What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

The essential ingredient to the success of a survival game is player involvement.

Early Access and community involvement has been a part of our development strategy since we started work on the project. As a socially driven, multiplayer, survival experience it is essential that we design game content that accounts for the way our users actually play and.

We've built this world, we've packed it with incredibly fun mechanics, and now we need YOU to help bring it all to life. While the development team has a clear and pervading vision for the game, Early Access helps us to focus development resources on the content that players are actually engaging with, and deliver a highly customized, player-focused game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Simply put, Asteroids: Outpost will remain in Early Access as long as needed. While we don't anticipate this to go on forever, the launch product can be seen as a core game, with an ongoing, stream of updates as close to monthly as possible.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The game will continue to integrate regular and significant updates throughout Early Access. We will keep users apprised of impending changes and notify users of details with each patch. This process allows us to take in user feedback at regular intervals and react accordingly. We have a number of systems in development including additional environmental hazards, new base modules, expanded suit and rover development and much more.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At launch, Asteroids Outpost will be a fully playable and enjoyabble sandbox game. We have tons of ways to play including mining, crafting, building, exploration and PVP. From here we will simply be adding content, new gameplay mechanics and more.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We hope this launch will bring in a wide group of players, and serve as our thanks for getting in from the start.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The game developers and community leads will engage with users through the official Steam Page, Forums, and official social media outlets. We also have a very involved team of developers who will be playing the game, chatting, streaming and rubbing elbows with players once the game is launched.”

Salty Friday!

Hey Salty nation,

First off thank you to everyone who has been playing the game. We’ve been hard at work patching and fixing issues to make sure the game is stable and all of the features currently in place work how they were initially designed to work. The feedback we’re received has been incredibly valuable, and we are checking in on your comments daily to supplement our daily development and QA process.

We have a significant update in process that should be ready by the end of the month, which overhauls some of the core systems and optimizes a bunch of mechanics. We are looking to improve the function and relevance of the base modules, and make mining and buiding a generally more meaningful process, while keeping an eye on combat mechanics and ensuring the overall “economy” still makes sense.

I’m happy to announce we are almost ready to reveal our three-month roadmap that will include all the upcoming features and content we intend to add. Many of which have come straight from the community. We’ll still be tweaking and adjusting as we go and will still want to hear about all the cool ideas you have, so keep em coming.

For now I’d like to leave you with a fun little image that pays homage to the original Asteroids.

About This Game

Mankind has expanded its reach into the distant corners of the solar system. Near-space vessels, heavy industry on the moon and thriving colonies on Mars extend humanity's empire into the great blackness of space.

With the earth's mines nearly spent, industrialists rely on the wealth of the heavens. Our solar system's massive Asteroid Belt is a mother lode of resources, just waiting to be torn free and shipped home. "The Belt" is the humanity's newest frontier, as wild and untamed as any that man has faced.

Ambitious prospectors blast off with little more than an Outpost Module and a Mining Tool, to tear the hide off these asteroids and find their fortunes. This bonanza doesn't come without risks. Mere survival is a daily struggle. Asteroid storms bombard the surface, destroying Outposts, and hostile claim jumpers can appear at any moment.

For the brave, there is a fortune to be made. For the foolish - there is only death. Welcome to the new Gold Rush.

  • Search, Scavenge, and Build: Mine rare minerals from fallen asteroids and scavenge abandoned outposts to craft and upgrade your technologies.

  • Defend and Upgrade Your Base: Build a highly customized base with a huge range of functional components.
  • Get The Right Suit: Armor up in a hi-tech industrial space suit that allows miners to explore a vast area of their inhospitable environment.

  • The Vehicle: Roam and scavenge the asteroid in an upgradable rover, equipped with survival systems including oxygen, energy, and cargo space.

  • Tools and Weapons: Powerful mining equipment can rip the raw ore from fallen asteroids, and can also be used for self-defense against rival miners and claim jumpers.

  • Maintain Life Support: Survival itself is a challenge in this hostile environment – manage your oxygen, and energy levels to survive.

  • Vast Terrain: Explore an enormous asteroid to discover rare resources, rival miners, abandoned camps and more.

  • Defend Against Asteroids: Life in the belt is dangerous, miners must craft powerful turrets to shoot down incoming asteroids. Accurate shooting will yield more lucrative ore.

  • Interact with other Players: Work with and against other players to protect your home territory and collect more resources. Trade, team up and fight in a struggle to establish dominance.

Early Access Review
One of the most frustrating games that I have played in a long time. If you were like me and thought this game looked fun, if you were tempted by the "survival" "sandbox" or "crafting" tags that the developers attached to this game, please do not hit the "Buy" button. For a full look at my first impressions..... and full frustrations check out my video below.

It's really not sandbox (you can only mine the asteroids that you shoot down), the costs for upgrades is displayed incorrectly, and once you do get the upgrades (after like 10 minutes) then there is nothing else to do - you have won at this game.

Interesting concept, but horrible execution. "But it's early access! You shouldn't expect anything good that doesn't have tons of bugs!" Yeah, well for $20, companies shouldn't be trying to sell you some shiny (good graphics but no substance) crap. This is terrible and not worth even $2. But my bad, I should have realized this beforehand. Hopefully I won't be dumb enough to purchase something this awful again.

DISCLAIMER: As of launch, Asteroids: Outpost is not even ready for Early Access. It's a technical nightmare. Don't. Three separate ToS agreements, outside updater that's slower than dial-up, settings that don't stick, controls that won't remap, consistent bugs. It's not fun.

