Typoman: Revised is a 2D puzzle platformer that requires you to use letters to make words in order to solve the puzzles.

See written review below or watch it here: https://youtu.be/WLDNKJyU5tg
You play as the hero and your body is made up of the letters spelling 'HERO'. It’s a game about good versus evil, and there isn’t much depth to the story. You will need to find and gather all the collectible quotes as you play though, in order to read it.

As you progress through the chapters, you encounter various words and letters, and you need to build specific words to complete the puzzles. It would have been nice to be able to type out words instead of moving letters individually, but it wasn't a big deal. There isn’t any direct combat in the game, but you use words as weapons in some levels, as well as on the final boss fight, and it was enjoyable.

There are a wide variety of words that you can make, but not all of them have a function. The part of the game that was the most challenging for me was figuring out which function I needed to perform. Once you know what you need to do, it’s then a matter of finding the right synonym using the letters you have available at the time.

Pros:
  • music and sound effects are good throughout the game
  • puzzles are good, and enjoyable - some of puzzles are more challenging, and really make you think about what you need to do (after being stuck for a bit, and then after finally realizing what word or letter I missed, I have to admit that felt pretty dumb for not realizing the word sooner)
  • there’s sometimes flexibility with what words you use (but not always)
  • checkpoints throughout the game are very frequent, so if you die or have to retry, you won’t lose very much progress; the game is very forgiving in that sense
  • good art style that fits so well with puzzle mechanics (letters and words make up various parts of the environments; even the monsters are made up of words, like 'DOOM')
  • decent port from the Wii U, and it has some improvements from the original
  • in levels where platforming plays a larger role, you’ll need to be quick with your word building and platforming to avoid certain death, and it adds some excitement to the game

Cons:
  • this game requires you to have a good understanding of English and spelling
a few times I made words that I thought should have worked in the situation, but they didn’t always (i.e. 'RAINS' does not work but 'RAIN' does)
  • not much depth to the story
  • initially interacting with letters thinking you’ve grabbed the letter, but didn’t interact long enough to fully pick it up can sometimes be annoying, and get you killed
  • lacks keyboard customization; the interact keybinding is bound to spacebar and it feels awkward right (you move with the arrow keys, but with your other hand using the spacebar, you will instinctively jump with spacebar instead of the up arrow key, and die) - using a controller might be easier

Conclusion:
The game took me just over 4 hours to complete, and there were just a few collectibles that I missed. I don’t feel the need to replay it, but there are several achievements that are still available. I enjoyed the word puzzles, and the game overall. I feel that the price is just a little too high for the game’s duration. I’d recommend checking it out if you’re someone who enjoys word puzzles, and puzzle platformers.

Honestly I feel like I found a diamond in the rough. Truthfully, this game honestly made me feel like an idiot, because word puzzles are perhaps one of the biggest things I struggle on. If you're great with word scrabbles then you'll breeze through this quickly. If you suffer like me, there is a steam video guide to help you out.

Visually this game is amazing. Everything in essence is simplistic, done very cleverly, and it changes suddenly when it comes to the final boss. Everything is fairly clear to see (with one or two things here and there), and the "quotation" collectables aren't super hard to obtain or really fustraiting.

Gameplay-wise I have a few problems. Jumping sempt to be a little finicky at times, and its hard to tell what ledges you can and cannot grab; as well as seeing how FAR you can jump (protip, jump off of a ledge or you'll just drop straight down)

All in this game is beautiful. The soundtrack compliments the game VERY well. If you have a few hours to spare and want to do a type of puzzle that most video games don't really touch (and if its on sale), then I would HIGHLY recomend this game.

An incredible beautiful puzzle platformer, that transfers and expands upon the Wii U original beautifully. If you enjoy games like Limbo or Inside, you will no doubt like this. The word puzzles are the most stand out feature of the game. Their functionallity has not changed between versions, but the additional words you can now make add a little flair to an already great game mechanic.

I absolutely loved this little game. It's very hard for me to get interested in gaming nowadays, but this held my attention. For the creative word lover.

Don't just content yourself with making the words needed to solve the puzzles! Make every word you can think of! There's TONS of easter eggs! For example, just put in CAT. You'll see what I mean.

Typoman is an amazing game with outstanding gameplay mechanics. If you're like me and bored by the lack of innovation prevalent in AAA games, you'll be keeping your eye out for games that do something different. And sooner or later, you'll find Typoman - and get it. The game has a distinct visual art style, an immersive atmosphere supported by a fantastic soundtrack, and the most important thing: A unique take on puzzle platforming that is based on building words that affect the world around you.

If you want something fresh and are looking for an experience that will stand out in between all the mainstream stuff, you will want to play this game.

Game lacks mouse support, and shows a steam achievement progress notification for every single collectible found, as well as physics that feel off and end up with you stuck in a falling animation between objects and having to restart from a checkpoint all make this an exercise in frustration. perhaps give the demo a try - i should have...

