ROK Update R9

This release contains some fixes for new bugs and exploits that were found which affected different areas of the game. Official servers have been wiped, as it's the first Tuesday of the month. We do not believe this update will require a wipe for community servers.

Please post any bugs you find, or issues with the game in the bug forums:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/344760/discussions/0/

We continue to work with EAC on further changes to prevent hacking. Please remember that any hackers caught will have their access to the game perma-banned.

If you want to report an exploit, or hacker, and learn about our process, please read this thread:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/344760/discussions/4/523890528707976945/

Please follow this guide for updating your community server:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=435654886

Please continue to list bugs, balancing thoughts, and email us about exploits. We plan to do a wipe on the first Tuesday of each month to keep the servers running well, and the game fresh. We expect the next wipe to be on September 6th.

- Various Exploit fixes
- Fix the issues with contested areas and crests
- Blocks that are placed and removed in the same frame will no longer spend and refund unpredictable amounts of blocks.
- Fixed a hardware-dependent calculation that would cause the server time to drift while playing.
- Items that are dropped from the inventory with an incorrect stack count will now be corrected by the server before entering the loot bag.
- Items that are dropped from the inventory with a stack count of zero will no longer create a loot bag.
- Players being kicked for invalid inventory transactions will no longer show a global kick message, and now receive a reason for the kick.

Thanks for Playing,

ROK R8 Update

- Just a notification to community server owners that there are some changes with this update for running multiple servers, please view:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=435654886

*Update* - Crownland plague village loot bug fixed in a small patch.

*Update* - This is the second time we've posted this update. The previous one had some issues surrounding connection stability & event handling, but we believe we may have fixed the issues now. Update requires a wipe as well (due to R7 exploits being fixed), however, its community servers choice if they wish to wipe.

This release contains some fixes for bugs and exploits that were found which affected different areas of the game. Many back-end networking functions have also been changed to make the game more secure. Official servers have been wiped. We do not believe this update will require a wipe for community servers. Our ping protection system has been upgraded as well, as a result we've also made the majority of official servers ping-protected. If you cannot play on those, we are still running non-ping protected servers, and there are many different community servers with different ping limits that can also be played on.

Please continue to list bugs and email us about exploits. We thank everyone for your information you've sent in so far. Normally we do a wipe on the first Tuesday of each month, however, due to the delay in this wipe, we expect the next wipe to be on August 2nd.

- Fixed known exploits
- Fixed iron resource node decals stretching when hit
- Fixed iron resource node harvested model bad specular values
- Fixed bug where water splash audio wasn't effected by any volume sliders
- Hit reaction animations are now less intense
- Fix for bow strings and low framerates
- Switched the Steam Authentication on the ROk Servers to use a more secure method of authentication.
- Added a connection-interrupted screen that blocks input on the client when they have not received or sent messages for more then 5 seconds.
- Reduced the length of the initial Reign Of Kings logo when starting the game.
- Fixed popups not always showing when you get disconnected from a server.
- Ping protection system has been upgraded
- The game time shared between the server and its clients is now more accurate, depending on hardware. This affects some progress bars and events seen in-game.
- Reporting a player is now blocked for 5 minutes after it has been submitted, instead of blocking when the report menu is opened.
- Players will no longer see error messages involving the Ancient Sword or Ancient Crown when a different player caused them.
- Control settings have been reset to ensure that the mouse look axes have no dead zone by default.
- An input blackout will now appear after being disconnected from the server for 5 seconds. Automatic disconnects still occur at 30 seconds.
- The duration and threshold for auto-banning players are now available in the server settings.
- Changed rock colliders to be convex colliders
- Create a filter to make sure placing inside convex colliders should not happen
- Fix player name when a player is kicked from a guild
- Event handling and network performance has been improved

About This Game

Struggle to survive in a harsh medieval world. Hunt wildlife, mine resources, build structures, and craft weapons and armor in order to protect yourself. You may form a guild, bring war to all opposition, and try to seize the throne and become king!

In Reign of Kings we allow you to collect resources and craft a wide variety of items needed to build a vast and powerful kingdom. We were primarily inspired by Rust & Chivalry in the development of this game.

