What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We believe that by releasing in EA we will make a better game. EA player feedback is invaluable in that it allows us to listen to what flight simmers think and want, which is then reflected through development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our development road-map has a player reaction focus so the amount of time spent in EA largely depends on them.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Development reflects EA feedback and requests. The features list in the 'About this game' section below describes what's available now and what else will be added before we transition to v1.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“CAP2 is currently a single player game with fully immersive simulation and strategic gameplay. Again - see the 'About this game' section for more detail on what's currently in-game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we add new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are closely monitoring the community forums, hubs, blogs and social media channels - we cannot respond to EVERY query or bug report, we've already learnt that's impossible! But rest assured we are observing, we will answer through improving the game and communicating what we've done!

We have a number of key communications channels:

v810.7 - Live in all branches now

Ok, after a short run of updates, v810.7 is now live in all branches. Here's the entries from the Dev Sit Rep detailing the changes if you missed them:

16th Nov:
Hi All

v810.5 was uploaded this morning followed a few hours later by v810.6 (you wait ages for a bus...)

v810.5 was mostly a bug fix build, notable changes include:

Controls: Control and shift on mapped control keys are now saved.
Controls: OEM keys are labelled correctly.
Controls: Added default mappings for keyboard, gamepad, joystick.
HARM: firing crash fixed.
HARM Mission: mission starts.
Terrain LOD: settings bug fixed. You can select Low, Medium, High, Ultra.
Flight model: fix for a drag calculation.
Time Of Day controls: added to adjust current time and environment lighting.

We've also produced this useful graphic outlining the current keyboard default controls. We will be adding this to our quick-start guide shortly and updating it as we move through EA.

V810.6 added fixes for fullscreen monitor selection. When in fullscreen mode, changing the selected output monitor is immediate. Also the monitor label has an index added to distinguish between identically named monitors (generic pnp display...)

While working on default controls I realised none of the controller manufacturers seem to use the correct USB usage codes for controller buttons or axes/sliders which have a specific function. There are codes defined for controls such as throttle, chaff, flaps, trim etc. It'd be great if they used them where relevant as auto mapping a controller would be pretty simple. Anyway, I'm adding default settings for common controllers which will be included in coming updates. I've also begun work on the axis response curves UI.

The TOD/lighting controls are pretty cool. Give them a try, you'll probably find yourself constantly tweaking the light levels. Once the updated day/night sky shader is complete you'll be able to adjust the full 24hr cycle, plus advancing mission time will be added.

The terrain LOD settings fix/update improves the appearance of distant lights popping into view and fixes an issue where extra scenery was being drawn.

Update pace should be pretty good going forward as there are lots of smaller updates (mostly mission related) in the pipeline.

17th Nov:
v810.7 is live in all branches now.

The debug keys for time shifting and cloud regeneration are available in Controls->Misc
You can accelerate time from 4x to /32 (decelerating 32x was useful for testing things like gear animations)

A crash on starting Hawaii free flight is fixed.

You can now add your own cockpit photo. There's a directory 'Mods - Examples' in the game folder which details how to add your photo.

v810.4 AVAILABLE NOW IN THE BETA BRANCH

v810.4 is now available in the beta branch, which you'll find in your Steam client when you buy CAP2. After we've ironed out any initial bugs we will push the update across to the default branch. If you would like us to notify you when we do this please submit your email address here:
http://combatairpatrol2.com/stay-updated
(Please note: If you have previously submitted your email address to us you to not need to do so again).

We will continue adding lots more eye candy and footage to this article over the coming days detailing the new improvements the update brings so stay tuned!

Terrain editor
We've completed a lot of background work on the terrain editor which means we can now rapidly improve areas of interest from the base imagery and OSM data. We intend to make the editor available in the future for people to customise and share terrains, together with a mission editor.

Training missions
We've used the improved editor to begin building the Yuma training missions. You may discover the newly populated target ranges. We expect to complete these missions from 810.5 onward.

Mission planner Improvements
We've fixed some of the issues with the mission planner and it also now shows elevation as well as coast line. You will see that the map now includes most of the UK and the Yuma Map extends up to the Grand Canyon. In the future we will also extend the satellite imagery and OSM data - either through DLC or a future update.

Easter Egg
Have you found it? Try the UK map!

Richer environment
As you can see from the screenshot below of the Harrier leaving Khasab we have added thousands more buildings and lots of additional vegetation. You may be aware (and have contributed - thank you!), this is done by adding more OpenStreetMap data. It's been done as an aside and hasn't impacted general development. Abu Musa and Kaneohe Bay are also now more significantly built up. We've also added a host of custom objects including power lines, lighthouses, water tanks, ATC towers, rigs etc.

Fuel Tanks
As you can also see from this screen, the Harrier now has external fuel tanks, including associated fuel flow logic and displays.

Terrain Lights Promo
We've added lighting to roads, runways, taxiways and buildings, illuminating villages and cities which really adds to immersion. You can also see from this promo that we have improved vegetation, adding different trees and increasing their density.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeAuQ6urkBc&feature=youtu.be
There is also a hint to the mission play we have been working on, which has been a major focus of this update. As you can see briefly in this video its become fairly perilous flying over Abu Musa, now with populated target ranges. More coming on that soon.

Cockpit illumination
As you can see from these before and after shots, the Harrier cockpit now has night illumination. It's easy to see dials/gauges around sunset. You can separately adjust the lighting intensity for self illuminated instruments and the cockpit floodlights. The full day/night cycle will come in a subsequent update. We've got a sky shader to complete which bounces a lot of rays through the atmosphere and produces great sunsets and sky throughout the 24hr cycle.

About This Game

Feel the power of flying the AV8B Harrier II. A flight and naval combat simulator with mission planner and fully dynamic open ended campaign. CAP2 is a middle ground simulator, you won't need to read a 300 page manual to get off the ground, nor will you be carrying dozens of missiles when you fire it up.

CAP2 uses a custom built engine that delivers a totally unique, immersive and realistic experience. After initial flight and tactical training you will be pitched into an immersive scenario against aggressive ground, sea and air based enemies. Use the fully articulated cockpit, your skills as a pilot and your tactical awareness to engage in dogfights, carry out ground attacks and command your fleet to ultimately ensure the safety of your comrades and the final capitulation of the enemy.

Strategic decisions such as commanding your fleet on the tactical map and your performance in the air will affect the final outcome: Go 'gung ho' with a full out assault and the outcome will be in the balance or plan ahead and the end result will be your ultimate victory!

Should you buy CAP2 now?
If you don’t yet own CAP2 obviously we’d love for you to join the crew. We encourage you to read the features list carefully, particularly with reference to what's currently enabled so that you have the correct expectation.

Key Features - All of the features listed here are currently available unless otherwise stated. They are perhaps not 100% polished (after all its EA!) but enough to give players an idea of where the game is heading.
