About This Game

Akihabara. "Akiba," for short.

This suburban Tokyo ward's seen it all, from Japan's post-war reconstruction to the economic bubblegum crisis of the '80s. Always on the cutting edge of progress, with a little something to offer even the most fetishistic of appetites, it was almost inevitable that this singular technocracy of indulgence would give birth to a whole new kind of appetite altogether.

Enter, the “Synthisters” – vampires who prey upon the life energy of the town’s unsuspecting figurine-chasers, maid café connoisseurs and cosplayers. Those victimized by Synthisters take on the properties of their attackers while also withdrawing from society and becoming veritable shut-ins due to their newfound fatal weakness to sunlight.

AKIBA’S TRIP tells the story of one such unfortunate soul: a young man named Nanashi who was lured into a trap by the promise of rare character goods and transformed into one of the walking undead. He, however, was spared the worst of his fate by the bloody kiss of a mysterious Synthister hunter named Shizuku. Together with the rest of his companions in an organization unofficially dubbed the “Akiba Freedom Fighters,” Nanashi and Shizuku must uncover the truth behind the Synthister plague and save Akiba from being overrun by violent, antisocial energy vampires.

And of course, the best way to fight vampires is to strip them down to their skivvies so they melt in the noonday sun…

This game is on everyone's wishlist and nobody has it. The only thing XSEED screwed up here is the $29.99 price tag. Guarantee if they sold it at $10 they'd much more than triple the sales of this game.

It is not a great port: small locations, low draw distance, 30 FPS lock, lack of details, low texture quality, but it is still a good and enjoyable game with criminally low sales. You definitely should buy it, if you want more of this cute Japanese nonsense on Steam.

You can call this game “a small sand box”. You will run around Akihabara, collecting flyers for real stores and cafes (when you finally go to Japan and visit these shops they'll all, probably, be out of business), completing side missions (fighting and undressing 48 young idols, helping a modern Romeo & Juliet by fighting and undressing theirs relatives, buying cakes for your little sister), and beating random strangers with an LCD monitor and stealing their clothes just because you can.

Story & side missions: reasonably weird and fun, but somewhat repetitive — almost all missions require you to fight someone (and steal their clothes).

Gameplay: solid and fast-paced action with good controls. However, difficulty can be a little bit too low. I recommend to use gamepad.

Characters: my little sister likes to pretend that she is a jet. Which is lovely.

EDIT:

AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead & Undressed (REVIEW)
Minor spoilers, nothing too revealing however

After playing through all the routes and completing everything there is to the game I would say that the title 'AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead & Undressed' is an overall great game. As you can tell by the amount of time I've spent on this game, I can assure you that it's a pleasure to be playing this game.

Story (6/10)

"AKIBA’S TRIP tells the story of one such unfortunate soul: a young man named Nanashi who was lured into a trap by the promise of rare character goods and transformed into one of the walking undead.

And of course, the best way to fight vampires is to strip them down to their skivvies so they melt in the noonday sun…"

The story of the game isn't something completly innovative or new, neither is it really complicated or deep - it just adds a nice touch to the game as you strip your way through the streets of Akihabara.

Graphics (6/10)

The graphics aren't all that spectacular due to the fact that game was released for the PS Vita in the first place and was never remade for the PC version, as mentioned by the game developers. Due to the game being an import the graphics aren't what some people would say "amazing" or "next-gen", but put in other words the game can be described as a rough diamond - the more you play it, the more you will realize it's true potential.

Sound (7/10)

The sound or alas music in this game is what you'll be noticing the most in your playthroughs, even when just opening the game you'll be met with a very sweet opening sequel, then followed up by the main menu background music. It all hypes up to the actual gameplay and gives the player a sense of anticipation towards the beginning of the story.
When it comes to sound effects such as combat etc. the game has a very amusing approach towards the combat itself, when it comes down to the real "combat" of the game you'll be hearing more moans than your average gangbang, whether it be male or female ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

Gameplay (8/10)

Speaking of gameplay I can honestly say that the game's combat system, overall 'mission' system etc. synergizes well with each other in the way the game is built. Each side mission in this game is uniquely designed to be entertaining in their own special way, whether it be making a good luck charm for your sister or by being hired by a famous otaku to fight gothic lolitas in broad daylight with the sole intent to strip their clothes off (who cares about story when you can do this instead, am I right?)

B-B-Back to the combat system, it's a bit over simplified to the point whether it be pros or newcomers have no trouble being either offensive or defensive in combat. You fight by pressing Q (or LB on controller) to enter combat mode then by either pressing A, B & Y (controller) or (for example 4, 5 & 6 on PC, all up to what you bind them to) and block with one button in my case E, (or by pressing RB while using a controller) if a foe tries to attack you and you hold E (or RB) you will automatically dodge the attack and you'll be able to counterattack by pressing either 4, 5 & 6 (or A B & Y) shortly after dodging.

