Play Dev Guy

About This Game

Being a developer for games is difficult. It's even harder when you are an indie developer. In Dev Guy, you play the roll of Warren (an independent developer) just trying to get his game on the app store before his game license expires. It sounds simple, but becomes complex quickly when his car goes missing, and his data disappears with it. Will warren get his car back? Join Warren as he tries to retrieve his game data while solving puzzles, hacking other developer's computers, breaking windows, and yelling at his friend Cabe. If you've played classic puzzle adventure games and feel the need for more, this game might be right up your alley. Using the power of the UDK, Dev Guy brings you the most graphically underwhelming game of this year.

A fun little satirical exploration of a few game genres, for a single sitting.

The mini games are varied, short and fun. The navigation is a pain, as you must release one direction to move in another (so no zig-zagging). It's also frustrating that you must use the mouse to click through dialogue, instead of utilising the 'inspect' button. Since I was using WASD to move (rather than the arrows), I kept on trying to use items with Q instead of R, but that's my problem. The game is built around many cultural refences that have aged very quickly, so I wouldn't be surprised if they went over a lot of people's heads these days. "Your" is also used incorrectly every time, but that may be the joke (though still frustrating).

In short, a fun little distraction with acheivements. Expect a student project and you won't be disappointed. Also it includes ponies, so gold star from me.

'Aight, this game is pretty fun. :4
It's graphics are nice, not really, "Good," but yeah, they're nice. :3
All the mini games are fun, and it has good humor. ;D
People like to say that the Cyber Pony mini game has glitched out button controls, but that's not really true. I think they're just salty, which is understandable, because that game is really hard. :4
There are 7 achievements, and they're all fun to get and not too hard to firgure out.
It's a pretty great game, so get it. ;D

A last resort game. When you dont know what else to play and you want 7 easy achievements. The game isn't really that long. I think most will finish it between 10/20 minutes. It has a very short story and the puzzle pony game in the game is better than the game itself, which is kinda weird. For me it was worth playing to get the 7 achievements and completing the game. However when I finished I instantly deleted it and I wont play it again. It's free however so it's not a waste of money...

Not particularly bad. Could be better. But the game is too darn short. Sorry.

After reading so many positive reviews for this game I thought I'd love it as I gained an entertaining and heartfelt insight into the struggle of creating something in such a difficult and heavily scrutinised medium. Instead, what I got was a slow, trudging mini-game collection that seemed more concerned with poking fun at others rather than contributing anything worthwhile of its own.

Warren is a game dev who's lost all the data for his current project the day before it's to be uploaded to the app store. Not wanting to be empty-handed, he raids the computers of all the other devs who live in the same building and hacks their roms to claim them as his own. What follows is half an hour of plodding around an apartment complex to gain access to mini-games satirising various trends in the industry. That in itself could have made for some astute and hilarious commentary as it lambasted some of the worst aspects of gaming (like shoddy business practices from certain publishers or DLC and pre-order culture or overly sensitive gamers who'll tear apart anything and anyone they even remotely disapprove of for the slightest, pettiest of reasons), but rather than take aim at some of the biggest offenders, it comes across more as somewhat small-minded as it reinforces some of those very issues and berates anything that doesn't fit into its narrow view of being acceptable.

I've no particular love for "bronies" or "otakus" or the likes of David Cage and Phil Fish, but I don't feel any particular need to sh*t all over them either and belittle their work or contributions, or anyone who praises them, either. Meanwhile, this game seems to revel in doing just that. I wouldn't say it comes across as bitter or "sour grapes" at all, more like someone being childish as they point and laugh at something they don't like rather than address any of the important issues that really deserve being held up and ridiculed.

As much as it tried to be funny, given how poorly it decides to choose its targets, I just couldn't get into it and its material at all (or even any of the not very good mini-games, for that matter). They could have made some really great, biting points about the shortcomings of the video game industry had they turned their focus there, but given that they seem way more interested in admonishing the works of others while making tons of tired references to better games and the pop culture that surrounds it, this really feels like part of the problem more than anything else.

For achievement hunters looking for a free and easy 100%, this is probably 30 minute's worth of content you could put up with. For everyone else, I really wouldn't bother.

Dev Guy is about the life of an indie developer who sneakily hacks the computers of his colleagues, stealing ideas to create his own game.

A great tribute to Greenlight.

I got up this morning to work on my game, saw this, decided to check it out. Suddenly I dont feel like making my game anymore.

It even has a virtual catgirl and a body pillow, this game hits too close to home.

I have quite a handful of indie games in my library, so I have a bit of a soft spot for them one might say. This game highlights the experiences, struggles, and even stereotypes that seemingly come along with the indie game development community. It's free, so you truly can't go wrong, but I think most people will really enjoy the hour or so of gameplay that they get out of this.

Better than I initially thought it'd be, but it's still pretty cringy. It's entertaining enough for a half hour and you even get some achievements to boot. Some of the jokes are okay, but others seem really forced. It was free though, so I can't really complain.

I honestly thought that this would be the worst game on steam. i only downloaded it to make fun of it. it turned out to be a provocative game that goes through the struggles of every indie developers life. It has both laughs and tears and will make you want to die at some points. It is all worth it in the end because you get to help one developer live out his life long dream of publishing an indie game. Also you get a prize at the end.

Some cool insider jokes (bronies/pony fandom, Phil Fish & Fez, the repeating dull patterns in action games, etc.). Nice parody of today's programming & publishing process of video games, it's free, it's fun for about 30-45 minutes, it's small (around 600MB): seriously, just try it.

If the developer reads these reviews: congratulations on your Steam release from a fellow aspiring game developer/programmer :)