In addition to standard resources, you may compete over the Ancient Throne which resides in a throne room which overlooks the island. All players who are not part of the King's Guild are taxed on the resources they collect.

The development of a melee combat system adds a gritty and visceral feeling to Reign of Kings that will allow players to become deeply immersed in a realistic and intense medieval survival experience.

The world itself is designed to inspire competition and struggles for power. Resource locations strategically spread throughout the game will create inequity and envy. Players will have the ability to make war, or even capture and hold other players in order to get what they want. Each player will have the power to decide the fate of the kingdom, or choose to entirely forego the responsibility of ruling the kingdom and roam the land as a freeman.

CAPTURE

Players have the ability to capture, hold, and execute other players. The player can capture them with rope or iron shackles. Once shackled, a player is no longer able to access their inventory aside from their orifice slot. The captured player's inventory is accessible for the captor to search them.

Additionally, a rope will be attached to a prisoner which will allow them to be pulled in any direction their captor wishes. In order to avoid severe grieving situations, players can hide a sharp stone or lock pick in their orifice. This "hidden" item can help them escape capture or commit suicide.

PUNISHMENT & DEATH

Punishment & Death Once the player has control of a captive, there are several options available for managing a prisoner. Options range from simply locking them in a cage or dungeon, public humiliation in the pillory, or simply executing them.

THE ANCIENT THRONE

The Ancient Throne can be claimed by any player. Holding the Ancient Throne will grant its owner dominion over the entire map (change name of realm) and taxation rights over every other player. The King of the Ancient Throne will receive the ability to collect the resource tax from every player within the game by visiting the Ravens Treasure Tree. The ravens automatically collect taxes in the game (behind the scenes of course, sneaky little things), and place them in the chests in their Treasure Tree.

In addition, the King of the Ancient Throne will have access to the Ancient Sword and the Ancient Crown.

PRODUCTION & REFINING STATIONS

Players will have the ability to collect resources and to craft them into useful items or building materials. Additionally, the progression mechanic for being able to craft higher valued items will be reliant on upgrading production stations to a higher level. (Need a better quality sword? Upgrade your anvil.) Production and refining stations can craft or refine items as long as there are resources available unless ordered to do otherwise. This allows the player the freedom to do other things while his kingdom remains productive.

COLLECTION STATIONS

Collection stations can be placed for grain and water. Collection stations will passively produce raw materials given they have enough fuel.

These collection stations will be fully interactive and if left un-defended will offer a nice target for unscrupulous or enemy players. With this in mind, the player will want to protect their resources.

SIEGE EQUIPMENT AND RAIDING BASES

Once the players build stone walls and iron doors, players will not be able to simply bash their way inside. Players will now need to employ one of many different techniques for entry.

The ranged option is to build trebuchets and launch large stones from afar at your opponent's castle. Players must place a counterweight to offset their projectile weight in order to get the range and destruction power they need from the stone they are launching. Players may also rotate the trebuchet. This alignment takes some practice but is very rewarding when set correctly.

Players may choose to go a more stealthy route by crafting lock picks. Lock picks, however, are very hard to craft, and do not work on iron doors and iron gates.

Players who like it up close and personal may use the explosive keg, which takes a very large amount of resources to craft, and you'll need a few of them to get through multi-layered walls.

Players defending a base may employ their own trebuchet or set up a ballista which is great for killing other players at range.

FIRST PERSON COMBAT

Our combat systems allow melee and ranged combat to take center stage when war breaks out. Inspired by games like Chivalry, Reign of Kings' combat system is being tuned for satisfying, fast paced action. Players fight over the scarce resources and face off to defend or capture the throne.

MELEE

Players equip brutal weapons and use mouse buttons in an attempt to chop, slice, & stab through an opponent. Players will want to upgrade their weaponry to inflict the highest amount of damage as melee combat will always be dangerous and unpredictable. Armor will be highly prized in Melee as it will keep you in a fight much longer.

We support delimbing and decapitation of an opponent to represent the visceral and brutal experience of medieval close-quarters warfare. A variety of period realistic weapons and armor will be available for the player to craft as they progress toward elder content.

