What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Star Rangers has been 26 months in the making, so we're not coming in new, but we do want to know from players in which direction to focus.
Offering a unique opportunity to visit the Solar System and using NASA content, we can focus more on ground-based building or space-based building or rockets and craft.
We are also testing VR features and wish to release with it enabled across all the maps and be compatible with the release version of the VR hardware.
We need time to understand and implement modding or steam store compatibility so players may contribute.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are guessing approximately 9 months should do it.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The finished version will have approximately 10 more missions making up a story arc in the direction the players have suggested with either a) more buildings b) more vehicles c) more locales, but most likely a combination of all.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“It's very good . It is an alpha, though and should be considered this only because the highest level of the tech tree will get tweaked quite a bit, although the core gameplay (ie. mining, building) is complete.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Pricing will be the same after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are going to ask for voting and content suggestions, and role out "missions" accordingly. We want to do one a week, and continue. When we go live we will have approximately 36 missions suggested by fans.”

About This Game

Explore space as an astronaut recruit and build on other worlds in Star Rangers

Dear Steam Users,

Well it’s time. From a surprise meeting with Bill Nye at NASA, who said “Khal, build the game you want to, not what other people think you should build” to enough funding to allow us 2 years of developing and private testing on Steam , we think we’re ready to show the public our alpha of Star Rangers on Steam. Thank Goodness for Steam.

This an early, early, access version of Star Rangers, which is our dream game. I've dreamt of it my whole life – to use a game engine to imagine what space travel in the next few years will look like and build a multiplayer sandbox around it which is fun, and possible, and wow – try to do it without using guns.

That’s a pretty tall order, and there have been literally 21 developers working on the game in a peak of 15 or so 14 months ago to turbodrive our core team of 5. We want you to have as much fun as we do , and help us choose the final features of the game for release.

We really want you to tell us what customization features you want the most, from Map editors to in-game stuff:
For example – what do you crave? If you’re like us – you want robots, rockets, maps, and persistence! You want lasers and fusion reactors and 3D printers and you want it all and you want it now.

I think we have an opportunity – an opportunity to show off our best work to SpaceX and NASA and all the rest of the real scientists out there (Like Bill), and really imagine what it takes to extend our civilization off of this rock we call earth.

Some of the things we have in the mid-stages of planning – are real astronaut training for our most active players – we’re saving 10% of all proceeds in a private account so we can sponsor one of you to Astronaut Training at Embry Riddle University with Project Possum! That means one day, one of you will be a real Star Ranger with training and a mission to complete! We’re saving the overflow for an actual space flight.

So, we’re working with a team that includes former astronauts to come up with the best ways for us to add user content to the game, and that’s shaping up to start with custom uniform textures, user-authored notes, and story-mode map-sharing as a first blush.
Thanks for you for attention, and enjoy the low introductory price – you’re the pioneers we were looking for, and we’ll work with you to get everything where we need it.

  • Khal and the whole Star Rangers Team

p.s. We're starting with a substantial discount and the price will go up over time to the sweet spot of 24.99, which seems to be what everyone is telling us.

Disclaimer For Early Access

Star Rangers is being developed with the Steam community’s involvement. With this approach to development, the creation of Star Rangers will now progress in the direction the community chooses and contributes to, such as emphasizing asteroid-mining, or ramping up buildings for Mars colonization.

Star Rangers is an open ‘sandbox’ of the local solar system incorporating NASA content, with an emphasis on surviving and thriving on worlds other than Earth. The game has been in private alpha on Steam for several weeks, for vocal members of its fan base. The first alpha will feature some 6 maps on Mars, including the Victoria Crater, the Million Mounds area of the Moon, and a best-guess depiction of what it’s like under the ice on Europa.

Those who have participated in the alpha will be able to continue enjoying the game as it now moves over to Steam Early Access (thanks Den and WarDJ- you rock).

There are test maps, including a VR map, and you can let us know what you like and what you hate.

Star Rangers will award official Mozilla Digital badges for building and operating custom rocket-sleds, asteroid mining operations, rovers, robots, and more.

Right.. with not a lot of game time my first impressions are this game has super potential. There is a lot of polishing to do regarding mechanics and bit more transparent controls and physics.
My quad bike was bouncing around with suspension that would make a bunny envious!. The starter island should have extra batteries for that thing as it ran out quick,

Which brings me to food, either i couldn't see it or it wasn't t here at all. Unless those Tomatoes I planted were supposed to do it for me.. but wait could I wait that long? I was just exploring about I curled up in a ball from hunger loss? who gets that hungry in a span of 1 hour you are on the floor dying? Wow I'd so get fired from my job in real life if that were the case.

Next part was the bunker with the underwater printer. Again thanks that I endured my grinding of teeth but the print and pick up blueprint was mind boggling. They need to fix that. To the avg Joe looking to see in the tank that I had to piece the parts together could have been a bit more transparent in getting across to the player.

Fun none the less. kinda reminded me in a kerbal kinda way.. if you squint.