This clip even shows a save-wiping bug.

Now, that said, the concept of shooting down raining asteroids from the sky, to then mine their resources on a mad dash and build a giant space station is interesting. If it can make competitive play optional and create some variety outside of this core mechanism, there could be a crowd for this, even if it has nothing to do with Asteroids. Let's be clear on that last one. Whatever Atari is doing to their franchises, it's not honoring their olden ways. For fellow veterans who can settle for something different, it might just be a slight alteration to the sandbox model.

The settings don't actually do anything and the gameplay is non-existent.

I'm having a really hard time understanding the decision to start charging money for this. For an earily access, I don't expect much but I do want to see a workable concept if you are asking for money.

Is there some alternate dimension where the devs are actually able to have fun with this?
Are the they just nefariously milking the concept for cash before folding?
Time may tell but, unless you have cash to burn, feel free to wait until this block of random code actually develops in to a game.

Clearly a money mongering operation. It's just enough gameplay to call it a crappy demo, nothing more. Graphics are fine, but there is almost nothing to do in the game. Took me 10 minutes to max out all the upgrades, none of the buildings REALLY do anything. There is one thing to call it early access...but you get the feeling that they are not going to do much with it and just take your money and run. If there was a percentage of a complete game that you could call this, I would call it 5%. Also, IT'S NOT SANDBOX!!!!! If you don't know what sandbox means, don't put it in the title. ZERO destructible or craftable terrain

This game doesn't even have enough content to be called Early Access...... I'm currently studying Game Programming, and I could quite easily make this game (minus the art assets) fairly quickly...... I'd be genuinely suprised if there are more than 2 people working on this game......

I understand if the Developer wants to get their game out there on the market and see what the public thinks about their concept....... but they should at least scale the price accordingly....... I mean USD$30 ...... SUCH A ******* RIP-OFF!
Maybe $10 dead max would be suitable..... I'd even suggest the price to be set to $2.00 for the "wonderful" 5 minutes of gameplay that this game provides...........

Open World - Hardly..... you'd die of suffocation before you get more than 200m away from your base......
Sandbox - Nope... You build a base of set components that don't even do anything ..... and the only thing that you can mine is asteroids that you shoot down (with crappy hit-boxes ..so half the time your bullets go straight through them too...) ...definitely NOT sandbox.
Survival Game - Yeah... pretty much the only thing you can do is die. Suffocate, get hit by an asteroid, pvp? Maybe? I mean... you have a gun............. but that's about as far as that goes.....

There are about 25 different servers - 3 of them had 1 person online each. Multiplayer..? Not without other people.....

Early Access ....?? More like EARLY EARLY EARLY EARLY EARLY EARLY ......... EARLY EARLY ACCESS.....

TL;DR
Unless they lower the price to $2 - don't buy it! It's a waste of money! I wouldn't even call it a game.

Asteroids: Outpost is a game with a ton of potential. They're on their way to a wonderful setup, with Arial view base building, survival implements, first person multiplayer action, mining and vehicle implements. The graphics are outstanding, dropping into the world for the first time is captivating. I did a commentary on it.

There's a lot of us that make these play throughs. We should build a small community, link to each-others channels. Do some multiplayer games like this one. It'd help a lot with subs too. I think it'd be cool.

A nice combination of sci-fi survival, crafting, base building on a hostile asteroid. At this stage I think this game is too easy and I would like them to add some more complex mechanics. Cheers!

The game clearly has some way to go. Many bugs are present, and the game has crashed many times for me. However, the game has potential. Despite the problems I encountered, I still enjoyed it. Would I recomend it in its current state, most likely no. But give it time, wait for it to come out of pre-alpha. Still "recommending" the game due to its budding potential

** Game is still very early on in its development with only the bare basics. I cannot recommend it in its current state **

Positives

- Interesting Implementation of the Asteroids Gameplay
- Promising Grid Based Building System
- Large Maps and Large Plots to Build On

Negatives

- No Mid or End Game Yet
- No Real PvE Threat
- No Gameplay Outside of Shooting Asteroids and Mining them At the Moment

I don't know. Really wanted this game. Love the way it looks on the images and yes, it does look nice but it's fun for 15 minutes atm. You build a main hub and a canon. Then you shoot down asteroids and mine thoose to build a few more base buildings and then ... well, then you are done.

I know it's early access and they will add more to the game but at this moment I can't say this game is worth any money unless you like to help the developers add fund into this game.

Hope they add more fun into this game ...

Don't get me wrong, What they have in the game atm, looks nice and works well, but .... It's just not enough :(

It's early access and the game has a long way to go, but I love the direction it's taking and the fact that it's set in space. Right now the game is beautiful, and when the gameplay catches up to the graphics it'll be a great game. Such is the woes of early access.

12 hours into the game now and I have mixed feelings about the game. I feel that they could have fixed some issues before providing early access. But the game definitely has potential and could make worth your time when it is finally complete.

I definitely want to play around more people, so I recommend it.

Impressed with the game concept and the graphics.
I have played it for few hours and noticed that more players need to join to extract more fun out of it.
No need to say that there are some bugs that need to be fixed. But I noticed the 'Pre-Alpha Build' on the game screen so i guess bugs are expected.
I'm hopeful that the Devs will solve these issues soon enough! Thumbs up from Me!!
