What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been working on Dead TrailZ since we made finals in the The Walking Dead game jam in 2013. Between weapons, maps, multiplayer and extended Twitch support, help us make the right calls for the final weeks.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Three months if we are not seeing major changes.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We would really like to implement additional weapons and try a few things with the AI rules. Both will enable new strategy level approaches.
Multiplayer Coop, where one plays the sniper and the other player controls the runner would be a ton of fun if there is interest.
If you are streaming, let your audience identify the soon-to-be hotspots for you to jump to.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Dead TrailZ is fully playable with two maps, both in endless runner and in strategy mode (15 levels per map). Graphic settings are available and should make the game run at 60fps on a broad range of machines. Full controller support with aim control is also part of the first EA version.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Depending on the scope we are going to take on during EA the price might go up, but not more than 20% to the current sales price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'll be happy to discuss changes and add-ons through the forums & email. Feel free to ping us on Facebook or Twitter, too.”

Big Early Access Update

Wrapping up, here is a look at the new single/multi-player mode.

Coming end of April*, see gifs below!

You start with the sniper rifle. But now, the runner will find new guns, ammo & train fuel in the boxes. When he makes it back, he'll hand everything over to you.
We killed the shop. No more coins.
Now, you gather experience based on your shooting skills. With enough experience, you can pick a boost between rounds. And stack them!
Think Nuclear Throne's rogue-like approach meets first person shooter. Every game plays out with a different set of weapons, ammo & boosts and it is so much fun.

This is the main mode going forward. All weapons, new boosts and the new map 3 are in there, as well as 2-player online coop, where one plays the runner.

Shotgun Preview (incl glimpse of a mini boss placeholder zombie):

Sentry Preview (one of my favs. so useful):

Gatling/Minigun Preview (another fav). Also map 3:

Handover Screen, nice haul from the first run:

My fav tower in map 3, looking down the mountain:

And finally, map 2, multiplayer, playing as runner:

Fun fact: As of today, we have 488 commits on this update. We know you would love to get stuff into your hands earlier, but a completely new game mode & multiplayer means tearing everything apart. We are two devs working full time on Dead TrailZ and are committed to make it a shiny example of what Early Access can do for a game.
Thanks for your support and feedback that brought us here. If you like this please share.

EA Update

We launched, saw your videos, heard your feedback and tried a few things, so here we go:
1. Very pleased to announce we are implementing Multiplayer
2. Even more pleased to announce a rad new Singleplayer mode. Fight through a series of maps and see if you can make it to the end.
Where supply boxes are filled with ammo, weapons and other useful items. Pick boosts wisely when leveling up. Choose to play as a runner (and some times we'll force you to). New weapons & zombies and game mechanics, thanks to the great ideas you guys contributed!
3. Thrilled to announce this new progressive mode will be Singleplayer AND online coop, where one plays the sniper, the other one the runner

Stay tuned!

About This Game

"Dead TrailZ captures a slice of the zombie apocalypse beautifully." - Eurogamer
"I just like sniping as a game dynamic, and I liked how the game was trying to combine that with tactical placement.” - TechCrunch

Escape the Apocalypse. Zipline between vantage points surrounding the battle field and use heavy weapons to cover your teammate on longer and longer supply runs.

Basic rules:
- Runner starts and ends at the train station
- Runner has a certain amount of ammunition which refills for each run
- Predict the runner's path and pave the way for him to return safely

The main game is about scavenging a series of maps, finding enough fuel & weapons in each stage to progress to the next.
Your runner finds supplies & fuel in the boxes, which he hands over to you after each run.
If things get tight, call the runner back any time.
Gather XP with your shooting kills to unlock perma-boosts and make sure to pick up some helicopter drops.

The first two maps can also be played in an endless practice scenario & also feature 15 strategic levels, each with a unique solution path that requires more than just shooting. Levels have a fix setup of where survivors come in and where the zombies are and can only be resolved with strategic and well-timed use of the available weapons and tools.

Dead TrailZ is a tower defense shooter game where you are a sniper man and should kill the zombies to help escape the people.

This game is now in Early Access so now you can play only two modes: runner or strategy. In a runner mode your target is to protect a men who run at the map from one point to other from the zombies. This man has a gun, but he has a certain amount of ammunition. You should protect as long as possible to get higher soccer. Also you have some quest what if you done get extra coins.

In a strategy mode you should protect a survivors and reach all goals to get 3 stars. In this you have 30 levels (each map 15)

The sounds is okey. Graphic looks good, carton stylized. Also this game has leaderbords and twich feature.