Right brings me to the station. Game mechanics again shot me up though the bulk head to get out i think? well that's how I got out. Only to show up in a station that was designed with the same software from the early 90s. OK early access and all but the amount of people backing this game (Bill I'm looking at you). You'd think they'd throw a few more coins at the Dev team who would be loving a upgrade from windows 95.

Still I'm looking at this as Really early alpha (beta is so way off people). Anyhow I see a lady there walking and talk to her.. um well imagine speak and spell (for those who remember it) and Steven Hawking. yup it's as if Steven and speak and spell had a child. Bingo.

Anyhow I'm not abandoning this as I enjoy most space games, it's just that this needs a wee bit more hours in the polishing stage. I don't mean visual, hell best simulators out there had basic graphics (battlefront games). This needs work on its physics engine and more.

Can't wait to see what they will do with it! I've put my 8.99 in for a hope for the best! I'll be watching all those patch notes hopefully!

would I tell anyone to buy this yet... nope, not unless you like to support developing companies. then yup!
would i tell anyone this game is fun?... maybe, I can see it but it's like I can see the mountains in the distance but yet not close enough to enjoy the stunning awesomeness of them.

4/10 because of the offspring of Hawkings and missus Spell.

They have a long way to go. There are things badly broken that should have been fixed before public access. As with every other game out there, they set all volume levels way too high and as with most, you don't get access to the controls until after all the intros. In this case, you have to get all the way into a game only to find the controls don't seem to have any effect.

Controls are also a mess. First off, it set up be default 5 sticks (0-4). Problem is I only have 2, a T.16000 and an Edtracker which is a head tracking device. You can't change those bindings once in game. you have to do it in a little popup before it starts loading the game and the settings are cyrptic at best. Got in and couldn't stop my char from running until I restarted and messed with the stick bindings. Stearing the char is also a pain. you have to hold the mouse button to use it to control direction. Basicly, it's a mess. I'll try it again when they get the basics that should have been done in before showing to the public fixed.

Product received for free
Got a 'Moonbase Alpha' vibe from it so far, although the although the more futuristic visuals (and lack of text-to-speech)
Movement response felt sluggish at times, and the tutorial was a little slow.
If you did like moonbase alpha though, this looks to be heading in a more open direction over it.

I've just got started with this, but am impressed so far. There's a lot of depth for such an early stage of development, and gameplay is satisfying, even if a bit unintuitive at this point.

The dev team seems to be active, responsive to player feedback and determined to improve the product, so I'd say it's a good investment even now, if you enjoy early involvement in a game that has much potential.

I have tried this early access game and found it stimulating.
The Whitlee Hab seems to have a stuck door, but I enjoyed
my visit to the test map and will try the Europa map next.
I noticed by accident that the home and end keys switch to a useful :inside helmet: view
and it was good.
Please give me more food, as ,my character was quite hungry and I ate all the
rations at once.

Game has potential but this shouldn't even be in alpha stages. The first 2 minutes of the game I fell past the surface when landing my ship on the Mars Tutorial. I just glitched past the surface and fell into the void forever. Started up the map again, same issue. Text getting stuck on the screen, clunky menu system. This game needs tons of work, especially after playing 8 minutes total and everything I did I encountered a bug or a glitch.

Star Rangers is a surprisingly interesting game.
Space exploration games are slowly demanding the spotlight, and this title is successfully shaping its path to success.
The game is still in a very Early Access stage, with many features and details to be added and fixed (which have been planned by the devs). Due to its current status I am unabe to properly label the negative aspects as such, hence they will be listed at the bottom of the review as a mere feedback and advice.

You start off by creating a character, modifying his appearance and picking a class, which will give you a bonus on several stats, along with unique skills and perks.
There are various missions available, accessible from a text based computer (you actually have to type the commands, a little feature that I found brilliant in terms of involvement), and they range from space exploration ones (planet discovery, debris cleaening etc) to planet related ones (build a particular structure, collect materials etc).

The game is vast, hugely vast. You have the chance to explore your favourite solar system planet and much more. In your aid there are different vehicles with their own particular function.
In my current game experience I only visited Mars so far (I've always been fascinated by the Red Planet). Reaching it was a wonderful experience and the landing process is brilliant, with speed balancing being a vital factor to properly reach the planet without destroying your ship.

Without further ado, I would like to talk about the exteremly positive aspects of Star Rangers, which also are the reason why you should definitely give it a try:

  • Space Immersion: who wouldn't love to explore the planets we could only see in books or tv channels? Star Rangers offers this incredible opportunity! While the majority of space exploration games are based on fictional planets and galaxy, this one takes place in a realistic universe.
  • Survival: I am fond of survival games, I like the mechanism and the thrills that such titles offer to the player. You normally have to survive in an island, a forest, a city, or in any other place on planet Eart. Imagine how could it be to survive in another planet? You can build structures, inflate pre-made ones, gather materials, explore, but always remember to have a shelter nearby because oxygen and suit stability can be replenished by staying inside your base.
Every electronic apparatus needs to be powered with a battery (which has its own durability), making every decision important, as they aren't that common to have.
  • Updates: as for every Early Access game I review, I put the stress on the updates, which are the reason why a title is labeled like that. The devs do actually listen to feedbacks and they constantly keep the game updated.
  • PC Requirements: my PC isn't an high-end one, thus I feared I couldn't run a game of this calibre. I could easily set the maximum graphic options without having an issue. Yes, we aren't talking about extremely realistic texturing, and visually speaking it may not look like a 2016 title, but it still looks great!