RANGED

Ranged fighting in ROK will encompass the use of the bow, crossbow, javelin, and throwing stones. A good way for a player to stay alive in a fight during the early game will be to use ranged weaponry and speed. Keeping out of sword range from a marauding knight is always a good idea, but even more so if you’re not equipped with the quality of armor that can absorb a hit or two.

A simple bow and spear may be capable of taking down wild game, but may not provide enough piercing power to get through the finest plate male. It’ll be important for the player to learn what kinds of weaponry are most effective in a fight as it will be critical knowledge to stay alive and have impact in a fight. Higher tier Steel-pointed javelins will be able to pierce some armors, but the crossbow is the best option for punching a hole through the most heavily plated opponent at range.

The general rules of ranged weaponry will apply in ROK to determine functionality. The bow will have the highest accuracy and reload speed, the crossbow will have greatest piercing power but is slow to reload, and thrown weapons will have the highest damage output, but are for short range use only.

LOOT

ROK features a plague-ridden village that was cursed and abandoned by the old gods. This village features plague-ridden villagers, loot crates, and some high-end loot drops. It is dangerous to be in the village for long periods of time due to the disease that will damage the player's health.

DEATH

ROK uses a roguelike death model similar to Rust. When players die, they will fall to the ground as a ragdoll container that can be looted by other players. Dead players will be provided with a random re-spawn option that can be improved through bed placement.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION

Players begin the game by creating a unique character. They will be able to refine their look in great detail by editing their body parts, choosing hair, and establishing a banner scheme to help them identify loyal friends during gameplay. You can also choose the voice style of your player's taunts.

BUILDING

Using the standard block, ramp and stairs, ROK building materials will consist of sticks, thatch, clay, wood, re-enforced wood, and stone. Thatch, sticks, wood and clay will be widely available and often the first choice in material for beginning level housing. While these materials will offer shelter from poorly equipped enemies, they are easily breached by other players. Stone will offer much greater resistance to basic attacks and will only be damageable with siege tactics. Players will be able to build their homes, towers and castles any way they like, but will need a great deal of space during elder content play in order to hold a large number of production, refining, and collection stations.

Building castles will be a natural occurrence for players who reach elder content gameplay. With the large number of production stations, refining stations, collection stations, chests, torture devices and respawn beds available for the player to build, comes the need to protect a large footprint of space.

Reign of Kings is an interesting game. One I'll never forget, for sure. Any time I'm playing... really any other game, I always arrive at a similar thought about a feature in this game that no other game that I'VE played seems to have.

Captives/Prisoners.

Obviously it's never enjoyable to be hogtied by a nude man weilding a lasso and then thrown in a cage only to be forgotten until you die and rot in a crude prison... But it is enjoyable and satisfying beyond belief when there's that one far-too-annoying player or group that we have ALL seen at one time or another that you finally get the opportunity to tie them up and keep them around as ornaments on your property for all to see that may travel by.
A word from the wise... always keep at least one sharpened rock in your "oriface slot".

That being said, the PvP is difficult to cope with sometimes. Sometimes the game can't seem to track your hits or even keep up with all the movement of battle. Momentary hang-ups, misses that went through the body, misplaced hit tracking, etc. All things to expect from every fight. The most frequent being the 1 or 2 second "pause" in combat. You can still swing for the person but it's as if the server has stopped tracking everything and time has stopped around you, then it returns to normal and retracks all of the hits during the "pause" and instantly kills someone.
Frustrating when you're dealing with someone weilding the King's sword.

All in all, I'd give this game... a 6 out of 10.
If you want the most bang for your buck on this game, buy it on sale like I and my friends did. It's a good game that brought lots of fun and laughs to us but you'd get the most out of it by spending a little less than what they are charging.