So my verdict

+leaderboards
+steam achievements
+interesting concept
+nice graphic
+multiplayer in future

-at the moment few content
-some bugs
-animations a bit week
- no steam trading cards

So i think this game is not bad, have enough good potential, this game now in Early Access so the developers in a future add to this game even more content. Game have enough interesting concept, so i think you should try this one if you like a games with zombie and want try something new.

Dead TrailZ:
~~~~~~~~~
Armed with a machine gun, EMP shotgun, mines and smoke grenades, you are a spotter / sniper. You have to protect your runner - make sure his runs are successful by picking up all supply boxes and return to the train without being torn apart by your friendly Zombies!
Dead Trailz is a First Person Shooter/Tower Defence game which offers 2 types of modes in this current version (early access). You will be able to play either runner or strategy modes.
In the runner mode, you will have to protect your faithful friend as long as you can, so he can pick up as many supply boxes as possible without being eaten by despicable zombies. In this mode, you will have tasks to achieve so you can earn extra coins which you can dispatch at the shop to add ammunition to your weaponry, especially the mine and EMP bullets. Essentially, you will be able to move yourself to several vantage points on the map so you can effectively protect your runner by shooting at the upcoming wave of zombies. Your runner will have a limited amount of ammunition and he will be able to take care of himself until he runs out of bullets. If he is caught by Zombies, well, it will be game over. Also, within the action, choppers will come regularly and will drop crates and barrels. Shoot all crates before they hit the ground and you will receive extra mines or coins. Barrels are like bombs - shoot them when zombies approach them and you will probably hit a strike! If you reach a certain score, you will unlock an additional difficulty level.
In strategy mode, you have to make sure all survivors reach the train station and jump up onto the wagon to score 3 stars. The further you go, the harder it will become to save them all.
Dead TrailZ has cartoon–style graphics which add to the fun component of the game. The controls are fine and the game runs very well.
Positives:
~~~~~~~

- Fun and addictive gameplay
- In game tasks to achieve
- Cartoon style of graphics
- Achievements