In the end, I would like to point out a few aspect that many need an optimization (which I am sure will be fixed as I have read them being planned in the future).

  • Tutorial: the in-game tutorial currently still feels a bit incomplete as it looks like a real campaign without a real lead to follow. It's not a great issue though, as the missions accessible from the computer clearly shows what to do. What it lacks is a proper control scheme tutorial.
  • Voice Acting: even though it's just a minor thing, I think it may need a revamp, since it is a game about immersion (and trust me, it's very immersive).

Am I recommending the game? Yes! Even though it may feel like being in a beta status, it's definitely worth the price, considering you will be paying for an in-development product that will only get better in time!

Played this game for almost two hours before finally realising the game offers almost nothing.

It seems to just be one massive walking simulator with no beautiful views.
The class system is terrible and has no affect on the game whatsoever.
The multiplayer is confusing and it's difficult to join someone's game.

This game is the first game (in about 300 game purchases) that I have had refunded.

Don't buy.

I think it's a bit too early in the dev cycle to really enjoy this yet. I may come back to it at a later date but at the moment it's just too buggy. I had a few issues without even getting through the tutorial including:

- Hair colour didn't show properly (chose dark hair at character selection but is ginger/blonde in game)
- Avatars feet disappeared through the floor in buildings
- Unskippable dialogue (with terrible voice acting/script) that I had to watch three times in the hour I played
- Experiment feature that wasn't really explained
- The hologram for the experiment feature was barely viewable and doesn't always display properly
- The ATV wouldn't respond (apparantly due to a battery being misplaced despite correct placement not being explained)
- A random Trike spawned where I was supposed to be crafting the ATV
- An ATV frame got stuck in the ceiling

That would be bad enough if it were for a consecutive hours gameplay, however these were over three seperate attempts to play this from the beginning. After all this the basic graphics and general clunky feel of movement and the UI made me think this needs alot more work to even be in EA.

This may all change in the future, it is very early at this stage but for me this was too much wrong in such a short period of time so I got my cash back until a later date

This game is so full of potential it makes my very existence quiver. That being said, in the state it is in now, it's not worth more than, say $15 for the early access IMO. The concepts and design are unique among current space games. It has been developed in collab with NASA, for real and it shows in the designs of suits and the fact that it utilizes real locations around the solar system.
Curiously however, the physics models seem to still need some tweaking, but then they also sent up a chimp before a person, so what are ya gonna do ? lol.

She's a looker, but it's got it's share of bugs at the moment (to be somewhat expected of an early access title I suppose). Personally I have been following this project for a while as an early supporter, and when it's done it should be a premium title if they devs keep up the pace they've been working of late.

Compared to something like TKOM, I gotta say it gives it a good run. Its generally more playable than TKOM, but each have pluses and minuses the other does not. Some of the lighting and visuals you get just blow you away as you're playing, the soundtrack is transcendant and the visuals are pretty up to date (in fact it might be nice if I could take off some of the post-filters and stuff on LOW setting, lol)

Long story short, if you want to support games like this, even today she's worth more than $10 imo. They're very active lately hammering out bugs and stuff. The next couple updates should address many things brought forward by the community since it's public launch around a week ago.

Down the road this title will be well worth $20+ if they do it right, but I would not recommend that anyone -esp. who might get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it needing work- to buy it at a premium price right now.

Controls are a little clunky, but nothing that ever bothered me personally too much.

Nevertheless, given what's here and what it might become I do recommend. If you can get it on sale for $15 or less, gwan out and giv'er a whirl around the ol' solar system ;)

If the next couple updates don't deliver though, my review could change, but if you like the genre, give this game and the dev team a chance. Just remember, forgivness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza.

Definitely potential for this game. Authenticity and education are clearly priorities for the devs.

As the devs noted in the description, this IS an early-access release to get community feedback. There are issues with in-game physics and interaction mechanics.

It's certainly playable though, and the storyline appears well-developed.

You must be aware that it is an Alpha release, meaning that everything is still in early developement stage, there will be a lot of bugs and functionality will change. It also seems that the releases are compiled in debugging mode so don't expect speed optimization. Server is almost always online, that's a very good thing.

Said that, it's a very interesting game, you can fly and build in space, fight against space debris lika a pro space janitor like Roger Wilko or Hachimaki, build your own base and ships in Mars and explore it's misteries, fly to the Moon seeing your dead clones scattered if you forget to feeed them or even explore the oceans of Europa.

It reminds me a bit of Moon Base Alpha, I liked it but this is more build and quest oriented.

I recomend this game to those who want to see how a game is developed and evolves.
