond"? Was the last level of "Open Doors 2" relatively easy for you? What about any Alan Hazelden game, like "Boxes love boxing gloves"? You didn't need a walkthrough to get through "The Witness", did you? If the answer to any of these questions is "Yes", than go ahead. If not, try the demo. (There is a demo, even if it's not on Steam). And don't give up immediately. Give it time. Good luck.

This is a *seriously* awesome puzzle game.

DO NOT let the cutesy look fool you, some of the puzzle are incredibly devious.
It makes masterful use of the mechanics, in ways that will have you thinking some of the levels are impossible ... but they're not.

Definitely worth the asking price.