Negatives:
~~~~~~~~
- No trading cards
- I’ll like to see more maps
Dead Trailz is seriously fun to play and I can’t wait to see additional maps. I want to help gather as many supplies as possible.
8/10
It's okay.
Cons
The scope aiming is ♥♥♥♥ing atrocious with a sort of horrible dead zone in the middle and movement made to feel like your trying to aim in an 8bit shooter. ''No scoping'' is made not much better by very heavy mouse smoothing with no option to turn it off. On top of that, the game breaks down into a horrible texture♥♥♥♥™ every time I try to change the video quality presets. The animations are unfortunately sub-par although not gamebreakingly so, and the zombie Ai seems to have a certain preference for well... let's just say ''back door fun''...
Pros
On the bright side, it's a unique idea where you are put into the shoes of the person providing the backup or ''killingstreak'' instead of the person directly in danger of getting there ♥♥♥ eaten out and getting turned into a festering piece of rotting flesh, where you have an almost sometimes isometric/top-down view of the battlefield, and have to make stratigic decisions based upon clearing a path for your little green shirted friend. The music while rather generic zombie shooterish, is pretty good and can at times provide a nice brooding sense of tension. Overall I apreciate the developers mixing it up a little although as a highly score based game it's not really for me.
TL;DR
7.5/10 Would get my ♥♥♥ eaten out by constipated zombies again.
FULL REVIEW
Dead TrailZ is part arcade snipey fun, part tower defense strategy. Use your wits as well as reflexes to protect survivors or supply runners as they run through zombie infested streets. This is a first person shooter with a twist. You are only able to stand on one rooftop at a time, ziplining between points on the map if there is zipline access between them. Utlizing the various perspectives, and items, you will have to quickly clear a path.
While it is the kind of game that is easy to grasp, as you progress, or attempt higher scores, how you approach the mission will affect the length and success of your efforts. There's more entertainment than I expected in this one. The developer has also promised more maps and content in the future so this is an easy recommend to any FPS/TD fan out there in the present.
Pro's
- Tower Defense-esque positioning system is a very creative take on the zombie shooting genre.
- Arcade style fun, pick and play, and before you know it you'll be trying this every day for a better run.
- Blowing up zombies, does it get old?
Con's
- Kind of cheesy animations
- lack of explanations for the most part (although some trial and error and you'll get the hang of it)
- Mr. Green (the runner) is kind of a tart.
- Needs more content.
Dead TrailZ is a Tower Defence game where you’re the towers, you zip-line between multiple advantage points and rain fire on your foes. Missions revolve around killing zombies while protecting survivors as they either evacuate areas or collect resources. Your weapons include an Assault Rifle, Mines, EMP Bazooka and Smoke Grenades to guide your allies.
The game contains a’ Skirmish’ mode were you protect a single survivor as they collect resources, it’s a bit like your classic ‘Horde’ mode. ‘Strategy’ mode pits you in multiple predefined situations by limiting the enemy spawns, setting certain spawn locations, limited shooting locations and limited access to equipment, think of it as a ‘Trial’ mode. These two game modes take place over two separate maps, one centred around a set of buildings, while the over in an open country/rural town.
It has a cool feature where you can link your Twitch profile to your account, allowing people in your chat to appear above the heads of the Zombies, but being a nobody and this game not being fully released yet I was unable to test this feature, seems really cool though.
Currently the game is in Early Access so we have to view it for what it is currently + future promise. As it stands the game is quite basic, I did a majority of the Strategy missions within an hour (they’re all very similar atm), and got to a point in the Skirmish mode where I felt I had enough. The Zombies have limited movement and maybe even missing animations, while the gun play feels a little floaty, I can’t quite put my finger on it but if you watch the gameplay you’ll see the camera continue to move even though I’ve stopped moving my mouse. In saying that I think it’s an interesting pick-up if you’re into Early Access, there seems to be some promise with the amounts of Zombies and Survivors on screen at once and wacky elements such as the Mines and EMP Bazooka, which is where I hope they take the game. Currently it’s only single player, but I think it’d do wonders if you could add a friend to join in on the fun, you would be able to get further + it gets very chaotic which are always great moments with friends.
Atm I’m going to have it as a recommendation due to it being Early Access & future potential. It’s over the top with its look and weapons, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. The promise of more levels and possibly more objective types also is something the game needs to stop it from being stale. If you’re looking for gameplay of both Skirmish and Strategy I have that in the video above and several over on the community hub & my YouTube channel. If you’re not a fan of unfinished games I’d skip it for now, just keep it on your follow list and follow the game through its Early Access cycle.
Gameplay explains this game best – https://youtu.be/TnY-QJrDvXE
Do you give a game a thumbs down for being thoroughly competent but utterly unremarkable in every single way? I don't know. I'd rather not. Dead TrailZ and games like it are really the reason that Steam needs a 'Meh' button or at least that sideways thumb that Roman emperors used to make while they were deciding whether a gladiator deserved to suffer their opponent's gruesome fatality move or not.
It's a sniper game. With zombies. And not a lot else. You can either choose to partake in Runner Mode (protect a luminously dressed imbecile from afar as he scuttles around the town for supplies) or the slightly more engaging Strategy Mode (aid groups of survivors in escaping the map via missions with various special conditions).
Although still in Early Access, the first issue you'll come across is that the tangle of alleys in the centre of the game's first map are practically impossible to see into from any vantage point. If your runner or your survivors wind up in there, you'd better hope the dead haven't gotten there first or you'll be treated to an elaborate camera pan of your ward being messily devoured. And I do mean messily. I don't want to lower the tone here but many of the undead in this game seem to be drawn to eating the, uh... the inner buttocks of their victims. Whether that's because it's the centre of the character model or not, I don't know. It started to make me feel sick after a while.
On the plus side, Dead TrailZ tries its hardest to escape its budget trappings and oversaturated genre with at least a basic stab at replayability; there's random bonus jobs to fulfill and the strategy missions do a fair job at keeping you engaged with inventive objectives and the challenge of pulling off a perfect run. It's fine. It works. But it does belong in Early Access while it discovers some sort of individuality.
You can check out my fun with it below.
Dead Trailz is a Zombie Tower defense game in Early Access.
So far there are 2 play modes, Strategy mode and Runner mode.
Strategy mode you clear the way for survivals to run to safety from some tower positions.
In Runner mode, you snipe zombies to keep the runner safe while he collect crates around the map.
Heres some gameplay:
Atm I’m going to have it as a recommendation due to it being Early Access & future potential. It’s over the top with its look and weapons, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. The promise of more levels and possibly more objective types also is something the game needs to stop it from being stale. If you’re looking for gameplay of both Skirmish and Strategy I have that in the video above and several over on the community hub & my YouTube channel. If you’re not a fan of unfinished games I’d skip it for now, just keep it on your follow list and follow the game through its Early Access cycle.
A very nice comicbook style on rails zombie shooter. Fun gameplay, could do with more content, but with a very proactive developer and in early access so we have great potential here. Check out my video for a more detailed look.
Dead Trailz is a Zombie Tower defense game in Early Access.
So far there are 2 play modes, Strategy mode and Runner mode.
Strategy mode you clear the way for survivals to run to safety from some tower positions.
In Runner mode, you snipe zombies to keep the runner safe while he collect crates around the map.
Heres some gameplay:
