Reviews

“Considering the amount of average visual novels cluttering digital distribution lately, it’s exciting to see Icebound come along. [...] Anyone looking to get wrapped up in an entertaining storyline for a weekend should give this a read.”
4/5 – Hardcoregamer

“The story in Icebound is very strong and well-written. [...] I had a difficult time pausing my gameplay, not unlike how caught up I get when reading an interesting book. [...] Icebound is a well written example of what crowdfunding can achieve.”
Indie-Love

“I’ve had a blast playing Icebound. [...] It’s a high-quality gem of a game, and a must for the fantasy VN enthusiast.”
9/10 – Bluebird Plays

About This Game

Icebound is a steampunk fantasy visual novel and puzzle game in a world that has fallen into the depths of a thousand-year ice age. Alchemy is a very real ability to manipulate the forces of nature and machines run using clockworks and steam. Humans have united under the Empire, a mighty continent-wide government that seeks to harness the power of alchemy, while the horned race of ferans lives in tenuous peace.

A wandering alchemist named Dougal, and his icebat Familiar, Isaac, wind up in Isenbarr, an isolated frontier town that is about as cold as you can get. But, when he tries to get a job, he stumbles upon a mysterious challenge with a potentially priceless reward, and several other alchemists vying for the prize. He must use all the alchemical skills at his disposal in order to defeat the monster plaguing the town and prove himself worthy. Unfortunately for him, this seemingly straightforward task turns out to be anything but.

Novel-length story

  • A whimsical yet complex story with over 100,000 words of alchemy, mystery, romance and deceit.
  • Many moral choices that change characters' dialogue and reactions, and influence the story's ending.
  • Includes an unlockable encyclopedia that fleshes out the game's world.

Challenging puzzle gameplay

  • Put your alchemy skills to the test in 10 increasingly difficult optional puzzles.

Original Soundtrack

  • Includes a high quality original soundtrack and music room.

I just finished playing Icebound, finally getting the true ending, and I must say that it was amazing. Icebound is definitely one of the best VNs that I have ever played but I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself here. ^^

To begin, Icebound is a visual novel set in a world covered in ice. You take on the role of Dougal, a wandering alchemist who has lost his long-term memories due to a freak accident. Along with his Familiar Isaac, Dougal arrives in the frontier town of Isenbaar and there, he finds out about a challenge specifically designed for alchemists with the promise of a great reward, the Philosopher's Stone. Of course, Dougal decides to participate in the challenge along with three other alchemists, whom he gets to know over the course of his stay in Isenbaar. However, I'll stop summarizing from here since I don't wish to spoil what the rest of the story is about. Suffice it to say that there is a huge mystery going on where there's more than meets the eye. ;)

There are choices which affect what path and ending you get, and there are 3 different endings from what I've found. It's worth it to obtain either the order or chaos path first. Definitely save the other path (where order and chaos are balanced) for last, as I believe that's the true path and it's much better to see it after getting the other paths and endings. In addition to choices, there are alchemy puzzles to complete and they get progressively more difficult. I found them doable for the most part. I only have a minor complaint about the last one but that's only because the graphics for it were changed compared to the other puzzles, which kind of hurt my eyes a bit. But this is more a minor complaint than anything. ^^

The only criticisms I'd give are two. Although there weren't many grammar errors or typos, there were a few so perhaps some proofreading could be in order. Also, even though there were CGs in the game, there was no CG gallery and I would have liked for there to be one in the Extras section of the main menu. Again, these are minor criticisms more than anything.

Overall, I highly recommend Icebound, as it has a great story. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. It's definitely worth buying and I do love that true ending. I can see that there is potential for there to be a sequel and I'd love if there could be one someday. I'd definitely check it out. :D

Not a bad game, not a great game but pretty good compared to most steam VN in my opinion.
Plenty of choices in the game and different endings..tho a lack of romance options i am happy
that there atleast was one in the game. The puzzle game is not to hard and not to easy, perfect for
me.

Nice little game, the story is easiest the best part of it. It shows of a grim cold world filled on the brink of war.
The puzzles are quait few and far between, also I had no problem finishing them.

I like the multie route choice and multiple endings. The ones I finished where good.

Alchemy is more than just a handy skill in the world of Permia. Alchemists are both admired and feared and have the ability to sort out problems and fix what was once broken. With a strong emphasis on character development and world-building, the simple task of discovering a monster that’s been terrorizing a town becomes all the more intricate. It has beautiful art direction, fitting music, and an alchemy mini-game that is placed at just the right parts of the game to leave me refreshed. I couldn’t get enough of Icebound, by Fastermind Games.

You can read the full review on my website at http://bluebirdplays.com/icebound, which goes into way more detail.

BUT. I will say that Icebound is easily one of the best visual novels I've played so far. It does so many things right and I had so much trouble putting it down. It's a great game, and definitely worth giving a go.

Story

The story of Icebound revolves around Dougal and Isaac, an alchemist and his familiar who made a terrible mistake, and search for a way to rectify it. Along the way they meet many characters and explore new lands.

Art:

The art is decent, there is a variety of art for each character, as well as CG's for important scenes.

Gameplay

This VN does feature some gameplay in the form of Alchemy puzzles. These involve placing colored squares in the right order to fill up a board, these can be quite challenging, and can be a fun break from reading.

Music

The music and sound design is well done, the music compliments the scenes nicely and flows seamlessly with the game.

Overall

Players who enjoy fantasy or steampunk novels wil enjoy Icebound, it features a refreshing story with interesting plot points and mystery to keep you interested, and gameplay and puzzles will keep you coming back for more.