The only attacks which are deemed unavoidable are power attacks (you'll recognize them while playing through the game), to dodge them you simply press W, A, S or D or (UP, LEFT, DOWN or RIGHT on your controller) while holding E (or RB) to side-step their attack. Don't be fooled by the combat system and think otherwise, despite the relatively easy combat system it's one of the most enjoyable games I've experienced.

TL;DR: Hold one button to dodge, hold one button to fix equipment, press 3 buttons to attack/combo - it's so easy even Mashiro could do it! (please don't hate me for this)

Replay Value (8/10)

Coming close to an end here, that last paragraph probably left many wondering if I'm trying to review the game or if I'm trying to give you tips... oh whatever it's up to you. Since this is what you might call a pretty simple game in terms of "mechanics" I would still say that the game overall has an astounding replay value, even if I wouldn't have mentioned it you'd need to replay the game at least 4-5 times to actually complete every route of the game (plus for every route that you complete you gain new unlockables and equipment for both you and your "companions") so I'd recommend replaying the game just for that sole reason.

The quickest I've played through the game without doing any side quests would be about 3 hours and 20 minutes, with all the side quests I'd estimate an amount of 8-13 hours of gameplay depending on how quick and efficient you are (without doing the side quests you're missing out on a lot, just saying).

Estimated amount of gameplay (including extras, side quests & others): 20~40 hours

Extra

>Having a strip combo of 7+ will queue a combo finisher which will make foe's panties drop if completed
>Max equipment stats are 999
>Hold Q to fix equipment (Hold LB with a controller)
>There are about 50+ side missions
>There are about 15 main missions +/- depending on route
>You can customize other characters after completing their respected routes
>Nana best girl

DISCLAIMER

This review is not very critical towards general gameplay/graphic mishaps as well as I don't really care too much about the 30 FPS cap since it's playable and it's unlockable, overall giving this game a 7/10 even though others may think otherwise.

I would definitely love to witness a remake of this game for the next gen consoles as well as on PC, let's wrap this up with a big old PANTSU~

"Do you recommend this game?"

Maybe.

I enjoyed AKIBA'S TRIP: Undead & Undressed a lot, i beat it in two sittings but here's why i can't really recommend it to everybody, the combat is terrible.

It really is, it's awful and it has no redeeming qualities and that's all the gameplay there is, think of a way slower version of Dead Rising (You even get wacky weapons like beating up dudes with Body Pillows, Anime swords, Arcade PCBs, Gachapon machines etc), But the combat is so extremelly unsatisfying you will pray for every enemy encounter to end as fast as possible.

That's really a shame too since they put a lot of effort on offering customization options, there's a lot of weapons to choose from and clothing that serves as armor and you can upgrade both to raise their attack and defense respectively aside from changing your character's appearance however there's only 3 true weapon types (Light, Medium and Heavy) and soon you realize that heavy weapons aren't that great and a lot of the movesets for medium weapons are really bad as well, despite wanting to use wacky weapons upgrading one of the lighter weapons (Sonico's guitar) proved to be more effective thanks to the fast swing speed, which is pretty much required for encounters against multiple enemies at the same time and doesn't come at a loss of damage since you can just upgrade it to do 99 damage.

Aside from the combat the game has a lot of Visual Novel elements, It has an enjoyable story with branching paths and multiple endings depending on which girl you decide to go for and how deep your relationship with said girl becomes, this is actually the most enjoyable part of the game by far and if you were to play the story missions only the game isn't actually very long, It can probably be beaten under 6 hours on the easiest difficulty and i would recommend playing it that way, I did my first playthrough of this game on Hard and every enemy encounter is just a chore, It all comes down to kiting, You hit the enemy once then run away, repeat, which becomes much more annoying due to the nature of the combat in this game.

I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who isn't into Otaku culture as that's the main selling point of the game, the humor is great, the characters are great, world is great, but the combat is atrocious so if you are looking to buy this merely for the gameplay i would advice you to not do so.

I would be very interested to see a sequel (third game in the series) with better gameplay, they got a lot of neat ideas but everything is brought down by how tedious the combat is, and you're forced to do a bunch of it if you want to get to the good parts (Visual Novel elements).

If you can look past the gameplay it's actually a very enjoyable game, I had a fun time with it so i can't give it a 100% negative review, but that doesn't make me ignore its flaws, it's a decent concept that could be developed way further, wouldn't recommend paying full price for it, give it a shot when it's discounted during a sale... maybe.