Amazing game. This isnt really the type of game that you play alone. You need a 5+ man kill squad (drunk Canadians work the best). Build up fast and strong. Destroy anyone and everything!!! Put holes into peoples hard work and 2-piece a full steel with a iron mace...while in your man thong, sounding like you got a bag of nickels from all 50 butt rocks jammed deep. The only thing that can ruin you game are the hackers and this game is full of them. Things to consider before diving into ROK. 700+ hours...Highly recommend ROK!! This isnt your momma's minecraft...You have been warned

Let me tell you about the awesome times i had on this games with my friends.
The whole pvp thing awesome.
Building whatever you want awesome.
Raiding other peoples ♥♥♥♥ haha best times ever on this game. (note while in a group with my buds)

But alas at the end of the day ive played this game on and off since alpha was great until server got wiped then the whole (non) ping controled thing and theres always 12 asians with 500 ping that can somehow one shot me in the head everytime i try to fight em, eh not so good, i wish they didnt stop developing this game because it had a really cool feel to it i mean come, you can build your own castle attack other peoples and hand to hand combat old school style.

But not for 22 dollars im sorry i still want this game to be successful but the lack of ♥♥♥♥s given about hackers and the ping issue has taken this game down many pegs i wish i could give it a positive but all in all to many bases and hours of being frustrated playing against players who shouldnt be on the servers (ex) ASIANS FROM RETAREDLY FAR AWAY WHO SHOULD HAVE THERE OWN SERVERS TO PLAY ON. has made me dis continue playing this game which once was the only game i wanted to play for a signifficant amount of time.

Started out as a decent game. Found a good community played with the few people who streamed. After little to no support it has slowly been turned into a steaming pile. Mostly by the community but also by the lack of any further development.

Game is now a waste of time and money.

Hey, you want to know how devoted these devlopers are to their games? Check out Star Forge. It was a game getting crowd funded on Indie GoGo. It got funded and was releasing alpha versions and stuff. There were gonna be entirely persistant worlds, customizable bases and guns and ect. Then after a while the entire development for the game and everything got dropped, and it fell into darkness. Then out of no where, Reign of Kings appears about a year later. It was made by the same developers, using the same god damned engine. Except they just didn't include the stuff that was too hard to build. They just reskinned their game and made some quick cash. They just look for money and they are the bottom scum of game development. Do NOT give them your money. They aren't fixing any of the bugs on this game, they just say they did to get more cash. NEVER buy this game.

In my eyes; It's not the devs' fault that this game went to balls. It's the community's. I'll tell you why--

Hackers, DMers, trolls, and all sorts of other nasty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s running up in your grille, just to mess with you.

You could be building the house that you spent two hours gathering resources for, guess what? Someone's gonna' run up, stab you in the back with the King's sword, and steal all your gear, because they got a band of friends together to take the throne, stab the first King in the throat, set the taxes to 100% and run around the server destroying everybody's ♥♥♥♥.

The devs can't counter that.

You could be running around as a new spawn, minding your own business, and somebody could fly across the map and hook you with a rope. They take you to their house and lock you up in stocks just to whip you and laugh about how you couldn't fight back.

The devs could probably counter that; but they haven't.

You could be squaring up to your friend, a stranger, or a hostile, and you could be evenly armed in every field-- except hit detection, it seems to go one way or the other in a completely unbalanced fashion. Either you kill the guy really badly, or you die really badly.

The devs could probably counter that too; but they haven't.

There are moments, though, where the community shines a diamond in the rough at you.

A hacker flew out of nowhere, offered me a lift to the castle-- I reluctantly agreed, and he picked me up with a rope. Off we went to the castle. Next thing I knew he was battling the King whilst I was settled on the throne, taking his crown. Slowly and mockingly, as the hacker spurted some RP nonesense about him being a tyrant ruler and how he's ushering in a better age in time. In reality the guy had taxes set to 5% and the hacker wanted them to go down.

Or when I was a lonely newspawn tossing about on the beach when a group of friendly fellows in full iron armor waltzed up and asked if I needed any help building a home. They chopped down trees, mined rocks and ores and did all of the work for me, to build me tools to help them get more. We eventually built me a small castle to live in, complete with furnishings, weapons for defence, and armor for survival.

It could still be worth a shot to buy this game, but... you'd best bring friends to combat the loneliness of empty servers, or the trolls.
