About This Game

The Cortex is your ultimate destination for Firefly Online news and information. This companion app is a great way to manage your profile, stay current with the game’s progress, take advantage of special offers and gain access to exclusive content (Big Damn Hero interviews, for example).

The Cortex will also be your place to get the Big Damn Hero package. You are not required to make this purchase. If you choose not to, it won’t affect your gameplay in any significant way. However, if you’re hankerin’ for an early taste of the Verse, grab yourself some exclusive loot along the way and help support the development of the game, this’ll be a shiny way to do it.

Experience the Cortex:

The app is absolutely free. Those of you with a basic account can use the Cortex to:

• Log in and manage your profile
• Keep up-to-date with news and special offers
• View the cast interviews and gameplay videos
• Earn points that will convert to in-game currency
• If you don’t have an account, the Cortex will make signing up quick and easy.

For an enhanced experience, you can spend $4.99 to become a Big Damn Hero. By purchasing this premium package, you’ll receive both instant and long-term rewards.

Becoming a Big Damn Hero

Big Damn Heroes will get The Map of the Verse: a beautiful, highly-detailed, three-dimensional map with every planet and moon in the ‘verse, including planetary details and trivia.

The Map of the Verse will be a great addition to your Firefly collection, not to mention an indispensable tool for those of you who play pen-and-paper games. The Map also includes the Trade Route mini-game, a scavenger hunt that earns you rewards, including digital Firefly Cortex Cards.

Cortex Cards can be traded in for even more points. And if you manage to complete a card set you can unlock exclusive digital loot that will be usable when Firefly Online is released. Yes, we thought you’d like to play a game while you’re waiting to play the game.

Almost everything you do in the Cortex earns you Brownie Points. If you’re just using the free app, those points will be tradable for in-game currency when Firefly Online ships. However, if you’ve decided to become a Big Damn Hero, those points will earn you digital loot each time you reach preset milestones. You can even get Cortex Card packs (which can also be purchased for cashy money) by collecting Brownie Points, in case you don’t want to take a job from Captain Mal, but still want to collect those shiny Cortex Cards.

Another benefit of being a Big Damn Hero is the Crappy Town Where You’re the Hero adventure. When Firefly Online is released, Big Damn Heroes will be invited to accept a job in a little frontier town where folks are in sore need of someone to step up and deliver them from oppression. After completing the job (details of that job will be yours to discover along the way), you’ll earn a statue with your captain’s likeness, placed smack dab in the middle of town square for all to see – including other players.

Big Damn Hero exclusives include:

• The Map of the Verse.
• The “Crappy Town Where You’re a Hero” adventure to earn a statue of your captain.
• Ability to collect Cortex Cards and earn rare digital items for use in the game.
• Your name in the game credits.
• Badges to show off your account rank.
• Developer Diaries and interviews.
• Surveys soliciting your feedback on game features.
• A chance to submit ideas during our Big Damn Contests.
• Assuming enough folks like being BDHs, this list of shiny exclusives will continue to grow!

Firefly Online is a self-funded game being created by an independent team of industry veterans who share your love of Firefly. We’re hoping there are Firefly fans out there in the Black who want to support our efforts, and you’ll be doing just that when you become a Big Damn Hero.

How does one access the map, cards, or practically anything on this App—if you can't do the Big Damn Hero thing?

Still staying hopeful on FIREFLY THE GAME. They way they were describing on some of the things I was reading from their FFo website is that it will be turn based, much like the board game, but with animated graphix.

If this game fails at least there is still Star Citizen.
"what is Star Citizen?" Its a open universe space/ship/sandbox/fps/racing/co-op/pvp game...
google it and if its your first time try using the free code: STAR-DLNC-TS2S to get 5000 in game credits...

If you're a fan of Firefly then you may as well download this and check out the map of the 'Verse these guys made, but I don't recommend spending too much time on it. It's supposed to serve as a comapion app for a much larger game that has been abandoned, so far as anyone can tell. The 'development' 'studio' has cut communication with fans and has made no updates/announcements for LITERALLY 10 billion years. But meh, the map is kinda neat, and there's also a page in the app where you can view the Serenity model asset they were working with so you get a sense of what the ships would've looked like. So as a free download, I suppose it's worth 15 minutes of your perusing.

Knowing the full, MMO type game this is the companion app for is a couple of years overdue, I still support this. The company was almost done with their initial concept, then got almost everyone from the original cast to agree to do voice work. Working that in believeably pretty much required a full rewrite of the game. That process takes a while. I have patience, especially for a project I've only put a few dollars toward.

This app is a part of my daily bonus collection routine. I log in, collect my 50 BPs for the daily log in, swing through the trading post for another 10 BPs (even though everything except a link to the DVDs is gone from there, it's still worth 10 extra BPs just to click through), check the news reports, do the daily trade route for another 50 BPs and 3 cards, then finish out my 500 BP/day goal with normal trade routes for 50 BP each. Get my new pack of cards, log off and move on with my day. Not a bad way to spend a few minutes a day, considering I only paid $5 for it.