Highly original puzzle game with some action elements.

By combining letters (some of which may be part of the environment or even of monsters), you create words with meaning. Did you create the word "DOWN"? A ladder which is unreachable will be lowered, allowing you to proceed. Did you attach the letter "P" to a GAS tank? "GASP" for air will allow you to walk longer before suffocating. And so on and so forth.

The game probably needs a bit of technical optimization, but the gameplay, animation, music, and level design are all top notch. Highly recommended!

Excellent Puzzle/Platformer!

I was anxious to play this. In this game your character is made of letters (you start as the letter “O” and soon join other letters to complete your character in a brief introduction of what you’re going to see in the game).
Some of the puzzles are simple and you’ll probably solve them right away, but there are several well-made puzzles to keep you entertained. I almost did rage quit one time at a gas puzzle but I realize the answer was right in front of me.

The monsters (or bosses) of each level are amazing and despite the game’s simple look, it’s definitely an engaging and fun game. It posses an okay variety of puzzles (with good challenge), the art on some levels is kind of minimalist but very beautiful and the soundtrack suits the game well. Since I’m Brazilian and English is not my first language (although extremely necessary in my work), I feel like this game is a very fun way to exercise my English.

PT-BR

Excelente Puzzle/Platformer!

Eu estava ansioso pra jogar Typoman e não me decepcionei.

Overall I liked this game. It took me around 4hrs to complete. This game reminded me of another game I played recently "Inside", only with words.

If you enjoy puzzles that get solved via manipulating words that affect the environment, along with a pretty neat adventure, then this is up your ally.

******SPOILER ALERT******

Accidentally created the word "RIP", and was instantlly killed - 10/10 Would RIP again! lol

Solid game that delivers on multiple fronts. Firstly the strongest aspect of the game is its unique way in which you solve puzzles by rearanging and creating words, its relatively unique and generall most puzzles shouldnt take too long to solve most although there are a couple which may need you to re-asses the puzzle. The platforming is quite forgiving with plentiful checkpoints as well as it being quite simple any way,

Artistically this game is on point as people have mentioned it shares similarities with limbo which in its own right perhaps is ample praise. The style of art fits the music well at all points and the compliment eachother expertly creating an atmosphere suited for the game. Additionally the cutscenes (which are few and far apart) are well done and in general leads to a well polished game.

I will say that i did have some minor bugs where the hero had letters fall on him and resulted in the ceiling as well as one odd occasion where the screen managed to tilt 45 degrees or so for about 30 seconds. The first one needed a reset so was not ideal but it only happened twice all game.

All in all the game rates quite well, the story is great for a game without a single word of actual dialogue and the game is an enjoyable experience. Wish there was a bit more but it certainly fills a role of a relatively easy puzzle game that delivers on great atmostphere

Puzzles like these are clever, and often leave you smirking the developer’s creativity.

While the puzzles were exciting at times and mundane at others, they were definitely the stronger element in the ‘puzzle/platformer’ equation. Sporadically throughout the adventure, the game would flip into hyper-platformer mode, where incredibly specific inputs were necessary.

Nevertheless, The idea is remarkable: taking letters from one word, and attaching it to the next. Rearranging the letters within words, so that you can change their meaning entirely. By taking the word “RAIN”, and adding the letter “D” to the front, a previously flooded area becomes walkable. Another example, and one of my favorites: Take the letter “P” from the word “PRAISE”, and all of a sudden you have a platform lifting up. Use that “P” at the end of an area filled with deadly “GAS”, and you’ve provided yourself a safe haven from toxic chemicals.

Typoman’s art style and somber atmospheric tone give the game intrigue, and its clever puzzles will leave you impressed. Overall, an absolutely brilliant game!

- 1st minute, I have some problem with the demo version. It running slow in my PC so It would be nice if developer give us some resolution setting.
- oh, there it is ! //changed the setting //crashed

oh man, well... I'm just going to restart my computer and try again

-2nd minute, weird white logo appeared, black screen, white screen, crashed again.

-3rd minute, trying to write this review but steam doesn't let me write review

//delete the game and install again

-4-5th minute, same ♥♥♥♥ happened again

well... I'm just gonna refund until this game getting better... (gotta try to make a thread about it in discussion)

Going to try the game again and edit this review (until the next update)

edit :

the solution of this problem is changing the setting on the game to Hi (the control still move even in black / white screen, so you just have to guess)

The game is decent and fun, really puzzling (10/10 will aspire again)

I`m still on chapter two but the game have good story, puzzling, and fun (really makes you think and can not be finished under 2 hour, sorry man, no play and refund)

tldr : DO NOT CHANGE THE RESOLUTION SETTING OR YOU CANT PLAY

the game is fun, really worth for the money (but it will be nice if it can be cheaper tho)

oh and there is some bug when closing the game, but that is not a big issue