The game that this app is companion to, appears to be dead in the water. It is already 2 years overdue, and all information, communication, and updates from the development team has ceased to exist for about a year now. Rumors persist that due to an upper level Fox management change that this was on of the projects that was wiped.

This app should really be removed from Steam as it has no function, the game doesn't exist, nor will it at this point.

For starters let me say, THIS IS NOT A GAME!! There, now that we have that cleared up I'll explain what it is... What you've got here is an app in which you can support and get a few bonus things for the game Firefly Online, which is set to come out this spring. The app is great for two types of people, if you'd like to be a supporter of the Firefly Online game and get a few in game bennies while you do so, or if your a big Firefly fan. This app is being billed as free but there is a payed version which opens up a lot more for $5.00. So lets look at both and see what you get.

As a free player you will get to reserve your in game character name and set up your account for the game right now. You'll also get a news feed and a couple of in game items. It's not bad if you really plan on playing the game when it comes out but honestly it's something that could have just as easily been done online.

Now if your willing to drop down $5.00 in support of the game this app will really open up quite a bit. You'll get all the things a free player gets plus get your name in the game credits, get a few more in game items and titles, coolest of which is "Big Damn Hero," and you get a ship viewer to see ships that will be in game, a collectible virtual card collection with images from the TV show, and best of all, a map of the verse. Along with the map of the verse comes a mini game where you do "trade runs," finding one planet then another and another. There's practice, untimed ones, and a daily and weekly timed ones. These mini-games give you more BP (brownie points) which will get you more cards for your collection and more in game items and titles. The map of the verse can also be a great resource for those who do table top roleplaying in the Firefly universe as it gives you a zoomable view of the entire Firefly universe along with descriptions of each planet, some of them going into great detail.

There is also an option to support the game more by purchasing virtual card packs to help complete your collection. These range from $0.99 to $2.99 depending on how many cards you want and the chance of rare or super rare card drops. It's kind of a cool way to help support the game but not something that will make or break your app experience really if you decide to do it or not do it.

At the end of the day though it comes down to this... Do you like Firefly and want to support a future game featuring it's universe?? If you don't then just go ahead and pass this app up. But if you do enjoy Firefly and want more cool stuff about it you'll find a lot of enjoyment within the app, if your willing to give em your hard earned five bucks....

Since I was afraid this was going to happen ... it appears that people aren't reading the description of this app and are jumping to conclusions.

QUIK FAQ

Q - Is this the Firefly Online MMO?
A - No. This is the updated Cortex where you will be able to manage your Firefly Online account from.

Q - But it says it's free and they are asking for money!
A - Yes, the Cortex is free to download and log into. And yes, they are offering a package for $5 for some added Cortex goodies to help support the devs. It is completely optional and will not in any way affect players' postitions in the official game whether the package is bought or not.

Q - When is the GAME going to be coming out?
A - Spring of this year (2015).

Q - Will IT cost something?
A - Yes.

---

If that didn't help explain things, and since people aren't reading the game description, I have a feeling people aren't reading the intro page after starting the Cortex up.

Here, let me transcribe it for you, word for word (with added emphasis by me). It explains exactly what it is and what to expect from it:

Welcome to the Cortex. The Official Companion App for Firefly Online™

The Cortex is your ultimate destination hub for Firefly Online, a shiny TOOL that makes it easy to stay current with the game.

You can use the FREE Cortex to:

  • Log in and manage your game account
  • Keep up to date with news and special offers
  • View Cast interviews and gameplay videos
  • Earn points that will convert to in-game currency

Find a Crew. Find a Job. Keep Flying.
ENTER

---

Think of it this way:

The Cortex is like an interactive version of the Bonus Features found on DVDs.

What's not shiny about that?

This app was supposed to be a shiny distraction while fans waited for the real game to be released. Instead, it has become "a long wait for a train don't come."

Allow me go a little more in depth about how I've become increasingly disillusioned about the development team:

1. The collectible card system runs on the Coupon Collector's Dilemma. When I pointed this out to developers, the response I got was basically, "it's optional; people don't *have* to do it." Which is accurate, but a cynical approach to the idea of cultivating a loyal fandom.
2. At one point, the Cortex was getting regular updates. Currently, my feed is showing the "latest news" was back in September. I've seen a few additional posts outside the Cortex. Maybe they've abandoned that in favor of their Facebook Feed. Which negates the whole idea of the BDH drive (which was supposed to be the "inside track" for in game news and updates.)
3. It's been years since this game was announced. But, like George RR Martin books, the release dates are vague and keep getting moved. I'm no longer confident it will be released.

So, I don't think it's unreasonable of me, at this time, to be disappointed and disillusioned. Your opinion may differ. Which is fine. You can keep waiting for that train.
